I think my root problem is my low-level nihongo. Messages will flash on the screen, probably telling me something important, but I can’t parse what they say, so I have to complete each route by trial and error.

People love to criticise Pound’s understanding of how Chinese characters are formed, but he does acknowledge here that they have a phonetic component. The problem is that he seems to think they’re 90% ideogrammic and 10% phonetic when it’s actually the other way around.

I am calling BS on the anecdote about Gaudier Brzeska. Pound does say “a certain number,” but if there’s any truth to this story that number must be extremely small.

One frustrating thing about Classical literature is that a massive portion of it is totally lost, or exist only in more-or-less fragmentary form, and of the works we do have, we often don’t even know who the author is. This is from Russell’s introduction to On the Sublime, written by somebody maybe named Longinus.

As Russell says of Longinus and the man he addressed the work to, though, “But who these people were, and what circle they moved in, are less important questions than what the book says, and what place it holds in the history of criticism.”

A leader the people must have. The state of the human race is such that the vast majority of all people will always be passive until roused to action by someone with a more powerful spirit than theirs. There is no kingdom without a king, there is not even a republic without a president. Even assemblies with no fixed positions have, by influence, their chief men informally, because there is no case where the talent of bringing others into action is distributed equally.
To take the negative perspective, even more than positive virtue guiding a good ruler, it is trivial to note that a bad ruler who gives a poor example will inevitably cause destruction, corruption, and rot in an organization. In my private life I am an accountant, and when one is taught to perform financial audits and consider a company’s internal fraud risk, one of the key items one looks for is the ‘Tone at the Top.’ Is the boss a lush? Is he abrasive? Is he honest? Does he pass blame? Even in the dilute systems of government and leadership present in our society it is the visible top of a system which receives our greatest attention because the head of a corporate body commands a spiritual influence on the rest before even entering into any question of explicit command.

Greenhorn brings up a side point about the overuse of the word “tragedy” in that article, and it’s something that annoys me all the time. In a tragedy, a noble person is destroyed by a single fault, classically hubris but not always. So, Othello is a tragic figure because he’s a great man but has one vice, jealousy, which Iago stokes to destroy him.

This woman was not at all noble. She was a wicked person, doing something wicked, who was killed as a result of her wickedness and stupidity. As Greenhorn puts it, “ this is sad only in a Christian sense, in the sense that a fallen soul has met its end. But there is nothing sad in an evil woman bent on doing evil and being struck down while doing an evil thing.”
