I watched a guy eat oatmeal for close to an hour the other day.

I was at a café working, writing, having a coffee, the usual. A guy sat next to me on the couch. He looked like a serious nomadic traveler, with a big duffel bag and a backpacking backpack. He ordered a coffee and an oatmeal.

He took close to an hour to eat it. No phone, no book, no friend to talk to, no podcast, no headphones. Just him, his oatmeal and his coffee.

Meanwhile I was writing, editing videos, answering messages, listening to music and drinking my coffee, all at once. Always rushing, always multitasking.

The last couple of months I've noticed how much smoother life is when we only do one thing, or even nothing at all. Lying in the grass, lying in bed, walking. Letting the mind drift off into that peace.

I don't know what he was going through. Maybe something tough, and that's why he was staring at the wall. But watching someone do the thing I overthink all the time really struck me.

It's also why I think we get our best ideas in the shower. It's one of the last places that's still free of all distractions. 10 minutes of just nothing.

So that's my takeaway from the guy eating oatmeal: I want to keep giving myself room for nothingness.

Ratio are real, and beautiful and one could even say designed by God. Numbers, bases, and measurements of time are not. They are useful and God gave us the ability to create them to perceive his creation, but they hold zero divine significance

I’ve been a digital nomad for almost 5 years:

And one thing that be reflected on recently is: 1) I want a family one day and 2) I REALLY appreciated my family not moving countries every 6 months during my childhood.

The nomad lifestyle has served its purpose for me thus far, and maybe there’s a version of it in the future that can work alongside a family (such as slow and period travel)

But one thing is clear, a place to truly call a home base will always be needed.

Also, anthropologically speaking, a family always on the move was probably some kind of danger ‼️

I challenge you to walk as slow as possible.

Ever since I was very young, I've been easily irritated by slow walkers. Sidewalk, school hallway, the mall, doesn't matter. Stuck behind someone walking slow relative to what I'm used to would drive me crazy.

Recently I was on a walk with no particular destination. Normally when I walk I'm going to the grocery store or a cafe. But this one, there was nowhere to go. It was after dinner, cafes were closed, I didn't need groceries. I was just on a walk. Honestly a little stressed from work, tired, needed to let go of the thoughts on my mind.

I was walking my normal fast pace, I always walk relatively fast, and then it clicked with me that I had no destination.

So I slowed down. And slowed down further. And slowed it down to the point where if somebody was observing me it wouldn't even look like I was walking. Just stumble one step and the next.

The reason I challenge you to do this is it made me realize how much of my life I am always trying to rush. And there's a big difference between rushing something and doing something quickly. There's that quote:

"slow is smooth and smooth is fast."

It usually gets applied to throwing a baseball, or sprinting in practice.

But whether it's me walking, or me rushing video edits, or me trying to make a meal as fast as possible. I need to start asking myself: why am I rushing everything?! What good does it do me to have my steak and potatoes done in 13 minutes instead of 21? What good does it do if I fold my laundry in 2.5 minutes instead of 6?

Slow down.

This is mostly speaking to me. But I'm sharing it because maybe somebody else out there also walks very fast. Also rushes work. Also rushes meals. Walking is an easy one to grasp, everyone does it, so that's where you can try it.

So next time you walk, whatever the purpose: slow down. A lot. A third or a quarter of the speed. And see how you feel, and see what comes to mind.

I've lived out of my car for a few months at a time while working online, and here is one of the best Productivity and frugal hacks:

Instead of working at cafes and spending $10, maybe even $20. To just sit and work there, use the public libraries.

This did two things for me.:

1) I had to now get my work done within a certain window of time, no procrastinating until 10 PM, the work had to be done now before the library closed.

2) Getting a coffee at a cafe now felt like a leisurely experience rather than entering a pseudo-workspace. And I cut my cafe expenses by at least 80%.

Work got done. Money got saved.

Why do we attach a negative association to doing dishes or making dinner, but positive association to playing video games?

