The UK Government says it wants to make "trustworthy news" easier to find online.

Sounds harmless, doesn't it?

But the real question is not whether good journalism matters. Of course it does. The real question is who gets to decide what "trustworthy" means, and what happens to independent voices when platforms are pushed to promote approved sources first.

My new blog post looks at the UK media Green Paper, why it is not yet law, and how this kind of policy could quietly reshape what we see, share, and question online.

Read it here:
https://beitmenotyou.online/trustworthy-news-uk-policy/

Who should decide what news you see first: you, the platform, or the state?

#TrustworthyNews #UKPolicy #FreeSpeech #PressFreedom #IndependentMedia #DigitalRights #MediaLiteracy #SelfSovereignty

Faith should be free. Legal rights should be equal.

This is where the debate around Sharia councils in Britain becomes serious.

The issue is not whether people can follow their faith. They absolutely should be free to do that. The issue is whether any religious body, of any tradition, can become a parallel route for decisions around marriage, divorce, custody, inheritance, or money, especially when women may not have the same practical power to challenge the outcome.

Sharia councils do not override UK law. That matters. But the danger is more subtle. If a religious marriage is never civilly registered, women can end up without the protections they thought they had. No proper civil divorce. No normal financial remedies. No clear route through the courts. That is not freedom. That is a legal trap dressed up as tradition.

Britain does not need to ban faith. It needs to make civil protection non-negotiable.

Every religious marriage should be registered with the civil authorities. Every woman should know her rights before marriage, not after things go wrong. And no community should be allowed to pressure people into settling life-changing family matters outside proper legal safeguards.

Should every religious marriage also require civil registration?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZslIqEmC2o

#WomensRights #RuleOfLaw #FreedomOfReligion #UKPolitics #CivilRights #OneLawForAll #DigitalAutonomy

Microsoft finally adding proper controls to Windows Search is a small win, but it says a lot about where tech has gone.

Your computer should search your files first. Not Bing. Not the Store. Not whatever cloud layer a company wants to monetise this week.

The wider tech news tells the same story from every angle: AI-powered upscaling, cheaper smart glasses, employee tracking, CAPTCHA replacements, and platforms deciding who gets seen or blocked.

Some of it is useful. Some of it is deeply creepy. The real question is always the same: does this give you more control, or does it pull you deeper into someone else's system?

Would you rather use tools that respect your choices from the start?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9tfNrm6pCc

#TechNews #Windows11 #Privacy #DigitalSovereignty #SelfSovereignty #AI #OpenWeb #UserControl #BeItMeNotYou

The most reliable homelab is often the one you can still understand on a tired Tuesday night.

It is tempting to self-host everything at once. A calmer approach:

1. Pick services with a clear job.
2. Write down how they start, back up, and fail.
3. Keep admin tools private/VPN/Tailscale-only.
4. Make public routes simple: website, community links, mirrors, contact points.
5. Retire anything you no longer maintain.

A mini PC does not have to become a second full-time job. It can be a small, useful piece of open-web infrastructure.

If that is the self-hosting you are interested in, BIMNY / The Autonomy Lab has places to compare notes:

Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
GoToSocial: https://community.beitmenotyou.online
Links hub: https://links.beitmenotyou.online/
Nostr relay: wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #OpenWeb #Decentralisation #FreedomTech #Nostr #Fediverse

An alert should tell you what to check next, not just shout that something is wrong.

For a small homelab or community server, monitoring is most useful when it is quiet, specific, and actionable.

A good alert might answer:

- Is the public site down, or just the admin panel?
- Is the container running but unhealthy?
- Is disk space getting tight?
- Did the tunnel stop responding?
- Did the last backup actually complete?
- Is this urgent, or just something to look at later?

The trick is to avoid turning your phone into a panic machine.

You do not need a huge enterprise setup to do this. A few clear checks, sensible notification rules, and a small “what to check first” note can make self-hosting feel much calmer.

Also: public links are fine. Admin dashboards should stay private, VPN, or Tailscale-only.

If you are into self-hosting, privacy-aware tech, Matrix, Nostr, the Fediverse, open source, or building a more independent web, you are welcome to follow the public doors here:

Links hub: https://links.beitmenotyou.online/
Matrix community: https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
NostrLab relay: wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #Nostr #OpenWeb #Privacy #Decentralisation #FreedomTech

A green container is not always a healthy service.

Docker can say “Up” while WordPress returns a 500 error, a tunnel points at the wrong target, backups have stopped, or a database is running but the app cannot actually connect.

A calmer self-hosting habit: give important services one small promise to keep.

