Autistici/Inventati’s shutdown left a pretty obvious question behind: what happens when infrastructure movements depend on disappears?

We spent the last couple weeks turning that question into a practical field course on autonomous movement infrastructure.

This is not a guide telling every collective to buy a VPS and become its own ISP. It’s about understanding the systems we already depend on well enough to map them, maintain them, back them up, move them, preserve what matters, and pass that knowledge on.

The course has 13 guide sections and 12 practical lessons. You’ll map the dependencies behind a real project, investigate DNS, SSH into a disposable Linux machine, put something online, inspect what you exposed, make and restore a real backup, destroy and rebuild a service, migrate it, stop being the only administrator, preserve published work, troubleshoot a local network, experiment with another networking model, and teach somebody else what you learned.

The point is not to memorize commands.

The unit of resilience isn’t the machine. It’s the person who can reproduce the machine.

Nobody can currently rely on WordPress admin access, so one practical option is HTTrack, a free tool that can download a static copy of a public website to your computer.

Give it your NoBlogs homepage URL, let it crawl the site, then check the downloaded copy and make sure your posts, pages, images and files are actually there.

Then make another copy of that backup somewhere else.

Important: HTTrack does NOT preserve the WordPress database, user accounts, plugins or admin backend. It preserves the public-facing site. If A/I provides an official export or recovery method later, save that too.

After preservation, the next steps are: (more detailed instructions coming soon)

- get your own domain if you do not already have one
- choose a new host (recommendations incoming)
- set up a fresh WordPress site or other publishing platform
- import any official NoBlogs export if one becomes available
- otherwise use the static HTTrack copy as the source for rebuilding old posts and pages
- keep independent backups going forward, separate from your host

The priority right now is simple:

Preserve first.
Migrate second.

If your collective has years of writing, statements, history, documents or organizing material on NoBlogs, do not assume it will remain reachable indefinitely just because you can still see it today.

A/I may be ending. The story is nowhere near over.

For twenty-five years, #AutisticiInventati showed what it could mean for movements to build and control their own communications infrastructure. Its loss should not send everyone searching for the next single service to replace it.

It should send us looking in a hundred directions.

In Boise, the Boise Autonomous Solidarity Hub is experimenting with one of them. Boise Autonomous Solidarity (npub1p8u…xc33) has put a small independent publication on NomadNet, a system running over Reticulum rather than relying solely on the conventional web. It has articles, archives, submissions and contact functions, reachable through a cryptographic network destination instead of an ordinary domain.

That is not the answer. That's what makes it interesting.

Other projects are trying other things: cooperative infrastructure, self-managed servers, RSS, mirrors, print, radio, downloadable archives, federated publishing and networks that barely resemble the commercial web at all.

We don't need to find another A/I. We need to understand how to build a thousand different pieces of what made A/I possible.

Nineteen days before the U.S. sanctions deadline, Autistici/Inventati is shutting down.

For twenty-five years, A/I built infrastructure for people who understood that privacy, autonomy and resistance require more than good intentions. Now a government order has made keeping that infrastructure alive untenable.

There is grief in this. There should also be fury.

Because fascism does not arrive only as boots in the street. Sometimes it arrives as a designation, a compliance deadline, a terrified service provider, a bank account that suddenly stops working. Bureaucracy has always been one of authoritarianism’s favorite costumes. The paperwork looks terribly respectable while the walls close in.

And this cannot remain a problem for “the nerds.” People organizing in every sphere need to understand what autonomous infrastructure means, why it matters, and what happens when we leave it to a tiny number of exhausted technical collectives to keep the lights on for everyone else.

We need to become the thousand servers. Now.

If one autonomous project can be isolated, there should be ten more behind it. A hundred. A thousand. This should be the moment radical hosting, federated services, community servers, privacy infrastructure and collectively controlled networks begin flourishing, not retreating. Build them in basements, social centers, infoshops, collectives, cooperatives and wherever else people can keep a machine humming and a cable plugged into the wall.

The lesson cannot be that autonomous infrastructure was too dangerous to maintain.

The lesson has to be that we did not have nearly enough of it.

We ❤️ A/I. We are heartbroken to see it end this way. And we refuse to treat its shutdown as the end of the idea it spent twenty-five years proving was possible.

Sabot’s Facebook and Instagram accounts may remain online for now. A collective decision about whether to delete them entirely has not been made.

But I, personally, have made my own decision: I’m no longer going to spend my time feeding our reporting, organizing work, photographs, graphics, or attention into Meta’s platforms. If other members want to post here they have access and are able to do so. This was not an easy decision and we may return. But for now I think it is important and I hope you follow us off these platforms.

