I mean, "What are the real bottlenecks these merchants cite as a deterrent for accepting Bitcoin directly"?

I will guess:

- - Volatility issues (Main bottleneck)
- Unclear regulatory policies around Bitcoin, especially about taxation (CGT)
- Then there's also the issue of "lack of technical know-how", and the disheartening case of "fraud/crime" association with Bitcoin.

The first two are the most common issues we've seen from our research surveys.

However, it is relatable why this is the case; Bitcoin is the hardest, scarcest monetary asset in the world, with price volatility.

The volatility of Bitcoin is the common ground for which both merchants and Bitcoiners might be reluctant to accept and pay in it respectively.

Most merchants run on Fiat, accepting and holding Bitcoin means possibility that their Fiat capital dips following a Bitcoin dip, and for Bitcoiners, nobody will be happy to spend their Bitcoin when the Fiat value is down, especially if they acquired such Bitcoin when the Fiat value is higher.

So the ultimate solution is making Bitcoin the base layer for moving fiat value. This helps the merchant accept Bitcoin confidently, and also ensures that any Bitcoiner can pay with Bitcoin at any point in time.

One of such solutions is "Fiat Channels", a lightning protocol specification that enables the creation of synthetic assets on Lightning. There are several other implementations like this such as "Stable Channels".

With these protocols, merchants could accept Bitcoin while retaining the "stable" Fiat value of the Sats as at when received.

MoneyGadger may set up a Host and offer these services to her clients, ensuring that Sats continue to exchange hands while carrying Fiat values across.

A week ago, our team member albo (npub1lsn…yxc7) gave a talk at the 13th Socratic seminar of the #bitdev community in Abuja, Nigeria, during the monthly Bitcoin developers meetup.

During the session, he introduced IMMORTAN Library and Hosted channels, the two Lightning implementations designed to foster Bitcoin adoption in local communities by advancing self-custodial mobile Lightning usage and cost-effective, community-focused Lightning onboarding.

Immortan is a lightweight, mobile Lightning library with advanced privacy features, robust channel-recovery options, and redundancy against frequent force-channel closures.

Hosted channel, on the other hand, is a custodial Lightning channel protocol specification. Hosted channels enable anonymous custodial channels to be opened by any node (Host).
Like a normal Lightning channel, Hosted channels are fully private because preimage generation, onion formation, and route finding all still happen on the client side, whilst the Host (routing Node) holds the funds and does the job of forwarding payments for the client.

Valet Bitcoin is a wallet software that currently runs on Immortan Library and Hosted channels, forked and maintained by Standard Sats (npub1py0…mh59).

The ultimate thing is that, if and when banks begin to use Bitcoin as the reserve asset for issuing paper currencies (e-cash, Fiat-channels assets), they'll hardly ever run fractional banking, and if they do, they'll be at risk of irredeemable bank run since there wouldn't be the Fed back-stop to fall on because the Fed can't mint more Bitcoins.

Users will be more attracted to banks running full reserve banking. Also, banks who run fractional banking to the level it is done today, may have to ensure that their users are consenting to the fractional banking practice, and that they understand the risk. This also means that users who choose to take the risk will benefit adequately in the reward via good deposit interests unlike pennies being handed out today.

Mobile penetration is the easiest route to an exponential human Bitcoin adoption.

IMMORTAN Library is a mobile-focused lightning library that makes it possible to have lightweight lightning nodes on Android devices. Ensuring that people can set up and use Lightning in self-custodial mode with very few resources and less node management headache.

God is not easily divisible, moveable across space and time, can easily be counterfeited (hence requiring trusted verifiers).

Even if the central banks decide to use it as reserve asset backing their currencies, auditing their reserves is as good as impossible, which means we'd easily slip back to bastardized debasement/dilution, which would gradually lad to inflation again.

Whatever a select group of humans has sole control over can never be fully trusted.

Just like Hosted channels, any entity can run a Lightning node with the Fiat channels plugin and offer this solution to any user. Absolutely, there's a long way to go, but at the same time, it is not that far out again. A lot of things have been built; only adoption is slowing down, but it'd catch up.

When you research free banking and why it "failed", you'll find out that most of the acclaimed reasons why it was stopped were largely things that the government could've managed if they wished to.

One of the reasons, and what may be considered as the major reason, was "war financing". The government needed to exert full control over money to be able to finance wars. They wouldn't be able to do that if different banks kept issuing different currencies that often had different values.

Bitcoin, from design, is made for free banking, and unlike when gold and silver (whose reserve claims were not easily verified) were used as reserve assets, bitcoin, on the other hand, is readily verified through several cryptographic proof of reserve systems.

Today, we already have financial solutions that make Bitcoin the base layer on which currencies can be issued.

