This is why I hate the "diaspora" Iranians cheering on the war of aggression against their own country. Obviously they either don't consider the effect the war will have on innocent children, or they know but are sociopaths who don't care. Is this suffering really a worthwhile exchange for killing the Ayatollah? And if you care so damn much about regime change, would you offer your own children as a sacrifice? These kids and their families didn't have a choice in that sacrifice. If they had been given a choice, I have no doubt they would have refused the regime change in order to keep their children alive, I am sure.

#politics #EndTheWar #NoWar #Israel #USA #Iran #EpsteinWars #OperationEpsteinFury #EpicFury

quoting
note198y…e39d

10-year-old Iranian child in Minab recounts the strike that killed her 11-year-old brother and their teacher mother.

My father used to always come and pick me up from school during the last bells. He was outside too.

When he heard that sound, he said he wanted to go and save my mother. He went up and then another blast happened, and he was martyred too.

We were in school when a sound like a strong wind was heard. All the teachers screamed and ran away.

I was scared too and followed my teacher into a classroom, and after that, I became unconscious.

A big piece of rock had fallen on my back. When I regained consciousness, a man came to lift it, but he couldn't. Several people came and couldn't do it either.

They lifted a corner of it a bit, and I came out myself.

I miss them so much. I'm glad they are martyred and I want to follow in their footsteps. May God punish America and Israel.

      ### #Schemacs update
----
I have been banging my head against #Gtk3 for the past 3 weeks and all progress has pretty much come to a stand-still. No matter how simple and straight-forward my GUI is, Gtk makes it simply impossible to get the layout correct. I am now convinced that programming my own layout algorithm from scratch and using the `GtkLayout` container (which let you place widgets at arbitrary X,Y coordinates) is the only way to proceed at this point. It is soooo frustrating.

The #Gtk documentation is *good,* but **not** at all good enough. The people on the [Gnome Discourse](https://discourse.gnome.org/t/cant-get-gtkscrolledwindow-to-use-all-available-space-seems-to-ignore-vexpand-and-valign/33606) have been very kind and helpful, and I truly appreciate the engagement I have had there, but ultimately I am still not able to solve my problems.

I have decided I need find some way to keep making progress without postponing the release of the work I done so far for an indeterminate length of time. So rather than work-out all the bugs in this version before merging it to the main Git branch, what I will do instead is have the `main` program launch a debugger window. The debugger window will have all layout calculated in advance, and all widgets will be declared once and only once throughout the lifetime of the application to avoid the reference counting issues. Obviously the debugger GUI will be very rigid, but you will at least be able to edit files and run commands in a REPL within this debugger.

Then maybe I can merge the code I have written to the `main` Git branch, and people will at least be able to use it through the debugger. Maybe also I could use this debugger to help with writing my layout algorithm. Also, I need to get back to the Emacs Lisp interpreter, I haven't worked on it in almost two months now.

#tech #software #Lisp #Emacs #EmacsLisp #Scheme #SchemeLang #R7RS

      ## Its the little details in *Linux Mint* that make it the best distro
----

My father-in-law has an 8 year old laptop that is still in perfectly good working condition, and was not happy about Microsoft forcing him to buy a new one due to the #EndOf10 , and he remembered I had mentioned to him #Linux so he asked me to install it for him. (Yay!) So I BitTorrented the latest ISO image and stuck-in an old USB stick.

In the Cinnamon desktop environment, all you need to do is right-clicked on the ISO image and right there in the context menu there were two options, "Verify", and "Make bootable USB stick". It is just right there in the file browser, in the right-click context menu.

Selecting ["Verify" runs the GUI application `mint-iso-verify`](https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/verify.html#verify-using-linux-mint) and tells you with a green checkmark or red cross whether your ISO image is official. Selecting "[Make bootable USB stick](https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/burn.html#in-linux-mint)" runs an applet built-in to the "Nemo" file browser (Cinnamon's file browser, forked from Gnome File Browser), which finds attached USB media, prompts you for an admin password, and writes the image.

This does not work on Cinnamon DE running in stock Debian, it is specific to Linux Mint. Other Linux desktops may provide a similar feature, but I am not personally aware of any. Little details like this really make the Linux Mint user experience so much nicer and easier to use, and that is why it is my go-to recommendation for people switching from Windows.

#tech #software #Linux #FOSS #FLOSS #LinuxMint #CinnamonDE #EndOf10 #EndOfTen #SwitchToLinux

I can tolerate the choice made by Scheme: `#f` is false, absolutely everything else, including 0, "", and `'()` is true.

      ## the #Fediverse is booming

I joined my first Mastodon instance in the fall of 2022 and I have been having so much fun with it ever since. Since #Reddit did their IPO and started selling my personal data to AI companies without my permission or consent, I have stopped using all corporate-owned social media. But to be honest, Reddit had such an immense community of diverse people that Mastodon has never been quite as interesting as Reddit... **until now.**

Thanks to the Unite States' biggest tech company CEOs publicly supporting Donald #Trump, people have finally started taking serious the threat that is corporate owned social media. #ActivityPub services like #Mastodon, #Frendica, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Lemmy, #PixelFed, and #PeerTube are experiencing another major surge in the number of users as people abandon #Facebook and even more people abandon Twitter. The same thing happened in 2022 when Elon Musk bought #Twitter.

