The drop across D2 is going to set the base voltage of Q1 so you want it a little lower than Vbe for Q1 so the transistor is turned on hard. Even with ppc that I was working with, if you have a 64b store, other threads either see it or don’t (if you aren’t crossing a cache line). But if the compiler replaces that with multiple smaller stores, you could have a context switch and then it’s partially visible.
