I have spent the last month discussing the price of bitcoin and want to pull back and discuss macro elements and updates surrounding bitcoin to show that, although a price of around $90,000 may feel like the world is ending (to some), the reality is the adoption curve is only ramping up.</p> <p><strong>The knee is bending.</strong></p> <p>TradFi and the legacy financial world continue to bow to the emergence of bitcoin.</p> <p>Less than 1.5 years ago, the CEO of Vanguard, the “Father of Index funds,” went on record to say, “We don’t plan to offer crypto ETFs, and we aren’t going to change our minds.” Just this week, their new CEO said that <a href="https://www.theblock.co/post/380997/vanguard-clients-trade-funds-crypto-bitcoin-xrp-solana-starting-week-bloomberg?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email"><strong>Vanguard will switch policies</strong></a> and allow ETFs and mutual funds that primarily hold cryptocurrencies to trade on their platform. Vanguard services 50 million brokerage accounts and oversees $11 trillion in assets, and has now opened its doors to crypto.</p> <p><a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/news/bank-of-america-backs-crypto-allocation?utm_source=the-arc.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-knee-is-bending"><strong>Bank of America</strong></a> has updated its recommendations for its wealth management clients and now recommends clients allocate 1% to 4% of their portfolios to crypto and highlight bitcoin ETFs as the focal point. The guidance oversees Merrill, the Private Bank, and Merrill Edge, which gives over 15,000 advisers the ability to discuss digital assets. As a reminder, before this clearance, advisers were <strong>not allowed to discuss</strong> the assets. Additionally, starting January 5th, 2026, the bank’s CIO will begin formal coverage of four bitcoin ETFs: Bitwise’s BITB, Fidelity’s FBTC, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust, and BlackRock’s IBIT. This Bank of America change comes on the heels of <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/morgan-stanley-advises-btc-allocation?utm_source=the-arc.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-knee-is-bending"><strong>Morgan Stanley </strong></a>recommending a 2% to 4% allocation to clients in October.</p> <p>BlackRock has announced that its bitcoin ETF <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/IBIT?utm_source=the-arc.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-knee-is-bending"><em>$IBIT ( ▼ 3.47% )</em></a> is its most profitable ETF <a href="https://x.com/EricBalchunas/status/1975237426936520717?s=20">by a large amount.</a></p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/77904a2e6b8cb20ac80d9a6a3ebcf9293174dc06f9a25fb7060b3353f784c3f2.png" alt=""/></p> <p>BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has also largely emerged as a <a href="https://x.com/BitcoinArchive/status/1996588153688236250?s=20">leading spokesman</a> for Bitcoin. He recently discussed that sovereign wealth funds are accumulating bitcoin and do not view their positions as trades; they view them as long-term strategies.</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/3be079df0137e0f966acff42b4baf6823b5ce2fc9aa7b6172a233bef95fa0149.png" alt=""/></p> <p>The Harvard endowment has also more than doubled their position in their $IBIT as disclosed by their recent 13F filing for Q3. In the world of bitcoin, you either own bitcoin or you get left behind. There is no better form of sound money or better form of a store of value. As our currencies and other assets are programmed to inflate, bitcoin is programmed to become more scarce. These adoption cycles do not happen overnight. We are roughly 15 years into the bitcoin experiment, and legacy institutions are continuing to bend the knee. Every sense of expectation has seemingly been tempered, while the opposite thought has occurred.</p> <p>October was supposed to be Uptober, yet we received the worst <a href="https://x.com/JoeConsorti/status/1983987410309611840?s=20">October</a> for bitcoin in years.</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/7b60f52c088bba0b454d79481ed2096095a68c496a1b6b4a92a159f0571c2ad1.png" alt=""/></p> <p>We also experienced the highest liquidation event in crypto history.</p> <p>November is a week in, and bitcoin has dipped below $100,000 for the first time since <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/04/bitcoins-november-sell-off-worsens-as-investors-take-risk-off-on-worries-about-the-ai-trade-.html?utm_source=the-arc.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=an-ode-to-bitcoin-pricing#:~:text=Tuesday%20marked%20the%20first%20time,Tuesday%20to%20trade%20at%20$3,275."><strong>late June</strong></a>. The current sentiment in the bitcoin world is “<a href="https://x.com/TheMoonCarl/status/1986685281937072459?s=20">Extreme fear.</a> ”</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/eff8b1d8ba2204fdc81716c654bd42c2a9ab1a780555fb96cc50853fc878b030.png" alt=""/></p> <p>Ego and overextending yourself are what make people have “extreme fear” when it comes to bitcoin being priced at $100,000. If you dollar cost average and live within your means, $100,000 per bitcoin is a blessing.</p> <p>For reasons like this, there has never been a more important time to understand bitcoin. Education is key.</p> <p>If you cannot defend or discuss why you hold bitcoin, as in explain your investment thesis, then there is no reason why you would not capitulate when bitcoin goes down in price. Look at <a href="https://stocktwits.com/symbol/NVDA?utm_source=the-arc.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=an-ode-to-bitcoin-pricing">$NVDA ( ▲ 1.77% )</a> , it’s down over 6% from its recent all-time high, are you capitulating there? Or are you trusting that it is a good long-term asset to hold?</p> <p>Bitcoin is historically a volatile asset, and in bull runs, pullbacks of over 30% are common. Currently, bitcoin is down about 22% from the highs, and this pullback is one of 5 corrections this cycle of similar magnitude. This pullback is also smaller than the 2 pullbacks we have already experienced. In April we went down to ~$75,000.</p> <p>Success with bitcoin requires a low time preference, patience, and realizing the characteristics of what bitcoin is.</p> <p>Bitcoin is the scarcest form of currency in the world.</p> <p>And in an ever increasingly digital and global world, bitcoin will win.</p> <p>My thesis has not changed; the fundamentals surrounding bitcoin have never been stronger.</p> <p>$100,000 per bitcoin is a gift.</p> <p>The next point is a continuation of the time horizon you should have when investing in general, and definitely have with bitcoin.</p> <p>Capital can move bitcoin as we have historically seen, and more recently, with a much larger asset—gold. There is no denying this. However, praying for an overnight omega candle in the price chart of bitcoin is not an effective strategy. The only effective strategy is not trying to time the market and buying bitcoin via a dollar cost average strategy and sizing up a buy when the price goes lower, and then holding for the future. The lower your time preference is, the higher your differential for the future is, the better off bitcoin will treat you and your life. This is a historically true statement.</p> <p>At the same time, it opens up a discussion of what a life-changing return on your investment is. This is a can of worms because obviously a 5x (500%) return on a $5 investment is dramatically different than a 5x return on $500,000 investment. Size matters in investment just as much as the returns.</p> <p>But let’s talk through my main bitcoin thesis within the next decade. Bitcoin will pass gold in market cap. Repeating a statement I say constantly—<strong>in an ever increasingly digital and global world, bitcoin is better than gold in every meaningful way.</strong> Therefore, it is logical that bitcoin will pass gold in market cap.