Planted up the cherry orchard aka booze orchard , I don’t like cherries raw but I do love cherry liquors and cherries preserved in liquor flavoured syrups ,the tiny cherry plum seedlings forming the hedge will be inter planted with sloes to make sloe gin . I planted 2 Stella cherries , a morello cherry heidelfinger and a cherry plum hedge but I have a golden cherry and gean ready to order and some bird cherries for a hedge , I hope to get another couple of morello cherries on Thursday

I have been trying to get information about the various ruins and this seems to have been used to do something or other , that used the rotating metal device powered by a horse the other side of the wall where the pond now is , I discovered a new term d swingle tree because one was discovered in the ruined wall at one end , there’s a massive chain in the wall ad one end and variouse so far unidentified bits of metal

More photos of the steading one part had some massive incredibly old looking beams , woods always been scarce in Caithness so they could have been recycled from another older building and used to build this one , but they may be a result of the back wall being older and reused they seem to me to not fit the current building size , either it was wider or maybe taller but it’s already quite high . I do wonder if there was a half floor in the roof because the roof windows seem pointless otherwise

Some of my birds , now I have space I will never have to rehome another male bird so I also offered to take peoples unwanted cockerels , cockerels get a bad rep and lots will live together happily if there’s no hens to fight over . I am h just separating small from large cockerels now they are getting adults and housing small ones in their own areas as I have a few bully’s in the bigger birds .

The steading interior originally I planned on living in it but it’s in need of too much work . I was advised to pull down most of it and just leave the back wall , which I absolutely won’t do , in it’s at least 200 years old and a drystone construction. One end was reroofed ages ago with asbestos but it is in good erepair and now water and wind proof as somebody screwed old doors over the barn entrance for me , I opened up the original house door to use and will do what repairs I can myself

I am going to try again here , my daughter got a small inheritance off her grandad enough for a house deposit ,we bought a place with a bungalow for her with an old run down steading (small low barn) and one and a half acres of land. I was given about half an acre plus the steading and it’s front and an area with raised beds at the front. I have a small towing caravan that will go up near by birds and the garage as a winter place . I now keep a flock of unwanted /rescue cockerels and my birds

Anyone in the path of this current storm,, its justifes far more than a yellow wind warning ,I have nt tried going out since I locked the birds in but a friend with livestock had to go ut and couldn't stand up during the gusts and the rains been so heavy it was like looking out of a car window in a car wash ,we had to move three branchs out of the road into the village,I would batten down the hatches (and wheelie bins:) ) and bug in for the rest of the weekend :)

I normally agree with Richard Murphy but in this case hes wrong.A lot of farmers own land worth a lot of money but have very low incomes,often it was bought by parents or grandparents or even great grandparents when land was cheap.Farms are passed across generations ,which is good for responsible land management and good for community cohesion,the tax attacks that .(and many farmer are not married)

Why the council decided spending money on a garden officer was a good idea I do not know ,people store creels ,boats , and trailors and have polytunnels and cold frames and chicken coops because its a rural area .But on the other hand we mostly fix minor stuff ourselves and put up with lack of major repairs. Or we used to ,my list of repairs is going into the council this week and includes a new porch roof and wall as thr current one has holes and a land drain to sto[p the porch flooding

Hi yes it was kilting wool so it didnt need hemming .it was the last part of a roll the local vintage shop had .I bought some Royal stuart as well so I could make a tiered dress.Theres a lot of layers on .A shift/chemise ,bloomers petticoat corset ,corset cover ,hoop skirt ,,probably I have on a little tie on "cushion" to tilt the hoop backwards a bit ,over that theres probably just a tulle /net petticoat because it needed need accuracy for the filming ,the cloaks pure wool vintage