If you’ve followed us here, thank you. Seriously. But this is where our active presence on these platforms ends.

Sabot isn’t going anywhere. We’re publishing more than ever. We just don’t need to keep pouring our work into corporate platforms designed to trap communities inside somebody else’s infrastructure, harvest their attention, and decide which parts of the world they’re permitted to see.

Independent media should have independent infrastructure. Communities should be able to find each other without asking Mark Zuckerberg’s algorithms for permission.

So come find us elsewhere.

8/31/2026 9:41 AM - In an August 31 statement attributed to PIR, the registry confirmed that it suspended the affected .ORG domain after it was identified on OFAC’s Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List.

“Public Interest Registry (PIR) is a U.S.-based organization and is required to comply with U.S. law, including applicable sanctions. In this case, the affected .ORG domain name was identified on the U.S. Treasury Department’s OFAC Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) List, and PIR is legally mandated to suspend it. The registrant of the domain has a right to challenge the designation determination. PIR has no involvement in that process. Should the registrant be successful in such a proceeding, the suspension would be lifted.”

PIR did not identify the specific statutory or regulatory provision it believes mandates suspension, say whether OFAC directly instructed it to act, explain whether A/I or its registrar received notice, or describe any internal process for reviewing the suspension. Its statement indicates that restoration depends upon successfully challenging the underlying designation rather than appealing directly to PIR.

Open Letter: Communications Infrastructure Is Not Terrorism
Defend Autistici/Inventati and the right to build resistant communication

On August 26, 2026, the United States designated the Italian volunteer technology collective Autistici/Inventati as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and placed it on the Specially Designated Nationals list under Executive Order 13224. A temporary authorization covering certain wind-down transactions ends at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on September 25.

Autistici/Inventati has provided noncommercial email, websites, mailing lists, Noblogs and other communications services since 2001. It emerged from Italian hacklabs, autonomous media and social movements. Its infrastructure was built in response to censorship, covert surveillance and server seizures. It minimizes identifying data, uses distributed systems and treats privacy as a condition of political participation rather than a product.

The United States' public announcements point to material and organizations that allegedly used A/I infrastructure. They do not publicly show that A/I planned the cited actions, selected targets, directed users or authored hosted material. The designation therefore raises a question extending far beyond one collective: can maintaining privacy-preserving communications infrastructure for disfavored movements itself be treated as terrorism?

That theory threatens independent hosts, encrypted communications services, radical libraries, movement archives, publishers and small volunteer projects everywhere. It invites banks, registrars, hosting companies and technology providers to sever relationships first and ask legal questions later. It turns data minimization into suspicion, privacy into concealment and infrastructure into guilt by association.

Large commercial platforms are ordinarily distinguished from the speech and conduct of their users through intermediary-liability principles, including Section 230 in the United States. Those protections are not absolute and do not override sanctions law. That is precisely why this designation is so consequential: executive sanctions power can impose economic isolation without resolving the ordinary question of whether a provider is legally responsible for third-party material in court.

Autistici/Inventati is not politically neutral, and neither are many of the publications, libraries, unions and civil-liberties organizations that may sign this letter. Political affinity, however, is not operational control. Providing an email account, publishing platform or server is not the same act as planning everything a user may later say or do.
We therefore call for:

The immediate revocation or prompt, transparent review of the designation, with publication of the factual and legal basis sufficient for meaningful public scrutiny and challenge.

A clear distinction between providing communications infrastructure and directing the conduct of its users. Privacy, encryption, pseudonymity and refusal to retain unnecessary identifying data must not be treated as evidence of terrorism.

Protection for independent reporting, research, archiving and public advocacy. Journalists, libraries, researchers and community archivists must be able to document this history without being treated as extensions of a designated entity.

Resistance to institutional over-compliance. Banks, registrars, hosts, certificate providers and technology companies should disclose relevant restrictions, provide notice where lawful and avoid suppressing material or relationships beyond what the law actually requires.

A public response from digital-rights, free-expression and civil-liberties institutions. The targeting of autonomous infrastructure cannot be allowed to become a precedent through silence.
We do not ask every signer to endorse every A/I user, publication or political position. We ask signers to defend a foundational distinction: communications infrastructure is not identical to the speech or conduct transmitted through it.

The purpose of economic designation is isolation. Our answer is independent, informed and disciplined solidarity: preserve the public record, examine the government's claims, resist over-compliance and defend the ability of movements to communicate without surrendering themselves to corporate or state surveillance.