Both require time.
Both require active attention.
Both, especially with video games and with cooking, require active work, participation, and focus.

Part of it could just be gamification. Video games have that by design. And you can attach gamification to dishes or cooking. I've done it:

"I'm going to give myself 5 minutes to clean every dirty dish."
"I'm going to give myself 25 minutes to make an amazing dinner."

You learn to gamify it the way you would a "real" game.

But here's the main point I want to get to: sometimes gamifying is detrimental, because it turns everything into a rush. And rushing isn't necessarily the same as fast. Sometimes there's a time and place to just slow down.

That goes both ways, for the things we positively associate, and the things we negatively associate.

There's a time and place for a movie, to let go, to unwind, to let a story or a lesson wash over you passively. And the same can be said for doing dishes or cooking dinner. You don't have to treat it like a game to find joy in it. You can just find peace in it, in the slow and active process of scrubbing a pot, or making a pasta for the people you love.

So all of this is to say (and I'm saying it to myself too) learn to question why we positively and negative associations with different activities when at the end of the day, both contain the same attributes. Both need time. Both need active attention and active work. Both can be made dreadful, and both can be made good.

Lesson: doing dishes is a good thing

Which I understand from a business perspective to maintain a high customer satisfaction. But in bakeries, it will be accepted that once things run out they run out.

For 2 years I dumpster dove for 99%+ of my food, here's what I learned:

Over those years I ate hundreds of bananas, onions, bell peppers, packaged foods, hummus, granola bars, and pastries. I was vegan at the time but I also found smoked salmon, chicken fried rice, microwavable meals, prosciutto, fresh and aged cheeses. The list goes on.

And NONE of it was spoiled. The worst you'd ever find was a stepped-on tomato, or heavily bruised bananas or potatoes.

The waste was on the magnitude of a 100 lbs+ per grocery store per day of perfectly edible food in the dumpster. With roughly ten large grocery stores in the Flagstaff, AZ area, that was well over 1,000 lbs per day.

And this is in a small town in one state of one country.

This is a nationwide and even global problem that very few people recognize the scale of. We're all told to not waste our food. We feel bad for throwing out a spoiled apple. Valid concerns, but none of it compares to what's going on behind the scenes.

So I can tell you firsthand this is a bigger conversation than figuring out which crop is the most or least water and resource intensive. Something I find infuriating when I hear environmentalists finding more and more false reasons to put down animal agriculture. There are constructive and destructive ways to farm just about anything.

But when the entire food system is built on a foundation that questions the efficiency of farming practices rather than the waste going on, these conversations are really just actionless politics.

We could have the most water-efficient grains on earth, but if every grocery store is dumping a literal month's supply of food for 1 person every single day, water efficiency is the least of our problems.

And there are countless uses for this food beyond human consumption. Chickens and pigs would absolutely thrive on a large part of what gets thrown out. For the more garbage-tier foods, at the very least they could be decomposed into worms and grubs for birds like chickens to eat, those critters break down even the worst of it into constituent parts the chickens can actually digest and stay healthy on.

And I think I know why this problem is allowed to persist, not because of political reasons necessarily, but because social norms. Back in the day when a certain fruit or vegetable or meat would run out of stock, that was just what it was. You would have to come back tomorrow or whenever the next shipment arrives next week. People wouldn't be starving, just the availability for preferred foods would be low. Out of carrots -> we'll do potatoes. Out of beef -> we'll do chicken.

But now we live in a world where the reputation of grocery stores plummets if they run out of items, so instead of people needing to conform to the laws of nature and agriculture, we have to plunder the Earth in order to satisfy the norms that have been created of indefinite abundance.

And I think bakeries really get this right, at least real bakeries. It's normal and accepted that certain fresh pastries or baguettes will run out mid to late morning every day. And we all just accept this, that if you want the food you're after, you're going to have to get there earlier. I truly believe this is the core of the problem. But few if any grocery stores will ever make real change around it because their reputation would drop.

