And the issue, for anyone else who stumbles on this thread, was the 16MHz oscillator circuit (marked X1 on the main board).

The board’s out and yes, I was a bit of a barbarian and, since I’m not going to be using the composite out, cut the wires to it instead of desoldering them. If I ever need it, I can just connect the wires again.

So the other day my Onewheel started pushing back at relatively low speeds. My first thought was, “must be tire pressure.” Pumped up the tire, went out again, same thing. Hmm… could I have inadvertently changed the shaping?

So I fire up the app to find the setting for the shaping and I’m stumped. There’s nothing about it on the main nav at the bottom. So I look under the hamburger menu and I find a Settings section and go there. Nope, nothing.

Wtf?

Literally after staring at the app for ten minutes I accidentally trigger the photo carousel and *bam!* get notified that the shaping has changed.

Which, clearly, is how I’d fumbled into onto the beginner setting when I ride Pacific.

The shaping, by the way, is what determines the character of your board and ride. It’s a major thing. It impacts safety. And in this app, it’s set by swiping on a control that looks like a photo gallery of OneWheel photos.

🤦‍♂️

Moral of the story for designers: make everyday actions simple to perform, yes, but, equally, make actions that are infrequently performed and/or could have potentially catastrophic consequences hard to perform. Also, make your controls look like controls and label them.

Tolerance cannot tolerate intolerance. Either democracies have constitutional protections and democratic institutions to enforce them to ensure fascism can never be voted into power or they are just fascisms in waiting.

Morning all! I was supposed to join screwlisp (npub1k64…eehk) for their Lispy Gopher Show podcast yesterday but time zone differences meant I had to send a recording instead which they discussed with questions from their mud (yep, it’s a geeky community) :)

I touched on the history of computing, the current challenge to our human rights and democracy with technofascism, and how the Small Web is one attempt to safeguard our freedoms by creating a peer-to-peer web owned and controlled by everyday people who use technology as an everyday thing. (And the role of design and simplicity in making this possible.)

New Kitten update

• 🥳 Kitten HTML templates and kitten.Component component render functions can now be async.

This is quite a big one and it took me finally biting the bullet and getting my head around generators in JavaScript to implement properly.

So now you can mix synchronous and asynchronous components as you like and if there are any asynchronous components in your templates they will automatically be awaited (even if you forget to use await) ;)

I’ll write a proper post/tutorial/documentation for it soon but for the time being enjoy the screenshots where a layout template gets the latest three posts from my mock fediverse public timeline service and displays them on the page.

The kitten.Component version also has a refresh button that streams a different three to the page.

For those of you unfamiliar with Kitten, this is all the code in either example. No scaffolding, nothing. Pop either into a file called index.page.js and run kitten in that folder and visit https://localhost to see the example run.

The only way things might change in the US is if the people rise up. Mass protests. A general strike. While I’m not giving up hope that that might happen, I’m also not holding my breath. In the meanwhile, those of us on the outside must do whatever we can band together and divest ourselves of reliance on the US… especially in critical areas (and that includes technology and Internet infrastructure) before we’re held to ransom. The US is not becoming a fascist country, it has become a fascist country and we’re all fair game.
