Just learned about Robin Ince (npub1gd4…npt3) having to leave The Infinite Monkey Cage, and I’m so sad for him and for us all.

There are simply too many monsters with too much power in this country/world. Robin shouldn’t have had to stop what he was doing at the BBC at all, but I’m glad he chose to step away from that increasingly troubled platform rather than have his work diminished.

I saw him play in his home town when he was only sixteen, and his talent with a guitar simply needs to be witnessed to be believed.

oh for sure. But I also think generalisations aren’t necessarily harmful. And even with your example of, say, Swedish or Italian food, I’d definitely say they’re both identifiable as broadly European and worth celebrating!

…And I do also wish we were better at specifying regions of Indian or other south Asian cuisine here in the UK… if I knew the restaurant up the road was particularly focussed on, I dunno, food from Rajasthan, say, I’d be more likely to look in, no question.

Food in gujurat was… very much unlike anything I’ve ever eaten! Sri Lanka had some of the nicest things I’ve ever tasted, but my goodness they don’t half appreciate some heat!

It's a shame that these accumulated, layered spaces often veer into the actually unsafe. Take this example of a fondouk in Marrakech, for instance.

It's clearly structurally unsound, and probably a huge fire risk. But I still find the obvious visual presence of so many potential stories in it completely fascinating.

I turned it into a screen print as part of an evening class I was taking, once. Must revisit that craft some time.

Don't get me wrong - I love a beautifully made and carefully considered bit of facade too. (Hell, I've put decades into designing them!)

...But there's something about the aesthetics of when a space is overtaken by the unintended or unconsidered. The additions of not just a living, thinking designer, but small extra layer upon small extra layer of living, thinking, occupants. I find it thrilling, and something we can appreciate and learn from.

Since I'm now thinking about them, a few more pictures of walls of crap, from the archives.

Honestly I absolutely adore these moments, but it's hard to describe exactly why.

I think it's something along the lines of how they express a history of absolutely functional interventions with an almost complete disregard for an overall aesthetic whole. And yet somehow the derived palimpsest of additions becomes exactly that.

I lived in Bristol in the very early 2000s and decided to buy my first bike as a grownup (from the Edinburgh Bike Co-op, as it happens) after enjoying the opening titles of Teachers and realising it could be me hurtling around Cumberland Basin or the like.
