As a newbie, I looked into Alby, but it seemed more complex than I needed. Instead, I used the wallet that YakiHonne provided and parked a small amount there for zapping. A couple of weeks later, something happened to its connection and it showed a N/A balance and no transaction history. I sent a DM to YakiHonne asking what was going on and got no response. My funds reappeared a day later with no explanation.

I learned my lesson and switched to self custody using Wallet of Satoshi, which I downloaded because it looked simplest. So far, it has been fine.

- Fees for every step of the process to be absorbed into the state: original visa application fee, often legal fees on top of that, then ID photo and fingerprinting fees every 1-2 years, renewal fees every 1-2 years, and for some, black-market fees to get a renewal appointment without having to wait six months (5 years ago this was 300 eur)
- A special form and punishing fees aimed at people who had money abroad; when I left, the state could fine you 10k eur for a single mistake on that form
- If I retired, my foreign pension would be taxed as earned income

I lived in Mexico for a while, and my housemates were two young escapees from Venezuela. They had to leave to build their businesses; there was no other option. They were so traumatized by their experiences in Caracas that they were jumpy, nervous when a stranger approached, struggling to believe that it was safe to sit at a streetside cafe ... The shootouts and street battles back home were live streamed into my living room.

A leftist acquaintance, a professor who loved Comandante Marcos and every other trendy symbol, lectured them about how Chavismo supposedly brought literacy and equality to Venezuela. The guy was Mexican but was no different from the liberals I had left in the US. They believed every fairy tale that helped them feel morally superior. They supposedly knew what was best for people they would never meet and who lived lives they could never imagine.

I'll try to be as explicit as possible, including images and links. I also invite others to share their experiences and other historical events from this dictatorship. It all began with Chávez staging a coup on February 4, 1992. The official death toll was 32. The coup failed, and all those involved were imprisoned. However, from prison, Chávez orchestrated a second coup. Planes carrying coup plotters flew over Venezuela, bombing the country and causing between 171 and 300 casualties. This second coup failed again, yet Chávez was released years later to participate in the 1998 elections and govern from 1999 onward (by then, socialists were infiltrated everywhere; that's why they staged two coups).

In 2001, there was widespread discontent. A general strike began on December 10, and protests continued until April. Chávez had enacted 49 laws that negatively impacted the population on April 7. In 2002, Chávez began firing some PDVSA workers. By April 11, a march had formed in Caracas, and the Chávez government deployed snipers who opened fire, resulting in what became known as the El Silencio Massacre. On April 12, soldiers rose up against Chávez and detained him at Fort Tiuna, forcing him to resign. However, the following day, sympathetic soldiers brought him back.

Between 2002 and 2003, there was an oil strike. People opposed to the Chávez government, PDVSA workers, brought the entire oil industry to a standstill, partly in response to Chávez's forced layoffs and the 49 laws. On December 6, 2002, protesters in Plaza Francia in Altamira, Caracas, were fired upon. Officially, there were 3 dead and 13 wounded. After all the protests, 15,000 PDVSA workers were laid off—yes, 15,000—many forcibly dismissed by armed soldiers who entered various facilities. From that moment on, PDVSA began to be taken over by Chavismo, leaving run by government supporters with no knowledge of the oil industry.

After the oil strike, Chávez accused RCTV, Venezuela's main television network, of participating in the coup and the protests because it lent its press coverage to document the events. Chávez continued to harass them until, in 2007, he denied them the renewal of their broadcasting license, meaning they could no longer operate. This sparked protests, and on May 27, 2007, RCTV, the leading cultural voice of Venezuelan television, was silenced by Chávez after 53 years on the air, marking the beginning of media censorship. Following this, the channel was replaced by the pro-government TVes, which remains the main source of Chavista propaganda on television.

