I've been trying for a few months now to find someone capable of doing a machining project. After MANY frustrating conversations with machinists who find this job either too small (for their big shop) or too large (for their boutique shop) I'm posting here for reach and boosts, etc...

My goal is to take steel rod stock (likely stainless, but this is flexible based on pricing) in either 7/16" or 15/32" diameter (either should work, i believe) and do the following operations to it:

1. cut to 6" length (ultimately, if this has to be done in long batches first, it could then be parted out at the end)

2. give one end a very small radius (either 1/16" or 1/32" radius)

3. machine the other end down toward a point shape but then leave a "ball" on the end. (this ball doesn't have to be perfectly round at the tip, but it would be nice to come as close as possible)

I have a STEP file for this project, but you can see a rendering of it in this post.

Thankfully the source rod stock would be easily-obtained sizes and nothing exotic. (We can also adjust the overall length of the resulting parts so that there's no waste... like if we take a 4' segment of source rod but the cutting kerf means that the resulting pieces are a shade under 6" in length overall, that's fine... the idea would be to yield eight parts from a 4' source piece of stock)

The goal would be to produce at least a dozen of these rods, but ideally we'd scale that up to 50 or even 100 pieces, if that improves the pricing. The timeline would be for me to take delivery of at least a dozen finished pieces no later than May 5th... but if we can turn out more of them well before that, well this is a plus.

Does ANYONE out there find this project appealing to take on?

Or, if you KNOW a machinist, would you share this project with them to see if they are interested?

The police report is a hoot though... "On 12/18/2025 at approximately 1927 hours, I, Officer Wayde Anderson #194, and other officers were dispatched to the Hampton Inn located at 3000 Eagandale Place in the city of Eagan for a weapons call. Dispatch notes indicated that federal agents were staying in room 322, and an agent's firearm had been fired in the room. I arrived and made contact with the federal agent in question whom I identified as Bradley Shaver. Bradley wasn't injured; however, I observed a hole in his sweatshirt that I later learned was caused by the fired 9mm round."

"Bradley's supervisor, Adam Autio, was contacted and informed of the incident. The firearm, as well as two magazines, 28 unfired 9mm rounds, the "backstrap", the fired casing, and fabric from Bradley's clothing were entered into evidence for safekeeping. If you've been following the story of Kara, my incarcerated trans friend who has is being held in Texas and has been behind bars for almost three years now, this is the latest need:

Everything she has left in the world is in about 7 bins like these. (It's actually maybe 5 bins like these plus two cardboard boxes and one or two small plastic shoeboxes, but you get the idea. Imagine 7 Home Depot style storage bins)

These have been in a very generous person's basement for over a year, but that person and their family are moving far away. So there's a need to re-home Kara's bins and keep them safe until her release.

Please Note: We're not looking for a handout. There's budget for this.

We need a NYC local who can help (a) secure us new a storage spot, then (b) physically move the bins to that new spot, then (c) guarantee the bins' safety until Kara's release (which could be another year but which we of course hope comes much sooner)

Again, there is reasonable budget that can be made available for a Lyft XL or a rental car (the bins are currently in Brooklyn) and for the costs of a storage unit or for funds to be paid directly to someone who will host these bins in their own possession.

In the latest saga of "tech upgrades that break unexpected things" we seem to have many reports of the latest version of Android that was pushed to many devices, including my Pixels, now having issues with sending DTMF tones down the line during calls.

"Press 2 to speak to the front desk"

"Press 9 to search for your package"

And, in my case, "This is a call from a Federal Prison. To accept this call, press 5"

^ all of these no longer seem to work, or work very inconsistently. I'm wondering if this latest version of Android is cutting off (or otherwise nerfing) just how long / how loud the DTMF tones get sent down the line.

I suspect this is the case because if I go on speaker phone and use a site like https://onlinetonegenerator.com/dtmf.html to blast tones out of my laptop speakers, all of these systems (including TruLinks/CorrLinks) work just fine.

And yes I have tested using a DTMF Tone Generator app on my phone itself. It doesn't work. Likely something about the Dialer app muting local phone sounds and not passing them along down the line.

Arg.

Anyone else out there facing this?

Ok, internet, I've looked and looked and for the life of me I can't find something that seems like it should be easy to implement and would sell well: study guide / brain trainer software that would allow you to easily make self-quizzing tools.

Anyone can hand-make flash cards, but it'd be nice not to waste paper. But much more than that I would hope such software starts learning success rates, so that it starts offering you more and more of the questions that haven't been answered as successfully/quickly.

Also, the ability to incorporate images as well as merely text would be marvelous.

Bonus: being able to populate all of this on a computer and not pecking away at a teeny smartphone screen keyboard would definitely be desirable.

I'm still on my kick of playing with tracker technology for luggage and more, and a question as arisen: I often get messages about "unknown Air Tag traveling with you" because all of the ones I'm using belong to Tarah or Emily or someone else other than me.

Let's say you *do* get a message like that, what steps would you take to locate such an Air Tag? With a suitcase it's pretty straightforward, but what about a motorcycle or a car? You can't reasonably tear the entire thing apart.

I would think that the Apple's ultrawideband technology would be used in getting that pinpoint localization of the tag, but is that available to people other than the tag's current owner or authorized parties? Can a "stranger" ping a nearby Air Tag and fix its position discretely with their own iPhone?

If they can't what's the alternative? An SDR with a very specific directional antenna?

I've created an account on pixelfed.social but sadly the Admins there seem to have disabled all of the Import functions which is of course the entire point of having an account there.

I've downloaded my whole Instagram archive in JSON format but would like to join an instance that hasn't nerf'd their features. Any good recommendations for a pixelfed instance that has more options available to their users?

Have you ever been riding an elevator and found yourself enjoying a pleasant and soothing woman's voice incorporated into the announcements in the cab?

While many companies in the industry do this now, the first and for a long time the only manufacturer to offer this feature was Otis Elevators.

I was seized with the desire to know more about the person behind the voice and ultimately decided to look her up and call her. This eventually resulted in a delightful hour-long phone call, which I have edited into this interview now published on my channel. Enjoy!

I did indeed find her. Linda and I had a lovely phone call this afternoon and that interview will be released as an upcoming video in the near future.

So I've learned that RedBox has gone bankrupt and is shutting down. Apparently property owners are getting quotes as high as $1000 from companies who will contract to haul the machines away. I know several hackers interested in them, however, and would be willing to take one or two for free. If you are in central Florida and have a RedBox machine you no longer want on your property, you can reach out to me and I'll put you in touch with someone who will take care of it for you and re-home it.