</p> <p>Again, I want to emphasize, this is not in the next week, this is not in the next month, this is over the next 10 years. Think of how different your life was 10 years ago from today, now think of what 10 years from now can look like.</p> <p>Long-term investing is the strategy that wins.</p> <p>Now, in the event that bitcoin passes gold in market cap over the next decade, you yield a return of over 10x (1000%) at today’s prices.</p> <p>Is there an asset, company, or idea where you can have a similar level of logical certainty over the next decade?</p> <p>I would argue no.</p> <p>Yes, AI is a huge talking point, and there will be tons of money to be made if you invest in the right company, at the right time, for the right amount. These “if” scenarios fail to mention how many years of stomach-turning volatility you may have to stomach along the way to Valhalla! However, those actions are a lot more complicated and filled with chance than just buying and holding bitcoin. AI could also just be a facade (I don’t believe it is a bubble for the record)! This enables them to gain monetary value in the short term for expenses or desires they have while maintaining ownership of the assets they hold. This is seen as normal.\ In the bitcoin world, these sorts of loans and adoption of these loans are still in their emerging phases, although rest assured, they are coming.</p> <p>In the banking world, JP Morgan has announced that they will be accepting bitcoin as collateral <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pet-rock-no-more-jpmorgan-013104388.html"><em>for institutional clients</em></a>. JP Morgan joins BlackRock and Fidelity, who have already begun accepting bitcoin via their ETF collateral programs.</p> <p>With bitcoin-only companies, these products are also emerging. <a href="https://strike.me/en/lending/"><em>Strike</em></a>, a bitcoin exchange, has bitcoin-backed loans where users can borrow against their bitcoin without selling. Their loans start at 9.5% APR and start at a minimum of $10,000. <a href="https://x.com/lava_xyz/status/1983228392238383330"><em>Lava</em></a>, a bitcoin startup focused on the bitcoin lending space, has just released the world’s first bitcoin-backed line of credit. This unlocks a user’s bitcoin purchasing power instantly and securely.</p> <p>Bitcoin being used as collateral is a reality that is here to stay.</p> <p>Inherently, the “bitcoin as collateral” use case is counter to the circular economy of bitcoin because it emphasizes spending dollars that were unlocked via your bitcoin holdings and not spending your bitcoin to buy goods and services. I maintain that this is just the normal progression of the Bitcoin Thesis playing out. For as long as bitcoin remains, there will be two key characteristics defining it:</p> <ol> <li><p>A store of value to protect future purchasing power against fiat debasement</p></li> <li><p>Currency used as a medium of exchange, and ultimately, the currency of the world</p></li> </ol> <p>In my opinion, you do not get to point number 2 without point number 1 being mainstream. People went to war for thousands of years to secure gold because it was scarce and could serve as currency. People have always sought out the scarcest asset and then used that scarce asset for currency.</p> <p><strong>Bitcoin is both.</strong></p> <p>I now resort to a saying that I will say and continue to say:<strong> In an ever increasingly digital and global world, bitcoin is better than gold in every way.</strong> In the context of bitcoin being used as a store of value and as a currency, this simply means that humanity will turn to sound money again in the future, and they will use bitcoin, not gold to back their currency.</p> <p>I believe bitcoin is money, and for it to eventually be used as the currency of the world, companies and individuals need to not only build the rails enabling bitcoin payments to scale, but also need to spend and accept bitcoin for goods and services. A high time preference means you prioritize today compared to the future.</p> <p>Some examples where time preference matters in your life:</p> <ul> <li><p>Choosing to eat junk food today, tomorrow, and next week leads you down a path where, unless you change that habit, it will make you the future version of you unhealthy.</p></li> <li><p>Committing to run a marathon in 20 weeks means the training sessions today, tomorrow, and the following weeks will enable you to show up on race day prepared.</p></li> <li><p>Writing one page a day for the book idea you have mulled over will enable you to present a finished copy over the coming year.</p></li> </ul> <p>Nearly anything you do today has a future ramification for the person you will become.</p> <p>Beyond pursuing specific goals or ideas, there are certain “infinite” games that you can play for your whole life and never reach completion. These infinite games are where the magic of life emerges.</p> <ul> <li><p>You don’t reach maximum fitness; you simply keep living a healthy lifestyle.</p></li> <li><p>You don’t suddenly stop being a parent or loving partner; you simply keep building these relationships.</p></li> <li><p>You don’t learn everything; you simply keep learning.</p></li> </ul> <p>The infinite games of family, health, and knowledge are three areas that you can find fulfillment in throughout your life, primarily in the fact that they are infinite.</p> <p>Chasing goals and pursuing infinite areas of life both take your daily action and choices and reflect them into the future down the road. These are all low time preference activities because you are planning for the infinite.</p> <p><strong>Time preference is everything.</strong></p> <p>Everything you do in the present impacts your future life.</p> <p>In a society that currently preaches and advocates the “get rich quick,” the “cheat to succeed,” or the “gamble to win” mentality, opting into a time perspective that is future-facing is the sustainable decision.</p> <p>If you commit to getting 1% better at something every day, you will be 37.8 times better at the end of 1 year. This is a journey you will not realize when your time perspective is in the days. Your daily actions will be marginally different when compared. However, when you expand your perspective to be the months and the full year, you will see the true growth. This sort of thinking applies everywhere and with anything you aim to do in your life. The “overnight success” is a myth. Nothing happens overnight. There may be a sudden movement that makes things seem like there was an “overnight explosion,” but more often than not, there were months, if not years, of buildup before something or someone finally reached their ascension point.</p> <p><strong>Time preference above all else. Plan for the future you want to live.</strong></p> <p>The above all relates to your life, and I will argue that studying bitcoin helps you unlock these perspectives related to time preference in all areas of your life because bitcoin rewards people with low time preferences. The longer you hold bitcoin, the better off you are. Gold is up nearly 60% year to date while bitcoin is up just under 16%. This is a huge discrepancy and gold bugs are singing high praises as new all-time highs are consistently reached. You even see retail involved in the party as they are <a href="https://x.com/BullionStar/status/1979072804638331173">queuing up to purchase gold.</a></p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/610353ffec9d78940e7aec51c6c50f3b6e9b8ca1186fea7fa5ef355b80220b7d.webp" alt=""/></p> <p>Yet another point for <a href="https://the-arc.beehiiv.com/p/bitcoin-goes-much-higher"><strong>human psychology</strong></a>. If you don’t want it before all-time highs, you will certainly want it after! Fear of missing out (Fomo) is real.</p> <p>However, this is not a comparison of the price return percentage of bitcoin to gold. If I wanted to compare, you could look at the 1-year, 3-year, 5-year, 10-year, and really any other time period to see that <a href="https://x.com/w_s_bitcoin/status/1962856483370025254">bitcoin has outperformed</a>.