Being able to store the birthday of the user is useful metadata for the system to have in general. This is something that is needed to have regardless of any regulations. There are already other PII stored. Additionally there isn't any "Verification" mechanism in the PR you linked or proposed at all.

The Linux circlejerk has a "Great Man/Company theory" problem.

Every time there is an issue, they all go around clinging to the one company that "finally" will put some resources into fixing them. Endlessly hyping them up and elevating them to a deity status.

It happened with Canonical in the past and how it was "single handedly fixing GNOME".

More recently its Valve and how "they have graced us with gaming and fixing Wayland"

Finally, I had not talked about this in public nor was going to before reaching out to the asahi team. We've been talking about different to addressing this issue among Flatpak/runtime developers for a while and wanted to explore the different solutions once I had access to an asahi machine again.

Likewise you could have asked why shipping an extension as a distro package and using that flatpak-builder manifest is a dead end and how it would explode ;)

Additionally, we could be looking at any factor/number/version you need, be it uabi, kernel or completely different one. You already control what version of mesa, kernel and flatpak you ship so it can always be kept working in that sense. Just that it will need a heads up to rebuild the extension against the new identifier but otherwise the update will work seamless and will only have to ship and build it once.

Having each distro try to build and ship a driver extension for each Runtime and Runtime versions is certainly not the way to go as well and it's much easier to go wrong as you saw and a lot harder to debug as now you have to debug each homegrown distro stack as well. Host managed extensions can work for specific usecases but I don't think it's better in this one and especially since mesa links against a bunch of other things.

In general I don't think there would be a problem with teaching flatpak itself about a temporary way to resolve asahi things and pull them automatically. It doesn't even have to be merged, you could only ship a patched flatpak binary on the distro side. It would be more of a way for us (runtime developers) to figure out how to publish working asahi extensions.

Hi,

This workaround is breaking applications if they happen to be using a runtime which won't match/mount the `org.freedesktop.Platform//{22.08, 23.08}` versions

What happens is that flatpak will happily only try to mount that driver, as it's an env var not configuration, and your apps will end up without a GL extension mounted at all.

This means that any flathub-beta application using 24.08 or gnome-nightly are currently broken due to the FLATPAK_GL_DRIVERS override.
