Oh, y'all don't forget, it's Bandcamp Friday. All proceeds from sales today go to the artist, Bandcamp doesn't take a cut. I'mma buy some weird thrash that sounds like it was recorded in a dumpster. https://reactorblast.bandcamp.com/album/rise-of-the-reactor

I don't find that interesting to watch, so I don't know how successful it's been, but I assume it's fine.

I've asked Claude for help with 6502 assembly for C64, and it's seemingly quite competent. The training probably doesn't focus on it, but the models are so big and the retro machines so small and simple, they can just do it.

I confidently assert I'm 3X more productive with Claude Code and Opus 4.7, and if I'm being honest with myself, the code is probably better than I would have written myself...I just have a lot more time to exhaustively test and verify ins and outs that I never could before.

And, it's not that expensive. $100 a month is my total spend on Claude, which my employer pays. I could burn a lot more tokens, probably enough to cost a lot more, but I wouldn't get useful software out of it if I did because I wouldn't be paying close enough attention to what it's doing.

Github Copilot used to be a cheap way to do it ($10), but they've changed to token billing.

And, I mean, 3x is a productivity explosion rarely seen in software development (going from punch cards to teletype to interactive terminals, those were 3x jumps, at least, compilers, too, but it's been a long time since we had one), but it's not what a lot of executive believe is happening. They're thinking 10x is conservative. I've even seen "1000x" suggested.

Guys like this (I hate linking to LinkedIn, but most of the articles about it are AI slop), genuinely believe people are vibe-coding software that works. There are enough former engineers like Yegge who also believe they're making software that works via vibe-coding, despite all the evidence to the contrary (Beads and Gas Town being the evidence that vibe coding doesn't produce useful software), that expectations are getting weird.
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/naval-ravikant-apple-dead-saas-next-you-have-18-months-mustufa-khan-ibjaf/

They've made a fortune on selling a box that people can run big models on locally for close to the best price/performance across the board.

And, every Strix Halo box that comes along sells out immediately.

It's the frontier of 9-10 months ago, but it was good enough to write pretty good code really fast. It was the point where I said, "OK, this actually works, and I can't argue I'm more productive, or even similarly productive, without it."

So, when small-ish open models really reach Opus 4.5 capability, it's a big deal. Maybe the tipping point.

Models you can run on a Strix Halo or even something with 64GB of VRAM or unified memory (a beefy Mac) are competitive with frontier models of two years ago. Gemma 4 is excellent in the two bigger versions. Qwen 3.6 27B just came out today, and from a benchmark perspective is even better. I'm just starting to test it.

Either runs comfortably, if slowly, unquantized on 128GB or at 8-bits on 64GB (8-bits is barely lossy).

I get so mad about `nano` being the default editor on Debian/Ubuntu, as it's so disorienting to not get vim (and hard to use). Now, it's the default editor on Fedora, but only if the `nano-default-editor` package is installed...which I guess is automatically installed by the installer? I sure as hell didn't install it.

nano is also seemingly configured in git somehow as the default editor, which is just hurtful.

The mid-range iPad I bought has a faster CPU than the top-of-the-line Ryzen I have in my desktop on single-core performance. This is absurd. The Ryzen CPU alone cost more than the tablet. A tablet's got no business being fast.

In other news, I ordered a refurb Macbook Pro M5. I'm mad about how much it costs to get 32GB of RAM, but the performance advantage is crazy. Nobody has cheap RAM now, so the Apple tax is maybe as small as it's ever been, because everybody else is charging a big RAM tax.

Technical people are able to prod the machine into making working code of pretty high quality a lot more often than non-technical people.)

I can't really say I'm happy about it, but given a competent operator, it produces quite good, if a little verbose, code that works the first time most of the time. It writes better and more tests than I've found most human coders do, it often includes accessibility markup without being asked (another thing human coders simply don't do), and it documents its work.

VICE has settable CPU speed, but it can't go that anywhere near fast, even on my desktop, which I just recently put roughly the fastest desktop CPU available in (9950X3D). But, I guess if you're careful about how you handle timing, maybe you can make things work on both. I know most games choke or are unplayable on an accelerated C64 because they don't run at a human friendly speed.

It's been in my cart for weeks. But, I really like the idea of making games and tools that take advantage of a big REU (which I guess VICE and TheC64 can also have, so it's not unique to C64U, and folks who make software that uses it can expect a sort of broad set of possible users). It's almost entirely unmapped territory. This demo was another contributor to the decision. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK8U_sS5ld4

But, there have been 28 years of Republican mayors, and the Republican candidate got the off-year election he wanted and sued to get, and still lost. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/09/miami-elects-first-woman-mayor-ends-gops-28-year-control-of-city-hall-00683878

Since I'm using sprites for the little guys, it seems like it would be, as they have pixel-precise movement. How to maintain the world map (not the visual one, the one that determines behaviors) is breaking my brain, though. Much to think about.

