Minute Cryptic - 18 September, 2025 (I nearly finished their book, I'm 1/3td of the way through the bigger crossword at the end. I could have finished the book much faster but I tend to go slower, rather than faster, with books I enjoy. It's one of those books a person buys for someone else in the hope that they'll enjoy it too. Whether it ends up like good, but apparently overly red, boots bought for a niece, as decided by her friends "little red riding hood" comments, it's ultimately up to the receiver whether or not the gift is useful. Especially when it is work reading it, or a distraction. If everyone liked the same stuff it'd be a dull world, and, in the case of anyone a generation apart you're definitely better asking them what they want rather than making any assumptions. Although I have recently acquired some Vans, which are slightly too small for me, because a nephew didn't like them and kept them at the bottom of a pile of stuff, then left for university, and definitely hates them, so every cloud has a silver lining and possibly blisters until they stretch. I watched bits of President Trump's state visit to Windsor Castle yesterday and it was quite amazing but I did feel for them having to sit through the bit where the, exceptionally skillful and well rehearsed, military bands played music and marched around a field. I think I would have ordered a drone strike on an empty field somewhere so I could duck out for a bit and avoid insult - because it's not them it's the music. People like different things, that's normal, but over an hour of that and I'd go as far as invading Barbados to get out of listening to it. Maybe that's the idea. War music.)

Minute Cryptic - 9 September, 2025 (I had nightmares last night about a pastel coloured chicken shack, that from the highway, because this was in America, looked like a low rise concrete rectangle wholly painted with blue, light blue, and orange in broad diagonal stripes. And I got inside and there were three staff and a buffet which smelled delicious. There were three servers, a young guy refilling the buffet to the left, and a man in the middle, and a lady to the right. They were all wearing uniform in pastel colours and blue chequered chef visors. The lady serving to my right, who was home counties English, judging by her accent, said, about the man on the far left "has he been eating those cheese fries again? They're delicious. Why don't you try them'. I got the impression he couldn't stop although he looked well enough. I tried a fry and they were totally delicious and everything else smelled delicious even the cabbage. To be fair the cabbage did look healthy and isn't traditionally associated with fast food in America. It was only a nightmare because I'm trying to stick to a diet. Yesterday I exceeded my daily calories because someone bought me a snack. They were delicious fries, the perfect thickness, fried in the perfect oil, with just the right amount of some umami rich cheese like parmigiano or epoisses or a really good cheddar, perfectly crisp and with a good choice of seasoning. Diet hell? Seems to me that would depend on perspective.)

Minute Cryptic - 3 September, 2025 (I got it, with a pen & paper, but I'm not used it's the best clue and maybe should have had a question mark. I can't go into my reasons why without giving away the clue, so I won't. The UK is going to get Swedish, looking at the bond market and available options, which is a 360 because we've been going American, complete with strip-malls, for just over 30 years, with concomitant political fallout, but the UK is only a small factor of the interesting times, tempered somewhat by the time of year, in the bond markets. I haven't slept brilliantly because I got woken up by a younger relative who had until midnight to pay their rent on their new student digs and hadn't left it to the last minute because they'd been trying *all day*. I suspect Purplebricks website TBF.)

Minute Cryptic - 31 July, 2025 (The last few weeks I have been mostly vegan, which isn't so bad because, unlike a lot of vegans, I can cook so haven't been relying on excessively priced UPF vegan ready meals and convenience food. And it tastes good. It isn't health reasons, although my BMI was just starting to push into overweight so I've kind of used it as an excuse to lose 2-3kg. My blood pressure and blood sugar were fine even when I was overweight - having access to testing kits while caring for a, as it turns out, more imminently dying father than I expected, although I think subconsciously I'd inferred it, allowed me to check my own periodically. I think the otherwise good stats are because my diet was otherwise good - I was eating too much but not badly, I don't drink soda/have sugar, or artificial sweetners, with drinks, and I walk. I could carry on being vegan indefinitely but I haven't been wholly vegan - I eat full fat yoghurt in the morning, had goats/cows cheese for lunch, and someone bought me a burger two weeks ago - I'm not going to waste it. I think we're fundamentally omnivores. And I don't want to be too tasty and herbivore-like if Armageddon comes. Although I'd be far from tender and a lot of vegans seem sinewy. I suppose the worst thing about diets is people going on about it. It has, or maybe I've deluded myself it has, improved a persistent flare up of spondyloarthritis. I think diet may play a big role. The best, most effective diet I went on, and recommend is Michael Mosley's Fast 800. I started it as a result of his death, my logic was if someone his age can die in such a silly, but otherwise noble, way, he's kind of like a diet Jesus.)

Minute Cryptic - 21 July, 2025 (Post universal internet, and not for crosswords, the international applicability of idioms is very interesting. I've observed some degree of convergence in relatives below the age of 20 or younger because of YouTube and Tiktok, mostly between American English and British English which are mostly similar with occasional contronyms that can lead to misunderstandings. But also via ghastly brainrot memes, basically deliberately obtuse or random often figurative art, and music from beyond English speaking countries. Maybe the great firewall of China has insulated both the Chinese and outside world from similar convergences and Italian Brainrot. It's mostly harmless. Anyone below age N likes stuff people above age N find inexplicable. Often anyway. The inverse of All Bran. Although I quite liked All Bran as a young person. Not as much as Crunchy Nut Cornflakes or hummus on wholemeal toast with butter.)