In 2009, Chávez ordered the imprisonment of Judge María Lourdes Afiuni, who had ordered the release of banker Eligio Cedeño. Cedeño had been imprisoned without evidence, and Chávez imprisoned her without a court order, using her as proof that either the justice system was on his side, or he would take action against anyone who opposed him. Afiuni was sent to a regular prison with the inmates she had previously sentenced, where she was subjected to abuse, rape, isolation, torture, and other forms of mistreatment.

In 2013, after Chávez's death, he had stipulated beforehand that Maduro would be in charge, even though he was not the vice president—that position belonged to Diosdado Cabello. Therefore, after Chávez's death, Maduro assumed power illegitimately. Elections were held in 2014, and all indications pointed to a victory for Henrique Capriles Radonski. However, by a very narrow margin, the National Electoral Council (CNE), by then controlled by Chavismo, awarded the victory to Maduro. This sparked the first protests against the Maduro regime. By that time, from the beginning of Chávez's government to the beginning of Maduro's, 206,592 civilians had been killed, either by the government or by organized crime. In these protests, the regime dropped the mask and began using torture, murder, and mass imprisonment, while simultaneously triggering an economic inflation crisis that devalued the bolívar to minuscule levels.

In 2017, another series of protests occurred, not only because of the opposition to Chavismo, but also because of inflation, the exodus, crime and corruption, not forgetting that at that time there was already a food and health crisis, oh yes, and the regime pulled the National Constituent Assembly out of thin air. Inflation had reached around 500% in just three years of Maduro's rule. 81,334 people were victims of violent deaths. The regime employed more force than in 2014: more soldiers, snipers, more people imprisoned, more people forced into exile, and torture became commonplace.

The last mass protests occurred in 2024. The pro-CNE (National Electoral Council) committed another electoral fraud, attempting to disqualify María Corina Machado, then her alternate, and later Edmundo González Urrutia. Despite all this, despite the Venezuelan exodus and Despite the ban on many people abroad voting, and despite attempts by the military and armed civilian groups to seize control of several polling stations, and despite the fact that a significant portion of the young population was not registered with the National Electoral Council (CNE) because it was already perceived as a corrupt institution, Edmundo González Urrutia won with 70% of the votes counted. Imagine if everyone had been able to vote. Even so, the CNE proclaimed Maduro the winner. Thousands of people were imprisoned, including minors, and the so-called "Operation Tun Tun" was implemented, in which regime officials went house to house kidnapping people without warrants, under the pretext of inciting hatred or terrorism. Incidentally, Venezuela has the highest number of terrorism convictions against its own citizens. It is worth mentioning that all of these prisoners were and continue to be tortured; many are missing, and others have died in prison.

I also want to highlight the following things, although I won't elaborate on them right now: the creation of collectives as a paramilitary apparatus, the extreme poverty that led people to eat stray animals, gang members who murdered people, like the young boys in Caracas, the sale of university degrees, the exodus on foot that claimed the lives of several people, women who were victims of human trafficking because they wanted to leave the country, broken families, the death of education, the takeover of all media outlets, internet censorship, Chavistas who betray their neighbors and relatives, prostitution within the army, the export of narcotics, the silent invasion by Cuba, Russia, and China, the privileges given to Chinese businesses, price gouging, the decline of the transportation system, the guerrillas, the illegal mining in the south of the country, the destruction of the Orinoco basin, the pollution of Lake Maracaibo, police corruption, the government's dealings with criminals, and the mega-gangs. The government's use of evangelical religion and the funding it receives, the increase in witchcraft among the population, the rise in mental illness, the high suicide rate, the miserable pensions of the elderly, and so much more, I'm not even mentioning it.

Do your local organizations make announcements only on Facebook? You can probably turn their pages into RSS feeds so you don't miss things you care about.

What you need:
- The URL of their FB page (must be public)
- An RSS creation service -- FetchRSS works
- An RSS reader

Usual process:
- Paste the FB page's URL into the feed creator
- Copy the feed URL that results
- Paste that into your feed reader

This has been working well for me, using FetchRSS and Feedly. When I click an item in the Feedly feed, I see the full Facebook post while not logged in to Facebook.