</p> <p>This is simply a scale comparison.</p> <p>The biggest company by market cap in the world is NVIDIA with a $4.460 trillion market cap. Bitcoin is currently 8th on the asset list by market cap at just under $2.16 trillion.</p> <p>Number one on this list is gold with a market cap of just under $29.68 trillion.</p> <p>We have discussed before how humans suffer from another psychological reality, unit bias, and I believe this once again presents itself.</p> <p>People are lining up outside stores to buy gold when it is over $4,000 an ounce because they think it can move upward and net them a positive return.</p> <p>However, when you zoom out to market cap, you see the true difference in what needs to happen for the price to change.</p> <p>Capital needs to pour in. And as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent put it when <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-hot-topic-at-the-imf-meetings-is-the-price-of-gold-could-it-help-put-a-lid-on-prices-6c354b29?utm_source=the-arc.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=price-does-not-matter"><strong>answering what was</strong></a> behind the rise in gold price, “there are more buyers than sellers.”</p> <p>For context on the magnitude of gold’s upward move, at a gold price of $4,300, bitcoin to gold parity now stood at $1.5 million per bitcoin. I have been writing about this long enough that the parity line was under 1 million dollars per bitcoin. People complain constantly that bitcoin is too expensive and not worth their investment. These people are wrong. I have been consistent about my stance on bitcoin for years, and I will reiterate it once again in a single sentence:</p> <p><strong>In an ever increasingly digital and global world, the logical case is for bitcoin to pass gold in market cap.</strong></p> <p>There are many, many nuances to why bitcoin fixes all of the flaws that gold offers, but that is not the point of this. The point of this is that if you think bitcoin is too high and your investment may not be worth it, you are comparing bitcoin to the wrong thing. <strong>Bitcoin to gold has always been the comparison.</strong> Ever since President Nixon removed the gold standard from the dollar, humanity has been in a blip in the matrix of “fiat” currency. For 5,000 years before President Nixon’s Executive Order, humanity clung to gold because it was the hardest asset they could find. Wars were fought, kingdoms were destroyed, and women and tribes were conquered, all in the pursuit of gold. The time we are currently in is simply the transition from the analog world of gold to the digital world of bitcoin.</p> <p>Lastly, as a retail investor, you may be concerned with day-to-day price ranges. But I can assure you that the market movers, the billionaires, the corporations, and the nation-states are not. When the time comes that they will decide to allocate 1, 5, 10, or even 50% of their portfolio to bitcoin, they will not care what price they purchase at; they will only care that they have it.</p> <p>Don’t be sidelined by mental gymnastic games that don’t use the proper denominator. Not only allowed, they are accepted as a normal part of doing business.</p> <p><a href="https://stripe.com/resources/more/chargebacks-101#:~:text=They%20want%20to%20avoid%20the,The%20customer%20files%20a%20dispute."><em>A chargeback</em></a> is a forced transaction reversal where a customer’s bank or credit card issuer takes funds directly from a merchant’s account to refund a customer. They typically occur in cases of fraud, when goods are not received, or an item is defective. They operate primarily to protect the customer, and these protections come at the expense of the business—especially when the chargeback is manipulated by the customer.</p> <p>Banks and credit card issuers in the fiat world act as the intermediary between a customer and a business and are the ruling authority that can grant or deny the chargeback. In cases where a chargeback is requested, it is the business’s responsibility to provide evidence to deny a chargeback. Given the fact that anyone requesting a chargeback is either a customer of the bank or the credit card issuer, whose side do you think the bank or the credit card issuer will be on?</p> <p>The old adage of “the customer is always right” holds true. Obviously, not every chargeback is approved, but if the acting intermediary can simply pass off the brunt of a chargeback to a business <strong>and make their customer happy</strong> all in the same act, what do you think typically happens?</p> <p>The scale at which chargebacks impact US businesses is impressive:</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/58bdda2b1fb57e6c74d3a74c2b93806e4c449f7dc5cf8fcaba035846e44415e7.webp" alt=""/></p> <p>Chargebacks are a fiat concept because of how our traditional payment rails operate. With Bitcoin and its transaction finality, there are no “chargebacks.” This is great for a business because it means the only way a “refund” can occur is if it is truly warranted. That means a customer must return to the store with the item and receipt, or must ship the item back per the terms of return. In this sense, the return is not extractive in nature; both parties are returning to their original status.</p> <p>However, just because there are no traditional “chargebacks” in Bitcoin does not mean there isn’t a Bitcoin version of the fiat chargeback.</p> <p><strong>Bitcoin’s version of a chargeback is the address swap attack.</strong></p> <p>While Bitcoin makes returning an item more fair for the business, the lack of intermediaries does present potential pitfalls for both the customer and business via an address swap attack. We argue this lack of intermediaries is a net benefit, but it’s worth noting the tradeoffs and taking steps to protect against them.</p> <p>An address swap attack is, by definition, fraud where an attacker replaces a legitimate Bitcoin (or Lightning) receiving address with one that they control. Unless detected, the sender will send their transaction to the malicious address instead of the intended recipient, resulting in a loss of funds.</p> <p>Common vectors enabling these attacks are clipboard malware that detects copied addresses and substitutes the attacker’s address before you paste, and compromised websites or browser extensions that rewrite the address field on an invoice/payment page. There are also such attacks where the UX of a website <em>could potentially display the proper address,</em> but the backend of the site actually directs to a malicious address.</p> <p>While it is true these attacks are “rare,” every time they do happen, they are expensive, damage the reputation of a merchant, and are a net negative for Bitcoin. As Bitcoin scales as a medium of exchange, even having a 1 in 100,000 attack rate is too high to be reasonably accepted.</p> <p>Two lines of thought apply when thinking about address swap attacks:</p> <ol> <li><p>Think, “It won’t happen to me. I double-check my addresses before I transmit my transaction.” (Double-checking your address does nothing if your device is co-opted; you can still be attacked).</p></li> <li><p>Attack the issue and identify that this is a problem holding back Bitcoin from being widespread money; then fix it.</p></li> </ol> <p>Branta aligns itself with the second thought and has a singular mission to create a world where sending Bitcoin transactions is not only frictionless but also anxiety-free.</p> <p><strong>Branta contends that address swaps are worse than the fiat chargeback because when address swaps occur, the only winner is the malicious actor. The business and the customer both lose.</strong></p> <p><strong>One Sat stolen is capital misallocation and is unacceptable.</strong></p> <p>Being the armor against these exploits is vital to the mission of Branta and is specifically the defense Branta’s Guardrail provides. By being a verification source, Branta offers one more layer of security that specifically aims to verify the validity of an intended transaction.