I see no sign of any recognition from those who would want such a ban that they see any of the collateral damage a successful ban would have on the majority of kids who are not falling for this bullshit. That they are banning any good at all along with the bad.

I see that the lobbying for these laws are funded by the absolute worst companies on the internet, those who will be entrenched by the legal compliance costs, that will cement themselves as the arbitrators of who is allowed to access the internet.

It’s a gift to Palantir and other surveillance companies. The very people running these algo-feeds are the ones who benefit from IDing every user and stalking them across the internet on their government-approved internet-licence IDs.

I don’t think even a successful ban on social media for kids would actually address the issue of kids being exposed to sexism and misogony or reduce the kids alienation and depression.

A ban can’t help, will make many things worse, won’t address the problem, and will make competing with the worst surveillance capitalists on the planet more difficult.

Going to war with every internet site and advice forum and making internet access harder won’t fix anything, and will have massive collateral damage against everyone seeking support from strangers or trying to learn things their parents won’t teach them.

But I see we are going to do it anyway.

The direction is clear.

Those companies do get what they lobby for, and they are lobbying hard for ID checks on every website, wrapping their desire to enclose the internet commons for themselves in a faux concern for children’s welfare.

And governments wish to monitor and control the internet, so they will pass these laws.

I wonder how many parents have a family group-chat that they’re going to accidentally ban their kids from using, not realizing that ‘social media’ might include Whatsapp? 😆

It won’t fix anything, it will make the situation for kids worse, impose costs and rents and hacks and exploits on all of us, and increase government and corporate power.

Many will lose access to their networks of support and help.

So it goes.

None of these surveillance companies trying to break your kid’s brains would exist if we hadn’t made it illegal to reverse engineer their manipulative crappy software and produce compatible none-manipulative clones.

But they have been granted legal monopoly, so they can do what they like.

If you want a law to protect internet users it isn’t

There is support for these laws because people think the only consequence of a ban on a thing is that the thing stops existing.

For instance: Heroin is dangerous and addictive? Ban it then.

And suddenly you have organized crime and a grey market and criminal gangs shooting each other in the streets while addicts can’t seek help and have to resort to crime to fund their addiction. Their lives more chaotic and criminal than ever. Our streets are littered in needles.

I tell them what I want to watch, I don’t let them tell ME what to watch, and frankly I wish all those videographers would start a peertube instance or something instead of posting their work on a corporate surveillance site.

I say you should avoid that algorithm stuff, it’s crazy manipulative.

The reasons for this lobbying are nefarious.

The bans will entrench existing companies ensuring no small company is able to compete. These massive entrenched companies will be able to afford the identity checking and compliance costs, tiny start ups not so much.

You can see why Facebook lobby so hard in favour of these laws. If their app WhatsApp is defined as the only group messenger allowed for kids by law, that is very nice for them.

Perhaps compliance is actually cheap and easy and small companies can afford it?

Certainly not if they are trying to compete in terms of privacy. They have to turn over their user ID data to a monopolist vetting company by law.

At best: we give the government the power to impose massive costs on any company they decided to add to a list of companies that count as social media. Impose costs and force them to hand over their user data to Palantir and the like.

None of the options on the shortlist were good. Most of them just as grammatically inconvenient as the dumb placeholder name.

The people who decide on the short-list, who can be a member, whose votes counts and what the options are, have quite a lot of power.

Zara Sultana boycotted day one over who sets the rules and who can be involved. If Your Party have a governing body with power to override conference they end up like the Labour party and just are easily taken over and usurped by a cabal of thatcherite neoliberal capitalists.

I think rather than bitcoin being to blame, it's the leading indicator that people don't have any money.

Dunno that "mandate" is quite the right word for setting up the system so that every pull request to the codebase gets reviewed by the AI bot, but since it's use is unavoidable that's what I voted.

It's caught some bugs before they're published, and hallucinated many problems which aren't really there.

But all the code we write is being reviewed by robots now, and so the code is written slightly differently to avoid it going on about issues that aren't really there.

People imagine that code is written for the computer to run, but really it's always been written for the programmers to understand. Now it's also written for the ai that has no context or understanding to review.