But, I can't figure it out? It's complicated and clearly not designed for retro machine targets, though I've seen people talk about using it for making C64 sprites, I just can't see how. I was a little worried about Qt Quick, because they apparently added JavaScript and something like HTML to Qt to make QML work, and I was concerned that would lead to bloat, and I'm sure it did, but not much.

I have been right but too early many times.

e.g. I divested from crypto in 2018, for many reasons, but for the point of this toot, bc it was obvious it was all a scam, siphoning money from retail investors to the folks controlling the exchanges (and thus the trading prices, since wash trading was and is rampant). But, that was way too early. The bottom still hasn't fallen out, and the scam is still not obvious to everyone.

Is it too early to sell all index funds that predominantly hold tech?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Every recent text editor sets up tab as the auto-complete key, by default, and that is simply deranged behavior. And, pretty much all the Neovim plugin starter bundles also do it that way.

How the fuck are you supposed to tab? Guessed completions are wrong 90% of the time, why would I ever want it to be the thing that always happens when I hit "tab"? PC GEOS or GeoWorks could run on 8088, right? I wonder if it runs on PCjr... I was always curious about it, but didn't own a PC when it was relevant. My first PC was Windows 95 era, and soon got Red Hat Linux.

That's also part of why it failed, I think? They wrote much of it in assembler and going to 32-bit architecture while competing with a much better funded Microsoft and Apple was a challenge maybe?

Hey, fellow retro nerds, I have an Apple II+, disk drive II, and Monitor III I bought a few years ago and never got around to doing anything with. When I bought this house, it had three refrigerators (one in the back house). All varying degrees of old, all cheap, but all working. I unplugged all but one, since it's just me and the dogs/cat. The one I was using died today. So, I plugged in the other one in the front house...also now seemingly dead. No sound and not getting cooler. So, now I've got to hope the one in the back house isn't also dead and figure out how to move it to the front. And, quickly, since all my food is thawing.

Whichever one your app of choice has the best docs for is the right one. They're both plenty fast and efficient given modern hardware, they're both plenty secure in a default configuration, well-maintained, plenty of features, etc. You've already spent more time on web server choice than you need to.

That's why I'm afraid of the C64 Ultimate in the clear case, because they describe a lot of light features that sound really annoying.

Still kinda considering it, if the RGB lightshow bullshit can be turned off in a way that leaves it off until turned back on.

They've got two special editions of the Commodore 64 Ultimate, and they're both remarkably uglier than the standard brown one, at least in the pictures. I like transparent cases, but only if they don't have crazy RGB LED fireworks flashing all the time. I wonder if that can be disabled? Keyboards should not flash, throb, sparkle, etc. it's way too distracting to have that happening just out of my visual periphery. #Commodore

I'd like it to have a slightly better case (it's not as sturdy as I'd like), and a new version with all the fixes. And, having Commodore branding and a legitimate claim to the original OS (with fixes) would be great. If volume could bring the price down that'd also be good.

I love the Commodore 64, but I feel like it's not quite enough computer to spend a lot of time with. I want 80 columns, stereo sound, and a wee bit more color and pixels. Not a lot, mind you. Just a little more. A Commodore 128 would almost scratch the itch (the 80-column graphics chip has too many limitations to really do the job). The C65 definitely does scratch the itch, but I don't know how broad that nostalgia is.

Does Cloanto own the Amiga IP or do they license it from someone?

They're not slapping the brand on bullshit (e.g. cheap PC clones with a dumb-ass Linux version that looks like it's made by/for children), which is a great start. They're embracing all the folks who are already working in the space...the people who have implemented Commodore computers and accessories and software from scratch in various ways.

I'd love to see a ~$400 Amiga 1200. Fingers crossed that comes to pass.

Nobody can do that because the world has changed.

It's dumb to hate on this stuff because it's a realistic plan meant for hobbyists, not for the masses. If they can increase production runs by tapping into a broader market with effective branding and marketing, they can drive prices down some, but that's about it.

They're cool things, and they don't need a Commodore name to be cool, but having the Commodore name may bring in new people who didn't know how to tap into the retro Commodore community.

It's fun for the fans, and that's enough.

The biggest companies in the world can't even figure out how to make cool new tech, they're just flailing putting out dumb shit. There's no revolutionary improvement left. Computers are cheap enough and good enough for anything.