</p> <p>However, it is worth it to flesh out the thinking of the first option from above. Let’s assume you have the belief that address-swap attacks are nothing to worry about, and you are protected. Except, let’s assume that one happens to you.</p> <p>What would that look like? Multiple scenarios paint the picture that this is a very real pain point and liability that could happen to anyone.</p> <p>Example #1) You are a seasoned Bitcoin vet intending to purchase something from a Bitcoin vendor. You queue up your cart and scan the QR Code for your Lightning transaction. You have done this a million times. You click confirm and see that it was “accepted.” Yet, you don’t receive any confirmation from the vendor. You wait a day and still have no confirmation. You reach out to the vendor, and they don’t have any receipts for the funds. The reason for this is that the address you thought was the real address was actually the attacker’s address you were confirming. Your Bitcoin is gone, the vendor does not receive funds, and you don’t receive the item you want. <strong>Losses all-around.</strong></p> <p>Example #2) You have stacked diligently and have a sizeable amount of Bitcoin you want to send to cold storage to save for the future. You queue up your address from the exchange, and you hit send. You wait for the transaction to hit the mempool, and you watch as it is verified on the Bitcoin Network. You wait and you wait, yet your funds never arrive in your cold storage wallet. You triple-check the original transaction, and you realize you were a victim of an address swap attack. Your Bitcoin is gone. <strong>You lose.</strong></p> <p>Example #3) You are new to Bitcoin and are excited about using it as payment. Your friends and family have talked about it for a while, and you finally decided to learn how to buy some for yourself. You go to a Bitcoin merchant and want to buy a product for the first time with Bitcoin. This is a similar situation to example 1 above, except in this case, you are new to Bitcoin. You get address swapped and realize the “fiat safety measures” are not in place within the realm of Bitcoin. You leave Bitcoin forever because you were stolen from. The merchant loses a customer, and Bitcoin loses a loser. <strong>You lose, the business loses, and the circular economy of Bitcoin loses as well.</strong></p> <p>These examples all impact Bitcoin and the circular economy in different ways. Regardless of their negative impact, it is undeniable that address swap attacks and similar attacks cannot be an outcome that is routinely possible in a world where Bitcoin is commonly used as a medium of exchange.</p> <p>From a business side of things, your customer having a bad experience reflects negatively on your storefront. If your customer is “stolen” from when trying to interact with your checkout page, what is the likelihood they will trust you as a merchant going forward? If they keep this issue private, you have lost one customer. If they post about it online, you now have negative press you have to deal with.</p> <p>From an individual perspective, there are varying levels of responses. If you lose a huge chunk of your stack when sending to a vault, what makes you want to come back to the world of Bitcoin if this level of theft can just happen? If you are a newcomer to Bitcoin and are excited to spend your Bitcoin in the circular economy, and you lose it via an address-swap attack, that fiat credit card in your pocket looks way more attractive to return to.</p> <p>In the Bitcoin world, there are no intermediaries to reverse a transaction in the case you get address swapped. For my audience, it’s worth touching on the main aspects both to keep you informed and to enhance your perspectives as you think about bitcoin.</p> <hr> <h3 id="a-crash-2">A Crash</h3> <p>This past Friday, I was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, (featured image was taken there as well) celebrating with friends and family, when the worst liquidation event in crypto history occurred. My eyes had never seen how fast many alt coins dropped after the news of China tariffs being levied by President Trump. We watched bitcoin drop from the $120,000s to just under $105,000 in a matter of minutes. At the same time, many prominent alt coins dropped upwards of 60%, something unheard of in this space. $ETH and $SOL both dropped around 20% and that is “mild.” In total, the count of liquidations exceeded $19 billion. For context, when FTX collapsed, there was $1.6 billion lost. COVID caused $1.2 billion in liquidations. This liquidation event was HUGE.</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/d1f41d0455994e76c715d266252c8389e52d4111e928acf0c6fe6bdf2218a699.jpg" alt=""/></p> <p>More context, $XRP, the 5th largest alt-coin, crashed to $1.25 from $2.82 in a matter of minutes. $ATOM, a top 25 coin in market cap, dropped to $0.001.</p> <p>Importantly, this liquidation event brings up once again the potential downfalls of playing with leverage. Spot investors who only buy and hold their assets (speaking specifically to bitcoin) largely saw bitcoin at a price that we saw last week (bitcoin quickly rebounded above $110,000).</p> <p><a href="https://x.com/scottmelker/status/1977071307754983700"><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/1f053aa5a8f8c1d949306b45ba9adf9cbcff54f6c6291633f3e63ee53c195340.png" alt=""/></a></p> <p>My audience is primarily bitcoin only, and this liquidation event mainly impacted alt coins and people who use leverage. These are two things I advocate against; however, the fact that this liquidation event was on the scale it was, at least notationally, and bitcoin didn’t drop below $100,000 is astounding, while also showcasing how much bitcoin has matured since the days of the FTX collapse and Covid.</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/f7d7d71d2e51baf478ad4ae1fb09b84253ec37a6f95bdf5399edba974af165eb.png" alt=""/></p> <p>Again, if you are a bitcoiner and you understand bitcoin, your take on any severe pullback is typically to buy more. Your thesis did not change; your dollar merely purchases more bitcoin. This is the long-term perspective that is needed when you interact with bitcoin.</p> <hr> <h3 id="gold-2">Gold</h3> <p>After so many years of being seen as “boring,” gold has soared this year. It crossed $4,000 an ounce and approached $4,200. Many people understand gold to be the premier hard asset to hold as a store of value and an inflation hedge. At the same time, we have seen silver reach a new all-time high of above $50 an ounce. My take on these events is that this is merely a worldwide reaction to continued currency debasement.</p> <p>As <a href="https://x.com/LynAldenContact">Lyn Alden</a> popularized and continues to say, “Nothing stops this train.” The train is the money printer and the debt spiral that we find our country currently in. It is my belief, and the language of the administration proves this, that the United States government will not stop printing money, and if the money printer moves, hard assets will increase in value as your dollar is debased. As your currency is debased, it shows up everywhere in life. Assets and housing increase in price, but so do groceries and daily items. The “winners” in this world are the asset holders, and the losers are people who only have cash. This is undeniable. However, I would argue that holding assets is merely a game to try and preserve your capital at the hands of inflation.</p> <p>This leads us to gold, and in an ever increasingly digital and global world, it inevitably leads us to bitcoin. Many people are familiar with the properties of gold, and many people are averse to bitcoin, based on what headlines they have heard or do not understand bitcoin at all.</p> <p>Let’s discuss what makes gold valuable.</p> <p>Gold has value as a form of “hard money” because it&#39;s durable, divisible, fungible, and scarce. It can’t be created at will, it doesn’t corrode and stands the test of time, and people around the world have desired it for thousands of years. Gold also sits outside the financial system and is “censorship resistant.” No intermediary can “freeze” the gold in your possession, and it cannot be created out of thin air.