i've been toying around with this alternate, semantically rich, realization of a versioned-nodes-like-thing. i haven't really figured out what i think of it. basic idea is that each node holds an arbitrary amount of structured data (numbers, text, bytes, times, list of values, sorted map of values, tagged union of values), which are accessed and updated through the node service via an "access-modify-commit" style api.

there's a lot i like about it: abstracting the text storage representation gives me hope of someday escaping unicode :) applications/libraries need not concern themselves about segmenting nodes properly. blobs may not be necessary anymore‽

on the other hand… it makes for a complicated node service. like it's potentially doing text transcoding! there's also a feeling of potential for feature creep? like, the original felt like a completable component - this version less so.

      right, so my main gig has decided to roll LLMs into their internal and customer facing software. while it doesn't touch what i do for them… that is moving up my timeline to find or found a tech workers coop.

international membership is very important to me - both for the diversity of the cooperators and to reduce barriers to emigration. direct democracy is right up there too - sure, assign individuals to be *responsible* for things that need that, but the direction and decision making should be held by collectively. diverse expertise also compliments diverse membership - specialists in all different areas *and* general purpose folks to glue things together.

i'd want a mixture of projects. some contracting, some possibly-profitable products, some world improvement. small consulting projects might be taken on by the judgement of whomever finds them, everything else probably by group assent.

probably an idle dream, but a culture of competent conflict preemption would be amazing.

finally, incorporation jurisdiction… somewhere decent, that won't restrict end to end encryption. which is… impossible to be certain of.

anyway, i'm not sure if something like that exists, but i'm going to try to find it.

#GetFedIHired (#GetFediCooped ?)

      i've been thinking about building an electric bicycle, and we want to convert our old car with rusted out fuel lines to electric… and my brain has been spinning on electric-motored sailboats forever (why brain? i would need to go into the boat-building business to be able to do that without breaking "don't make enough money to pay income tax" rule).

while those are pretty different in specifics, the overall architecture isn't:

```
power generation → power storage
↕
motor-generator ↔ inverter-charger
↕
sensors → controller → signals
↕         ↕
human interface
```

(ugh, forgot the `power storage → controller` link)

      our rural internet cooperative is a week or two from being fully operational. and so when i see city folks complaining about bad internet, it's hard not to think how much easier it would have been in a city.

we'll need about 30 households to get to reasonable rates with 10Gbps transport to the nearest carrier-neutral data center and 10Gbps IP transit there. the expensive part is transport - we only have one provider willing to build out to us.

in terms of our construction costs, we've got tens of kilometers of fiber, and lots of easements to negotiate, to run to get to 30 households. that's a lot of work. it'll probably take us years to get there.

in a city? you can probably get those 30 households without crossing a street. maybe 500 meters of fiber. you probably have multiple options for transport, and maybe even an internet exchange in your city. from my perspective out here, that sounds luxurious.

My only concern is it might be too loud in the basement.

Previously I was thinking about a normally closed relay, held open by the grid, controlling the power to a 1W red LED.

In addition to either option I want to figure out how to let me know directly, as I'm not always in the common house. I think that'd be in conjunction with other network monitoring though.

      So I've been thinking of setting up something so a light comes on in the common house kitchen if the grid power goes out (how else would you know) until I first started up this server I'm building to live in the basement and the power supply screamed until I put power on the second input.

One input on the grid and the other on the solar and we'll be all set.

XGPON makes that 10Gb/2.5Gb. you can't offer other services over those fibers (without engineering that's more expensive than running new fiber).

if you divide by fiber there's obviously no shared channel - you can offer whatever service you want without affecting anyone else. it's future-proof - at least to multiple Tb. it's also flexible, you have a request for a 40Gb circuit in a weird place? can do. they need dark fiber to somewhere? sure.

that said, you can probably pivot fiber laid for GPON to divide by wavelength instead of by time. with the right equipment you'd be able to give everyone their own 25Gb symmetrical connection, maybe multiple for some people.

XG-PON has a symmetric version though, and NG-PON is symmetric on each wavelength.

the internet cooperative i'm putting together isn't using any of those though. everyone gets their own fiber for now, with 1G or 10G symmetric. if we need to later we can do wavelength multiplexing, but i honestly don't see that happening any time soon.
