There's also something about having them on the same side, I think. The idea being that if you look at a cross section of the trunk, the sap flows in a ring all around the perimeter and the amount you're taking is proportional to the amount of that circle you're distrupting. I learned of this because I tried to make pine sap adhesive from the trees in my yard. I was walking around looking at the trees, noticing a lot of mold, but also a lot of drippy sap coming from where I had trimmed lower branches the year before.
