The Fediverse is a network of thousands of independent servers, running lots of different kinds of software. Some of them are Mastodon servers, some of them are Pixelfed servers, some of them are PeerTube servers... there are dozens of different kinds!

But all of them are connected together into a single social network called the Fediverse. You don't need to be on the same server to follow and interact with someone, in fact you don't even need to be on the same type of server. People on Mastodon can interact with people on Pixelfed etc.

There is no algorithm on Pixelfed, it's entirely up to you to decide what goes in your timeline. One of the best ways to fill your timeline with stuff you're interested in is to follow hashtags:

1. Search for a hashtag remembering to include # at the beginning

2. Choose the hashtag you want from the list of suggestions

3. Click the "Follow" button at the top

Once you've followed a hashtag, posts with that hashtag will gradually start to appear in your timeline even if you don't follow the people who posted them.

You can repeat this process to build up a wide range of topics in your timeline, and it's also a really good way to discover new accounts.

If you want to keep track of your followed hashtags go to Account Settings > Relationships > Hashtags

If you've tried to send a DM on Pixelfed and you get an error message saying "You need to wait a bit before you can DM another account", don't worry. Your DMs will start working 72 hours after you've joined a server, and the error message will stop appearing.

Apparently this was introduced to stop spammers, although since then other anti-spam measures have been introduced and there's some discussion that it might be removed.

You don't need an app to use Pixelfed! All of Pixelfed's features are available entirely through your server's website, which you can use on your computer, phone or tablet. In fact the website tends to have more features than the apps!

You can also optionally install the website as a web app on your phone or tablet, which makes it behave like an app (including full screen mode and notifications) but have all the features of the website.
