Most people think the captain is always the in charge. But there is a brief window every day, ordained by a certain alignment of celestial bodies, when a lowly deckhand is lifted to the pinnacle of importance and completely supersedes the captain’s authority.

This occurs when the sun is in ascension, perpendicular to the zenith, in contact with the horizon. At this precise moment a portal opens. Like a Druid at the solstice in Stonehenge, Buddha beneath the Bodhi Tree, Newton struck by the apple, a muezzin singing the sun to prayer from the top of a minaret, the lowly peon is transformed, becomes a priest in service of a god. He becomes “The Barista”.

Voices are hushed, movements slow and subdued, until the sacrament, is complete. The magical elixir is handed up to each member of the crew for their ablutions. At which point normal order resumes, and he who moments ago held the very mysteries of the universe in his hands, is once again a shambling swabbie, sent forward to haul up the anchor from the mud.

Such is the importance of hot coffee on a cold and misty November morning.

Mug of joe in hand, we motor out into sunrise on a mirror of polished brass. Dazzled by the light, we drift out of the winding channel until the keel brushes bottom and we ease her back.

We round Stingray Point and head north across the mouth of the Rappahannock River toward Windmill Point. Birds perch on the poles of fish traps like crucifixes. The sun boils the mist and lifts it overhead, a breeze riffles the water now and then.

The weather forecast is for calm all day, a calm before the storm. It will stay close and quiet until a cold front arrives from the southwest, swings around to west, then north, with gale force winds and a temperature drop of 20 degrees. Timing will be tight. We have started early and need to go hard all day to reach shelter before it catches us. With no wind expected, we’ll have to rely on the motor.

We don’t talk much. I can tell Jonathan is concerned. If we miss this window, it will be days before conditions settle down enough to continue. Logistical complications of a delay are piling up. Mentally, I recite the creeks we’ll pass going north where we can duck for cover.

Ten miles.

Twenty.

Thirty.

The hours drag on to the drone of the motor. The Bay looks slick and greasy, the sun a dull nickel in a murky puddle.

The flat water makes it easy to spot birds migrating south, though. They lift from the surface and clatter off like grasshoppers in tall grass. Hooded Mergansers. Pintails. Blue-winged Teals. Loons.

By late afternoon we spot Smith Point Light with binoculars. It marks the mouth of the Potomac where we’ll make the turn west to exit the Bay. It’s reassuring to see it, but still hours away. A group of watermen in a big open skiff comes astern and sets a drift net. No other boats out.

The sun is getting low, but the sky above is clearing, and we can now see the storm front approaching – a wall of clouds rising to the southwest. Within a half hour it stretches across half the sky. We cut inside the lighthouse to shave a little distance off. Finally we’re in the Potomac and pass Point Lookout. With a soft breeze on the quarter we can raise sails, which improves spirits if not progress. Jonathan recognizes landmarks along the shore. Only an hour or so to go, but now the tide is against us. So maybe two.

It’s full dark by the time we reach the entrance to Smith Creek. Getting in here is less trouble than last night, with a wider channel and clearly lighted markers of red and green. We round into Jutland Creek and the marina where a slip is reserved at the end of the pier. It’s a little too exposed (the regulars take the most protected spots), but at least it’s easy to get into. Which is good, because Jonathan realizes he’s never pulled a boat this size into a slip before. Any size boat, for that matter.

We spend a good hour stowing gear and getting the dock lines just so – enough slack we can jump to the dock, but still keep her from banging pylons. She has to weather wind and waves that will throw punches at us all night. We get cleaned up and head to the marina restaurant for a big hot meal of local seafood and cold beer.

By the time we finish dinner, white caps are charging into the harbor from the Potomac. Boats are bucking in their stalls, halyards are slapping and ringing against metal masts like alarm bells.

I see a bonfire burning bright on a backlot with people around it, so we wander over. It’s a group of retired Greek sport fishermen in folding chairs by the fire, eating pizza out of a box and drinking various concoctions from discrete mugs. They welcome us into the circle and tell their stories of storms and big fish and fooling the game wardens. With a wave of his arm, Gus says the entire dock behind us is now all Greeks, all their boats. (Very big boats.) We’re in their hood. They clearly see themselves as patriarchs of the whole marina. Good people to know.

