The Mission Inn had fallen on hard times and was starting to rent out rooms to UCR students. The next couple of rolls were taken to show the accommodations and the architecture in which students could expect to be living.

One: I continue to have fun exploring the use of D-23. My wife requested a photo of her white heirloom roses in bloom, so I jumped at the chance to test highlight separation in very flat lighting. The gamma was turned way up here, but the gradation came along very nicely -- it's all there. The performance of the old Mamiya 135mm lens (a tessar design) was also gratifying.

I'm searching for a word that sums up my esthetic for new b&w film photos. I'm trying to emulate the work of the great pre-digital photographers using mechanical equipment and developing the film myself, but then I'm scanning the negatives, rendering the positive images on a computer using techniques similar to those of the darkroom, and exhibiting them through social media. Would "neoclassical" do it? Could we make "neoclassical photography" stand for all that?

I'm reminded again of the insane amount of effort that went into arranging the hair of women like this one and the admin and the IHOP waitress. And their constant fear that something would mess it up and make them start over.

The office of the campus literary magazine occupied the space right outside the darkrooms, so I saw a lot of the two editors: Vicki Hearne (Lehrman) and Richard Maxwell. Richard later became editor of the Highlander; he had some kind of medical condition that eventually killed him, and Vicki was finally done in by the ever-present cigarettes.

I had thought that this roll was taken following the protest that I showed yesterday, but I realize now that it must have been taken at some kind of preliminary meeting at a local park.

I like this roll well enough to spend the next couple of days showing the photos. Bear in mind that the summer daytime temperature in Riverside is often in excess of 100F, and that's what it looks like here.

I've been struggling to find a word that replaces "to print" in talking about creating a final positive image from the negative image that I get from a scan. I used to say, e.g., "when I printed this, I dodged the faces." The best that occurs to me now is to borrow "render," making it "when I rendered this" (without further explanation, relying on the reader to figure out my meaning). Does anyone have a better idea? Have I missed something?

Ladies and gentlemen, the Wat-Air Roll Film Washer.

You know how if you wash your film in running water, it gets covered with tiny bubbles unless you take it out of the wash and put it back in every few minutes? (You knew that, right?)

This baby sends up a continuously agitated stream of large bubbles through the reels that prevent that. I've added an adapter here to the original garden hose thread to fit it to my kitchen faucet.

Why isn't someone making these?

A few days after commencement every year, the local community holds a three-day festival to celebrate the departure of the students, beginning with a big parade. But once you've found the right base exposure for a given set of materials and lighting setup, you are careful enough in taking and processing your negatives that you will soon be able to make a good guess at print exposure just by looking at the negative, and at that point, the most efficient (easiest/laziest) way will be to make one test with small increments on other side of that guess. Doubling is too coarse to find the exact right exposure.

But this is why the metaphor is "burning in." The negative can take a lot more of this than the output of a scanner can.

I've never found it necessary to use log exposure times for the test. After the first few successful prints, you will know the center of the possible range by inspection and then you can just use 5-second intervals (say) with that estimate in the middle.

"Candid" photos of the reception, held at the house of the bride's parents. (I also got everyone outside into the light and shot a roll of the usual formal group arrangements on Ektachrome; the slides were, of course, kept by the family. After almost 60 years, I'm pretty sure that the prints made from these negatives are in better shape than the slides!)

At our Analog Photography Club yesterday, Jason (who took a class in this at George Eastman House) explained the details of the Edwardian-era collodion chloride process for making POP (printing-out paper) that will last just about forever and how to tell portraits printed on this stuff from the much more common gelatin-silver and albumen-silver alternatives. It's simple: the CC prints are the ones that have phenomenal detail (because the coating is thinner) and show no signs of deterioration.
