For server systems that are a little more slimmed down, it does depend on the use case, but I do tend to like the BSD&#39;s. Got a soft spot for OpenBSD as I used to run it on a Pentium 1, which I used to pivot around the firewall in high school. It is very stable though -- if you want more up to date FreeBSD can be a bit more reasonable.<br/><br/>I&#39;m hearing interesting things about NixOS, especially by people playing with AI, but it&#39;s a bit of a different paradigm. <br/><br/>Gentoo is another Linux that can do pretty well being slimmed down as well -- but depending what software you need, distributing everything as source code that needs to be compiled could result in some time consuming compilation depending on the hardware you&#39;re using. Though you can always compile on another machine and move over binaries.<br/><br/>And truth be told while I don&#39;t personally usually look to Slackware for the minimal approach, you really could just install the A, AP, and N software sets and have a pretty viable server. She clearly understands it. I will say though that for one, that book was already on this person&#39;s radar, and for another, while it presents the building blocks of how the Eurodollar system COULD come about, it didn&#39;t really drive home the ramifications of the fact that it DID.<br/><br/>The big difference here being that domestic banks trade IOU&#39;s back and forth, but ultimately, settle in bank reserves (previously gold). Eurodollar banks, on the other hand, do NOT settle in bank reserves directly, but rather, by netting out offsetting transactions, created in a fairly complex web of pledged assets, as well as asset transforming derivatives, and others. Things like Forex Swaps, Currency Swaps, and other things in this boat, such that a bank may have nothing other than say, Yen and derivatives on the assets side of their balance sheet, a bunch of dollars on the liability side, and still be perfectly capable of interfacing with the dollar system, despite their inability to access the Fedwire system or bank reserves at all. Indeed, while some of these banks do have correspondent banks in the US, there are banks operating in the Eurodollar system with no direct links back to the US at all (and shadowbanks of course that aren&#39;t even banks!).<br/><br/>I don&#39;t think it&#39;s a huge leap for most Bitcoiners who&#39;ve studied a bit to grok, but there does seem to be a general taking for granted that the Fed is central. The reality is that the Fed&#39;s centrality was heavily eroded by the Eurodollar system, which is why they managed to lose control of inflation in the 60&#39;s (as the money creation was happening primarily off shore, even if there was a bit domestically to pay for Vietnam), which broke the peg to gold in the first place. We talk all day about Triffin&#39;s Dilemma, but then forget about the bookkeeping tricks that are how it was solved.<br/><br/>The big example I used that resonated was thinking about if Coinbase, for instance, had 1 million bitcoin in the ledger in Brian Armstrong&#39;s nightstand, but had 10 million bitcoin worth of customer balances. It&#39;s not hard to think about how this could come about -- they could just take fiat and tell the customers they&#39;ve got bitcoin. This isn&#39;t at all far off from when banks extend loans with fractional reserve banking anyway. If suddenly they need to meet a withdrawal demand for 2 million bitcoin, naturally, they can&#39;t go to the blockchain (the equivalent of the Fed here) for more -- nobody has that privilege. But what they could do is go to say, Kraken, who might have, let&#39;s call it, 3 million bitcoin on their Trezor. Coinbase could offer up Ethereum, XRP, and perhaps some literal shit from a portapotty to sweeten the deal as collateral against a loan of Bitcoin from Kraken, and given that customers at Coinbase don&#39;t find delayed service to be out of the ordinary anyway, nobody would be any the wiser about the state of their not being fully backed.<br/><br/>The innovation here being, of course, the creativity of collateral, and the sourcing of the cash from outside of official network channels. There&#39;s nothing DRASTICALLY different about this than doing it within the domestic banking system, aside from the fact that because it doesn&#39;t require the regulatory framework or the interactions of the Fed, it allows for the unregulated operations of institutions who aren&#39;t subject to any of the jurisdictions that people think of as normally applying to dollar creation. Specifically, what may help to think about here is reserve requirements, which, while effectively gone since 2008, used to be a major component of bank regulation in the US. These NEVER were able to be effectively applied to the offshore banks because there was never a regulator with the enforcement authority to ensure they were. If a bank in the Cayman Islands had no dollars and just a bunch of coconuts they felt they could get a loan against to cover it, nothing stopped them from offering a new client a $100M deposit in exchange for whatever other assets the client was bringing in. What really caught his ear was hearing that the Fed has NOTHING to do with most dollars in existence, and indeed, they don&#39;t even ever touch US shores or regulations.<br/><br/>We got into talking about Eurodollars and in general the private formation of capital (as well as the plumbing used by banks and shadow banks to keep all their balls in the air while juggling a lot more deposits than they have cash to cover) and he asked me where I learned about it all, because, like most Americans (or humans) this stuff just wasn&#39;t taught to him in school.<br/><br/>I let him know about a few podcasters and authors (Jeff Snider, Michael Howell, George Gammon, to name a few), but the big resource that really put it into a solid framework, which I&#39;m compelled to spread around as far and wide as I can, is Perry Mehrling&#39;s 2012 course taught at Columbia University entitled &#34;Economics of Money and Banking.&#34; It&#39;s free on Coursera, but while I&#39;ve pointed people there before, I was reminded that Coursera neglects to include the readings, which honestly, were a helpful component of keeping up with it all (and unlike my ACTUAL college classes, I did read all of).
