Poincare in particular was too sophisticated for his own good, correctly arguing that different conceptual frameworks were possible for explaining the phenomena of relativistic time dilation, length contraction, etc., while Einstein strongly argued for *one* framework, in retrospect the best one - and then took advantage of this to revolutionize physics.

      Einstein realized that gravity is due to the curvature of spacetime, but earlier mathematicians had guessed that it&amp;#39;s due to the curvature of space.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;On the 18th of August 1869, the eminent mathematician Sylvester gave a speech arguing that mathematics is not separate from physics.  He later published this speech in the journal Nature, and added a footnote raising the possibility that space is curved:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;“the laws of motion accepted as fact, suffice to prove in a general way that the space we live in&lt;br/&gt;is a flat or level space [...], our existence therein being assimilable to the life of the bookworm in a flat page; but what if the page should be undergoing a process of gradual bending into a curved form?” &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Then, even more dramatically, he announced that the mathematician Clifford had been studying this!&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;“Mr. W. K. Clifford has indulged in more remarkable speculations as the possibility of our being able&lt;br/&gt;to infer, from certain unexplained phenomena of light and magnetism, the fact of our level space&lt;br/&gt;of three dimensions being in the act of undergoing in space of four dimensions (space as&lt;br/&gt;inconceivable to us as our space to the supposititious bookworm) a distortion analogous to the&lt;br/&gt;rumpling of the page.”&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;This started a flame war in Nature which the editor eventually shut off. After doing this 12 times, you reach a note that&amp;#39;s close to 7 octaves higher.  But not exactly, since the 12th power of 3/2 is&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;129.746338 &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;which is a bit more than&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;2⁷ = 128&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The ratio of these two is called the &amp;#39;Pythagorean comma&amp;#39;:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;p = (3/2)^12 / 2⁷ = 3¹² / 2¹⁹ ≈ 1.0136&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;This is like an unavoidable lump in the carpet when you use Pythagorean tuning.   &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;It&amp;#39;s good to stick the lump in your carpet under your couch.   And it&amp;#39;s good to stick the Pythagorean comma in the so-called &amp;#39;tritone&amp;#39; - a very dissonant note that you&amp;#39;d tend to avoid in medieval music.   This note is ♭5, which is the same as ♯4.    It&amp;#39;s halfway around the circle of notes and it&amp;#39;s also halfway around the circle of fifths.  In equal temperament its frequency is √2 times that of your starting note.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;In equal temperament, you get the tritone by going either 6 steps up the circle of fifths or 6 steps down.   In Pythagorean tuning, going 6 steps up the circle of fifths doesn&amp;#39;t give you the same note as going 6 steps down!   We call one of them ♭5 and the other ♯4. Here are some presents in return.... &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Yesterday I talked about 12-tone equal temperament: the tuning system where we chop the octave into 12 equal parts.   &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;This has been the most popular tuning system since maybe 1810, or definitely by 1850.  But it&amp;#39;s mathematically the most boring of the tuning systems that have dominated Western music since the Middle Ages.  Now let&amp;#39;s go back much earlier, to Pythagorean tuning.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;When you chop the octave into 12 equal parts, the frequency ratios of all your notes are irrational numbers... *except* when you go up or down some number of octaves.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The Pythagoreans disliked irrational numbers.   People even say they drowned Hippasus at sea after he proved that the square root of 2 is irrational!  That&amp;#39;s just a myth, but it illustrates how people connected Pythagoras to a love of rational numbers.   In Pythagorean tuning, people wanted a lot of frequency ratios of 3/2.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;In equal temperament, where we chop the octave into 12 equal parts, when we start at any note and go up 7 of these parts (a so-called &amp;#34;fifth&amp;#34;), we reach a note that vibrates about 1.4981 times as fast.  That&amp;#39;s close enough to 3/2 for most ears.  But it&amp;#39;s not the Pythagorean ideal!&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;As we&amp;#39;ll see, seeking the Pythagorean ideal causes trouble.       Working a bit with Clifford algebras again.   The Clifford algebra Cl(p,q) is the real algebra freely generated by p square roots of 1 and q square roots of -1, all of which anticommute.     For example Cl(0,1) is the complex numbers, ℂ, because you get that by throwing in a square root of -1.  Cl(0,2) is the quaternions, ℍ, because you get that by throwing in two anticommuting square roots of -1.   (Their product gives a third one.)   &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Clifford algebras obey a bunch of cool relations, but not all were listed on Wikipedia or the nLab until today... when I put them on.   Here are the most important:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Cl(q&#43;2,p) ≅ Cl(p,q) ⊗ Cl(2,0)&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Cl(q,p&#43;2) ≅ Cl(p,q) ⊗ Cl(0,2)&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Cl(p&#43;1,q&#43;1) ≅ Cl(p,q) ⊗ Cl(1,1)&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Cl(1,1) and Cl(2,0) are both isomorphic to the algebra of 2×2 real matrices, so the last isomorphism says we can get Cl(p&#43;1,q&#43;1) by taking 2×2 matrices with entries in Cl(p,q) - super-useful, and this was on Wikipedia and the nLab.   &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;But the other two isomorphisms deserve their place in the sun too!&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;a href=&#34;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_Clifford_algebras#Symmetries&#34;&gt;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_Clifford_algebras#Symmetries&lt;/a&gt;

I&amp;#39;m wondering why the space between 10000 and 01000 is so much bigger than the other spaces in that row - that&amp;#39;s the main thing I&amp;#39;d want to change, along with the symmetrically large space between 01111 and 10111.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I imagine some TikZ expert could figure out the intelligent way to change the labels.  I might do it a dumb way myself.

