I don't like this happening, and there should be transparency in all moderation decisions, but some of these points make no sense.

There is essentially no expectation of privacy on threadiverse platforms. Everything is public and probably already being used to train models.

There is no private messaging system. Direct messages are unencrypted and potentially visible to any instance admins. They and should not be used to share anything sensitive.

Personally, I agree (we would never do this in a large community for the record). But yes, there are people who think that they can "kill" a small community with downvotes because they don't like the topic.

The sad thing is, it's true. In a community where most posts have under 5 or so votes, one person coming in and systematically downvoting *every* post will keep people from seeing it who may be interested. If someone doesn't like a topic, they can block the community, but when they take steps to prevent others from seeing it, that's toxic. It's bad for the health of the platform.

It seems like thre are really only a couple of options, and I haven't found many review or examples that show enough detail to compare them.

Jellyfin has a [bookshelf plugin](https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-plugin-bookshelf) that seems to be able to handle it. Audiobooks look to be accessed through the main client app, and ebooks through a companion app like [JellyBook](https://github.com/JellyBookOrg/JellyBook), which also claims to handle audiobooks.

On the other hand, there is [Audiobookshelf](https://noted.lol/audiobookshelf-a-self-hosted-audiobook-and-podcast-server-with-phone-apps/), which specializes in audiobooks, but also claims to host ebooks. It has a number of client apps, but none that I found mention eBook reading.

I've found a couple of other solutions that seem more specialized. Maybe one of those?

I want to be able to read and listen on an Android device, preferably with a native app. I have a few comics, but mostly interested in books and audiobooks. I already have a Jellyfin server setup.

I remember this was a huge phenomenon when it came out and people were recording it on their home VCR's and playing it back frame by blurry frame. News programs reported on it. Serious people discussed the reasons why they thought it was fake, as though it wasn't just grainy footage of a plaster dummy stuffed with spiced meats.

Yes, I know that the are dozens of notes apps. I'm looking for recommendations based on a few features that I like:

- nice design (including color coding)
- easy checklists
- sharing - this one is key. I use a shared shopping list and we both need to add and edit.
- pinning and archiving (hidden notes)

I don't mind running it from my homelab server, but that is not a requirement. Does anyone use a notes app that you love? Let me know!

Great! Thank you for the gorgeous app. I really love the style, and I think the personalized feed is brilliant.

On my device, the lemmy hyperlink in the [test post](https://lemmy.world/comment/11514952) is still opening outside the app. I'm not sure how other web apps handle this but it would be the only additional change that would make it a perfect score.

As an aside, I would love to see it as a PWA or standalone app. I don't know if that's on your roadmap but I think it would be neat.

# An Apps Experiment

## Introduction

This is an experiment I performed out of curiosity, and I have a few big disclaimers at the bottom. Basically, I've seen a lot of comments recently about one app or another not displaying something right. Lemmy has been around for a while now and can no longer be considered an experimental platform.

Lemmy and the apps that people use to access the platform have become an important part of people’s lives. Whether you are checking the app weekly or daily, and whether you use it to stay up on the news or to stay connected to your hobby, it’s important that it works. I hope that this helps people to see the extent of the challenge, and encourages developers to improve their apps, too.

## How I did it

I wanted to investigate objectively how accurately each app displays text of posts and comments using the standard Lemmy markdown. Markdown is a standard part of the Lemmy platform, but not all apps handle it the same. It is basically what gives text useful formatting.

I used the latest release of each app, but did not include pre-releases. I only included apps that have released an update in the last 6 months, which should include most apps in active development. ~~I was unable to test iOS-exclusive apps, so they are not included either. In all, 16 apps met the inclusion criteria.~~

Each app was rated in 5 categories: Text, Format, Spoilers, Links, and Images. I chose these mostly based on the wonderful Markdown Guide from marvin (npub1zha…3znm), which was posted about a year ago in !meta@sffa.community ([here](https://sffa.community/post/105)).

I checked whether each app correctly displayed each category, then took the overall average. Each category was weighted equally. **Text** includes italic, bold, strong, strikethrough, superscript, and subscript. **Format** includes block quotes, lists, code (block and inline), tables, and dividers. **Spoilers** includes display of hidden, expandable spoilers. **Links** includes external links, username links, and community links. **Images** included embedded images, image references, and inline images.

Out of a possible perfect 10, only 3 apps displayed *all* markdown correctly:

Although *some* of those kidnapped from Israel were given adequate food, clothing, bedding, and other necessities (what I assume you mean by "treated well"), others were subjected to psychological torture, denied lifesaving medicine and basic medical treatment, and assaulted, including children.

All of them were taken from their homes at gunpoint, some of them pulled from under the bodies of their murdered families, some of them non-fatally shot or seriously injured. Some of them have no homes or families to return to. The hostage release appeared orderly because Hamas threatened to harm their other family still held hostage if they said anything bad, and because Israel and Egypt worked together from Oct. 8 to carefully plan the safe and orderly transfer. Hamas in the West Bank and the PA had basically no plan to receive the released Palestinian prisoners, so there was chaos.

The whole "hostages were treated well" is such a weird talking point to me.