Fiat channel is one of those, and many other versions of the same solution exist.

FIAT CHANNEL:

Fiat channels enable the creation of synthetic stable value fiat assets on the Lightning Network, with Bitcoin serving as the underlying asset being transferred.

The Fiat channel protocol was coined from the original Hosted Channels protocol. In this case, when a client receives Sats over the channel, the Fiat value as at when received is locked in as a stable balance, while the Sats valur keep floating with the Bitcoin price movement.

To ensure that the client can always spend the sats worth of their locked-in stable amount (at any given Bitcoin market price), the Host (who's the lightning node runner) must hedge the fiat exposure of the client, and must balance this hedging each time a withdrawal or deposit is made.

So at all times, what the client sends out when making payment is Sats, but the face value is denominated in Fiat.

So the Host must have Sats on his node to route the client's payment, and must hedge the client's fiat exposure, balancing these positions at all times.

This is a typical free banking setup where several Hosts can run lightning nodes with Fiat channel plugins and hedging mechanisms to offer this service to any willing client.

We are currently researching how to enforce cryptographically verifiable proof of reserve and hedging capital/margin.

This is a work in progress, but so far it has been implemented on Valet, and users can already open Fiat channels to our SATM nodes.

This is a very simple and useful beginner Lightning tips, and you have very well captured the main points.

To you "point 4", we'll just add an extra wallet recommendation for beginners; Valet Bitcoin Wallet.

Valet is an Android-only, self-custodial and lightweight Bitcoin and Lightning wallet. With Valet, beginners have access to actual mobile Lightning nodes without without any LSP intermediation or any sophisticated custodial setup. Users can open and close channels to and from any node, manage their liquidities with various felxibilities.

Wallet recovery is of two kinds; The first involves only the use of seed phrases, and this recovers on your on-chain funds. When this method is used, any lightning channel the user has will be force closed and the balances be returned to their on-chain wallet.

The other method is seed phrase + locally saved backup file. Once a user sets up a lightning connection on their device, a backup file containing the state of their lightning connection is saved locally in their downloads folder. During recovery, a user combines this local backup file and the seed phrase to recover their on-chain balance, as well as all active lightning channel.

For beginners who may yet not have some Bitcoins to open a normal Lightning channel, valet also has a custodial lightning implementation called "Hosted channels". Just like in a normal channel opening, a valet user must scan the QR code of a lightning routing node that supports Hosted channel, and request a channel opening. It does not require liquidity commitment. More like a credit channel that starts with a zero balance.

The user can only send out payments when they've received sats on their channel. It retains the anonymity of the normal Lightning channels because the Host does not know who the client is.

The mistake we often make is the assumption that people (read no coiners) often understand the implications of inflation, even in "stable" economies.

Reality on ground is that human inclination tilts towards whatever it perceives as safe. Even in highly inflated economies, people hardly accept Bitcoin (writing from first hand experience).

So for anyone who's not an actual Bitcoiner, Bitcoin is not entirely a safe haven cos of price fluctuation.

Given that bias, the easier way Bitcoin's adoption as a medium of exchange actually grows is that Bitcoiners who understand what Bitcoin is must be willing to spend it, and must learn to request to make payments with Bitcoin whether a merchant actively accepts it or not.

It is the easiest and most effective form of awareness and sensitization. Again, without actual demand, at best, it'd be Bitcoiner merchantsthat will most often display willingness and readiness to accept Bitcoin for payments.

Users must be willing to spend Bitcoins as money and not coerced through unsustainable incentives.

If anything, it looks like trying to cut corners!! People who hold Bitcoin must be convinced enough and willing to spend it by requesting to use it when they need to make payments.

That is the natural and only sustainable way bitcoin becomes a widely used means of exchange, especially considering the fact that most merchants run fully on Fiat.

If we make a survey, you'll find out that most merchants who give these discounts are probably Bitcoiners who already understands the point, or merchants that use POS's (e.g Square POS) where the POS provider most likely makes up for the discount, because they're trying to promote Bitcoin usage.

There's hardly any merchant who's not a Bitcoiner that'd give discount when users opt to pay in Bitcoin (that is if they agree to accept it), and Bitcoin becomes an actual medium of exchange when a merchant who probably does not fully understand the core values of Bitcoin starts accepting it because it is widely accepted as money.

Hosted channels is an implementation included to ease onboarding for new Bitcoiners who may not have both the funds and knowledge to use Lightning on self-custody from the start. Hi Sachin, we built Valet, a lightweight, self-custodial Bitcoin/Lightning wallet.

Wallet was built with the IMMORTAN Library, a mobile-focused lightning network stack. Valet houses an actual lightweight Lightning node on the mobile device, and it does not rely on LSP provisions to work.