- Website: does the public page return normally?
- Database: can the app connect, not just the process run?
- Backups: did the latest job finish, and can you list it?
- Tunnel/onion mirror: can the public route reach the public thing?
- Admin dashboards: are they still private over VPN/Tailscale, not exposed publicly?

You do not need a huge observability stack to start.

One or two real checks per service turns “I hope it is fine” into “I can see what is drifting.”

If you are building a small homelab, self-hosted site, Fediverse/Matrix/Nostr corner, come and compare practical notes:

Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
Links: https://links.beitmenotyou.online/
GoToSocial: https://community.beitmenotyou.online
Nostr relay: wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #Docker #OpenSource #Privacy #FreedomTech

Before you fix the homelab, write down what you are about to change.

Not a full incident report. Just a tiny change log:

- what looked wrong
- what service/container was affected
- what file, command, or setting you touched
- whether a backup exists
- what the rollback plan is
- what happened afterwards

It sounds boring, but this is how self-hosting gets less stressful.

When Docker, WordPress, tunnels, onion mirrors, backups, or monitoring start interacting in odd ways, future-you will be very glad past-you left a trail.

Also: keep admin tools private, ideally VPN/Tailscale-only. Public front doors are fine. Private workshop doors should stay private.

Open-web/community links:
https://links.beitmenotyou.online/
https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #OpenSource #Privacy #Decentralisation #FreedomTech #Nostr

Future you will thank present you for drawing the map before something breaks.

One of the most useful self-hosting habits is a simple service map.

Not a huge diagram. Not enterprise architecture. Just enough to see the path:

domain / public link
→ tunnel, onion route, or VPN
→ container
→ app
→ database or storage
→ backup
→ monitor

Then add one important boundary:

public community doors on one side, private admin tools on the other.

That way, when something fails, “everything is down” becomes a calmer set of questions:

Is DNS or the tunnel working?
Is the container healthy?
Can the app reach its database?
Did the backup run?
Is the admin surface still private?

This is the kind of practical freedom tech I like: small systems people can understand, maintain, and improve.

Community links and projects:
https://links.beitmenotyou.online/
Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
GoToSocial: https://community.beitmenotyou.online
Nostr relay: wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #OpenSource #Privacy #OpenWeb #FreedomTech #Nostr

Self-hosting gets calmer when maintenance becomes a routine, not an emergency.

A simple 10-minute health check can prevent a lot of drama:

1. Check disk space before logs or backups fill the drive.
2. Check memory/swap before services start crawling.
3. Look at container health, not just whether the homepage loads.
4. Confirm backups completed and are actually restorable.
5. Keep admin tools private — VPN/Tailscale/local access only.
6. Write down one small improvement for next time.

That habit is what keeps a mini PC, WordPress site, tunnel, relay, or community service boring in the best possible way.

If you are building calmer self-hosted infrastructure or learning as you go, come and compare notes:

Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
Links: https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #OpenSource #Privacy #DigitalSovereignty #FreedomTech

A good homelab has a front door and a workshop door.

The front door is what you want people to find:

- community links
- public posts
- open-web profiles
- Matrix or Fediverse spaces
- useful resources
- ways to support the project

The workshop door is different.

That is where admin tools, dashboards, databases, backups, logs and service controls live. Those should stay private, ideally behind VPN/Tailscale or another properly locked-down route.

This is one of the calmest self-hosting rules I know:

Build in public where it helps people.
Administer in private where it protects the system.

For Be It Me Not You / The Autonomy Lab, the public side starts here:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

Matrix community:
https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org

GoToSocial:
https://community.beitmenotyou.online

NostrLab relay:
wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

Small, boring boundaries make independent infrastructure much easier to live with.

#SelfHosting #Homelab #OpenWeb #Privacy #Decentralisation #Nostr #Matrix #Fediverse

A relay is a small piece of internet infrastructure you can actually understand.

That is one reason Nostr is interesting for people who care about the open web, self-sovereignty, and freedom tech.

You do not have to treat it as a replacement for Matrix, the Fediverse, a website, or a community hub. It can sit alongside them.

Matrix can be good for deeper group conversation.
GoToSocial/Fediverse can be good for public posts and community presence.
A links hub can be the simple front door.
A Nostr relay can be part of the plumbing that helps people publish and connect without relying on one central platform.

If you are exploring Nostr, self-hosting, decentralised communities, or practical digital independence, the NostrLab relay is here:

wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

More Be It Me Not You / The Autonomy Lab links:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

#Nostr #SelfHosting #OpenWeb #FreedomTech #Decentralisation #DigitalSovereignty

The open web works best when people have more than one doorway in.

You do not have to abandon every big platform overnight. A calmer approach is to build parallel spaces people can actually use, bookmark, and leave without losing everyone.

