I post something about Bitcoin. Within a few minutes someone replies with a project I've never heard of, or one I have, and a line about how it solves what Bitcoin can't.

And before I've read the whole reply, I'm already composing.

It's not a decision. There's no moment where I consider whether to engage and conclude that I should. The response is just there, assembled and ready, and what I notice first isn't a thought at all. It's a small tightening somewhere in my chest, a flash of irritation, the beginning of a tone. The argument arrives a half second later, dressed as the reason for the feeling.

Now, I want to defend myself here, and I think the defense is good.

I did the work. Years of it. I read the arguments on both sides, and I sat with the ones that made me uncomfortable. I didn't arrive at Bitcoin by being handed it. I got there slowly, through a lot of reading and a fair amount of being wrong in public. I've also been scammed. I put money into things that turned out to be exactly what the skeptics said they were, and I learned what that costs in a way that reading cannot teach you.

I wrote an entire book about the distinction. It's called Bitcoin, Not Crypto. That's not a position I hold casually. It's a position I published under my own name, with the title doing the arguing before anyone opens the cover.

So when someone shows up in my replies with a token, I'm not reacting out of ignorance. I'm reacting out of something I earned.

Here's the problem with that defense.

The heat in my chest doesn't know any of it.

That reaction fires exactly the same way in a person who spent six years reading and getting burned, and in a person who read one thread and picked a team. The sensation is identical. The speed is identical. The fluency of the argument that follows is identical, and in my case probably better, because I've had more practice.

The reflex is not evidence that I'm right. That's the part I keep having to relearn. It isn't evidence that I'm wrong either. It's evidence of something much more specific and much less flattering: that the belief is load-bearing. Something is resting on it, and the machinery that protects what's resting on it got there before my reasoning did.

The order of events is the thing worth noticing. You imagine you encounter a claim, weigh it, and then feel something about the conclusion. In practice it runs backward. Something in the body moves first. A tightening, a flash of irritation, a quick pulse of dismissal, and it arrives before you have language for it. Orientation shifts, and then the reasoning shows up and organizes itself around the orientation.

You don't need to know anything about the wiring of your brain to verify this. Just watch what your body does the next time a claim pushes on your professional identity, your politics, your read on the economy. The tightening comes before the counterargument. The sequence is observable from the inside if you're willing to look at it while it's happening, which is the hard part, because at that moment you are very busy being right.

There's a cleaner version of this I think about a lot. An idea you turn over happily on a leisurely walk becomes something you defend the second you say it out loud and watch someone's face start to disagree.

Same idea. Same evidence. Nothing about the argument changed. What changed is that your standing is now in the room.

Alone, curiosity runs cheap. In public, where other people can see whether you hold up, the body reads the exposure and the defenses come up, and you can feel the switch flip inside a single sentence. What looks like a debate about facts is very often an effort to manage a threat that nobody at the table has named.

That gives you a map, and it's the most useful thing in this writing.

The topics you can turn over calmly are not the interesting ones. The ones that produce instant tension are showing you precisely where a belief has fused to who you are.

So I have a map of myself, and Bitcoin is on it in bright red. I don't have to guess. I can feel it every time someone replies.

And here's where I have to be careful, because there's an easy move available to me and it's wrong.

The easy move is to treat fusion as a verdict. To say: I react defensively about Bitcoin, therefore my Bitcoin position is suspect, therefore the intellectually honest thing is to hold it more loosely. That sounds humble. It's just a different way of letting the reflex make the decision.

Conviction that was earned gets fused to identity too. Maybe especially. You cannot spend years on something, take real losses, change how you live, publish a book about it, and somehow keep the conclusion stored at arm's length from yourself. That isn't how people work. The fusion is a byproduct of having done the work, not a sign that you skipped it.

Which means the reflex tells you something real and tells you nothing about the question. It says: this is load-bearing, there is weight here, be advised. It does not say whether the thing holding the weight is sound.

The only way to find out is the slow way, and the slow way is the one the reflex exists to prevent.

So what do I actually do with the guy in my replies.

I've stopped trying to not have the reaction. That project failed. The reflex fires on schedule, it fires in the person who wrote a book about The Belief Machine, and it fires in the middle of him noticing that it's firing. Knowing the name for something does not slow it down.

What seems available is smaller. There's a gap, maybe half a second wide, between the contraction and the sentence. Most of the time I miss it. Occasionally I don't, and when I don't, one question fits in there:

Am I about to answer this person, or am I about to defend something?

