We spent nine months surveying local seagrass meadows. Then we made a traditional taverna tablecloth map showing the seagrass alongside rivers, wildlife, and ecological info. Now we've distributed it to restaurants across the island for the summer season. Pretty damn proud of this piece of work.

10k or so later, another tollbooth. I insert my ticket and the price flashes up: 00.00. The gate opens, I go on, and big signs direct me off the highway, which is closed beyond that point, and dumps me out onto Bosnian singletrack back roads. The map slams back into place and my phone calmly advises me to drive on.

I am driving, completely alone, on a six lane highway in the dark, with no other visible reference points. A tollbooth appears - all the kiosks are empty, but it automatically dispenses me a ticket, opens the barrier, and on I go, through the dark, the app pinging away as it whirls through empty space.

As soon as I pass through passport control and start down the highway again, the maps app on my phone goes nuts, first trying to reroute me, then insisting I make a U-Turn, then take turns off the road which do not exist. I look down at my phone, and the arrow is just whirling around, there's no road visible, sometimes a river appears and disappears.

I had a very disconcerting experience last night. Driving south from Split in Croatia on a very big highway, there's a last turn for Dubrovnik, and then the highway crosses the border into Bosnia. It's after sunset and the border crossing is empty apart from the border guards, you can hear the crickets buzzing.