</p> <p>These are all logical characteristics of why gold has value. Now let’s do bitcoin.</p> <p>It replicates those same monetary characteristics: scarcity, portability, divisibility, and resistance to debasement in digital form. People who get hung up on the aspect that it is digital need to realize that our current financial rails are all digital (think about the bank app you have on your phone, think about how little cash you have in your wallet). Except, unlike gold, it moves globally near instantaneously and is publicly verifiable. Gold, on the other hand, takes days or weeks to cross oceans and is both very expensive and time-consuming to verify (nation-states have to melt down their gold and test for purity). Bitcoin takes the characteristics gold possesses as a hard form of currency and brings it to the 21st century in a digital way.</p> <p>So while gold has outperformed this year, I do believe it is a logical consideration to hold that bitcoin has extreme room to grow. The price of bitcoin at gold market cap parity now exceeds $1.3 million per bitcoin.</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/2a8f37eb0037dc8b5b2ec2bf264dda5ac757f60b93a42665bc6a61218608c3eb.png" alt=""/></p> <p>How does bitcoin get there?</p> <p>My thesis remains the same as it has been for years. Bitcoin maintains the properties of sound money and also operates under a strict scarcity metric of only 21 million coins. I believe in an ever increasingly digital and global world, and in this belief, it is only logical that bitcoin takes over as the premier store of value and, in doing so, will pass the market cap of gold. I can’t predict when, but I do believe it happens before the year 2032.</p> <p>Humans have sought hard assets for thousands of years to preserve their capital, and I do not expect that habit to change. Bitcoin is the hardest asset in the world, and I expect it to continue gaining market share. These are characteristics I do not expect to change over the next 50 years and I expect bitcoin to stick around. With that, bitcoin is once again the most asymmetric bet you can make. It either goes to zero or it goes to infinity.</p> <p><img src="https://blossom.primal.net/333be2da5809761f74907187ca5660d4b2c043ab65d5bfc96bb99010d70cbd72.jpg" alt=""/></p> <p>Gold is great, bitcoin is better.</p> <hr> <h3 id="quarter-4-magic-2">Quarter 4 Magic</h3> <p>Q3 of the year has managed just a 5.75% average performance for bitcoin. Not bad for a span of 3 months, but when you consider the CAGR of bitcoin, this is nothing to hang its hat on. September is also the worst month for bitcoin’s average performance. Q4 is where the fireworks occur.</p> <p>“Since 2013, <a href="https://thecryptoadvisor.substack.com/p/cryptos-slowest-season-is-behind">Bitcoin has averaged</a> a +85.42% return in Q4, with a median of +52.31% - a figure that better reflects the “typical” quarter once you strip out the outliers. Narrow the window to just the past five years, and those numbers settle to a still-impressive +52.67% average and +47.73% median. And perhaps most telling: since 2013, only four of the twelve Q4s have been negative - implying roughly a two-thirds chance of posting gains in any given year.”</p> <p>Below are notable year-end predictions made either in 2024 or earlier this year:</p> <ul> <li><p><strong>Bitwise:</strong> Bitcoin above $200,000 (new ATHs for BTC, ETH, and SOL).</p></li> <li><p><strong>Standard Chartered:</strong> $135,000 by Q3 2025; $200,000 by year-end.</p></li> <li><p><strong>VanEck:</strong> $180,000 by year-end.</p></li> <li><p><strong>Matrixport:</strong> $160,000 in 2025.</p></li> <li><p><strong>Galaxy Digital:</strong> $150,000 in H1; $185,000 by Q4 2025.</p></li> <li><p><strong>Bernstein:</strong> $200,000 by late 2025 or early 2026.</p></li> </ul> <p>Anything can happen, and I am expecting fireworks.</p> <p>Worth noting is that it truly seems like every week we are hearing news about more bitcoin adoption. <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/morgan-stanley-opens-bitcoin-access#:~:text=BUSINESS-,Morgan%20Stanley%20Opens%20Bitcoin%20And%20Crypto%20Fund%20Access%20to%20All,$13%20billion%20back%20in%202020.">Morgan Stanley </a>has recently expanded its offerings related to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, allowing all wealth management clients to access crypto funds, and plans to enable direct trading through its E-Trade platform.</p> <p>Vanguard, the world’s second-largest asset manager, is also preparing to allow its customers access to crypto ETFs on its brokerage platforms. This comes in stark contrast to a famous statement made by the firm in 2024:</p> <blockquote> <p>“We also have no plans to offer Vanguard Bitcoin ETFs or other crypto-related products—our perspective is long-standing that cryptocurrencies’ high volatility runs counter to our goal of helping investors generate positive real returns over the long term.”</p> </blockquote> <p>I believe this move was inevitable. You can’t beat bitcoin, you can only adopt it sooner or later. There just hasn't been a whole lot happening in the world of fiat merchants that ICKNO follows, while at the same time, Nostr merchants have been absolutely killing it. It's pretty crazy because I currently follow over 100 merchants, only 15% of them are active on Nostr, and 75% of the notable activity in the past week came from that 15% of merchants. Nostriches ship!!]<br/><br/>Part of my previous work in the Bitcoin space involved working on a decentralized marketplace. One of the biggest takeaways I had from that experience was that even the most decentralized of technologies benefit greatly from centralized interfaces that abstract the underlying complexity away and polish the experience to make it more approachable for users.<br/><br/>I think simplification is something we need right now in this world of Bitcoin+Nostr commerce. There's folks developing storefront software, others working on smoother payment flows, and still others working on building out Nostr more generally. While that's all critical work, the end result is an overwhelming commerce scene for even a seasoned user to navigate. It's quite a fragmented landscape. Even fiat merchants are fragmented these days...many have no Amazon presence, a bunch use Shopify, but many use other platforms as well.<br/><br/>Don't get me wrong—this kind of merchant fragmentation is not a bad thing! In fact, it's an essential requirement for merchant _and_ consumer freedom. Merchants should be able to set their own conditions for business, payments, logistics, etc. Consumers need choices so they don't find themselves boxed in by a monopolistic juggernaut 20 years later. Problem is, in practice, merchant fragmentation doesn't translate into a great experience for consumers. People don't have time or patience to follow what's going on in 20 different places every day. They need 1 smooth, clean interface that masks the ugly fragmentation underneath. Hence ICKNO.<br/><br/>That leads to another key difference in ICKNO's approach. The main requirement for featuring a product is that it must not be icky, not that the merchant must accept bitcoin. This is common ground that many bitcoiners and no-coiners alike can find useful. No-coiners in particular will see all the amazing stuff you can only by for sats, see the prices of those goods go down first-hand over time, and start to wonder what the hell they're doing.<br/><br/>To that end...if you're launching something new and want to make sure we know, tell me. With seemingly no bounds to real estate, size or scale, anything and everything could emerge and be easily accessible at the hands of a device connected to the World Wide Web.