#silentsunday We're currently in Spain. It's raining a lot more than usual. The temperatures are normal, around 17 degrees Celsius. The almond trees are in bloom, and between showers, the weather is pleasant. We're taking a long walk, but in the distance, we can already see rain approaching. Luckily, we got home before it started. Today, the rain won't start until 5 p.m. We're going to visit a fishing village. I hope to take some nice pictures. #insectsaturday Two insects sought refuge on this tiny mushroom, that I happened to have in front of my lens. The mushroom didn't bend even a little under the weight of the "large" insect that landed on its cap. That's how light a fly is. I looked it up, and it might be a female fruit fly, but I'm not sure. I like the head with that big eye. I have no idea what the other insect is. It's so small that I didn't even notice it when I took a picture, a little bonus.

Since 1882, the building has been a museum about the history of the building and the prison system. The cell shown here was for the wealthy and the nobility. For the common people, there were small, dark, windowless cells in the basement, sometimes holding as many as 15 men. But food there was free. If you had (payed for) such a beautiful cell with a window and a view, you had to have your own food brought to you. You could also bring your own furniture and servants! Today, all kinds of torture instruments are displayed in this room. The gate was built in 1578 to a design by Joost Jansz. Bilhamer. At that time, it was actually a gate in the earthen ramparts of the city. The passage was built slightly curved, possibly to make it more difficult to fire a cannon into the city from outside. Bilhamer designed the gate on the city side of brick with alternating layers of natural stone and on the land side entirely of natural stone. On the land side (2nd photo), in addition to the pilasters, there are also sculpted cannon barrels. The gate is located on the former defensive moat, dug in 1577.

This facade covering blooms in the Netherlands in the winter with small yellow flowers. I'm going to try it later on, that squeaking of the leaves 🤣. Here the plant is called "Schoenlappersplant (Shoemaker's plant)" because apparently people used to polish their shoes with the large leather leaves. I like to use them in borders because they are evergreen, bloom in April and then have beautiful large leaves for the rest of the year. Especially in small city gardens they can play an important role all year round. I read that Seattle, like the Netherlands, has a temperate maritime climate, so we will see and be able to use the same plants back and forth 😀🌺🌿.

In my garden, the Bergenia with its large shiny leaves replaces the Hosta, which in my garden is usually eaten by snails after a month. Large leaves give a border peace, so in my garden the Bergenia does that. The snails leave them alone and they are also evergreen and have beautiful autumn colours. I really don't know how this photo was taken. I took the photo in a small museum in Rome, years ago. It is a strange reflection. I used this window as a motif for a wallpaper for a shortstay hotel in The Hague. In the 2nd photo you see a part of the 12 meter high wall of the stairwell with the wallpaper. I know Carnival is over, but I still want to show you something of the Carnival parade on March 8th of this year in Ayamonte #Spain with these pictures. The parade was not as big as in big cities, but that is exactly why it was so moving. There was sun, there was joy, beautiful costumes that had been worked on hard, you could see that. I was moved by it. My husband was too, he said. During that period I lay awake at night because of everything that was happening in the world. But at that moment I forgot all that and enjoyed the fun around me. If you feel like it, maybe experience it a little bit too. The dandelion (taraxacum officinale), here with its beautiful fluffy crown, so widespread, so common, but also so beautiful. Not always nice to have in your lawn or gravel path, but I always leave a few in the flower beds. Then just weed. And if you have the space, you can perhaps let them do their thing. They are edible, the leaves for salad and the flowers for tea. You can enjoy the Hydrangea for so long. This shrub blooms profusely in the summer, even in the shade, in late summer the color changes to pink or green or very dark red depending on which variety you have. And then in winter the flowers become like lace, which is nice to photograph.
