Thus, the first rock deliberately chipped to make a sharp edge was a discovery and not a meme, but when the chipper was taught to someone or someone learned it by seeing the chipper in action, then it became a meme: a thing learned from another and potentially passed along to others.

Corporations generally prospered when their habitat included things like beneficial government controls that ensured a level playing field and restricted unfair competition (and monopoly power), and kept fraud out of securities. The more tentative regulatory environment today affects corporate health and survivability.

Cy (npub1ekj…wjxt), I appreciate your letting me know you won't read Blackmore's essay, but informing me is not necessary. It was an offering, not an assignment. Read or not, as you please.

I also enjoy condemning the wrongs the Roman Catholic church has committed, and they are legion, but I introduced that organization into this discussion because it has survived for a long time and is sustained not only by money but also by the devotion and efforts of its adherents.

Organisms whose diet has become overspecialized (koalas, pandas, etc.) are at a survival disadvantage, so perhaps complex memes with too narrow a diet also are at risk.

Some complex memes (e.g., Roman Catholic church) have a broad diet, getting energy from multiple sources, but today corporations and society more broadly have narrowed their diet/focus to one nutrient: money/profit. By focusing solely on money, they develop blind spots and become more vulnerable.

Such entities show a lot of organism-like behavior (e.g., immune systems) and often have long lifespans (cf. Roman Catholic church). Just as organisms can fall prey to parasites that evade the immune system and kill the organism, so can corporations. I am thinking of the zombie-ant fungus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophiocordyceps_unilateralis.
