There are shared public common concerns, of which transportation is but one. (Clean water is another.) If the majority conclude that radically slower and lower energy livelihoods are the correct path to sustainable and ultimately better ways to live, I'm down. Bitcoin ultimately equates to energy expenditure/consumption as currency – and very computationally and energetically complex at that. How does Bitcoin not perpetuate hierarchy? People and physical ecosystems are inherently connected and mutually dependent, drawing nourishment from reciprocal and interwoven values (racing to accelerate computers to consume massive complexly generated electricity, is furthest from permaculture as you can get). Sure, sliced bread is great when toasted. But when you're entirely off-grid, there are a few more components required before toasting can commence. I say off-grid. Actually, I now have a pretty smart glass-fiber line that does pretty smart internet things, given the right configuration. That, and a bunch of other stuff (clean clothes anyone?) happen with these, my current (anyone?) seven special components, sort of from the bottom:
Battery charger and its magic box that auto-switches if'n I need charging (I don't.)
Mid-left: car-type DC fuse protection thingie.
Top: charge-controller by Epever that just works (as opposed to crappy ones that break). It connects to a couple of 400w solar panels and the lithium battery and does nifty stuff (including feeds to my 24v DC frig. [which in turn feeds me]).
To the right is a 24v lithium battery that is expensive and requires some config. fiddling – but after that, relieves one of the maintenance and more primitive aspects of lead-acid batteries (reckoned to charge on for 10 years+ to boot). The little heat-sink-looking thing next to it, is where I step down the batt's 24v to 12v to power a water pump, some now widely available DC light bulbs that are 4w for good light, as well as my fiber-optic-box-thingie (tech term), and a mobile travel router. Both of these use negligible amounts of electricity (and yet, they much desire a stable 12v which the lithium battery and transformer deliver admirably).
Anyhoo, fellow web developer Vic kindly inquired about if I document this version of the development rabbit-hole, which I don't, so here it is. It's really quite similar to the sometimes rewarding, always challenging, world of troubleshooting and deploying software (read: you learn to cultivate patience).
And when it works, you get to eat toast and shower and post to nostr and stuff.

I've known of json. I've known of websockets.
However, I've only known of this clever decentralized way to connect to one another – without some arbitrary gatekeeper with moral concern that begins and ends with shareholder profit using whatever technique maximizes it. Putting it another way, I'm pretty stoked to find this coalescence of fellow humans interested in the liberation of a liberated digital commons. That's a lot of the l-word. Brings me to nostr's seeming affinity for bitcoin and by extension, possibly a libertarian political stance. I'm sure I'm not accurately summarizing all of nostr. What I'm saying is that I just don't happen to be a bitcoin guy (well, I did get zapped 24k times but it was a fluke [involving a dominatrix. let's just move on]). To be sure, my personal jury is still out on cryptocurrency, but I don't even know about stacking ducks or corn any of that. Still, I'm definitely interested in a community asserting its agency to make decisions in decidedly decentralized ways. Nor are the centralized clowns in any danger. Their racket thrives on energy. (And no, you miners out there, I don't claim to know the score of who squanders more energy than who.)
This is sort of a long-winded way to introduce a piece I made just over 10 years ago.
It speaks to my persuasion (in addition to a wisp of the zeitgeist of the time) about the myth of progress and such stuff. It comes up if you hear enough people emote "I just looove technology!" They need to read more probably. (and a fine tech in itself!)
In the subsequent 10 years, it's only become more difficult to posit some dogmatic worldview with a straight face.
Nonetheless, I've met thoughtful, kind people here and I'd feel remiss to not show a little of my cards regarding such stuff.
Oh! and ironically enough, I'm a web developer. I perhaps delude myself that we can use this stuff like a nice light bicycle that travels freely and with conviviality – and without someone's orange bullsh*t hanging on it, weighing it down. (I think that's an amazon reference but ...)

I'd think a major elephant-in-the-room part of the 'solution', is clearly recognizing the antagonism that online (on-device) has with being human in an actual place. Cliche-sounding or otherwise, I think this also relates to my gnawing irritation with a libertarian political stance (worldview). Wellness doesn't come from living in isolation of one another, nor did it ever. Nor are we independent nor invulnerable. Far from it. Still, the basic decentralization and free agency to communicate with one another is Nostr's potential. Naive or otherwise, I'm staying tuned to see how it might evolve to use-cases appropriate for local community empowerment (and joy among other self-defined needs). The potential global reach and capitalizing-potential is always gonna motivate the technocratic 'tools'. However, there is a huge 'educational' need for folks to see through the veils placed upon us through schooling that has been promoting progressive consumption of all kinds. I'd think that your cynicism that perhaps 'no one cares' is being informed by some of the said rackets etc. Sorry to be a tad ranty, but that thin layer of introspection seems contagious. Regardless, "Who's doing what to whom, and who's benefitting?" (and who's getting screwed?) seems a timeless question worth asking. 🤙🏼