      A white hole is a purely hypothetical time-reversed black hole.  What does general relativity say about them?  Would they repel you?  Could you fall into a white hole - or only fall out? At first I didn&amp;#39;t believe everything he said about white holes, but eventually I realized he was right!    They&amp;#39;re purely hypothetical solutions of the equations of general relativity, but you can work out what that theory predicts about them - that&amp;#39;s the game here, and that determines what&amp;#39;s &amp;#34;right&amp;#34;.       The little red dots in the early universe could be &amp;#39;quasi-stars&amp;#39;.   &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Calculations show such a star could form when a gas cloud that&amp;#39;s heavier than 1,000 times the Sun&amp;#39;s mass collapses and forms a black hole.   Its outer layers would be big enough to absorb the resulting supernova without being blown apart.   Then you&amp;#39;d have a star powered by gravity, with a black hole in the middle.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Such a star could be as luminous as a small present-day galaxy!   And that&amp;#39;s what little red dots are like.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;As a quasi-star ages, it cools down and eventually the gas on the outside would dissipate, leaving behind a black hole.  Such &amp;#39;intermediate-mass black holes&amp;#39; could be the ancestors of the supermassive black holes we now see in the middles of most galaxies.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Pro tip: &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Don&amp;#39;t embarrass yourself by mixing up a quasi-star with a Thorne–Żytkow object!  That&amp;#39;s when a small black hole falls into an ordinary large star.       I&amp;#39;m preparing a talk called Visions for the Future of Physics, so I&amp;#39;m bumping into various cool things I hadn&amp;#39;t known about.   This one comes from chemistry: the Stone-Wales transformation! &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Buckminsterfullerene is a molecule shaped like a soccer ball, made of 60 carbon atoms.   If one of the bonds between two hexagons rotates, we get a weird mutant version of this molecule.  This is an example of a Stone-Wales transformation.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;But the same sort of transformation can happen in graphene, which is a flat sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal tiling of the plane.   I&amp;#39;ll show you how it works.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;(The image here created by L. A. At least EurekAlert! didn&amp;#39;t get into his views on God.

In Florida, 21% of Black voting-age citizens are not allowed to vote.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;In Scotland, I believe everyone over 16 who is a lawful resident gets to vote in Scottish parliament and council elections.    That includes noncitizens like me.   &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;(This does not apply to UK parliament elections.   And I get the feeling that British politicians are more interested than Scottish ones in reducing the number of voters.   But I&amp;#39;m new here.)&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;In Scotland, do they carefully check that you&amp;#39;re a &amp;#34;lawful&amp;#34; resident before you can vote?   Maybe not - look at the sentence in marked in red.    They certainly didn&amp;#39;t ask my wife who she was when she needed to go to the hospital for emergency care! Instead I would have referred to Pierre Cartier&amp;#39;s paper on the &amp;#34;cosmic Galois group&amp;#34;, in which he writes:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&amp;#34;From the physics point of view, the work of Connes and Kreimer about renormalization in quantum field theory has been deepened. The so-called “forest formula” of Zimmermann was translated into the language of Hopf algebras by Kreimer, and Connes introduced the efficient tool of Birkhoff factorization. Inspired by the theory of algebraic groups, I reformulated everything in terms of exponential of triangular matrices. Together with my student Marcus Berg, we made it a practical tool for calculation of counter-terms in renormalized field theories. At a deeper level, I was more prophetic than I had thought, and there are many reasons to believe in a “cosmic Galois group” acting on the fundamental constants of the physical theories. There&amp;#39;s a lot more friction in experimental work.  So many things break when you&amp;#39;re trying to do experiments, or don&amp;#39;t work quite as well as you hoped, or cost too much for you to afford.

Until fairly recently few in the US expected it to be taken over by an authoritarian leader, as has happened to so many Latin American countries with US help.  So there is not much preparedness.   This thread here started because I&amp;#39;m trying to give talks to help people at the Topos Institute understand what&amp;#39;s going on - I expect there may be still a lot of denial, i.e. underestimating how serious this is.

