Hopefully the temperature will keep climbing to above 130F/55°C. If it does, don’t stir again until it drops below 130F/55°C.

If it doesn’t make it to 130F/55°C you can try stirring again but it probably won’t go any higher than it has.

You could add some fresh animal manure and nitrogenous greens to the middle of the pile or some LAB to try and kick start it up again but sometimes if the C/N/O/H2O mix isn’t right the thermophillic stage just plays out without reaching the highs.

Now just let the temperature keep building. Don’t stir it again ...

Jadam microbial solution (JMS) started off. With some leaf mould, forest soil, imo4 compost and boiled, mashed potato in a perforated cotton bag and mushed.

I’ll see how it looks over the next couple of days. When it has a load of foam on top I’ll dilute it and water it on areas of the plot.

The general idea behind it is this adds a lot more biology than a compost extract alone. I’ll dilute this 1:10 to 1:20 and soil drench the potato beds.

Water infiltration tests carried out on the growing beds have shown a couple of beds have issues. I wouldn’t have guessed the differences.

Water infiltration results ranged from 3 mins 28 seconds (rye grass green manures) to 14 minutes 41 seconds (mulching compost) on a colder, shaded bed.

The faster infiltration rates occurred on the green manured beds over the mulched beds.#Allotment #SoilHealth #Soil

The second phase of making the lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Adding the pure stock 1:10 to whole milk. After a few days to a week three layers will form.

A cheese layer on top, a sediment layer on the bottom and a layer of LAB in the middle. The top and bottom layers are added to the compost. The middle layer will be mixed 1:1 with unrefined brown sugar to make a shelf stable LAB for use as a multi purpose garden amendment.

I’m doing an overwintering rye grass removal trial of sorts. One area had the rye grass dug 😱 in. Another area the rye grass was weeded out with a ho-mi hand tool and a third area the rye grass is being cover killed with cardboard.

Green manures of trefoil, vetch, crimson and red clover, fenugreek and alfalfa have been sown for fertility as the beds won’t be planted up until late May. #Allotment

Day 3 making nettle FPJ. There’s enough liquid to keep the nettle material submerged without a weight on top. The weighted jars have been removed and 2 jars’ contents have been combined together.

In a couple of days I’ll slowly drip sieve the liquid through the nettle material.

I will then have a jar of nettle FPJ.

The FPJ is different to a water extract. It’s a more concentrated liquid feed to be diluted 1:1000 to 1:500 with rainwater. It can also be made long term shelf stable after a vinegar extract.

In a UK climate if kept cool and out of sunlight the initial FPJ liquid is stable long enough to use over a growing season without refrigeration.

I can’t plant much on my shady plot before mid May so I haven’t started sowing much either.

If you don’t have a compaction layer that needs breaking up, I wouldn’t dig there at all. It’s counterproductive.

Just add lots of organic matter to it, whatever you can find, leave it be and keep it mulched over the growing season to protect the soil.

A rye grass green manure has done its job over winter. I lifted it with a ho-mi and left it on the surface to continue to break down before the bed is planted up next month.

On other beds I’ve cover killed the rye grass. Both methods work well.

Some bramble roots have been forked up and removed from another bed. Some still need to be removed another time.

The black water butts are connected to each other in series to the downpipe butt. They are all full so are disconnected from it now.

The metal barrels and smaller bins are all filled by hand.

The roof space is 7m2. Annual average rainfall is 680 mm (26.5”) which equates to 4760 litres (1257 US gal).

We’ve just had nearly double our usual winter rainfall but the uncertainty is how much we’ll have in spring or summer. Most of the 3000+ litres has been collected since November.

I did some speed painting at lunch break today. Green is the new black.

I have over 3000 litres of rainwater collected in all the butts and over 3500 litre storage capacity in total. Enough to see the plot through a summer drought if need be. I won’t have to rely on any tapped water supply this year to water the plants.

Some people enquired as to why I sieve the compost. It’s to remove the larger pieces so the compost can be made into soil blocks to grow seedlings in and cut down on plastic use.

The soil blocks are ready for sowing into. I added a little leaf mould, vermiculite, horse manure and perlite to the home made compost for the soil block mix.