I have no idea why I am not ill yet ,We assume its b ecause she caught it earlier when she collected her car from the garage as thats the only time we have been out separately.Shes felt very unwell for a few days and stayed in ,but didnt get a cough so we didnt initially think of Covid I assumed it was flu ,butI was suspicous so she tested and did two tests both were positive ,shes nothing like as ill as she was with swine flu.Now waiting to see if I develope any symptoms ,

#COVID19 #Covid #Scotland My daughter has covid 19 ,we live nr Lairg but dont socialise so we probably havent infected anyone else,we are both self quarantining.I dont have symptoms so far and luckily Becky is fully vaccinated ,I couldnt have the vaccines because after my first jab I got neurological issues and had to go to A and E for tests ,scan etc .So we are keeping to separate parts of the house, opening windows ,masking up inside and outside,I suppose we did well to manage 4 years :(

I agree I think I read its been many decades since London got sub zero winter temperatures over a decade since London got proper snow that hung around more than a day or two.So its has no concept of what a genuine winter is .The weather policies and heating etc allowances ought to be devolved to local authorities ,not just in the devolved nations but across the UK because the north of England gets winters worse than some parts of Scotland so using any central govt is useless

Our visiting swallows have left,our resident ones left a couple of weeks back,but we always get some temporary ones who must stop off on their journey south .And new robins have arrived this week ,Winters definitely on its way ,hurray :) ,though my two autumn broodys hatch their chicks this coming week so I foresee weeks of of kitchen dwelling chicks while we get chased around by their mums unless we get a faux summer

Hi thank you ,thats are really helpful and enlightening .I am hugely concerned about the US elections and I think much of Europe and Scandinavia are ,most countries have made war plans including conscription ,rationing and potential air raid shelters etc.Many have issued information for citizens telling them to essentially prep ,keep in supplies of food ,torches ,water ,first aid stuff etc.The UKs war plan is 50 years old and hasnt been updated.The govts busy making itself rich

I really hope the US votes in Harris as Trump has the potential to not only destroy democracy in the US and cause misery there,but to also to set back any chance to make a significant difference to climate change if the US withdraws from agreements etc. While also managing to trigger WW3 as hes assured Putin he isnt interested in what he might do anywhere as long as he leaves the US alone.Once Nato is weakend by US lack of support or complete withdrawal theres nothing to stop Putin

I dont think its widely understood that parts of Scotland get well into sub zero temperatures frequently and winter starts earlier and lasts longer (,same goes for parts of Wales and Northern England though neither get the same very low temperatures as consistently as Scotland )

we have now reached the stage here in the north ,where we have to put up signs asking people bag excrement and bin it ,,,AND not dog excrement ,but human excrement .Struie is a famous spot ,but this is happening everywhere ,every road however remote has at least one spot thats been used as a toilet :(

Pretty sure if this was a village in the south of England it wouldnt be in any danger of getting "decommissioned "
But theres plenty of places along the UK coast likely to be in a similar situation in the not too distant future ( .And I do wonder about the fate of the railway line from Wick to Inverness as a few stretches of that run almost level with the coast so theres most likely other railways around the UK also likely to be in trouble

Yes exactly ,the black rocks with vent gleet that I bought to rescue them were in a run barely 3ft across and a few feet long with a cockeral and at least one and I think it was two or more hens just mud floor .So I am sure part of the problem was stress plus being over mated by the cockeral ,one might have been feather picked on her rump so I am hoping her feathers will grow back now

I am feeling glum today ,I think I should have done better the past few weeks but I am not sure how ,so my favourite way of dealing with bad stuff by learning a life lesson and moving on ,wont work as the only lesson seems to be never trust friends .I have two broodies sitting so I am looking forward to their chicks,ones a new bird from the last plac and I am taking it as a sign all my birds even the new ones here have settled in and are happy which is cheering

I had saved up for the birds I got at her place for 18 months or so and the ones I rehomed here I gave away free as mini flocks to rehome the cockerals or I gave away all the remainng ones I couldnt keep to someone I knew had acres of land and loved birds so I took a huge financial hit and I am not really sure I could have done anything differently for the ones I had to leave and I am only really staying on contact with the people until I get my chicks,possibly the turkey back