A few practical doorways:

- Matrix community chat: https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org
- GoToSocial / Fediverse community: https://community.beitmenotyou.online
- NostrLab relay for people testing relay-based social: wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/
- Main links hub: https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

The goal is not purity.

It is resilience:
fewer single points of failure, fewer algorithmic chokepoints, and more direct ways to talk, learn, build, and stay in touch.

#OpenWeb #Nostr #Matrix #Fediverse #SelfHosting #FreedomTech #DigitalSovereignty

      A practical self-hosting principle:

Not everything needs to be exposed to the internet.

Public services and admin services have very different jobs.

A website, community platform, photo gallery, or search service may need public access.

Your management tools usually don't.

Consider keeping things like:

• Monitoring dashboards • Container management tools • Server administration panels • Internal metrics • Infrastructure controls

behind Tailscale, a VPN, or another private access layer.

The goal isn't to hide everything.

The goal is reducing unnecessary exposure.

Every service that isn't publicly reachable is one less thing to worry about securing against the entire internet.

A simple architecture often looks like this:

Public services → public access

Admin services → private access only

Small changes like this can significantly improve the security and sustainability of a homelab.

Useful resources:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

Community discussion:

https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org

https://community.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Linux #Homelab #Tailscale #Privacy #OpenSource #Security #DigitalSovereignty #SelfHostingTips

One of the best self-hosting lessons I've learned is this:

Start with the server you have, not the server you wish you had.

It's easy to spend weeks comparing hardware, storage options, networking gear, and deployment strategies.

Meanwhile, an old laptop or a small mini PC could already be running:

• A personal website
• A password manager
• A Matrix bridge
• A photo gallery
• A backup server
• A private search engine
• A monitoring stack

The biggest limitation for most homelabs isn't hardware.

It's never getting started.

Small systems also teach useful habits:

• Resource management
• Backup planning
• Service prioritisation
• Monitoring
• Documentation

You can always upgrade later.

A working service on modest hardware is far more valuable than a perfect design that never leaves the planning stage.

Useful links:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

Community spaces:

https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org

https://community.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #Linux #MiniPC #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty #Privacy #SelfHostingTips #Docker

VPNs are being pushed into a very strange corner in the UK.

The Online Safety Act does not make VPNs illegal, but it has helped create a climate where creators feel nervous simply explaining privacy tools.

That should worry everyone.

A VPN is not some shady workaround machine. It is basic digital self-defence.

It can help stop your internet provider from seeing every site you visit, reduce tracking, protect multiple devices through a router setup, give you a kill switch if the connection drops, and help you separate what traffic goes where.

Yes, people can use VPNs to change their location. But pretending that is the only reason they exist is lazy and dangerous.

Protecting children matters. Of course it does.

But we need to be very careful when "online safety" becomes a path towards ID checks, biometric verification, platform censorship, and suspicion around privacy itself.

Privacy tools are not the enemy. Normalising surveillance is.

Source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuoPHuey-48

What do you think, are VPNs being unfairly demonised in the UK debate?

#VPN #Privacy #OnlineSafetyAct #DigitalRights #UK #Surveillance #SelfSovereignty #FreedomTech

One of the biggest mindset shifts in self-hosting is realising that monitoring is not just for outages.

It's for trends.

A server running at 95% disk usage today might still be working perfectly. The problem is what happens next week.

The same goes for:

• Memory usage is slowly creeping up
• Containers restarting more frequently
• Backup jobs are taking longer
• Databases growing unexpectedly
• Network traffic changing over time

A dashboard is useful, but the goal is not staring at graphs all day.

The goal is to notice patterns before they become emergencies.

Even a simple setup that tracks disk space, CPU, memory, uptime, and container health can teach you a lot about how your services behave.

The best maintenance window is the one you schedule before a problem forces it on you.

Useful resources:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

Join the conversation:

https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org

https://community.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #Linux #Docker #Monitoring #OpenSource #Privacy #DigitalSovereignty #SelfSovereignty

One lesson I keep coming back to in self-hosting:

If a service matters, monitor it.

It does not matter whether you're running a WordPress site, a Matrix server, a search engine, a photo platform, or a simple personal dashboard. The earlier you add monitoring, the easier life becomes.

You do not need an enterprise setup. Start with a few basic checks:

• Is the service online? • Is SSL working? • Is disk space running low? • Is the server overloaded? • Are backups completing successfully?

The goal is not to collect endless graphs. The goal is awareness.

Monitoring turns surprises into notifications.

One practical habit is to build your service first, then immediately add a health check before moving on to the next project. Over time, that creates a much more resilient homelab.

