I wondered if the plant was sitting partly in acidic soil and partly in alkaline. When one of these hydrangeas (not all change color like this) is moved from one soil type to another, or has some other change in the ph of its environment they usually go a kind of dirty purple color for a year or two, a mixture of the blue and pink rather than showing them both like this.

Whatever the cause, it is a nice effect indeed 😀

Someone else suggested it might be lilacina, and that sounds like what I think the tour guide said. I don't remember hearing any "p" sounds at the time, and from a quick search they don't quite look right.

Lepiota do look like the mushrooms that come up in our garden from time to time, though, so I think you've helped with another identification that I hadn't even asked about 😆

A Mohua (Yellowhead) scans around for insects then jumps from its perch to go on the hunt. They're quite small, and that yellow throat and head can be hard to see in dappled sunlight when they're up high in the trees. Lovely little birds, though.

These are the ones we get in our garden sometimes, they always bring a smile to our faces. The black morph looks more like this (https://www.digitalpix.co.nz/the-black-morph-fantail/). The pics in this link look more like the one in my pic, albeit darker - but in other photos they look quite a lot darker again. It depends on the light, and how the camera adjusts for it etc.

I'm not sure the full range of the black morph fantails, but this photo was taken near Kaikoura, so perhaps that's their stronghold. It would be interesting if a cross between a black morph and a "regular" fantail would lead to something in between, but I don't know the genetics of it at all! 😃

We had some time on beautiful Stewart Island, Rakiura, earlier this week. The Oban harbour at Halfmoon Bay hosts a number of seabirds, including albatrosses, muttonbirds (Shearwaters), and terns.

I managed to get some shots of this albatross (White-capped, I think) as it ran along the water as part of its take-off.

Some more lichen detail from the wooden seat outside the local shop. I think there are examples here of crustose (grey crusty one at the very bottom with raised plateaux), foliose (blue-grey lobed one on the lower right that looks like waves in a storm), leprose (powdery yellow one in the bottom right corner that's growing on something else), and fruticose (grey-green branched one top left) species, all in one shot.

These are growing between two of the slats forming the back of the seat, a shadier and more protected spot than the previous post which was of part of the sitting surface of the seat.

Lichen on a wooden seat just outside our local corner shop. The seat is pretty heavily colonised by lichen, with different species growing on top, between, and behind the slats.

This is a 40 image photo stack, hand held (well, kneeling on the ground and propped against the bench, holding my breath so as to be as wobble-light as possible).

Thanks, you're probably right. It wasn't one that I'd seen growing in this location before, and we'd recently put some new bark chip down so thought it was probably growing from that. It's quite possible it's growing off some dead roots underneath all that, or just present in the soil another one.

Catananche caerulea, probably one of my favourite little plants right now, but you (I) seem to have to get several flowers together to make a photo look like anything. They've got such long stems, and only one flower per stem, so that they're usually a long way apart.

Now that we've got a few plants which have seeded themselves from the original, the flower density is a lot higher and they look really good.

Hmmm, not sure about mozzies. There's a drainage ditch on the other side of our back fence and the mozzies that breed there do come past the lemon verbena on their way in to munch on us. But there are a lot more mozzies that get stuck near a tree before the lemon verbena, so... maybe?

It's deciduous, and the leaves all get hit by the first frost of the year and drop shortly after. It can be a slightly untidy-looking plant but the scent more than makes up for that!

Yeah, it's great - really potent but fades pretty quickly ...
