I recently learned that #Sarawak freaking leads the way for green/renewable energy in Malaysia, if not also the region (Indonesia and Singapore, for example both imports green energy from Sarawak) - today I discovered that their state government even has a (first come, first serve limited) subsidy for solar panel/system installations at home with max of 12k MYR. So for a typical ~20k MYR setup, you only need to pay the remaining 8k MYR with the subsidy.

Istg Sarawak seems to be the only state in Malaysia with great, progressive state policies and initiatives (that people could **actually** feel and see). Is it too late to be reborn as a Sarawakian?

ahh yes Indian Banana Leaf restaurants is a great rec for good vegetarian/vegan food. It’s not uncommon for even ‘vege-focused’ food here to still contain poultry/meat/seafood so as a non-vegetarian it’s hard for me to even think of what’s possible to eat. And yes, the easiest fallback is to locate a Mamak restaurant to have Indian Roti’s like Roti Canai, Naan, Thosai/Dosa, etc. since they’re found just abt anywhere and are often open 24/7.

edit: Indonesian eateries might be another good option too, since they’re not too hard to find and should have dishes like Pecal, Gado-Gado, etc.

TIL 'Watermelon' has a different name in Malay other than 'Tembikai' - 'Semangka'. _Tembikai_ apparently borrows from Tamil, meanwhile _Semangka_, used in Johor, Sarawak, and Singapore, borrows from Jawa/Javanese. Apparently, Malaysians in the east coast also calls Watermelons as 'Timun Cina' (Chinese Cucumber).

I only made this discovery (of the word _Semangka_) only bcos of an ice pop packaging my wife showed me - which uses 'Semangka' as the Malay translation to Watermelon. Never heard of it, ever in my life otherwise :blobfoxangrylaugh:

#Homelab/#Networking question: I just realise that 'setting a static #IPv6 address' on a (#Linux) server is not as simple as it'd be with #IPv4 - one of the reasons being, realising, that the address prefix changes when my router restarts (i.e. due to any configuration changes).

When that network address prefix changes, obviously, any 'static' IPv6 address I'd like to set for my server would just be rendered _invalid_, since the network address portion/prefix is no longer applicable.

On my #TP-Link router, under IPv6 LAN settings, I saw an option to configure the `Address Prefix` - however, this field is currently prefilled with the network address prefix my servers/client devices are currently using/assigned to, and it is immutable (not configurable). To make it configurable, I could set a different setting on the same page called `Prefix Delegation` to `Disable` instead of its default, `Enable`.

My idea is to disable it, set an address prefix, and save/apply it - my expectation is, after the router restarts, all IPv6 addresses on my network will have that prefix, and it'll never change unless I explicitly do so (again, on the router). Is my idea right? or am I getting it tooootally wrong (which is possible bcos IPv6 is something else)?

I've managed to get #OpenMediaVault working on my #RaspberryPi (running #Raspbian Lite) and the performance seems pretty impressive! Despite relying on USB storage for the SSDs.

This is my first time running a #NAS on the Pi, on #OMV, not using #ZFS or #RAID but rather an #Unraid like solution, 'cept, #FOSS called #SnapRAID in combination with #mergerfs (the drives themselves are simply #EXT4).

So far, honestly, so good. I got 2x 1TB SSDs for data, and another 1TB SSD for parity. Don't have a backup for the data themselves atm, but I do have a scheduled backup solution (#RaspiBackup) setup for the OS itself (SD card). It's also got #Timeshift for creating daily snapshots.

I'm not _out of the woods_ yet though, cos after this comes the (somewhat) scary part, deploying #Immich on the Pi lol. I really could just deploy it in my #Proxmox #homelab, and I wouldn't have to worry about system resources or hardware transcoding, etc. but I really wanna experiment this 'everything hosted/contained in 1 Pi' _concept_.

checking again earlier, it just so happens that all of them were mkv with embedded subs. One thing I'm noticing also is that all these files are transcoding instead of direct play (even though on my Plex server, when watching the same media on the Android app and the same phone for instance, would've direct played instead of transcode) - when I use the media player client on macOS however, they are direct playing as expected and it doesn't seem that subtitle desync issue is present.