</p> <p>The internet removed the limitations that the analog world was tied to via the laws of physics. A Yellow Pages book could only be so many pages long before the book became nonviable for print and circulation. The same could be said for any newspaper, magazine, or method of communication. Even television news reporting was bound by the laws of physics because unless a viewer recorded it to a VHS tape, CD, or recorded it to their individual DVR system, the “live” television that was broadcasted was not easily accessible at a later date. Even with these recording methods, the television output would still be bound to the physics of the distribution methods that the recorder deployed.</p> <p>Prior to the internet there was always an aspect of the physical world—the real world, that placed limitations, but at the same time created an aspect of permanence and thoughtfulness impossible to ignore regardless of the method of output. There was always an opportunity cost. In the above examples, publishers had to decide what contacts or articles to publish in their print. The TV production crew had to decide what story to lead with to capture an audience’s attention. A viewer had to expend time and currency if they wanted to record something for later. An infinite internet where the consumer applications and devices that dominate industries focus primarily on consumer growth, convenience, and shareholder returns. These are applications and devices that focus on the now. These are applications and devices geared for consummatory tactics that prioritize the now at the expense of permanence or long-term resilience. These are applications and devices geared to follow a path of digital decay instead of permanence.</p> <p>Bitcoin emerged in 2009 and created the first real anchor of the physical realm to the digital realm. Prior to Bitcoin, internet architects could operate as gods, snapping their fingers and creating anything in any capacity as if the physical world did not exist. Post Genesis Block, and with every successive block that is mined to the network, the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7ID3fKAFQM">time-chain</a>Bitcoin created effectively institutes real scarcity to the digital void that previously operated solely under the direction of the infinite. Without Bitcoin as this anchor, the internet would lose all comparison to the physical world and with it, all semblance to time. The internet would forever trend through cycles of digital decay—digital decay that is prominently displayed through your social media feeds where the “<a href="https://x.com/david_perell/status/1354146211020886016">present” is amplified </a>and any aspect of the past is quickly forgotten, sent to the voids of yesteryear.</p> <p>However, just because Bitcoin created the time-chain, the universal metric, that provides scale to the internet, does not mean it’s common for users, applications, or devices to readily adopt this standard. In reality, we still very much live in a world where the standard is the acceptance of the infinite—an acceptance that the Newtonian laws of the real world are nothing more than a blip in history as they relate to the bits of the digital world.</p> <p>It’s important to realize that an acceptance of infinite is not equal to an acceptance of permanence. When infinite is the only measure for scale, there is no meaningful method of comparison for how bits of information should be viewed, which instead promotes the opposite result: there is no time in the internet, and anything beyond the “now” is effectively lost to any physical measure. When the “now” is the only thing that matters, companies and internet architects promote and extract value for the “now” at the expense of the future. Nearly every application and physical hardware you use are designed to prioritize the “now” over the future. Pertaining to the internet, this is the key characteristic of digital decay.</p> <p>The question is, why have we accepted a standard which trends toward digital decay when a solution geared for digital permanence is right in front of us?</p> <p>The next question is what can be done to bridge this gap?</p> <p>The final question is what does a world look like for an internet user when permanence instead of decay is the focal point?</p> <h2 id="programmed-decay-in-the-world-pre-btc-2">Programmed Decay in the World Pre-BTC</h2> <p>With the emergence of the internet physical laws of creation could be circumvented. During the .com boom and subsequent bust, it was evident that the craze that occurred was because the world did not know how to responsibly handle this newfound superpower. Through the ashes of the .com meltdown have emerged 25 years of innovation and deflationary tech which have changed the landscape of the world as we know it. 25 to 30 years ago, you would have been in the minority if you thought, or understood, that the internet was the future and not just a fad. Today, it’s nearly impossible to find someone who isn’t plugged into the internet via devices daily, and the thought of scaling a business without an internet presence is laughable.</p> <p>The internet’s magic and ability to bypass laws of the physical world have become too addictive for the world to resist.</p> <p>Moore&#39;s Law is the observation and historical trend that the number of <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https://newsroom.intel.com/press-kit/moores-law%23:~:text%3Dmoore%27s%2520law%2520is%2520the%2520observation,original%2520paper%2520published%2520in%25201965.&amp;ved=2ahUKEwijo-XS67CPAxW3TTABHet5GnMQFnoECCcQAw&amp;usg=AOvVaw3RLJcU8QtahSNmJnCYdm6a">transistors on an integrated circuit</a> doubles approximately every two years, leading to exponential increases in computing power and efficiency while costs decrease. What this means is during the timeframe of the .com boom to now, the internet has become exponentially better while becoming exponentially cheaper. More is possible today than seemingly ever thought possible. What this means to a customer is that for everyday use, the products and applications at their disposal have become dramatically better and dramatically cheaper. In an age where compute gets better and cheaper, it is a race to the bottom in terms of the price that companies can sell to customers. The trend we have seen with internet companies, and specifically social media companies, is the cost becomes free from a monetary perspective while your data and time are extracted to no end. These companies get their value out of you even if you think it is “free to play.”</p> <p>The programmed decay we see in this industry and these applications is through billions of dollars spent to curate the algorithms all under the scientific study of research for attention. Research for <em>your</em> attention. These social platforms win through you providing your time. These companies and assets are taking the scarce asset of your time, capturing it along with your data and internet habits, and regurgitating an algorithm at you even more programmed and more honed to keep you online. When you are perpetually online and at the hands of these companies and the algorithms you deploy, you are increasingly focused on the “now” and cheap dopamine hits with no semblance or thought to defer to future consumption. You are at the hands of the algorithms and the algorithms prioritize and only care for the “now.” Exactly how they intend you to be. You are merely one cog in the wheel these companies use to extract shareholder value from you and every other user of their application.</p> <p>Simultaneously to Silicon Valley and other tech applications pushing for “growth at all costs” while extracting your attention and data, we have also seen the products we use move from pushes to perfection—pushes to permanence, to pushes to the next iteration in the innovation cycle. Or in extreme cases, built to fail in the future so that <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-67911517&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiItd_G6bCPAxURRjABHfBhNj0QFnoECBkQAQ&amp;usg=AOvVaw1jry-tGbpuhpS8QqBoWrRK">customers have to upgrade</a>. This pattern as it relates to the products we consume coincides with the dollar moving off of the gold standard in 1971 and only has continued to infiltrate every walk of life as society has continued to be a society dedicated to the “now” and as it relates to operating businesses—profit today, profit this quarter, profit this year, at the expense of profit tomorrow, next quarter or next year. Companies have shifted from pushing for mastery, durability, and pure innovation to instead opt for subtle changes, walled gardens, and cheap materials to increase margins.