One hitch: The free version of FetchRSS requires you to be logged in to Facebook if you want to create more than one FB feed. You can either find another service or pay FetchRSS $4.95/month for up to 25 feeds and no FB login.

I've lived in two countries that heavily depend on Facebook. In my current city, cultural events, volunteer activities, warnings about street or water repairs, and most other announcements are published on Facebook, not on public websites and often not in news media. This is stupid, of course, but (so far?) we have ways to work around it.

Before jumping from one powerful word processor to another, you might try something simpler and see if it works for you. I'm a huge fan of Typora, which is a clean, minimalist app that lets me focus on writing and not on aligning bullet points or tab stops. It works on Windows and Linux. It uses markdown for formatting like boldface (easy to learn), and it can export to Word, PDF, HTML, and other formats, as well as importing Word etc.

I agree with people who say using a GrapheneOS phone for a while is a good step toward Linux. You get used to using a lighter, cleaner system on your phone, and you start to want the same experience on your computer.

Joplin can sync to several common cloud services, like OneDrive. It can also sync to any provider that supports the WebDAV protocol for reading and writing data. My email provider includes file storage that supports WebDAV. It gives me a WebDAV address that tells Joplin where to put my files, and I set up a key that gives Joplin permission. Maybe they're having trouble opening a bank account due to not having the right passport or address. Then mention only the part of the bigger picture that addresses their pain.

Example: Amy got kicked off Facebook for no reason and is pissed about it. Tell her Nostr will never kick her off and she can persuade her friends or favorite group to join, because they also won't be denied. By the way, Nostr is more fun with bitcoin, but it's not required. The end.

It's probably enough to get her onto Nostr and help her quickly find people to follow or bring her friends. She'll see the value for herself.

I'm glad I removed all my content from YouTube, Vimeo, and Twitter. I'm already shut out of Vimeo and suspect YouTube and Twitter will soon follow. Thanks to Nostr and nostr.build for giving me a safe place for my content.

Are you a meal prepper? I eat almost entirely out of my freezer, and this is one of my favorite things to eat. They're crunchy Moroccan-ish beef borek-like things, straight from the freezer to the air fryer, snarfed with thick sheep yogurt.

Meal prepper? Freeze them unbaked, then put a frozen one directly in the air fryer or hot oven.

Ingredients

Lots of butter

2 onions, finely chopped

1 kg ground beef

2 tsp paprika

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp ground black pepper

1 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp or less chili powder

1 tsp ground allspice

1 500-gr package of phyllo sheets (кори in Bulgaria) -- about 12 sheets

Directions

Saute the onion in about 30g of butter. Add the beef and brown it.

Add the spices and simmer for a while.

If there's more than a little oil, strain the beef. Optionally, also zap it with an immersion blender to make a finer, smoother mix.

Melt a fair amount of butter, such as 50 gr.

Spread out one phyllo sheet in portrait mode (taller than it is wide). Drizzle butter on it.

From the left edge, fold in one third of the sheet. Then fold in one third from the right. Now you have a narrower sheet of phyllo.

Drizzle the sheet with more melted butter.

Near the bottom edge of the phyllo sheet, put a big spoonful of the beef mixture.

Pick up the lower right corner of the sheet and fold it up to meet the left edge, making a triangle with the beef inside.

Fold that triangle up, aligning its edge with the edge of the phyllo.

Keep folding the triangle up until you reach the end of the phyllo.

Paint the whole thing with more melted butter and set it aside.

Repeat with more phyllo and beef until you run out of ingredients. You should get about 11 triangles.

If you want to freeze them for baking one at a time later, freeze them now. Later, you can pull out a frozen triangle and put it directly in the air fryer (190 C for 25 minutes or so).

If you want to bake one now: air fryer at 190 C for about 18 minutes; conventional oven might be 180 C for 30 minutes..