The cops and the government suggest that tomorrow's protest against the proscription of Palestine Action should be postponed because a crazy person done some murders.

The home secretary says

That is not the point of the protest. The point of the protest is to show that the proscription of a non violent protest organization under terrorism laws is ridiculous and unenforceable as well as being a massive waste of police and court time.

Delaying the protest would harm that demonstration. The police are over stretched and can't enforce this stupid counter-productive proscription without compromising their duty elsewhere.

Demonstrating that is the point of the protest, and police saying "We are too stretched to arrest all these demonstrators" just reinforces that point all the more.

You know what police and government? You could just not persecute non violent protestors as terrorists. That'd solve your over-stretched police resources problem in one stroke!

Voting in the UK Green party elections is half over. Too late to join the party and vote, and sounds like Zack is very likely to win.

Which is good. I voted for him.

I think the job-share rule is important and that any job should be possible to share between workers. But in the case of the "leader", which is literally the face of the party, having two faces is difficult in the public hive mind. Even with a united front, it's litterally two faced.

But mostly my vote was just for Zack, and would have likely voted for him in a job-share too.

He's very personable and seems to know how to talk to the public and express not just environmental issues but other green issues like inequality and war and how your enemy is not a boat of refugees but the concentration of power in the hands of maniacs both political and corporate.

I confess I gave up trying to read anything about the candidates and cast a vote about half way down all the other jobs being elected. I'm just adding noise. I dunno who any of these people are or even what the job entails most of the time and there's too many all at once. Should stagger them weekly or something.

I don't usually bother to write to you on most issues because I figure there is pretty much no point communicating with a whipped MP in a safe seat under first past the post. Such an MP has no reason to listen to their constituents at all, and is entirely a tool of the party leadership.

I make an exception today since I hear your government is about to classify Palestine Action as a terrorist group. Despite them being peaceful, non-violent, and dedicated entirely to preventing the greater crime of the ongoing genocide of Gazan Palestinians.

This is obviously a gross overreaction and a completely unjustifiable act designed not to prevent domestic terrorism but to cover up British forces and UK government involvement and collaboration with the genocide in Gaza.

If we are taking suggestions for groups to ban as terrorists even though they aren't terrorists, I would like to suggest the Labour Party! The party has helped facilitate a genocide abroad, and continues to supply the perpetrators with arms and intelligence to aid their actions.

I don't expect you to take that suggestion seriously, but maybe Reform will take it seriously when they get elected in a few years and I suggest it again to them. After all, a precedent will have been set that groups which aren't terrorists can be banned under anti-terror legislation anyway. Democracy will have already been eroded.

I was ready to be disappointed by this Labour government, but I confess that the level of gut-wrenching visceral disgust I am experiencing at them surpassed all my wildest expectations. Taking money from the disabled to buy new war-planes from a fascist US president while abetting a genocide in Gaza makes me wonder if Reform wouldn't be better in the end anyway. At least they might do electoral reform and nationalize the water companies.

Labour's only hope, the country's only hope, is to remove Starmer. I wish you had won that leadership election instead of him.

Anyway, as I say, I don't expect it to make any difference at all because under this election system even MPs in safe seats are nothing but tools of the party leadership and the party leadership seems determined. But I thought I'd let you know that I see you. I see what you are doing.

I believe I have managed to prove my ID in order to comply with the new laws that say I have to prove my ID to own the business I own that I'm sure already asked me to prove my ID when I registered it.

First we tried the on-web version, but that apparently relies upon the corporates having managed to profile and track me, because it told me they had no questions upon which to base identification. Good I guess? My avoid-tracking systems must be working at least a bit?

Next we tried the android app, but apparently the phone I tried that with is too old and the app won't install.

So next option is turning up at a post office with a printed letter. I don't own a printer though, so had to have them post that to me.

Took the letter and a driving licence up to the post office today and "It's not going through" they said, pointing to a stalled progress bar on an android app on a tablet.

Um. Okay. So?

Just wait longer apparently. About ten minutes and it finally proceeded and the post office man took a photograph of me after asking me to disrobe of my robe, strip down to a teeshirt and jeans.

