Like most songbirds, this ground foraging warbler is in a decades-long decline, but is not considered endangered. This little guy didn&#39;t make it easy to get a clear shot, but, hey, you take what you can get. <br/><br/>He was one of my relatively few observations for this weekend&#39;s City Nature Challenge. The Challenge ends today, but so far, in NYC, 12,701 observations were made, comprising 1,399 species, by 665 observers. For Brooklyn, there were 2,512 observations of 670 species by 166 observers. Fox Sparrows (speaking of the red morph) are not uncommon in our region in the winter, but they are woodland birds that breed in the boreal north, and look for dense thickets here. Since I started keeping track (four years ago), I&#39;ve never seen them in our yard. I was was pretty set on ignoring it, but the color, movement and form were off, so I stopped and looked. Although abundant, this is another shorebird in steep decline due to habitat loss and pollution. These birds have a polyandrous mating system in which females court and mate with several males, and defend the mating territories, while males mostly (not exclusively like Jacanas) care for the nest and young. They are prominently found around freshwater wetlands, although they can be found in salt-marsh environments, particularly during migration. I had never watched them foraging, but this bird was doing so oblivious to my presence as it buffed up for migration. It was stalking and pouncing on its prey, like a Green Heron.
