I have a question about your editing. Of course the sharp details and rich color must be on the bird. But I see the mottled background is very grainy. Do you usually mostly edit with only the foreground bird and then not fuss with the grainy DoF around?

I don’t mess too much with editing like I used to maybe 4-5 years ago. I do tend to use a noise setting more lately so it may be the whole image comes out softer. I’d like your perspective. Your birds are always so full of character!

Yep. I have to wait till John decides he’s ready to go get his dog. He’s never had his own pet but helped take care of the family pets. He had told me he may wait until my son Drew no longer lives here at home because he wants to have no one interfering so he can train a puppy. Ok, so this part is not so silent. While standing at the door of the instructor I waited for him to finish grading my 100 state-required test which I had to take supervised, with a pencil and mark my answers on a form. I am now certified by the State that I am qualified to safely manage my home and basic caregiving.

I’m 74. I’ve been a full time caregiver for my son for many years. I’ve trained likely a couple dozen caregivers in our home since 2009. The State suddenly requires me to be certified before I can continue taking care of him. Do I know how to make a call to 911. Do I know how to wash my hands. Oh, here’s a tough one—how long can I leave food out before some may need to be put back in the refrigerator. Thud. Aaaargh.

Oh yes I do relate. Sometimes my perception seems to have days that seem absolutely endless but not in a good way, and then the days time flies lickity-split and you wonder how time can pass that quickly. Yes I’m sure everyone feels as I describe but I do know time feels quite a bit different.

Seasons and holidays seem to have accelerated quite a bit. It’s March and next month it’s June, right? In Arizona we didn’t really get a Winter this year and holy smokes it appears we are skipping Spring too! This part I describe is apparent to everyone but I bet some of us Olds are far more aware!

This is how one of my iPhone photos looks on Flickr in one of my albums. Sometimes I wait a while befor I stare at an iPhone photo to see if I want to monkey with it a bit more in editing. I try really hard to present a photo in a faithful photo with true color as I saw it in the moment I took the photo. It’s mighty tempting to boost the color because over the years I see more and more people doing this. The saturation is too deep or contrast too sharp. Landscapes are tricky because so many use HDR to heighten a fantasy appearance far more magical than reality. Lovely scarf! Before I read the alt text I was zooming in to see the white beads detail of this scarf. Ha-ha that it was the heads of your blocking pins! And then I was glad to see the interlocking foam pad used for it. I just bought 3 sets in different colors to use in the garage. I haven’t used a few yet so I’m thinking about resurrecting a crochet scarf project since I now have a way to block it.

Also, since I see two images across when I view posts in my stream on mobile the composition of vertical stripes on left with you straight forward head on for the right was pleasing. Very much a satisfying view to see scarf laid flat and then cuddled about you on right.

Oooh, I hoped you would come by to tell me what we had. I am quite sure it was the most authentic Indian food I’ve had- unlike most Americanized Indian restaurants here in Arizona. They cooked it while I waited, another plus! I was the only non-Indian there who picked up an order. In the half hour wait I bet a dozen Indian men came in and out to pick up their orders and it was late for the lunch crowd—2 pm.

Holy cow, what an amazing lunch today from an Indian restaurant/grocery only a mile away and we never knew it. I got a “curry combo”. It was a Too Good to Go order through the app on my phone. Restaurants and groceries with delis who offer a “surprise package” for $6.99 instead of full price when they are close to closing for the day.

We ate it, splitting 3 ways with extra rice. Very necessary because so much spice!

We figured out the fried breaded chicken - which is far better than American fried chicken. Of course we guessed possible lentil soup or sauce. Okra seems to be on left bottom. The other things are a mystery. I believe I discovered in image search that the small round orange thing must be a desert called gulab jalum. No idea anything else. Maybe the white sauce/ soup is fermented yogurt something? Saved Drew and I from burning up too much. Hard to imagine there it is tucked away nearby and never saw it.#Food #Curry #Indian #TooGoodToGo

But in his way of a “conversational” style with you/audience. He starts bringing up Chicago and the attack on the whole apartment building at 9:00. So far today I have 1 long shelf of my antique glass display case with minerals and crystals rearranged with my new, get this—labubu display cases added to increase display space and organize better. I found this idea on Reddit for the sub-Reddit I follow for collectors.

It’s been frustrating for years that I didn’t have a workable way to use the height of a shelf space to display specimens better. Right now I am just fitting in the new cases. Oh dear. Just learned the Really Big Show is scheduled for next weekend at the State Farm Stadium which is just 1.5 miles down the road from our home. Somehow I think they needed the place where the Super Bowl is held when in Arizona. Probably the hottest ticket around.

Trump is coming, of course. I bet the whole Cabinet comes. And likely foreign leaders too, wanting to get in on this. Do you think security will be tight, much? Somehow I think all the Republicans in House and Senate will be coming. All manner of religious leaders. I bet leaders in other countries will also try to get in on this. I have a headache already, thinking of the drama.

Peacock at the library today. We like going to the Glendale Public Library next to the Saguaro Ranch Park. They’ve been known as the library with the peacocks for many years. I’d read that due to complaints (by neighbors?) the flock has been reduced from 160 to 20-30. Supposedly several zoos or out-of-state parks took them. Its very sad to see generational hatred being taught to young children by their parents and churches. These people are pulling their children right out of schools for homeschooling. Then there are hundreds of thousands taken out of public schools into charter schools and private schools. The segregation here in Arizona is shocking.

Consider that as an adult I have lived in these states: Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Connecticut, Missouri and Texas. You can imagine my surprise moving to Arizona when I see the most racism and religious intolerance here I’ve ever seen in my life.