When we finally leave Gus and his band of merry men, the restaurant is closed and dark.

I wake several times during the night to big gusts that grab Loon and shake her, but she holds her own.

Morning is clear, pleasant calm alternates with sudden blasts of cold wind. Jonathan finds Gus, who shows him where to find a 2×10 we can use for a gangplank. We no longer have to jump back and forth to the boat, but with all the bouncing there’s some acrobatics to it. And we almost lose the plank in the bucking and rocking.

A message from T says she’s on the way. There’s time to wander to docks to see the neighbors. There are many nice boats, some VERY nice (the Greeks) that are so big I can’t get a photo for scale. Not Saudi Prince big, but still. And a couple of live-aboards and “project” boats. One appears to be the pet project of a former marine, done up like a pirate ship. Looks intimidating, but the resident guard dog really, really wants me to play.

When T arrives, we load up all the gear. Jonathan needs to row his dinghy up the creek. He’ll leave it on shore where he’s having a dock built. We drive around to wait for him. We watch him battle with the wind, but deeper up the creek there’s good shelter from trees along shore. Loon will stay at the marina for now, but eventually will live at her own dock here.

We drop Jonathan off in Alexandria, and get a look at the pilot cutter he’s building in the backyard. The Stone Horse will be good for family adventures while the multi-year project continues. Big projects run in his family. His dad, Jim, who contacted me for this adventure, has built several large boats – the latest a Chesapeake Buy Boat.

Back in November I helped a friend move his new old from North Carolina to Maryland. I met him in Hampton to relieve his first crew. They had come through the Dismal Swamp with many adventures, but had to jump ship to meet a tight schedule. Mutual friends got in touch, and with the help of my gracious partner T was able to work out logistics on short notice. Was a fun trip on a fine boat. This leg was from Hampton Roads to Deltaville.

Back in mid-November, I was having coffee in pajamas when I got a message from a fellow sailor and boat builder, Jim. Would I be interested in dropping whatever I was doing to go sailing for a couple of days? Short notice, long story? Apparently, Jim knows me well. I have learned the hard way, however, to ask for a few details before jumping on YES with both feet.

His son Jonathan bought an old Stone Horse down in North Carolina. He is bringing it home to Maryland, and is suddenly short on crew. I know Jonathan from the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival. Seems unlikely, but I mention it to Terri, how it would be fun but not sure how to work it out. Just so happens, says T, she will be in DC in a couple of days and can pick me up at journey’s end. Would be willing to drive me down. Enough details fall into place that thirty-six hours later I am in Hampton Roads, walking the docks with my duffle, looking for a ship.

T graciously got up before daylight to drive me the three hours to the coast. Just after sunrise we find Jonathan and his departing crew unloading gear on the docks from a dinghy, with the Stone Horse *Loon* anchored out in the Hampton River. They look weary, but happy.

Turns out, they had been up even before we were that day. The original plan was to crew with Jonathan the whole way. They left their car in Maryland for the drive back to NC. Weather and mechanical issues delayed things, enough they now had to jump ship here, midway, to get back to NC for other commitments. But their car was still in Maryland, 175 miles away. The past 24 hours were spent renting a car, then driving to Maryland and back to shuttle their own car to Hampton, into which they were now transferring all their gear for the drive to NC and a formal ball that night.

Seems like the land-based part of any boat trip is always the most complicated.

T waved before heading off for breakfast as Jonathan and I rowed out to *Loon*. We raised anchor and motored out into Hampton Roads, and Jonathan caught me up on the current plan.

The [Stone Horse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Horse ) is a solid seagoing cutter rigged sloop, set up well for single-handing. But being new to the boat and her foibles, he knew it was unwise to try and finish the trip alone. Too many things can go wrong. Already the main halyard jammed leaving NC, then the prop on the outboard had to be replaced. Then there’s the weather. Hence the delays so far. Without an extra set of hands to manage the boat while you deal with them, small problems quickly become big problems.

There’s a big weather front coming, too, so we have to go 100 miles in two days and reach port before the bad weather reaches us. Assuming nothing else goes wrong, we’ll have good weather until then, but we have two long days ahead.