      There are 30 different ways to put the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 on the faces of an ordinary 6-sided die, one number on each face, if you count two rotated dice as the same.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Why?  Well, there are 6! = 720 ways to put numbers on the faces, but there are 24 ways to rotate a cube, and 720/24 = 30.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;So make 30 dice, one of each kind.  Now here&amp;#39;s where things get spooky.  You can put them in a 6 × 6 square array with no dice on the diagonal, since 6 × 6 - 6 = 30.  But what&amp;#39;s *really* spooky is this. That gives 32 elements.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I gave a talk about this today and someone instantly pointed out that the McGee group is the smallest group G with an outer automorphism f: G → G that maps each element of G to an element in the same conjugacy class!   So for each g∈G we have &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;f(g) = hgh⁻¹ &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;for some h∈G, but we can&amp;#39;t use the same h for all g! After confusing information from Amtrak and other sources I got GREAT information by calling the Santa Barbara downtown parking office:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;a href=&#34;https://santabarbaraca.gov/government/departments/public-works/public-works-downtown-team/downtown-plaza-and-parking/downtown-parking-lots&#34;&gt;https://santabarbaraca.gov/government/departments/public-works/public-works-downtown-team/downtown-plaza-and-parking/downtown-parking-lots&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;They have long-term parking and it&amp;#39;s hardly ever full.  If it&amp;#39;s full I can park in the short-term parking lot at no extra charge if I tell the attendant.  If the whole lot is full I can park in the nearby lot 12 or any other city lot.  That covers even the most paranoid scenarios.  I just need to validate my parking ticket at the station!&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I leave the car there, and then:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;• take a train from Santa Barbara leaving at 12:21 and arriving in Emeryville at 9:31 pm&lt;br/&gt;• Brendan Fong will drive me to my hotel&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Then I&amp;#39;ll spend a week in Berkeley talking to category theorists and maybe other mathematicians and random fun folks!

      This is the color of infinite hotness.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;This is the color something gets in the limit where its temperature approaches infinity.  Of course you’d instantly be fried by gamma rays of arbitrarily high frequency, but this would be its spectrum in the visible range.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;This is also the color of a typical neutron star. Often they needed to multiply large numbers! That was tiring... but around 1580, they figured out a clever way to approximately multiply large numbers using tables of trig functions.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Here&amp;#39;s an example:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Say you want to multiply 105 and 720. You do this:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;• Shift the decimal point in each one to get numbers less than 1. You get 0.105 and 0.720.&lt;br/&gt; • Look up angles whose cosines are these numbers. Use a table! The cosine of 84° is about 0.105, and the cosine of 44° is about 0.720&lt;br/&gt; • Add and subtract these angles: 84° &#43; 44° = 128° and 84° - 44° = 40°.&lt;br/&gt;• Use a table to look up the cosines of these new angles: -0.616 and 0.766.&lt;br/&gt;• Take their average, which is 0.075.&lt;br/&gt;• Scale it back up. At the beginning of this game you took 105 and 720 and shifted the decimal point 3 places to the left in each. So now, shift the decimal point 3&#43;3 = 6 places to the right! Some people go all the way up to Seattle!  The bad part: it starts brutally early.  The really bad part: there&amp;#39;s only 30 minutes to make the connection in LA, I&amp;#39;ve never done it before, and there&amp;#39;s not another train that day.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Another plan: I need to visit my aunt near Santa Barbara.  I can drive there in 3.5 hours, spend a a few days there, then drive to the train station.  I hear they have long-term parking.   I leave the car there, then:&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;take a train from Santa Barbara leaving at 12:21 and arriving in Oakland at 9:06 pm&lt;br/&gt;walk from the train station to a bus station in 10 minutes&lt;br/&gt;take a bus leaving 9:27 pm and arriving in Berkeley at 10:03 pm.&lt;br/&gt;walk to a hotel&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;So, the same thing but starting later and avoiding the tight connection!   A lot of driving, and if there&amp;#39;s no long-term parking available the plan collapses.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Any good ideas?       Mathematicians number our theorems because... well, we can buy numbers for cheap from the wholesaler, so we have a lot of them lying around, and we use them for everything.   But it&amp;#39;s very rare for the number of a theorem to become famous.  The only exception that leaps to my mind is Hilbert&amp;#39;s Theorem 90.   Do you know any others?&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;If you ask a number theorist about Hilbert&amp;#39;s Theorem 87, they&amp;#39;ll look at you like you&amp;#39;re nuts.   But if you ask about Theorem 90 they&amp;#39;ll know it, or at least be embarrassed for forgetting the exact statement.  Try it!&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;It was the the 90th theorem in Hilbert&amp;#39;s paper &amp;#34;Theory of algebraic number fields&amp;#34;, and for some reason it became more famous than most.   So what does it say?&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Here&amp;#39;s an easy special case.  The real numbers ℝ sit inside the complex numbers ℂ, and the complex numbers have exactly two symmetries that leave every real number unchanged.   Complex conjugation is the interesting one, and the other is the identity.   If we take a complex number z, apply each of these symmetries, and multiply the results, we get&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;zz*&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Hilbert&amp;#39;s Theorem 90 says that if zz* = 1, then z = a*/a for some nonzero complex number a.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;But his theorem is a lot more general!   It applies whenever you&amp;#39;ve got a field F sitting in a larger field K, and the symmetries of K that leave all elements of F unchanged form a finite group generated by some symmetry σ.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Here&amp;#39;s what it says.   Take an element z of K, apply all these symmetries to it, and multiply the results.  If you get 1, then we must have z = σ(a)/a for some nonzero a in F.  &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;But what&amp;#39;s really going on here???&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;(1/2)