So thats how the dream ended :( .I am happy here again though I can let my birds wander around in the garden ,feed them as much as I want and I am not being supervised all the time .I lost most of my hand reared chicks I had been looking after before the move because I ran out of chick crumb shortly after I moved to the caravan and she insisted they would be fine on layers pellets and she fed her own growers that ,but of course they werent ,I bought chick crumb online later

I sacrificed those to cover the £200 for the birds being brought back as I couldnt think of anyway to transport ducks ad peacocks at a couple of hours notice .The other birds were all breeding pairs or trios so the cockerals would be impossible to have kept here anyway and they were all used to being in the tiny cage pens she has birds in and I know shes planning to sell those asap so I dont feel too bad leaving them as they will be rehomed soon anyway,but its sad still :(

back to having just a house garden in the hamlet so I had to make some tough choices especially with such short notice and limited space in the truck and trailor.I had almost nothing at my old place ,no bed,table ,chair, bed ,bedding,clothing ,crockery ,kitchen stuff ,so I had to bring a table and chair and my bedding back ,but I felt bad about prioritising those over the remaining birds .I am not sure I could have done anything any better give such short time but I feel bad :(

I feel absolutly awful I had to leave any behind ,but she took one purebred auracuna as payment to look after the others and I was just out of cash and the broody was one of those that kept getting into neighbours gardens when she was here before the move so I couldnt have brought her with me anyway or another hen that was the same and had a narrow escape with a dog,so I figured they were better off there anyway .I was going from having half an acre when I had bought the new birds

I had to pay them to transport me and everything. .Later when I contacted her to refund my advance rent and money I had paid for birds I was clearly never going to get ,she had a hissy fit and told me to collect the peacocks ,the broodies and all the ducks (or all the ones she knew werent worth money) we couldnt collect them so I gave her £200 to transport them ,the 8 ducks arrived in a 3ft sq hutch,the peacoks I found a home for and went straight there but apparently got injured

My tiny old sebright was in with at least twenty others some big birds ,the broodys I had made sure where just closed up in their hutches and seen them put into the car .So they were ok so where my chicks I was looking after .But the rest had been put in a trailor .I had been very clear my possesions not the birds were to go in the trailor ,but I had also got some hutches and a table which were in it so I didnt notice the birds in the crates .Luckily they all survived

I also left muscoverys and some other ducks as I had nowhere for them and the peacocks temporarily while I looked for a home (the other arguments we had were about me not being alllowed to let them out to free range ) She helped me catch my birds and they were put in puppy crates bar the small bantams who I was fine with going in the crates because they were small enough for there to be loads of room for them .But when I got back here she had crammed all the birds into two crates

I brought back all my orginal cockerals and all the ones from her that I knew would roost together with mine without fighting ,but I had to leave 4 I got from her behind .I took the sick black rock hens because I knew they wouldnt get treatment otherwise and the lame hen and a couple of broodys with chicks that I knew wouldnt abandon them .I had to leave two that were sitting and one with chicks I knew would abandon them otherwise(some of those chicks are coming back to me soon)

I said I would have to leave over winter but would come back (by which time I was hoping the house would be done and I would have control over my birds again ) But they vascially threw me out that same day ,I had over 100 birds some I couldnt bring back to the house because they would fly over the fence and annoy neighbours or get attacked by dogs.So I had to leave some I had bought from her and 3 of my older hens behind I have offered her £50 to buy back one but shes refused)

This is how birds are transported by dealers ,which if fine for bantams if they are all the same size as they have headroom ,but Large fowl have to squat and often they are transported like that in trailors (My large birds were all put in metal dog crates by me when I left them but they turned up in these)and it shouldnt be ok to let anything live in a cage it cant walk about in J ust because they arent mammals it doesnt mean they dont deserve better care
