Urgh... I felt rough on my long run this weekend despite easy effort. I had a bit of a sore throat earlier in the week. Then a big list of covid symptoms hit last night 🤮

My HRV has only ever done this after covid, ultra runs, or alcohol. I'm hoping it's just restless sleep from bashed up legs and an unfamiliar bed.

I do often get a one-night drop like this after a heavy effort like a race, but perceived exertion wasnt that high over the week. Total load was about 20 hours on feet though, which is more than double my baseline (6-8 hrs/week). So could be accumulated fatigue.

#Garmin #running

That's a wrap on a busy training week in Eryri. One (1) day of good weather and 5 of wind and rain. I trained 4 days out of 6, with 2 rest days (enforced by the weather, but probably a good idea.)

I seconded some grade 2 and 3 scrambles in the Glyderau as part of a course. It was my first time at this grade and made trickier due to weather conditions and greasy rock. (Routes completed: Idwal Buttress on Glyder Fawr, Chimney Crack on Tryfan Bach, Bastow Buttress Variant and North Tower on Tryfan, plus some grade 1 gullies in descent).

Challenging but highly enjoyable. I also solo ran/hiked/scrambled the Snowdon Horseshoe route, my first time up Crib Goch.

I'd wanted to do two more classic horseshoes (Cwm Bochlywd, Carneddau Southern Ridges), but strong winds and heavy rain looked like too much risk. So I swapped in a low level run around the Ogwen Valley to get some elevation in on rough mountain terrain, with a bit of grade 1 scrambling up False Gribin too.

#TrailRunning #running #mountains #climbing #Wales #Cymru

Managed to sprain my ankle... in the gym 🫤

Standard medical advice is RICE or variants of it (Rest Ice Compression Elevation). But last time I followed this I ended up with my calf wasting away and a weakened ankle for months. Reading around it, it seems like the advice is weakly evidenced, and light activity using pain as a signal to desist may lead to a quicker recovery: https://marathonhandbook.com/rice/

#running

The Arc 25 mandatory kit logistics is harder work than the race 😂

I had to upgrade to a 20L pack from my usual 10L, but it does all pack down (just). Weighs a lot though. I have been training with a loaded pack and it's enough to induce walking on some inclines.

2 separate headtorches each with dedicated backup power feels like overkill for what's probably 2 or 3 hours of night running tops. I'm guessing they copy/pasted the kit from Arc 100 and didn't prune as much as they could.

Not pictured: compass (for a coastal path?!).

#running

The idea is to feed a network of cameras covering the roads into training a pothole detecting algorithm.

But the reason there's so many potholes isn't because authorities don't detect them, it's because they're starved of resources (in some cases actually bankrupt) and are having to prioritise statutory services like social care. So even if there's enough camera coverage for this to "work" it's pointless unless there's actually a budget for maintenance crews.

Even if you want a tech solution here, predictive maintenance using traffic levels, local weather, and stats/ML would likely have more value. But that's not "AI" it's just sparkling operations research so it doesn't get considered anyway.

"Whenever you spot a disconnect between what your gut is telling you and what is supposed to be rational, it’s an important opportunity to understand something new. And then you can start this game of back-and-forth. Can you articulate your gut instinct and place it within a rational discussion? If there’s still a disconnect, can you visualize why? As you play that game, your imagination will gradually reconfigure. And in the end, if you’re persistent, your instinct and your reason will align, and you will be smarter. Feels more like a barefoot shoe now - foam seems to have gone. Might work for some but I'm not conditioned for it.

Interestingly the Hyperion Tempo was a prototype of sorts, and felt like walking on marshmallows (was stable running, however). The successor is the Hyperion (and Hyperion 2, but I tend to buy last season's model to keep cost down). It's less spongy out of the box, so I'm wondering if it will be more durable.

Replaced my road #running shoes after nearly 800km (Brooks Hyperion Tempo -> Brooks Hyperion). I really like the shoes but I'm pretty sure the illustration in the box depicts classic overstriding bad running form...

Longest #running for me yet. 100k split over two days. Day 1 was in itself my longest run. Day 2 slowed down further but the goal was just to finish.

Definitely bumping up against the limits of my muscular endurance. Hobbling about at the end of both runs. I did recover enough for day 2, but felt flat on even modest hills.

Some extremely muddy sections in the river valleys which sapped energy, but managed not to fall!