I don't wholly agree. There were techies saying this about Windows* and sub mainframe sized computers. My bet is that something akin to Jevons Paradox‡ happens, like with microcomputers onward and cars, with no net change in employment, and that the ratio of specialist jobs remains the same just in different places. Less mechanics but many more at the car manufacturer. I think declinist arguments are often wrong - there are still good parties but we're not necessarily invited. The future has always being learning and adapting, racing an egg-timer, sometime pain in the arse, called life.

* I had a conversation with someone in the 90s who argued that if Windows was too reliable they'd be out of a job. It essentially created modern technical support.

The problem with AI versus human creators is that a human creator can boost their influences or things they're a fans of consuming, like Kurt Cobain with Daniel Johnson or Mudhoney, or Taylor Swift having Paramore on the eras tour. There are countless examples in different forms. Me referencing Red Plenty recently. Sometimes, but not always, art is complicated, and I don't think an artist of any kind is at all obligated to list their references or explain. My principle problem with AI is that it's like a human creator but always without tribute or references to the things that influenced it. Also it's a commercial, derivative, use of work(s) other people spent time making, without even meagre recompense. It'd be bad form if a person did it and worse if a business did it. I think it will force people to up their game though, which is good.

An excellent video. The late 1950s/early 1960s was really the genesis of so much now cf. J.C.R Licklider's Man Computer Symbiosis (1960), Robert Bellman (1950s), Computers and Thought by Feigenbaum & Feldman (1963) - a compendium of the state of the art then, and stuff like the perceptron. I feel like we've reached the point where there is enough available computing for ideas that already existed to be implemented without finesse and many of the people taking credit, while totally deserving of praise because doing stuff is hard, shouldn't be viewed in isolation. * The UK, in a general election, is divided into districts called constituencies. Each constituency is represented by a single member of parliament - an MP. When the election is finished whichever political party has the most MPs forms a government. In the UK the Prime Minister is from whichever political party gains a large enough majority in parliament. Support for a prospective MP who doesn’t get elected does not count towards the national result. A vote for a prospective MP with little chance of been elected in a constituency could be regarded as a protest vote or a way of registering support for a political party and its policies, but it will not count towards the total of MPs in parliament.

It is possible that an MP does not have the majority of votes within a constituency but is elected. For instance, if there were five potential MPs, I’ll refer to them as ABCDE, and ‘A’ got 24% and won, it means the remaining 76% of votes were distributed between BCDE with none getting more than 24%. In other words ‘A’ didn’t get 76% of votes but was elected because they were the MP that got the most. The benefit of such a system is that it tends to favour the big, established, political parties and exclude the less popular ones - meaning that complicated governments, formed from political parties with different policies, are unlikely to be formed. There have been counter examples during wartime or more recently with a coalition between the Conservative party and the Liberal Democrat party when the Conservative party failed to get enough votes to form a government. The downside is obvious - minority voices or popular political parties are excluded, although, obviously junior members of a coalition don't matter as much unless they have the deciding votes.

UK voting can be tactical for maximum effect. Sometimes person can vote for the party they want, with no realistic chance of that party gaining power, which does register inasmuch as the percentages of votes that party got nationally does indicate people support the policies of that party, it’d be wrong to suggest that the vote is entirely wasted, or a vote for a party that is more likely to be elected that most closely aligns with their personal politics. I watched the last of To The Lake on Netflix, which was very good, quite grim, and implied Russia has an alcohol problem, which I think is a demonstrator that it's not in any way propaganda. Series 2 is finished/released but not on Netflix. Maybe it's some sanctions thing because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.I had a leaky 20 year old dishwashing machine and was entirely sober. I fitted the part correctly, but either I'm incorrect and I didn't fit the part correctly or the problem isn't the part that was implied by the symptoms. I may try silicone grease; I don't think that's an ideal solution but may help me narrow down the leak. I have a big tube of quality silicone grease for fountain pens. At the rate I use it for fountain pens I have a century's worth.)

It was good but appropriately sprinkled with pre Christian Norse mythology, which, in some ways, explains quite how dangerous the Northmen were, because, if a person truly believed those things, they were dangerous by default. It's kind of the Northern European/Scandinavian rock and roll years before they got engineering and accounting degrees, got into wine, Calvados, French and Mediterranean chicks, became Normans and settled down, or formed empires leading to things like The Great Northern War. Family in Sweden tell me the runestones are mostly stuff like X died valiantly at sea - the posher stone memorial equivalent of death notices in a local newspaper. There is a Norwegian comedy show in English called Norsemen, on Netflix, which has a similarly historically accurate take of pre Christian Norway except not bone crunchingly violent and very funny. I suspect it's a Norwegian reaction to TV and cinema 'Viking' dramas, and it's well worth a watch.)

* although I very much avoid artificial sweeteners (harder than you'd think†), carboxylmethylcellulose emulsifiers (harder than you'd think‡), polysorbate 80, low fat alternatives, and try to mostly eat stuff cooked from fresh because that's what I'm evolved to eat. A bit like a pig discovered fire. I don't care about MSG or 'natural flavouring' and have no fear of chemicals when making an informed choice. But, counterintuitively, it seems taste, mouthfeel and palatability, may affect how we digest things, independently of ingredients - see low fat alternatives.
