Ok, so I wrote a bunch of go to make riverrun work right, and it does, almost. But Icecast won, so then I pivoted hard into Icecast orchestration, and the repo went from go to shell. Just have to make the ices2 stream service pull from the proper directory and then we'll have something we can execute on any debian box to produce a working radio station which takes community contributions. https://github.com/davidemerson/riverrun

I was actually thinking of the shipboard / low bandwidth use case last night, and I made some notes on it, but I don't know what to do yet. Go too low on the stream bandwidth, and it just sounds bad, offer numerous stream bitrates and things get complicated. At the moment, I am thinking more along the lines of "keep the stream high quality" and "maybe add in the option to feature some songs as a download" ... particularly since the music here is often homemade, I don't see a problem with letting artists set a flag upon upload that they want to allow the track to be downloaded for N number of days on demand.

I used to DJ on SDF.org (anonradio). It was a ton of fun in terms of being forced to listen to new music. It was also a lot of community coordination. Maybe there's a software need here... perhaps instead of sets we just dump files into a directory and a stream app plays them and discards them upon being played, so it's a continuum?

Tbh the best part is the booklets: clearly written, with examples and exercises. And a visible scale lends a tangible, relatable quality to the math which a computer simply doesn’t, despite its obvious functional superiority. Vernier calipers have it too, despite linearity in that case.