We exit Hampton Roads with the USS *Kearsarge* as it leaves the Norfolk base for Denmark. An ambitious assault ship, it looks huge; but an aircraft carrier is half again bigger. We raise sail in the Chesapeake Bay as the *Kearsarge* transits the Bridge Tunnel and disappears over the horizon.

It’s a sparkling clear day, with good wind. Dolphin leap around the bow. By midafternoon the wind dies, and to keep up our pace we crank up the outboard, then raise sails again when the wind returns.

As darkness falls, I can just make out Wolf Trap Lighthouse. I tell Jonathan the story of how it got its name, marking the shoals that grounded a British ship, leading to its capture prior to the Revolutionary War. He steers a course wide around it.

We have hours to go to reach Deltaville and our anchorage for the night. The stars are out and the temperature drops quickly. I pull on all my jackets over double layers and I’m still shivering. Jonathan tries to keep his hands warm in gloves but has to take them off to work the nav app on his phone.

Rounding Gwynns Island it’s hard to pick out the channel markers from the constellation of lights lining the shore, so we rely on GPS to stay the course.

As we approach Deltaville, I tell Jonathan about two harbors I know. One is closer but has a very narrow entrance. The other is wide open, but around Stove Point a couple miles further on. He’s cold and hungry, and the closer one is more protected, so that one gets the nod. As we approach the entrance, it’s obvious the channel is narrower than he expected, and hard to find. There are no lights marking the entrance or the channel, only day markers and buoys.

“You’ve been here, right?” he asks.

“Well sure, but not at night!”

He slows to idle speed and I go forward with a flashlight. I can light the reflective markers just before we have to make the turns, one of which is a full 90 degree right angle. One. Two. Three. Four. Then we’re in, out of the wind in calm water and can finally relax.

At which point, we run aground. There’s a sandbar right in the middle of the harbor. It’s clearly marked on the charts, but you’d never think to look for it. We pull out the oars and work up a good sweat working ourselves off. Then finally we’re anchored.

The Stone Horse, designed for New England waters, came standard with a little wood stove, not much bigger than a soup pot. I brought fist sized chunks of firewood from home, but even these are too big for it. Jonathan has enough shop scraps to use instead. He starts the fire, then begins to whip up a great meal of chicken sautéed in onions and peppers.

Before that’s ready, the wood stove has warmed up the cabin so much it’s driving us out, and we have to open all the hatches and strip down to t-shirts. But after freezing for hours, neither of us complains. We’re warm enough to sit on deck for dinner with a view of the harbor and stars overhead.

Made a trick door under the stairs to get to the basement. Regular door wouldn’t work. Odd size, nothing square, tight space. Used an old window weight from the house and a lever and pulleys to counter balance the door lift, so it will open with finger pressure. Fun and funky, but it works!

It’s flat calm when we shove off from Skidaway Island. Back home in the Chesapeake, watermen called this a “Slick Ca’m” – a slick calm. The front has blown itself out. Beautiful weather is behind it, but the sails will stay furled all day.

We glide past the marine science center where I spent that summer digging in pluff mud, and enter a tangled patchwork of tidal rivers and marsh islands that scribble in the margins between ocean and land. We turn into Moon River, made famous in the song by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer. I once had a toddler from the Creek tribe hold my hand at dusk and walk me to the bluff along this river. There he pointed excitedly at the sky to show me the object of the only word he knew – “Moon” – which he repeated over and over until he was sure I understood. We wondered at it together, a full moon rising through a curtain of Spanish Moss from a silver tray of salt marsh, until dark fell and the dinner bell rang.

Puffy clouds sail through the sky, mirrored in the water. A white columned plantation house is tucked back in the live oaks. A bald eagle stands sentry, pickets with a “no wake” sign.

A newish cruising catamaran falls into formation with us. No one is visible on deck or through tinted windows. Appears to be a bare boat charter or maybe a new captain, like he or she doesn’t know the rules of the road. They follow us around the buoys, through barges and cranes blocking bridges under construction. They don’t answer the radio, and don’t wave when we do. Just a silent scowling profile shadowing us for miles.

