Out for a run round Belgrade. Lovely weather. Seemed rude not to. Soundcheck was 11am and not on stage till midnight, so plenty of time to spend.
I dropped my hotel keycard taking my phone out of my pocket to take a photo of this delightful sentry box. Looped back 25mins later and it was still there, phew.
#running #castledon #Belgrade #turret #minecraftIdeas

With decent lighting and a power supply my very-old GoPro Hero 3 does really well. Impressed with the picture quality and stability of it - it'll happily record for 3hrs+.
They're only £20-£30 each on ebay, tempted to buy a couple of extras for documentation and stuff.

Big run this morning. Calling this route the North London Three Peaks as it goes up Crouch Hill, Alexandra Palace hill, and Muswell Hill.
Training for the Bath Half-marathon next month, which I believe to be quite hilly. Got a pretty decent time considering I wasn't planning to push it (and stopped at the garden centre to use the loos).
#running

A trip to the Dungeness sound mirrors at the weekend. This is the only place in the UK that all three designs can be seen in the same place. On an island in a nature reserve, they're only accessible up close a handful of times a year.

These were pre-radar aircraft detection devices. Initially human listeners with stethoscopes would listen to pinpoint the direction of incoming zepelins and aeroplanes (the two dish-shaped reflectors). Later an array of microphones using heated wires across the large rectangular reflector were used, with trigonometric calculations giving location results. The rectangular reflector is a segment of a 200 foot sphere, giving a much longer focal range.

The common misconception is that the invention of radar put the mirrors out of commission. In fact, we were told by the military history enthusiast at the site, they were made obsolete due to the increasing speed of air travel. Initially planes could be detected giving 30 minutes notice. As speeds reached 400mph+ it only took a few minutes to cross the channel anyway, so the detection time was as good as useless.

#acoustics #concrete #brutalism

Back in 2020, me (turntables) and Benedict Taylor (viola) and Andrew Lisle (drums) recorded an album in a day for Tresle Records.
I was really pleased with the recordings - very textural, minimal at times and intense at others. It's beautifully mixed by Nick Siddall who did a great job with all the weird and wonderful noises we made.
It's available now as a 'pay what you want' release on the label bandcamp page - grab a copy here.
https://trestlerec.bandcamp.com/album/one-day-band-23

#music #experimentalMusic #improvisation #turntable #noise #collaboration #freeImprovisation

Programmable disc with the comb-switch-array module. Pretty difficult to place the balls, easy to remove with the magnet.
Working on better switch arrays which will hopefully misfire less often (though keeping this one for recording as I like its quirks).
Various ideas for other discs and hopefully will have a prototype polyphonic version (using midi) for next fortnight's gig with Sam Underwood, to control some of his organ pipes with this mess!
#turntable #sequencer #acid #arduino #eurorack

Reecently came across these cycle panier bags by a brand called UPSO - they're made from recycled truck tarpaulin and reinforced with recycled fire hose! Each design is completely unique cos of the materials. Seem to be really solid, decent Carradice fixing points. I love them!

Good timing as my old Ortlieb paniers are totally falling to bits. Plus it's my birthday next week so I've bought myself one. If I like it as much as I expect I will likely grab another in future too.

https://upsobags.co.uk/collections/potters-pannier