All that said, and as gross as it sounds, I'd encourage you to at least take a peek into your local grocery store dumpster. I promise you won't get dirty, unless you want to literally dive in like I have. Depending on the day and time, it's very possible you'll find well over 100 pounds of fresh, perfectly healthy, ready-to-eat food.

It's been years since I've actively been dumpster-diving, Maybe I should give it a whirl again. My food expenses were around $10 a month at some point because of how little I had to buy.

I'm Andres, 28 years old, American, currently in Flagstaff, AZ but moving to the Basque country before the end of the year 🇪🇸

Been living out of a backpack for 4 years, traveled to 20 countries, and have been running my content agency helping athletic coaches build brands. This has been paying the bills 💻

5 things I'm working on:

1. 🎞️ Continuing to grow Real Reels Academy through our Skool community and growing our high ticket client base. Recently brought on a friend from Sweden as my business partner (link in bio to see more)

2. 🟧 Orange pilling anyone wanting to know more. Being 28, most of my friends are facing the uncertainties regarding the future of the world and economy.

Also having conversations with local businesses that use Square to encourage them to accept Bitcoin. So far 2 really solid conversations at a food co-op and a chocolate store.

3. 👨‍🌾 The farm fund. Moving to Northern Spain this fall. We will be renting, but my eyes are firmly set on owning property both in Spain and the USA eventually.

My girlfriend and I worked on organic farms last year, and we've both fell in love with having a plot of land with a few dozen animals and building within a local community and economy. I'm a builder at heart so I like to do leather work, wood work, or general labor whenever I can.

4. ⏱️ A sub 4:20 mile. My best was a 4:34 in high school. And I ran an equivalent 4:28 in college. I weigh about ten to fifteen kilos more now. But I'm also no longer vegan. So it's possible. This goal I have been putting the least effort in in recent weeks, time to get back on it.

5. ✝️ My faith. It's something I neglected and at times just didn't believe whatsoever for most of my life. But after having been an adult for a decade, making hundreds of mistakes, some minor and some grave, I know now more than ever that for me personally, a life without faith in something greater than the material world leads me towards destruction.

There is so much more to my story, vegan for 5 years, lead to hypothyroidism. Was raw carnivore for a bit. Have experimented with every diet under the sun before concluding that they all hold some truth.

I've lived out of a car for months at a time. I dumpster dove for 100% of my food for nearly 2 years.

1. I ran cold 24/7 as a vegan. My hands and feet were cold even when it was warm out. It got so bad that before class presentations or a date: I'd start shivering and would have to take warm baths beforehand. Within days of eating animal fats and highly bioavailable protein/nutrients, my body felt like a furnace. Since then I've gone on night walks in the cold and surfed for hours in cold water and been more than fine.

2. My brain fog was gone within 1 night of sleep. I'd had it for about my last 18 months as a vegan. The morning after my first day eating meat again, I woke up feeling like my brain had just gotten a massive software update. Background noise was quiet. I'd heard stories like this and thought they were placebo. Maybe...but whatever it is, it worked.

3. I'd had back acne for YEARS, and it was gone within months of eating mostly animal fats. That's the opposite of what I was told would happen in my university nutrition classes.

🌮 Taco Bell employees: Most of them are clearly doing this job because they have to, or until they can do what they actually love.

You can feel the energy is elsewhere when you walk in, sluggish and distracted.

🍔 In-N-Out employees: They LOVE what they do.

Their dream was never to be a world class burgers chef, but there is something about this place, maybe the owners or the culture, that lets them actually be present in what's in front of them.

They have learned the art of loving whatever is immediately put in front of them. The Taco Bell employees, through no fault of their own, have been put in an environment that makes this more difficult

The In and Out employees enjoy the camaraderie, the action, and doing great work for the sake of work.

Both are in the same job category.

One produces people trying to escape.
One produces people who showed up.