I follow close to 700 people and almost 200 hashtags now and this has kept my feed interesting enough for me to enjoy logging on to the Fediverse every day. But since Trump's second inauguration, my feed has started overflowing with new posts --- the new posts are coming in literally non-stop now.

In 2022, I feel like Mastodon hit a critical mass where it became interesting and fun to use. In 2025 now, we hit another point of critical mass of users where it has actually become better in quality than corporate-owned services such as Reddit. More importantly, I think people are starting to realize that they can't trust corporate ownership of any public service, the re-election of Trump has shocked people out of complacency. So this is tiny bit a of good news in the otherwise dense fog of horrifying current events.

#Fediverse #Internet

      # Facebook and Twitter censor Linux-related content

According to [the DistroWatch newsletter](https://distrowatch.com/weekly-mobile.php?issue=20250127#sitenews) they have received multiple reports of Facebook users having their accounts suspended for talking about Linux.

I predict that this is just the beginning of a US government crack-down on people who want to break away from the corporate-controlled propaganda, and the surveillance technology built-in to Apple, Microsoft, Google (Alphabet), Facebook (Meta), and Amazon products, or who want to run their own federated web services. It is only a matter of time before ActivityPub is classified as "terrorism." TikTok was only the beginning.

(begin quote of DistroWatch news:)

----

> Starting on 2025-01-19 Sun Facebook's internal policy makers decided that Linux is malware and labelled groups associated with Linux as being "cybersecurity threats". Any posts mentioning DistroWatch and multiple groups associated with Linux and Linux discussions have either been shut down or had many of their posts removed.
>
> We've been hearing all week from readers who say they can no longer post about Linux on Facebook or share links to DistroWatch. Some people have reported their accounts have been locked or limited for posting about Linux.
>
> The sad irony here is that Facebook runs much of its infrastructure on Linux and often posts job ads looking for Linux developers.
>
> Unfortunately, there isn't anything we can do about this, apart from advising people to get their Linux-related information from sources other than Facebook. I've tried to appeal the ban and was told the next day that Linux-related material is staying on the cybersecurity filter. My Facebook account was also locked for my efforts.
>
> We went through a similar experience when Twitter changed its name to X - suddenly accounts which had been re-posting news from our RSS feeds were no longer able to share links. This sort of censorship is an unpleasant side-effect of centralized communication platforms such as X, Facebook, Google+, and so on.
>
> In an effort to continue to make it possible for people to talk about Linux (and DistroWatch), as well as share their views and links, we are providing two options. We have RSS news feeds which get updates whenever we post new announcements, stories, and our weekly newsletters. We also now have a Mastodon account where I will start to post updates - at least for new distributions and notice of our weekly newsletter. Over time we may also add news stories and updates about releases. Links for the feeds and the Mastodon account can be found on our contact page.

#Tech #Politics #Censorship #FreeSpeech #Linux #Fediverse #TikTok #FLOSS #FOSS #FreeSoftware #Twitter #Apple #Microsoft #Google #AlphabetCorp #Facebook #MetaCorp #AmazonCorp

They can buy that data anywhere, but TikTok as a psychology lab masquerading as a highly addictive entertainment platform is another thing.

Sheldon (npub1h57…tx00) this isn't a problem specific to TikTok though, it is a problem with all corporate owned social media (which in the US, "corporate owned" may as well just be "state owned" at this point), like Facebook and Twitter. The difference is that TikTok propaganda may be directed against different people, Taiwan as opposed to Palestine, for example.

And the fact that Nicholas Kristof only points out the harm from Chinese propaganda but not US propaganda, or even honestly discussing the larger problem of "no one should be subject to propaganda," just goes to show how dishonest Kristof is about his phony concern over this issue.

Roberto von Archimboldi (npub1zjt…6a2t) Col (npub13cf…nrp5)

It wasn't enough. But I also lost other relationships entirely, good friends that built every social event on Facebook and didn't bother reaching out separately.

Perrin42 (npub1rez…7cw0) What is nice about social media is that it gives you more opportunities for interaction with people who you might otherwise not think to contact more regularly via other channels. But it isn't absolutely necessary, really. If you have good relationships with people, you will probably naturally want to continue those relationships even without social media.

When "Google Plus" went down 12 years ago, I just told everyone that I was in contact with there regularly that I would be in touch with them over e-mail only from then on. I lost no personal connections that I really cared about, although contact with them was much less frequent than before. I got to be pretty good friends with one guy I met on Google Plus, we stay in touch by email and occasionally video chat nowadays. I tried to get him on Mastodon but he didn't really take to it.

So I really don't buy the whole "I'll lose contact with friends and family" claim.

Ms. Que Banh (npub1zvl…qckq)

Unfortunately, I would guess the majority of Americans still accept that as wisdom.