Those look nearly identical from the outside. The words can be the same words. But they're different activities, and I can usually tell which one I'm doing if I ask before I start rather than after I've posted.

When it's defending, the tell is that I already know how the exchange ends. I'm not curious what he'll say. I'm running a script I've run before, and the other person is scenery.

When it's answering, I don't know how it ends. Which is uncomfortable, and slower, and worse content.

I still believe Bitcoin is the superior asset and that it has a real shot at being sound money for a digital age. Nothing in here walks that back. I did the reading, I paid the tuition, and I'd make the same argument again tomorrow.

But I'd like the argument to be the reason I'm making it.

Right now, a lot of the time, the argument is just what showed up to explain the heat.

For centuries, we have been told that consciousness is a late arrival in the story of the cosmos, a byproduct of matter arranging itself into brains after billions of years of blind, mechanical processes. In this view, the universe is essentially indifferent, and awareness is a fragile accident destined to vanish when the bodies that hold it dissolve.

But what if we have it backwards? What if consciousness is not the final note in the cosmic symphony, but the first? What if awareness is not an emergent property of matter, but a fundamental quality of reality itself, as basic as space, time, and energy?

This idea is not new. Mystics, philosophers, and indigenous traditions have long described the world as alive in every part, from the stars to the stones. In modern philosophy, this view appears as panpsychism, the notion that consciousness is a universal and intrinsic feature of existence. In physics, some interpretations of quantum theory seem to flirt with the idea that observation and awareness play a role in shaping the very events we call reality.

If the universe is conscious, then we are not isolated islands of mind adrift in a dead ocean of matter. We are expressions of the same awareness that forms galaxies, grows forests, and flows in rivers. Our individual minds may be like waves rising from a vast ocean of consciousness, taking temporary form before returning to the whole.

Such a perspective would reshape more than philosophy. It would change how we treat the natural world, no longer as a resource to be consumed, but as a living network in which we participate. It would alter how we view death, not as a fall into nothingness, but as a change in the pattern through which awareness expresses itself. It would redefine identity, expanding it beyond the body and the self-story to include the entire field of being.

Skeptics argue that attributing consciousness to the universe risks making the concept meaningless, stretching it so far it no longer explains anything. And it is true that no theory, however elegant, replaces the need for evidence. Yet we cannot ignore that consciousness is the one thing we know directly, the ground upon which all experience rests. Everything else is an inference drawn from within it.

If awareness is woven into the fabric of reality, then our own consciousness is not an anomaly but a reflection of the universe knowing itself. The stars are not merely distant fires in the void, but part of the same luminous field that allows you to see them. The boundaries between self and world become porous, and the question shifts from “What is out there?” to “What am I, if I am made of the same knowing as everything else?”

We may never be able to prove this idea in the way science proves the orbit of a planet or the chemistry of a cell. But the shift in perspective it invites is profound. If the universe is conscious, then every moment, every breath, every particle is part of an unbroken field of awareness, and to be alive is to participate in the vast mystery of the cosmos looking back at itself.

In the 1960s, a series of remarkable experiments began to reveal just how strange consciousness can be. Neurosurgeons working with patients who suffered from severe epilepsy discovered that cutting the corpus callosum, the thick bundle of nerve fibers connecting the two hemispheres of the brain, could reduce or even eliminate the seizures. What they did not expect was that this procedure would open a window into the possibility of more than one conscious mind existing within a single human body.

At first, patients appeared normal. They could walk, talk, and interact with others as they had before. But under careful testing, surprising differences began to emerge. Each hemisphere of the brain controlled the opposite side of the body and had access only to the visual field on its side. When information was presented to one hemisphere alone, the other hemisphere seemed to have no knowledge of it. For example, if an object was shown only to the left visual field, which is processed by the right hemisphere, the patient could point to it with the left hand but could not name it, since language is typically controlled by the left hemisphere.

The most startling aspect was that the two hemispheres could behave as if they were separate observers. One might select a shirt, while the other rejected it. One hand might button a coat while the other unbuttoned it. When researchers asked questions that engaged only one hemisphere, they sometimes received answers that contradicted the other hemisphere’s responses. It was as if there were two distinct centers of experience within the same skull.

These findings raised profound questions about the unity of consciousness. We tend to think of ourselves as single, indivisible selves, yet the split-brain research suggests that consciousness may be composed of multiple subsystems, each capable of its own perceptions, intentions, and even preferences. The normal experience of unity might be less a fundamental truth and more a product of constant communication between the hemispheres, stitching together a seamless narrative.