Private admin dashboards should stay private and be protected through VPN or Tailscale access where possible.

Useful links:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org

#SelfHosting #Homelab #Linux #Monitoring #Docker #OpenSource #Privacy #DigitalSovereignty #Tailscale

One of the most underrated self-hosting skills is documentation.

Not because it looks impressive, but because future-you will forget things.

Six months after setting up a service, will you remember:

• Why a container uses a specific volume?
• Which domain points to which service?
• Where are backups stored?
• Which environment variables are critical?
• What steps are required to rebuild everything?

Probably not.

A simple markdown file can save hours of troubleshooting later. Every time I deploy something new, I try to document:

1. What it does.
2. Why it exists.
3. Where the data lives.
4. How to back it up.
5. How to restore it.

The goal is simple: if a drive dies tomorrow, rebuilding should be a process, not an archaeological dig.

Your homelab is more sustainable when knowledge is stored alongside the infrastructure.

Useful links:
https://links.beitmenotyou.online/
https://docs.beitmenotyou.online/#/

#SelfHosting #Homelab #Linux #Docker #Documentation #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty #SelfSovereignty
A self-hosting lesson that sounds boring until the day it saves you:

A backup is not real until you have tested the restore.

It is easy to set up a nightly backup, watch a green tick appear, and feel like the job is done. But the real question is simple:

Could you rebuild from it?

For a small homelab, that might mean testing one WordPress export, restoring a Docker volume to a spare folder, checking a database dump, or confirming that your files open properly after download.

You do not need an enterprise disaster recovery plan to start. You need a small habit:

1. Back up the data.
2. Copy it somewhere else.
3. Verify it.
4. Test a restore before you need one.

That is the difference between "I think I have backups" and "I know I can recover."

Self-hosting is not just about running your own tools. It is about keeping the ability to recover when something breaks.

The community links are here:
https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #Backups #Homelab #Linux #Docker #DigitalSovereignty #Privacy #OpenSource

A small but meaningful self-sovereignty milestone today.

I now have a Bitcoin node running on my own Mini PC, with BTCPay Server set up for donations.

It runs on a pruned Bitcoin Core setup, Fast Sync, and Cloudflare Tunnel, so I can accept Bitcoin donations without relying on a third-party payment processor or opening direct public ports on the server.

This is the kind of thing I want The Autonomy Lab / Be It Me Not You to be about: practical steps towards owning more of our digital lives, one service at a time.

Lightning is not enabled yet, as I am keeping the node lean and stable first. On-chain Bitcoin donations are the first step. Once the base setup has been running smoothly, I will look at the next layer.

Would you run your own payment stack if the setup felt approachable?

https://btcpay.beitmenotyou.online/apps/eHsm1fuw59zF35tFz5ujEN7foV6/pos

#Bitcoin #BTCPayServer #SelfHosting #SelfSovereignty #Privacy #FreedomTech #OpenSource #Decentralisation #TheAutonomyLab

      A small self-hosting reminder:

Your public pages and your admin tools should not live in the same mental bucket.

The public side should be simple: a links hub, community links, useful docs, places people can find you and join in.

The private side should stay private: dashboards, logs, server panels, monitoring, deployment tools, backups, and anything that controls the machine.

That means a public front door and a private control Room.

For Be It Me Not You / The Autonomy Lab, the links hub is the public starting point:

https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

From there, people can find the community spaces without needing access to the machinery behind the scenes.

That is the balance I keep coming back to with self-hosting. Make it welcoming for humans. Keep the operational bits locked down, boring, and private.

#SelfHosting #Privacy #OpenWeb #DigitalSovereignty #Homelab #Fediverse #Nostr

The first self-hosting win is not “I put everything on the public internet”.

It is usually much more boring and much more important:

- backups you have actually checked
- admin tools kept private, ideally over VPN/Tailscale
- container logs you can read without panic
- monitoring that tells you what changed
- a clear split between public services and private control panels
- a recovery plan before you need one

A mini PC can run a surprising amount: WordPress, tunnels, an onion mirror, monitoring, dashboards, notifications, search, backups, and community tools.

But sustainable self-hosting is not about collecting services. It is about knowing what each service does, what depends on it, and how you would bring it back if it failed.

That is the kind of practical autonomy we are building around Be It Me Not You / The Autonomy Lab.

Matrix community:
https://matrix.to/#/#bimny:matrix.org

Links hub:
https://links.beitmenotyou.online/

NostrLab relay:
wss://nostrlab.beitmenotyou.online/

#SelfHosting #HomeLab #OpenSource #Privacy #FreedomTech #Decentralisation #Nostr
