well, stellar mass binaries in the sense that they’re less than like a couple hundred times the mass of the sun. There have been a considerable number of mergers at the <10 Msun level a this point, but the limitation at the low mass end (I think) is more related to the relative sparsity of those events than our sensitivity. For total binary mass ~ 10 Msun LIGO is sensitive to everything within about 5 Gly of us.

If you’d like a little more cosmic horror, when supermassive binaries emit gravitational waves, the total emitted energy is also a small fraction of the total mass of the binary. Those SMBH are typically about 0.1% of the mass of the entire galaxy, so the energy emitted by GW are maybe a millionth the total mass-energy of the galaxy. (though the emission is over like a billion years, so it’s only loud when you’re counting up all the binaries in the universe, in which case it’s apparently deafening)

Hey any east bay trans photographers out there wanna meet up?

I'm thinking of starting a photo group / zine (shoutout to Jessica Rooster (npub1q6j…64ds)) centered around slice of life photography of the trans experience in the east bay.

The idea is inspired by the group formed by Ansel Adams and friends, f/64 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_f/64) which pushed back against pictorial photography of the 20s and instead aimed to embrace photography as a medium in its own right. Their work was frequently extremely political in its use of straight photography to reproduce a scene as they see it and understand it, rather than using it to build a pictorial image. In this sense, their photography acted as a testament to the way they saw the world, in all its problems: environmental, economic, bigoted; and aimed to lay those problems bare on their film

F64.0 is the ICD-10 code for transexualism.

In short, this project f/64.0 is a photographic depiction of trans life as we see it and as we experience it, during a period where our existences are politicized and used for purposes beyond ourselves. Just as f/64 used straight photography to ground their medium in its material realities and pull it back from pictorialism, f/64.0 does the same to root trans existence and pull it back from politicization.

yeah im a Bart maximalist, like I think virtually all of the transit in the bay should gradually be collected under the bart umbrella. Bart and Caltrain are complementary. Bart + bus connects quickly to ACE at Centerville, most of BART lies in the AC transit footprint, and BART+ GG transit + SMART would connect Santa Rosa to the bay very efficiently

And like if BART+ACE get coordinated it would connect SF to the HSR IOS like a decade before it connects to the transbay center

I think the hassle with building on the sm bridge is that with the sharp turn and high elevation the trains would need to significantly pull down speed for safety through the winter. The transbay tube is a bit magical bc the trains can approach 80mph with few service restrictions. If you were reduced to the ~40mph wet weather speeds that pop up in the winter, plus perhaps restrictions based on wind, it may be difficult to make the timing competitive with driving for a lot of folks. I’m a big fan of an airport-connector transbay tube which would connect to the sfo wye and join up with the oak beige line but that’s just my preference
