Where I grew up the fox squirrels were the typical neighborhood squirrels. Where I live now I only find them on the trails.

Gray squirrels are the neighborhood squirrels here and I'm not sure I'd seen one prior to moving here. Couldn't believe how scrawny they were, lol.

I didn't know that Canada geese & mallards ate fish until I witnessed it the 1st time. Shad are too big to swallow so they shred them w/ their bills. They frequently let go of the fish to get a better grip so theft attempts are constant.

When the river freezes, I often find less common (for me) species mingled w/ the Canada geese/mallards at the dam. That's why I (unlike sane people, lol) am a fan of cold winters 🤷‍♂️ 🥶.

I'm not certain that the river froze last year. If it did it was only briefly. Unlike everyone else I get excited when it gets this cold, lol. This is when I come across the less common waterfowl species as they gather together with the usual Canada geese and mallards in the open water at the base of the dam. Along with the eagles it's a lot of fun👍

They're pretty remarkable little birds and quite entertaining ...

Friend had a Cooper's perched in the tree across the street. It was making such a racket that neighbors were coming out to see what the heck was going on, lol. Pretty sure it was a recent fledgling still trying to get its parents to feed it.

Too cold to photograph but did make it down to the river briefly. The great thing about this weather is that the river freezes. Found 7-8 bald eagles hanging out around the open water below the dam. I just need that windchill above -5°F so the frostbite danger is lower and I'll be back 👍

When I lowered my lens I saw the big one up on the wire across the street. Could have easily walked by w/o seeing it, lol. A friend lives in that neighborhood and there are always raptors around👍

The first time I saw birds take baths in snow I was like, "that makes sense".

In extreme cold I've watched Canada geese violently thrash around in the snow. At 1st I thought the goose was having a seizure and was weirded out till I looked at the photos later and realized it was trying to knock off the ice that had built up on its wings while it waited out the cold on the frozen river.

Had heard that too a few yrs ago (nature documentary?) & was indulging in a bit of anthropomorphism, lol. Had always wondered about bird's feet in the cold prior to learning what they do. It's a really cool adaptation👍.

Now (& seriously not trying to look precocious, lol) I've seen bird's eat snow (especially sparrows and smaller birds) on many occasions. I just assumed people knew that 🤷‍♂️ though I'm not in the least bit an expert.

Not a problem. I understand and your response to me gently chiding you for adopting an extraordinarily patronizing tone regarding my statements and experience is not at all surprising. We engineers are a simple people slavishly devoted to mechanistic thinking and I am clearly out my depth. Perhaps, in the future, every engineer will be paired with a philosopher to keep us on the straight and narrow, hmm?

Your response has been "it isn't". You state that in your paper "It should be a core part of your scientific training". I stated it was. It's definitely possible my experience in my degree programs as well as my work in academia and the private sector was atypical. Your reply suggests you don't have much respect for your colleague's judgement and that experience varies drastically from my own experience. But suggesting their behavior is 100-110% seems to clash with your critique of their "noithing-but-ism" but, of course, anecdotal information is limited in it's capacity to model reality.

I guess I'm a bit more worried that some think that "nothing-but-ism" is a common practice in the sciences. But I think that may be the part of the disconnect between philosophy and the sciences. Scientists and engineers are taught to to keep an open mind and understand the limitations of our constructs and philosophers are there to remind us to do so.

I think engineers understand the limitations of their own models but mechanistic models can produce perfectly acceptable results and there's nothing philosophically wrong with using them. While we should always be cognizant of what is or may be missing I also think your view of engineer's may be a bit outdated.

I'm a little confused. All that you describe as how science should be is exactly how I encountered science when I received my engineering degrees. It is how I understand science, it is what I was taught, and I don't have a degree in philosophy. I'm not clear on some of your discussion of "levels" and while models can not produce the "truth" what they model correctly is often far more important than the assumptions that make them flawed🤷‍♂️.