If you don't mind answering these questions:

1. Is the "criteria" to avoiding the need to transcode different between Plex/Jellyfin? Jellyfin seems to transcode my media better than my Plex server, but on my Plex server I almost never need transcoding on any devices of mine so I've disabled it completely since idt my server is "built" for transcoding.

2. I assume, the web UI/player will always require transcoding and cannot direct play? Are the Android and iOS app facing the same "limitation" perhaps bcos they're not actual "apps" but rather, they're a wrapper of the same web UI?

3. On Plex, there's a setting where I can just completely disable transcoding so that it simply errors out if a media cannot be played directly by a device - seeing that transcoding on Jellyfin causes these subtitle desync issues, is there a way for me to do the same?

Works perfectly for me so it must for you... then you realise immediately after giving it a whirl that something as basic as subtitle support on your media, regardless if transcoding or direct play (why that'd even matter, honestly?) is broken on #Jellyfin.

I'm eager to switch to Jellyfin bcos I always knew it was the platform to be on, not #Plex (since #FOSS and all), but I am perplexed how Jellyfin is supposedly not able to deliver on this seemingly very basic feature for a video streaming platform - support playing subtitles (properly) with your videos 🙃

I just know a lot of the (Malaysian) Malays' fast this year, _hangry_ and racists alike, are broken/invalid, repeatedly. These people love _preaching_ and pretending to be pious when everything they do is, and shows, anything **but**.

My only _husnudzon_ for these folks is that they are smokers like me (and a lot of Malays) going through the absolute worst of withdrawals each day 'cept they're sl/sn-apping at people when they're _hangry_ and be racist online as _entertainment_ to pass the time, while I shut myself tf up during the day and watch Khairul Aming cooking videos in the evening to pass the time.

Ramadan (fasting) is all about straining yourself from any sort of _relief_ (i.e. no eating/drinking, nothing sexual, no physical/verbal temper, no sulking, not even picking your nose lol), nurturing patience and self-control, and putting yourself in the shoes of the needy - yet these people, this year worst than ever, are _willy nilly_ breaking their fasts (as long they don't eat or drink, all is _good_ right?) and having lavish buffets for Iftar like there's no tomorrow, cos sure that's what poor people eat at the end of the day too :))

Again, insane how someone as _non religious_ as me can be more knowledgeable of this than these supposedly religious lot - but then again, it's also not surprising seeing how Islam literally teaches you to be "in the middle" (i.e. balanced between spiritual and worldly matters), and yet these bunch clearly have no regards to this whatsoever, _riding_ on the name of "Islam", and think they're "in the right". My sole "satisfaction" in this is knowing that these fucks are starving for over ~13 hours each day for no gain whatsoever.

Previously, awal Ramadan ady sure got mercun just outside of my local surau during Terawihs - triggering car alarms and whatnot. The fasting month this year really flew by so quickly, which is _good_ I suppose, cos I never particularly liked Ramadan - not for the challenge of fasting and everything that comes with (i.e. no smoking, eating/drinking, or _relief_ of any kind including even cursing, etc. which is a lot harder than you think when you're constantly _hangry_ and sleep deprived) but rather.. how _disruptive_ it is to daily routine, and I'm, for wtv reason, a **very** routine (reliant) person. Even a tiny change to my routine (i.e. say... someone taking up my regular spot in my shoe cabinet) can throw me off balance mentally for the entire day.

That being said, it's not that I'm looking forward to the end of Ramadan either cos then comes Raya, something I hate 2x more lol for the _ridiculous_ clothing you're expected to wear in our insanely hot and humid weather (the thinnest tee and the shortest shorts are my regular uniform), and also the amount of socialising that comes with _festive_ seasons like it. I've always been relatively distant with my family compared to anyone else (in the family), so that only goes ten-folds when you factor in cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. whom I could never even remember their names, or pretend to care/grief when they pass.