At Thunderbolt we make a short detour to loop through the harbor, one of the last working shipyards on this section of coast. It was once a busy commercial shipyard for fisheries and agriculture, but now serves the tony mega-yacht market. When I lived in Savannah, I waited on tables in a waterfront seafood restaurant here. LOTs of wild stories from that time. Like the night the whole staff – waiters, waitresses, chefs, busboys, dishwashers, even the manger – went skinny dipping in a hotel pool on Tybee Island after the all bars closed, until the police came and ran us off. The old restaurant is the only building still here along the waterfront from those days, but now it’s offices for the yacht basin.

Beyond Savannah we come to the Savannah River shipping channel. At this point we cross over the state line from Georgia to South Carolina. I had a friend who paddled this section in his kayak once. He met a container ship coming up the channel from the Atlantic. Realizing he could not get across fast enough, he pulled up along the bank to let it pass. The ship glided slowly by, a low grumble of engines like the ship had indigestion. My friend was ready to turn and cross when he saw the eight foot wake charging down the shore toward him. He braced as the waves lifted his boat high in the air and slammed it down on the rock revetment again and again until the wake finally dissipated. He had to climb up the bank and wait for a passing powerboat to take him back home, the kayak busted to pieces.

We see no ships today, though several we just missed are visible coming and going on AIS. In short order we enter a new state.

The remote southern tip of South Carolina is still empty and wild. Not much here. Our plan is to stop at a tiny marina on Daufuskie Island, the first inhabited island you come to as you head north from Savannah. Though linguists will debate the origin of the name, the story among locals is the name “Daufuskie” derives from the Taino language brought over with slaves in the 1500s by the Spanish, which lived on in the Gullah-Geechee dialect. To the English, it sounded like “dah-fust-key” as in “the first key” – from the Taino word cay for island.

Europeans built plantations before the Revolutionary War and then abandoned them during the Civil War. For centuries the only people who lived on Daufuskie were descendants of the Taino and escaped African slaves. It remained so isolated that the Gullah culture was preserved intact well into the 20th century. When the writer Pat Conroy was hired as a teacher there in the late 60s, the children did not know Kennedy was no longer president.

Though some development has encroached, it’s still a place where modern civilization only has a tentative hold. As we cruise the western shore, Doug can’t raise the marina by phone or radio. Passing our way mark we see why. It appears to have been closed for several years, though still shows up on maps and a web site with contact info. Most of the docks have collapsed. “Well, that explains why they didn’t reply to my email,” says Doug.

Now we have some decisions to make. There aren’t many affordable public facilities on this part of the coast. There aren’t many of any kind.

I try calling my brother for advice. He has lived in this area for years, worked in real estate and owned a boat. He knows of a marina on Hilton Head the locals use, called Shelter Cove. The directions they give are a little . . . odd, however. It will make the longest day of the trip at 46 miles, and too late to change plans by the time we get there. With no better options at hand, we need to give it a try.

We cross Calibogue Sound on a strong outgoing tide and enter a creek that snakes into Hilton Head from the southwest. At first there are nice homes and docks along the shore, most with very nice boats hoisted up on lifts. Gradually those peter out and we pass through a sunken armada of abandoned boats. Some of them were once nice yachts. Some are derelict but still afloat, and seem to have permanent residents on board – shanties festooned with tarps and improvised shelters added on. The creek continues to narrow, even more with the tide now low, so we watch the depth finder and keep going.

Eventually we get to a small gap in the bank that otherwise matches the description Doug got over the phone. Can this be right? The way they described it, and given the high slip number we were given, it sounded huge. But this entrance is just a little S curve in the mud. I could touch muck to starboard and port with the boat hook. We wiggle through, pass a high retaining wall, and it’s like we’ve gone through the gates of Oz.

Secret Maps were critical tools of empires. The Padrón Real was Spain's secret official master map in the 1500s, kept by the Casa de Contratación in Seville. Ship pilots had to use government copies and report new discoveries so the map was constantly updated by leading cartographers. It covered a wall in a guarded room built just for the map, with a staff to care for it. Intentional "map traps" were flaws added to copies for royal pilots to catch thieves and forgeries.