</p> <p>Think of the devices or objects you use daily. What materials are they made of? Do they feel like they were designed and created to last? Do they feel like or look like they were constructed to last the test of time? Or do they give off the feel or appearance that they were designed as merely temporary items designed to keep you, the customer, in the customer journey where you would purchase another product down the line?</p> <p>Think of your car: What once had steel and metals is now primarily aluminum and cheap materials.</p> <p>Think of your phone: “New” models come out every year and the companies market them to customers as being “must haves.”</p> <p>Think of your laptop: It has a sealed battery and marginal, if any, ways to upgrade aspects of the hardware. If you want a full upgrade, you need a new device.</p> <p>Think of your fridge, your blender, or any appliance in your kitchen: Can you honestly say they are a higher quality than the appliances of old? It has shifted to prioritize the short-term gains at the expense of long-term permanence. Companies, products, and applications are prioritizing a subscription model where customers aren’t seen as people; they are seen as numbers on a balance sheet. Growth at all costs has been the motto.</p> <p>We have moved from a society that cares about permanence and instead opts for “getting by.” This “getting by” is counter to the decades of mastery and permanence that the beauty and longevity of periods like the Renaissance perpetuated.</p> <p>Programmed decay has infiltrated our society and has become the norm.</p> <p>This does not have to be the case.</p> <p>Bitcoin is the inflection point for our world and society to return to the ways of old—the standards of old. This transfer merged the world bound by the Newtonian laws of physics with the magical abstract world of the internet.</p> <p>Bitcoin introduced digital scarcity in a way never before seen and did so by emerging as the first incorruptible, non-decaying digital object. By design, Bitcoin produced a system which sought permanence and in doing so, flipped the incentives from one of engineered decay to one of engineered permanence.</p> <p>Unlike nearly any application or product you can think of, Bitcoin is designed to last a millennium with little to any changes required. It operates with one mission in mind; to process the next block of transactions. The rules for this process are defined and constantly reinforced with every successive block as the time-chain of blocks that Bitcoin produces becomes longer and longer with every addition.</p> <p>Since its birth Bitcoin has assumed a near-linear ascension of both adoption and associated price. It is a world where the future is considered and current consumption are routinely deferred to the future benefit. Change these to have permanence in mind, build them to last, uphold trust in the digital reformation of capital the Bitcoin Network provides, and society slowly reverts to a world whose duty it is to provide the best output for the benefit of consumers, not at the expense.</p> <h2 id="bitcoin-facing-products-derive-permanence-from-the-digital-to-physical-2">Bitcoin Facing Products Derive Permanence from the Digital to Physical</h2> <p>Bitcoin is a tool that creates a base unit of time in a realm that time does not exist natively. Through the transmutation of physical energy used to power Bitcoin miners, the Bitcoin Network is powered and produces a standardized block which adds onto the time-chain that Bitcoin creates with each successive block of transactions. It is a time-chain because it is easy to see how and when each block was produced, and over the last ~15 years, has resided as the ledger or permanence across the digital atmosphere.</p> <p>The signifier of “established at block height ____” has meaning for this reason. You can easily trace a certain block back to a specific date and time. Bitcoin is the scribe of the internet in this way.</p> <p>It’s obvious that Bitcoin focuses on eternity through a simple mechanism of incrementally moving to the future, one block at a time. It stores records of the past on a public ledger easily accessible to all. It projects outward into the future with the halving schedule that is programmed to repeat every 210,000 blocks (~4 years) and will continue to repeat until the last Bitcoin is mined in roughly the year 2140. With these characteristics, Bitcoin has a physical and defined focus on the past, present, and future, all within the digital realm. This is engineered permanence.</p> <p>In a world where Bitcoin truly is the wedge between a society geared toward engineered decay and one geared toward engineered permanence, Bitcoin-influenced products would pull key characteristics from Bitcoin for their design, mainly the characteristics of durability and longevity, minimal trust in third parties, and are security first instead of consumer first.</p> <p>In the world of software applications, at minimum, this means they are open-source. Open-source software fosters innovation and removes the issue of intellectual property being lost when engineers retire, die, or move on from the project. The code is freely accessible to anyone wishing to build on or iterate upon it. Additionally, open-source code allows for security to be placed at the forefront. When code is open-source, anyone can inspect it, line by line, and vet it for themselves to verify whether it is secure or not. Open-source code is durable because it can stand the test of time in public and consumers do not have to rely on the “trust” of any single company because they can confirm or deny for themselves, which prioritizes security.</p> <p>In the world of hardware and products, durability and longevity should be the standard. That means items are created with premium materials built to last. There’s a reason people like using steel credit cards: they feel premium, they feel worth it, they feel durable. I believe debunking this idea is one of the most critical pieces of bitcoin education so that the retail investor can learn and then opt into a portfolio that features bitcoin.</p> <p>The saying, “The best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago. The second best time is today,” is a saying that appropriately applies to deciding to move from <a href="https://the-arc.beehiiv.com/p/0iswrong"><strong>no bitcoin</strong></a> in your portfolio to having a percentage allocation to it.</p> <p>It’s important to first understand human psychology, and then I will break down the true market fit. By the end of this, you will have a better sense of how and why bitcoin has the ability to go so much higher in the future.</p> <p>The term relating to the price of bitcoin that anchors on human psychology is called “unit bias.” Unit bias is the idea that people tend to want a complete unit of something, a whole, and “1” tends to be that whole number. Unit bias relates to bitcoin because people view 1 bitcoin as the base unit. With bitcoin above $110,000, many people see that price and immediately think, “I cannot afford that, I must go someplace else with my funds.” In reality, bitcoin is divisible by eight decimal points, and you can buy any dollar amount if you wanted to. But people fall trap to unit bias.</p> <p>You could buy $0.10 a day, $1 a day, $100—whatever amount you want you can. There is no requirement to view bitcoin as whole units. You can purchase small pieces of the pie of a single bitcoin and you will still own some bitcoin.