This year's Raya will be particularly _interesting_ tho cos it'll be my first real experience going back to a _Kampung_... my wife's. I've only ever spent Rayas in KL, even hanging out w friends at Mamak (from the 1st day of Raya, even) just to skip through Raya as quickly as possible, but this time, I'm going to my wife's hometown in Kedah. Dk what to expect, I only know that there will be a lot of Malays around me (which always gives me anxiety for some reason), I may or may not understand what they'll be saying (depending on how strong their Northern accents will be), I'm also told that Kampung (or Kedah in particular) wouldn't be this "pretty" countryside image I have of anywhere not-KL(ang Valley), and that no, countrysides aren't cooler in temperature than KL, in fact in this case, hotter... SOMEHOW.

I'm a little stressed, ngl, but I'll def do my best to enjoy it as much as my wife will :blobfoxbonk: It's just, straight up _karma_ how I've never been _envious_ of those that have a Kampung to go back to during festive seasons (Raya, CNY, etc.) and then, out of nowhere, I've been _gifted_ one ~6-8 hours away up North :neofox_boop_woozy:

It's hilarious that in Malaysia, back in the day, it's common to see "white beauty" marketing selling and advertising products as "skin-whitening" and so on - these are still sold ofc, but I've not seen them being marketed as such anymore, not "officially" or as "in your face" anyway for a long time now.

Recently tho, I've already seen a few instances of expats (Eastern Asians) living in Malaysia who've started promoting/doing ads for these products with the backwards marketing talk of "dark skin = bad", "fair skin = good". They don't even try to hide it with _fluff_ like "this makes your skin glow" and go straight to "this shit makes your skin white and beautiful" or "fuckkk my skin got dark in Malaysian heat, what do I do" lmao.

Growing up, speaking Malay only with my family, and English with everyone else meant that time and time again, I discover words I often heard from my (Indonesian) mother that I thought was Malay but turned out to be Indonesian - words like _pipis_ and _ngompol_.

The way I'd discover this is when I use them with my wife, and she has nooo idea what I meant and confused at me why I'd thought she'd understand 😂 There are some other words tho that I knew were Indonesian from the get-go cos they clearly sounded _foreign_, like _budeg_. There are also some words that I thought were Indonesian, and they are, but happen to also be Malay too, like _kualat_.

true, that was also the case for the longest time for Pixelfed - tho for Verni's Pixelfed app at least they did it bcos they wrote a native app for iOS so to create an Android app, they'd have to maintain a completely separate code base that is preferably native to Android as well.

For Pixelfed, it was already written in non-native code already that supports multiplatform but for some reason Android got the app a lot later than iOS lol. Anyway, Vernissage is still very early in their development and don't even have any mobile apps yet, tho I hope when they do, they'd support both from the get-go.

Vernissage used to be the name of a 3rd party Pixelfed app on iOS that's super good and polished in comparison to the official app. Due to certain shortcomings of the Pixelfed project, they decided to rebrand their Pixelfed app as "Impressia", and use the Vernissage name for a brand new Fediverse project that is still very early and private (but open source).

If their Pixelfed app was so good, I don't see why their own project couldn't be better and have their mobile app available on both platforms eventually.

Bruh 💀 This is just a mild example, but I like how the common _defense_ of those blindly supporting this man whenever I try and highlight the faults of this project or rather its lead, in the nicest way possible without trying to be mean towards them, is that I should not share my opinion (of #Pixelfed) in a negative, critical light esp when compared to other Fedi projects/clients I wanted to bring eyes to, deservingly.

It's kinda nuts that over a month later, my wife who's never had #migraine/#vertigo or any (frequent/serious) #health issues in general in the past, is still suffering from pretty bad vertigo attacks from time to time.

Since she was hospitalised for a nite, she's never gotten back to her "usual" healthy self just yet for a non-short period of time. We're kinda puzzled how this could even have started or what could have caused it cos, again, she's never had issues relating to headache attacks or what she describes as "her entire world spinning" before - in fact, she rarely gets sick (in the past), and yet now she almost forgot what it was like to be "normal" again.

We've been seeing an #ENT specialist for this and so far, idk how helpful it's been, honestly. The bills have been pretty expensive (since, private specialist hospital) but fortunately, we're insured so all of the charges were fully covered. Now, I'm just not sure what to do - one thing I could think of is switch to a different ENT specialist, considering I'm somewhat losing confidence with the current one, but at the same time I'm not sure if ENT is the right field for this in the first place (tho the current specialist attributed my wife's first vertigo _attack_ to an ear infection reaction, at the time).