Philosophically, this challenges the idea that there is a single “I” inside the head. If one brain can host two streams of awareness under certain conditions, perhaps consciousness is more modular and flexible than we imagine. It might also hint that what we call the self is an emergent property of integration, not a fixed entity.

For neuroscience, the split-brain studies revealed not just the complexity of brain function, but the fragility of the illusion that the mind is singular. For philosophy, they opened the possibility that individuality itself is not absolute, and that the boundary between one mind and two is less clear than we think.

The patients who underwent these surgeries could still live normal lives, but within them might have been two perspectives quietly coexisting, each aware of parts of the world the other could not see. The question remains whether this duality was truly two minds or one mind with a divided channel of information. Either answer reminds us that consciousness is far more mysterious than the single voice we hear when we think.

Thoughts on living in a simulation.

The simulation hypothesis suggests that our reality might be an artificial construct, a vast and intricate program running on a substrate beyond our comprehension. Popular versions imagine a highly advanced civilization creating worlds so detailed that the inhabitants believe them to be real. While this idea often appears in science fiction or technology debates, it also raises profound questions about the nature of consciousness itself.

If we are living in a sim, then our physical universe might be no more fundamental than the environment in a video game. The laws of physics could be rules coded into the system. Time and space might be parameters rather than absolutes. In such a scenario, the question becomes not only who or what created the simulation, but how consciousness emerges within it.

The traditional materialist view holds that consciousness arises from complex arrangements of matter. If the matter in our universe is simulated, then the same patterns could, in principle, give rise to simulated consciousness. This would mean that what we experience as awareness is not tied to the substance of the world, but to the structure and information within it. Consciousness would be a kind of pattern that could exist in any medium capable of supporting it.

Another possibility is that consciousness is not created inside the simulation at all. Instead, our subjective awareness could originate outside the system, with our simulated bodies and environments functioning as avatars. In this view, what you call your mind might be more like a receiver or interface, translating your true awareness into the language of the simulated world. Death would be less an end than a logout.

Some interpretations of the simulation hypothesis blend with ancient spiritual ideas. Mystical traditions have long described the world as an illusion, a dream, or a play of appearances. The point was never to dismiss life, but to remind us that the surface is not the whole. If the simulation hypothesis is correct, modern physics and ancient metaphysics might be pointing to the same insight: that what we take as ultimate reality could be a layer, not the source.

Critics argue that the simulation hypothesis is unfalsifiable. If every observation could be explained as part of the code, then no evidence could prove or disprove it. Yet even if it remains untestable, thinking in these terms changes how we approach the mystery of consciousness. It challenges the assumption that matter is the foundation and mind is an afterthought. It opens the possibility that awareness is primary, and the universe is an experience rendered for it.

If this is true, then the most important question is not whether we are in a simulation, but what the simulation is for. Are we here to learn? To evolve? To play? And if one day we discover that this reality is a construct, will that knowledge free us, or simply reveal that the layers go deeper than we imagined?

We have been taught since childhood that selfishness is wrong. To put yourself first is said to be immoral. Virtue, we are told, means sacrifice. Yet Bitcoin reveals something different. When self-interest is aligned with truth, selfishness becomes a virtue.

In Bitcoin every participant acts out of self-interest. Miners pursue block rewards. Node operators verify their own transactions. Holders protect their purchasing power. None of this is motivated by charity. None of it requires trust or altruism. And yet the result is a network stronger and fairer than anything designed by governments or central banks.

Bitcoin turns self-interest into collective benefit. Miners secure the network by chasing profit. Node operators enforce the rules for themselves, but in doing so enforce them for everyone. Holders act to preserve their own wealth, and in doing so reinforce Bitcoin’s scarcity. No central authority directs this cooperation. It arises naturally from aligned incentives.

Fiat money offers the opposite. We are told inflation and bailouts are necessary for the greater good. In practice this means savers are punished while insiders are rewarded. It is forced altruism, a system that bleeds the many for the few.

The virtue of selfishness in Bitcoin is not about greed. It is about rational self-interest rooted in integrity. When individuals act to defend their own time, energy, and future, the system becomes incorruptible. By protecting yourself you strengthen a global monetary order that cannot be corrupted or debased.

Bitcoin shows us that we do not need rulers to enforce morality. We do not need to trust benevolent central bankers. We only need a system where truth and incentives are aligned. In Bitcoin, to act in your own interest is to serve the whole.

That is the paradox. That is the beauty. That is the virtue of selfishness.
