This was not on my Mars Bingo Card.

Curiosity rover lifts the rock that is stuck to its drill, gives it a shake which liberated some loose material, but fails to dislodge the errant rock on Sol 4881 (April 30, 2026). The team has an option to eject the drill bit assembly and use one of its spare drill bits, but I assume that will be the last resort. Meanwhile in Gale Crater.

In this animated GIF we can see dust cascading from the rock that appears to have been lifted by Curiosity's drill bit. The timestamps show the 9 HazCam images were acquired over 15 minutes on Sol 4879 (April 28, 2026). I'm assuming the dust was liberated by the operation of one of the voice coils in the drill. This attempt to free the drill bit does not appear to have been successful.

#Curiosity #MSL #MarsRover #NASA #Science #Space #Exploration #Solarocks #Mars

A small selection of overlapping MAHLI images from sol 4750 (December 17, 2025) assembled in MS-ICE of an interesting feature in Curiosity rover's current workspace.

Additional focus stacked images are likely still on the rover, but I think these few cover the most interesting part of the target.

#Curiosity #MSL #MarsRover #NASA #Science #Space #Exploration #Solarocks #Mars #MAHLI #Sol4750

Mars Guy - Ep. 176 (YouTube)

Why did Perseverance unload on this strange feature?

A notably red slab of rock with some even more notable features has been the target of intense investigation for the past two weeks. Now Perseverance has dug into it with its abrading tool and opened up a deeper level of intrigue.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOqWSP2HonY

#Mars #Perseverance #youtube
#solarocks #rover

Some interesting boulders imaged by Curiosity rover on sol 4267 with its R-MastCam (de-Bayered mosaics). Could these be rough conglomerates that were laid down as debris flows?

Like 65dBnoise (npub1z0j…ddwy) IANAG) :)

#Solarocks #Space #Mars #Rover #Curiosity #geology #MSL

As we close in on Curiosity Rover's 'Landiversary' I feel it is a good time to share one of my favourite images from its mission on Mars. This mid-afternoon mast camera (R-MastCam) image features a distant section of the inner rim wall of Gale earlier during mission, this was back on sol 1309, April 16, 2016.
