In America our culture has shit on the elderly, the destruction of the multigenerational was a loss to the elderly, their children, and the grand children who have lost their support and more importantly their insight and knowledge of the past. It was a loss for everyone but the tax man. You're right, but the benefits outweighed the negative benefits.
