It seems the trick of skilled public organisations is that they know how to engage stakeholders at the appropriate level, set goals, and then make decisions on a tight loop in pursuit of those goals, with clear success metrics.

But there is less of a "natural selection" of the failing public institution, compared to the failing corporate. So mediocrity can prevail.

The incentives are also difficult to align in the public case without rethinking our economics around impact, which leads to various forms of corruption and influence in public.

In private, commercial success is often a useful proxy for having the desired impact for the customer, and can be financially incentivised.

Having said this many of the best decisions in my current context are being made by public institutions, so there is clearly a route to success 2/

Anecdotal, but here's a line of reasoning around good decisions and executive function.

A good decision is not necessarily only measured on correctness, but cycle time and effort to make. With more explicit stakeholders public decision-making is encumbered, and flap deciding is slow and expensive, so batch size increases, leading to slower feedback, less reflection and impaired executive function. 1/

Yes, and if it is the only service provider then it becomes a public liability and utility, and should behave as if public, even if incorporated.

At that point competition having been removed, and the entity so massively (over-)powerful that regulation effects the necessary bargaining power to keep it in check.

Or just making it a public utility.

But our executive functioning in public organisations is often less effective than in private ones, so it's hard.

I thought Total Annihilation would have been there, given Cavedog was part of humongous which got bought by GT then sold to Infogrames that became Atari.

But now I see that Humongous Inc was sold out to Tommo, so maybe that's where it ended up.

Humongous.com has been relaunched, but no sign of cavedog.com revival yet.

Maybe Ron Gilbert (GrumpyGamer) (npub192d…2vay) knows where it's ended up and/or going?
