I think Twitter, Snapchat, Vine, and Tiktok have proven beyond a doubt that a lot of people prefer short-form content.

I think a large part of Bluesky's user base is there because of the content limits, not in spite of them.

Mastodon doesn't know to send replies to the community for distribution to the rest of the threadiverse.

Long story short if you're not on the same instance as the community, Mastodon replies to you won't make it to the rest of the threadiverse.

I experimented with a hack to see if I could fix this. NodeBB works around this by including a hidden mention to the community that Mastodon will then pre-fill in the text box, and then the reply will make it in successfully. If you have a Mastodon account try to reply to this comment, the community will be pre-filled as a mention.

Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin will need to do this.

Does it work? **Yes**

Are we supposed do it? **Technically no**, it's easier to blame Mastodon for not doing it right.

Should we do it? **Probably, yes.**

I am disappointed but not at all surprised that a couple respondents develop on ATProto because of hazing and perceived unwelcome atmosphere on the fediverse in general.

Those kinds of people (the ones who gatekeep and haze) are why we can't have nice things.

Instead of an environment where I can build and feel comfort in the protocol's technical merit, I am instead frustrated by another protocol's success. Juvenile, I know.

Back in the day I remember when you registered for a hotmail account you could choose between several domains... it was entirely for vanity, but this is similar.

It's the idea of having your cake and eating it too.

Lots of people will get very up in arms about privacy aspects of the fediverse that simply do not exist; they only think they do.

Those people wish to have the wide reach of an open decentralized social network, but at the same time only want sympathetic responses and for opposing viewpoints to not exist. Those two concepts are at odds with each other.

We hadn't come up with any path forward yet, but the FEP notes some properties that we could use.

* An `url` array to show cross-posts?

It wasn't readily known how this collection is updated and federated (not without code achaeology), but [claire@social.sitedethib.com](https://activitypub.space/user/claire%40social.sitedethib.com) recently shared some additional info :smiley:

* The actor itself will issue an `Add` activity targeting the collection with the status in `object`.
* This activity is sent to all followers of the actor.
* No activity is sent if the actor has no **remote** followers.
* A `Remove` is sent when a pinned post is unpinned.

It might be that it is a bug that lies on the WordPress side or the Mastodon side. This might be something [pfefferle@mastodon.social](https://activitypub.space/user/pfefferle%40mastodon.social) would be best to answer.

I will say this, though... that Mastodon has had a history of not supporting long-form text _well_. You can even get a feel of that now; inline images are missing even though the full text is available. This is by design because Mastodon is a **micro-blog**, and they have made some intentional UI decisions whose tradeoff is that full HTML display with inline images and such would ruin the effect.

We could debate endlessly about whether this is a net positive or not, but that's beside the point.

What I want to say is that we're in a sort of inflection point with regard to long-form text where Mastodon is taking small but meaningful steps toward better supporting long-form text. Part of that is allowing for Articles and summaries, and encouraging users to view the article on the WordPress site itself.

Remember that not even a year ago, Mastodon didn't even render summaries (or showed them as content warnings, or didn't accept HTML...)

Personally I think 1b12 doesn't need to be changed or hacked ...

Personally I think 1b12 doesn't need to be changed or hacked around. It doesn't specifically call for federating out deletes so I'd think any solution we come up with together would work *with* that FEP, not go against it.

Technically you're not **deleting** the content, just removing it from the community.