Not sure in what sense this has proven my ID any more than it was already proven to get the driving licence or company registration in the first place?

Apparently I now have government logins for "One Login" and for "government gateway" and they are not the same thing? But sort of are the same thing?

Can't say I really understand it. Expect they'll introduce a third government login when they do these Digital ID cards they're talking about.

God knows how I'm supposed to know which to use when the company tax records need updating in a few months.

What are trade deficits? Rich countries can buy more than poor countries, so the US buys more from China, so there's a trade imbalance. So money/wealth flows from the rich country to the poor one.

So America is in growing debt to China. Tariffs can be erected to slow that flow. You can tax imports instead of income. Great.

Trouble is that tariffs are a regressive tax, and so replacing income taxes with tariffs makes taxes more regressive, moving the tax burden to the poor. Gary takes us through that Progressive and Regressive taxes are.

Initially tariffs were supposed to be targeted at those with highest trade barriers, but Trumps crazy formula targeted the poorest countries with the biggest trade deficit instead. A theoretical attempt to move the worst jobs in the world into America. Would have killed some of the poorest people in the poorest countries. Make clothes expensive in the US to try and make the US have sweat shops again!? Gary finds it so insane he can't barely stop himself laughing. "Low competence implementation" is his euphemism.

"God knows how many cambodians would have died just to make it so American's can't afford trainers". Could have make Nike bankrupt.

"What would you do if you were the chancellor" is a question he gets asked a lot. His answer is that he'd not just make up economic policy and rewrite the economic system on his own on his youtube channel. He'd actually game things out with experts and international cooperation. Markets crashed. Nobody thinks this can go on. Rich people buying discounted stocks. Gary was buying, mostly on reflex, expecting change in policy.

Seems like they want to fix the balance of trade with the rest of the world, which may be a laudable aim, but there's a reason it's so skewed: The dollar.

You can't print all the global reserve currency that the world needs and supply the world with money while also having a balanced trade sheet. The world is taking your money, your promises to pay, and giving you consumer products in return.

If you want to give them consumer products in return instead, then they no longer take your money, and the world has to find something new to trade among themselves other than dollars because they no longer have dollars.

Perhaps it really is time to destroy the petrodollar as the world reserve currency. Would likely be good for American workers to do that.

But this seems a somewhat chaotic method to pick.

Everyone else is exactly the same as why I stopped watching. The panel filled with pompous bootlickers and wankers who defend the status quo and the rich, even as they attack each other.

The audience full of barely coherent idiots whose questions miss the point where they make any sense at all.

The panel other than him is unanimous that Wealth Taxes can't work because they've been tried in some places, and those places then stop trying after a while.

Shortly the chancellor of the exchequer will do a budget in which she's expected to cut a wide range of benefits and allowances and generally try and balance the books by taking from the poor to give to the rich.

They won't call it Austerity, because that name is poisoned and they promised not to do anything called that, but that's what it is.

Making the poor masses poorer reduces spending in the economy, which reduces government receipts, and makes the deficit bigger not smaller.

Austerity never works. Can't work.

If balancing the books matters it really needs to be done by taxing the rich to spend on the poor, so that the poor spend the money into the economy and grow the economy to increase the government receipts.

The rich end up with the money anyway, once the poor spend it. They always do.

Cutting from the poor to avoid taxing the rich just means more money goes into overseas tax havens and into pumping up the untaxed prices of assets for the rich. No growth, except in asset prices and the hordes of the owner class.

You'd hope a left wing government would get this, but of course Starmer's Labour aren't a left wing government, they are just more tory.

The word "Algorithm" seems to be evolving a second meaning. In the context of defining the difference between social media sorting systems, "the algorithm" is an opaque system built by advertising companies with nefarious intent designed to manipulate a person in to engagement, and to political and purchase decisions.

As usual with language, you'd pick a better word if you could design the language instead of having to let it evolve in a messy contradictory way.

Even without that second meaning though, the phrase "No algorithm imposing posts on us" is true for Mastodon at least. The things in your feed are chosen, not imposed. Even those boosted are boosted by your followers not by advertisers or political manipulators or the owners of the site. The key word is "imposing".