</p> <p>Unit bias finds itself in the equity market all the time. This psychology is a reason that stocks split. A stock that is $1,000 comes off much more attractive to an investor if it is split 10:1 and repriced to $100. Someone with 1 share before the split now has 10 shares, but the monetary total value has not changed. The only thing that has changed is the supply of the equity has increased tenfold and actually inflated the outstanding supply.</p> <p>With bitcoin, this is not possible because there can only ever be 21 million bitcoin in circulation ever. Therefore, as more capital flows into bitcoin, the price naturally goes up. There are no games that can be played to make it seem more attractive to an investor by doing something like a stock split.</p> <p>The human psychology portion is now explained. Don’t let unit bias harm your thoughts about bitcoin.</p> <p>There are two key market reasons why bitcoin has the ability to go so much higher than it already is. The first is that bitcoin is better than gold in nearly every way, and gold has a market cap ~10 times higher than bitcoin. The second is that bitcoin has a much larger total addressable market than stocks, bonds, and commodities.</p> <p>In comparison to gold, bitcoin is cheap and near instant to transfer internationally. Whereas gold is slow and expensive. If a merchant in the United States wants to settle a trade with London via gold, they have to load their gold on a ship, pay to insure and protect it, wait the time it takes to cross the Atlantic, then in London the receiver needs to melt the gold down and verify its purity. With bitcoin, the merchant just needs the receiver’s bitcoin wallet address, and a trade can be done in minutes for pennies on the dollar. Additionally, the bitcoin ledger is verified by the network approximately every 10 minutes for anyone to see. Meanwhile, my whole life and much longer than that, we have just trusted that the United States government holds gold in Fort Knox, in reality we have no idea and it is not possible for any ordinary citizen to verify government ownership. Bitcoin also already has a higher stock to flow than gold, and will only continue to decrease its supply issuance, and that supply issuance is also capped at 21 million coins. <strong>Gold increases supply roughly 2 to 3% a year, which means in roughly 30 years the total supply of gold doubles.</strong></p> <p>That is hefty inflation when <strong>your timeframe is generations.</strong></p> <p>I summarize the gold vs bitcoin thesis in one sentence: In an ever-increasingly digital and global world, bitcoin is the clear choice as a digital store of value and international settlement compared to gold.</p> <p>Now, looking at the equities, bond, and commodities markets compared to bitcoin, using Apple as an example provides a good visual of the limits these products offer compared to bitcoin. Apple is a technology company and primarily sells products to the total addressable market of roughly 8 billion people in the world.</p> <p>When the iPhone first came out, countless people scoffed at the idea that people would pay a premium for a smartphone. Those people were wrong and Apple stock appreciated greatly in value since that time. However, the outlook today is maybe Apple could increase 5x or 10x, but it is inherently hard for a multi-trillion-dollar company to do that when its business model relies on people purchasing expensive items.</p> <p>Think of Apple and the products they have released in the last handful of years, there is a strong argument that AirPods, bluetooth headphones, are their most important product. Additionally, their current business model is largely subscription or repair-based in nature, where people are purchasing new iPhones to replace old or purchasing replacement AirPods after losing their original pair.</p> <p>I will go one step further and say Apple has built a walled garden technology product monopoly that makes it extremely sticky for users to stay within their ecosystem and not branch out. I type this on my MacBook while listening to music on my AirPods, playing from my iPhone. Case in point. However, walled garden technology product monopolies do not last a millennium. A new technology monopoly will emerge and beat out Apple, and even if history doesn’t repeat itself, it shouldn’t be hard to see that the total addressable market (TAM) Apple serves is far smaller than that of bitcoin.</p> <p>Bitcoin’s TAM is anyone who uses money and wants to save for the future. This is largely anyone and everybody in the world. From the poorest of the poor to the richest of the rich. They all spend money and all look to save money in some capacity for the future.</p> <p>Total up all the possible TAM that bitcoin can pull from, and it equates to between $200 to $300 trillion. This market is 100 times larger than the current size of bitcoin. In the case of Apple above, a blue-chip Magnificent 7 stock, mind you, it is hard to accept a 5 to 10x return in the future. How does the same projection work if you use real estate, any other equity, or a bond? But opportunity cost is everywhere with everything you do.</p> <p>What could you be doing with your time right now instead of what you are doing?</p> <p>What choices do you make daily at the expense of others?</p> <p>Every decision and action has some amount of opposite that could have been the choice you made.</p> <p>In the world of investing, there are countless opportunity costs.</p> <p>How much you invest.</p> <p>When you invest.</p> <p>What you invest in.</p> <p>If you chunk buy or dollar cost average.</p> <p>Everything has an opportunity cost.</p> <p>As it relates to bitcoin, I adamantly believe that over the next decade, every dollar you place somewhere besides bitcoin comes at a minimum of a 10x opportunity cost.</p> <p>$1 into the S&amp;P 500 index comes at the expense of a potential 10x had it been placed into bitcoin.</p> <p>$1 into insert any company available and it comes at the expense of a potential 10x had it been placed into bitcoin.</p> <p>Now, I do think certain companies can, and will, outperform bitcoin over the next decade. But the question here becomes, how do you find them? I willingly opt for logical and clear reasoning when making my choices as opposed to speculating and educated guessing.</p> <p>To me, it is logical that in an ever-increasingly digital and global world, bitcoin reaches the market cap of gold and becomes the store of value standard for governments, corporations, Wall Street, and retail alike. I also believe it is used for borderless, near-instant settlements in a way that gold can never compete with. Think of the United States shipping gold to the UK to settle a trade. How much time, effort, and expense go into that? The answer simply is countless multiples more than if it were a bitcoin transaction.</p> <p>Back to opportunity cost. If you walked to Wall Street banks and told them you had a stock that would logically 10x in a decade, they would kill you for it.</p> <p>Bitcoin is the logical 10x when you frame it in terms of a scarce asset emerging in an ever-increasingly digital world.</p> <p>So, that coffee I paid for this morning at Starbucks, call it $6. In a decade that $6 could be worth $60 if I had opted to purchase bitcoin instead.</p> <p>That pair of pants from the brand you love costs $120 today, but in a decade, that is $1,200 had you opted to just wear the pants you already have.</p> <p>That new car you think you “need” today, where you put down $5,000, cost you an additional $45,000 had you just bought bitcoin. This doesn’t even factor in the increase in insurance and all the monthly car payments you make.</p> <p>I do implore people to live their lives. This is not a monologue stating that you should only defer consumption to the future by throwing all of your dollars into bitcoin. You leave this Earth with nothing. Go on vacation, buy the house for your family, and live the life you want to live. I just want people to be aware that every single decision has an opportunity cost.</p> <p>Opportunity cost is the cost for everything.