All I know is I think it's insane that, assuming that what my wife is currently experiencing is vertigo - that specialist is not even giving her any vertigo medication except for 2 weeks post-hospitalisation. Since then, she's only gotten some _experimental_ migraine nasal spray from the dude rather than something like Betaserc, which my SIL (a GP) seems to think she should've gotten a lot more stock of rather than just 2 weeks. Speaking of said SIL, she even questioned some decisions made by the specialist i.e. not sending my wife for physio, which apparently is common practice at KKs (public clinics) for vertigo patients (in order to assist them _find balance_ again in their _spinning world_).

Dk la, all in all, I hope both of us would see the light of day where my wife can consider herself normal and _sprightly_ again so she can be as active as she was before this all started.

yea I'd imagine BigPay and Wise are interchangeable in this case - essentially what you'd want is just an account that can hold multiple currencies and convert them for you on the fly during your payment.

So I really didn't add any JPY to my Wise account pun, I just added MYR and it'll convert as necessary when I make payments. That way, when I went home any leftover MYR I can just use as usual in any shops without any conversion/transaction fee or anything like that.

this def might not apply to whatever you're trying to do or ur trip, but during my time there, money-wise I only added MYR into my Wise account and make payments using NFC (with the digital Wise Card on Apple Pay) whenever I can, and cash withdrawn from 7E ATMs using my physical Wise card (all of which I mostly did late at night).

Tickets-wise, for anything including "special" trains (i.e. Shinkansen, "touristy" train rides, etc.) or attractions (i.e. theme parks, museums), I got by by simply booking them on Klook. Day-to-day train (i.e. JR trains) I just use an IC card like Suica digitally using Apple Wallet - which I also topup using Wise thru Apple Pay. Unless you have an iPhone or a bought-in-Japan Android phone, you will need a physical IC card tho.

Saw people suggesting Pixelfed close registration on its instance or exclude pixelfed.social from the instance directory to route more traffic to other Pixelfed instances instead, which is the fundamental idea behind #Fediverse, but it doesn't seem like Pixelfed's heading that route. The only thing I saw from Pixelfed's announcement recently was only to upgrade its instance, rather than promote others on the app itself or the bare minimum, on their #Mastodon account.

me la, that, in my circle cos almost everyone else ady migrate xD but others who've migrated keep saying how they'd _cry_ whenever they come back (implying how they're not entirely happy for moving) and make me second guess myself so I've decided to maybe just migrate _out of spite_ haha.

But it's all just talk for now, I've officially passed 1 year of my career break and surviving on my savings and haven't looked for a job yet cos I'm always distracted and afraid of rejection/being compared with other slaves like me.

Is there a GUI app on #Linux I could use to clone a disk (i.e. SD card) to image? I know there's `dd` but that isn't GUI. I normally use and prefer #KDE's Partition Manager which I could use to just copy over each partition from a disk to another, but copying the disk as an image would be far more portable - I know on #Windows people use Win32 Disk Imager, while on #macOS I think you could just use the built-in Disk Utility.

Update: WAIT - I think you could actually do this on KDE Partition Manager! Just mount the disk, right click the partition, click **Backup**, set an output path, and apply.

There's also an option to **Restore** a partition on the app, which I assume is when you then supply the image you had just backed up. I'm testing this right now, but I'm hopeful!

Update 2: It worked perfectly. I backed up the partition as an image (not sure if you could do so for multiple partitions in one image), and restored it on another empty SD card.

I tested it on an #OnionOS install for my #MiyooMini. After the restoration was done, put in my new (target) SD card, and the device literally booted right into the game I had paused right at the time when I removed the (source) SD card. KDE Partition Manager ftw.

Man, I feel horrible. Oh, added context: I'm not sick, my wife unfortunately has been for the past month or so, and was warded for a CT scan and some medication. If all is well, she should be discharged today.

Circling back to my misleading context: I feel horrible bcos my VPN does not work and I cannot remote into my local network from the hospital ffs xD My domains are all up and dandy, I'm sure there must be some stupid reason why the VPN isn't accessible despite the server itself being up lol.