This is an assumption that more people will use Lightning, thereby resulting in less onchain activites and hence poor security, but that assumption is largely incorrect.

If anything, the use of Bitcoin via on-chain and Lightning will actually be balanced out because, if more people start using Lightning, there'll be fewer transactions on-chain, hence on-chain fees will drastically reduce, making it an incentive again for people to use on-chain, especially since it ensures better finality and security than Lightning.

Also, the idea of mobile Lightning nodes makes it a lot easier. With mobile Lightning nodes like what you have in the Valet Bitcoin wallet (https://github.com/standardsats/valet/releases), people can seamlessly use Lightning, as well as easily switch to on-chain usage when it becomes more economically incentivized.

But the ratio of transactions happening on the Bitcoin on-chain network will always be higher than the ratio of transactions happening on the Lightning network. The finality and security guarantee of using Bitcoin on-chain is why this assumption will always be true.

We often quickly forget that the world currently runs on a government-imposed Fiat Standard and that virtually everything is intricately tied to it, most especially the essence of human survival: "trade and commerce".

The chain of commerce is often long and heavily intertwined with the Fiat system, so we should not expect the shift to happen from the Vendors first.

Valet makes it easy to use Bitcoin both on-chain and via Lightning, all in self-custody.

On the other hand, it also houses "Hosted Lightning chanells", just like ecash, hosted channels use a Host/Client setup where the Host is any entity running a Lightning node and a client is a Valet wallet user (or any wallet that implements the client code).

Users open a Hosted channel like a normal channel, by scanning a Host node's QR code, preserving their full privacy because preimage generation, tour routing still happen on the client. It is custodial because the Host keeps the funds in their node.

Users can easily sweep sats from Hosted channels to their normal Lightning channels without any permission.

There's equally a CG tax on Bitcoin for Global Southerners, especially most of the very large countries.

We have millions of Bitcoiners all over the globe, so perhaps the best route for now is for all Bitcoiners to make it a duty to always first "request to be paid for their services, jobs in Bitcoin, albeit we know that some employees or contractors wouldn't oblige, but the subtle awareness that "people are willing to accept this thing" for payment, registers in the mind.

Also, we should always casually ask to pay in Bitcoin whenever we are about to make payment.

Demand creates supply, and people like to do things when they see that there's a market demand for it.

Could you please checkout Valet Bitcoin wallet, and make a review of it. Valet is a lightweight, mobile, Bitcoin and Lightning wallet.

We built Valet, forked from the popular Simple Bitcoin Wallet (SBW) which has now dropped Lightning implementation.

Valet has self custodial Lightweight Lightning nodes on mobile. So users can open channels to any nodes, manage their channels and liquidity. Blockchain data is however fetched from random external electrum servers, however, users can use custom electrum servers if they wish.

The lightweight mobile Lightning node is designed with the IMMORTAN LIBRARY.

Valet also has the "Hosted channels Lightning Implementation". Hosted channels is a custodial lightning implementation that enable seamless onboarding of new users to Lightning. It uses a Host/Client setup, where the Host is any entity running a Lightning node with the Hosted channels protocol plugin, and a client is any wallet software with the Hosted channels client side implementation like Valet.

A client and a Host sets up channels without liquidity commitment, making it easy to onboard people who are starting out to use the Lightning Network. This is particularly useful for merchants in Bitcoin communities because It removes the headache of managing channels and the need for liquidity without compromising privacy.

Clients remain anonymous because the preimage generation and onion formation and route selection still happen on client side, so a Host would never know whom a client is.

A fraud proof exists in the form of a "cross signed channel state". This is a record of every transaction within the channel, kept by both the client and the Host. Since it is custodial, the host can still be malicious and steal the funds, but the cross signed channel state is a cryptographic record that serves as an evidence of fraud or maliciousness.

Hosted channels is particularly useful to Bitcoin communities and circular economies, where community leaders can run Lightning nodes and provide Host services to users within the community.

In broader sense, renowned entities may also offer the services of a Host to the public. The privacy ensures that users (clients) can not necessarily be censored since the Host would never know who they are.

Here's a confirmation that we will go Bitcoin standard!!! Bitcoin is perfect for "Private-Public Partnership" the governor talked about, but he's yet to understand it.

Brian rightly mentioned, Bitcoin is good for check and balances of deficit spending. Bitcoin will seamlessly be integrated into the Fiat banking system as the base asset, ensuring trust for the value of currencies issued by banks.

There'll be full Bitcoin server banks and there will be fractional reserve banks. People will decide which one they'll trust and use more. - Hal Finney (of legendary memory) predicted this.

It is only a matter of time, and a very short time at that!!