I’ve never seen such hatred towards LGBTQ and especially trans, before. Same for stunning intolerance for people who are homeless/unhoused. Classicism is a huge problem here and there is a real disdain for teachers and those who are highly educated in much of the state. I wish very much I could hang on to some pockets of equilibrium and diversity here but I’ve never seen them. And I’ve looked.

Maybe I could feel that way about 50 years ago. But I never saw hate from people I know and live with like the blind fury hate against people I care about. It feels like “both sides-ism” to make it a simple issue. It was the case for most of my life I could see opposing sides had more in common than not.

But where I’ve lived for 21 years now I have seen only hate from one side, and here it’s the majority side. The hate I describe is not just ideology, politics, religion, racial, etc but truly hate that is actions that are cruel and inhuman. Remember this is a state where the most extreme of the MAGA, white supremicists, white nationalists, Christian Nationalists, ProudBoys, 3percenters,MinuteMan Militias, TurningPointUSA and more are everywhere. The cops here are overwhelmingly white supremacists and everyone knows it.

Arizona is internationally known for hate crimes. Does anyone here not of the majority I’ve listed above ever feel safe? Are there any of us “on this side” that these people acknowledge as having more in common than not with them? Not that I’ve ever experienced here or even heard of.

I doubt you belong to a neighborhood-only group where you are called NextDoor. I spent 1/2 hour reading up on posts there from neighbors. Probably about 200 families is our NextDoor determined “neighborhood”. I rarely go but 3-4 times a year to catch up if someone lost a dog or found one and for me to post things I’m giving away. It was the most bizarre (to me) mix of Republicans and MAGA alternations between tears and prayers for Charlie Kirk, lots of praying, lots of people announcing they are ready to join militias and vigilante groups to defend Christian white folks, and…nothing else.

If I ever see some kind of recognition here that others are even allowed to be left in peace or at least not attacked, maybe I will go back to an ecumenical attitude again.

I once had such a piece, maybe even the same size. Convinced my husband back in 1975 that we needed to take a weekend trip to Mauston WI where I used to live during the summers in the woods at the back of a rural restaurant I worked for. We did and went up there from central Illinois.

What he didn’t know is I arranged with my former boss up there that if I ever came back to visit, I’d get that sculptural driftwood I’d spotted in the nearby river. Imagine the cars passing by us, as our old red VW bug with the giant “antlers” was going South, a bit below the speed limit.

So from the depths of my internal despair yesterday my youngest son John pretty much forced me out of my bedroom around 2 pm and took me to a store he knew I’d like but never heard of. It was the most expansive used bookstore I’ve ever seen and it was laid out with great care and shelves labeled too. We spent about an hour or so exploring and I walked out with My Precious, 4 new old books that are really hard to find let alone priced to buy. It was birthday #74 for me. John had this surprise for me and then we had time left to go to eat or a movie. Chose a movie and drove fast another 20 miles to Tempe. That was part 1 of 3 for my birthday celebrating. ❤️

I had really hoped to drop Substack by now but the unfortunate reality is there are about maybe 20 people still there who I subscribed to maybe 5-6 years ago before it was apparent that yes the ownership of Substack is ok with Nazis. I am happy that a good number of those I followed for years left and got onto safer and more neutral places.

But dang, I felt like I lost so much when Twitter exploded and I knew it would be harder to find and continue following some of the best.

I was disgusted so many thought Threads and Bluesky were going to be great when it sure seemed obvious to me there were clear problems on the horizon those places. I knew the Fediverse was far more appropriate for me and for mutuals who are not placing content within a space that is paywalled or governed by owners.

Sadly, I saw yet again most people really want a popular place that makes it easy to join and doesn’t require much time and effort to socialize. Here, I love love love how I can have my custom-designed timeline I curate. But yes, it does take effort and does need care and feeding. I am now doubting enough good people will actually leave the easy homes of Facebook/Meta/Threads and Bluesky or Instagram. Not seeing a return, ever, to our better days when the Internet and social media was a great expanse of hope and promise for so many.

Son has asked me to try making a key lime pie because he’s excited we have a bumper crop of limes. And he has not been a fan of this pie in the past. Granted, we’ve only had the thawed Edwards Pie version which is one of other son’s favorite pie.

I hesitated because I’ve always thought this pie would be hard to make. But if one of my son’s asks for some kind of food I can cook, I’ll try it. This is the one I’ll try. IF successful I’ll make a post with photos. (Thinking of Norcal Gma 2 (npub15w9…2huq) and her delectable 2 crust pies now)

Great news! They are ripening right now! 😄 I tried the tips offered by you all and also the last site linked by KellyAnn Romanych (she/her) (npub1vt4…njlg) which was the most specific one for my needs. Even then I tried the 4 methods of: slight give, twist off tree to pick, smell and color. The ONE I tried (tip was try 1 and if too tart leave rest to try another day) had a very small amount of “give”. I was able to twist it off tree without dropping all the rest there. It was bright green but had a little yellow on one side, and after I picked it. stem end did smelly “limey”.

Son and I tried each half this key lime small lime by squeezing juice on a tortilla chip and a sprinkle of salt on top. (I was shown this by a Hispanic friend in Tucson at a full Mexican restaurant). We were happy. Now we’ll wait a day or 2 longer and pick only as we will use that day. I think since we extra watered this tree over the last 5 months is why there’s a bumper crop of limes.

When should I pick them?
Are these limes ripe when yellow?
Do I use them like regular limes?
FYI our old tree may be over 30 years old and likely had poor or limited care in the last 10 years. It has been dying and lost about 1/3 the tree in the last 3 years. In extreme heat the leaves quickly go to yellow or yellow green. But the live branches are producing the most and largest limes in three years. Help!
