The battle is considered a holy day for Catholics named Our Lady of Victory, later changed to Our Lady of the Rosery, due to all of the European forces praying the rosery before going into battle, which many believe caused God to intervene and change the direction of the wind in favor of the League over the Turks. The fleet docked in a Venetian colony on the coast of modern-day Albania and word of the victory quickly spread. Celebrations broke out with many shopkeepers closing up for the day, with signs reading &#34;The Turk is dead! Gone to celebrate!&#34;. Word then spread to the rest of Europe where more spontaneous celebrations broke out. In May of 1866 an assassin attempts to kill Otto von Bismarck Chancellor of Prussia. The assassin misses his shots and is disarmed and beaten up by Bismarck and arrested. Later in the month tensions between Prussia and the Austrian Empire increased resulting in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 breaking out. On June 20th the Kingdom of Italy joins the war on Prussia&#39;s side. In late June Prussia invades Bohemia winning several victories against the Austrians. Austrian General Ludwig von Benedek withdraws his army to a town known as Königgrätz and fortifies the area. Prussian scouts locate the Austrians sometime later.<br/><br/>The Prussian Army arrives on July 2nd led by Helmuth von Moltke. The Prussians have 220k men(125k initially arrive), while the Austrians have 215k men. The Prussians were armed with a new type of rifle the Dreyse &#34;needle gun&#34; rifle. The needle rifle was the first bolt-action rifle invented and utilized breach reloading, which allowed the rifle to be reloaded and fired much faster than muzzle loading rifles. The needle also had the ability to be reloaded while the solider was laying down. On a rainy morning of July 3rd the battle began when Prussians under Eduard Von Fransecky crossed the Bystrice River and captured the town of Benatky from the Austrians and set-up positions in the forest outside of the town. At 8:30 am the main Prussian attack crosses the river and begins to push the Austrians back.<br/><br/>The Austrians counterattack and attempt to dislodge Fransecky&#39;s men from Benatky, but the Prussians continue to hold their positions, with Fransecky telling his men &#34;we hold here or we die&#34;. The Austrian generals argue with Ludwig von Benedek to launch a mass counter-attack against the Prussians. Benedek declines not wanting to give up the good defensive positions he has established. The Austrians continue to pressure Fransecky&#39;s position knowing if they breakthrough there they can route the Prussians. Fransecky quotes Duke Wellington during the Battle of Waterloo saying &#34;I wish the night would come or Blucher&#34;. But just as it seems the Austrians are about to score a breakthrough on Fransecky&#39;s position they stop and turn around. The Prussians are confused by this until they look behind them and see countless thousands of they countrymen in dark blue uniforms. Prince Friedrich Wilhelm&#39;s army has arrived.<br/><br/>The Prussians then launch an all-out attack which rapidly pushes back the Austrians. The Austrians attempt one last counter-attack which fails. Having lost the battle the Austrians retreat as night falls and abandon Königgrätz. The Prussians lost around 9k men while the Austrians lost 44k. Sometime later the Peace of Prague is signed ending the war.
