I've observed a few posting on the topic of digital IDs this past week and been meaning to elaborate on this as Insee it as a fundamentally important step we are making.

Basically you already have credit scores in the US or actual social scores in other countries like China. Digital IDs are going to happen whether we like it or not and the main issue from my perspective is the individual needs to be in control of their own ID and not hand it over to a gov or corpo. This is basically the core of why nostr was build anyway so we should actually be leading this discussion.

Why this needs to happen is because of AI and how will we (or AI) distinguish between something human created because in 5 years even pros are going to not know unless we build a filter into the system now. So basically some sort of scoring system is necessary and what is being argued about is just implementation.

To be clear, we are not debating pro vs con on the issue of digital ID. The only discussion is around their implementation.

Nostr has been slowly building a layered approach to this. You cryptographic key pair at the foundation. NIP5 ID verifications. Paid relays (which require a lightning transaction to join). This is just some of the basics here and ideas for additional implementations is welcome as we are an open source and decentralized community.

Point here is we are building something were you have full control of your ID here and there is a scaling system that does grade your engagement. These rules are not entirely hard set and in cases can be completely bypassed but the key point again is this is a protocol where you are in control of your experience. And the more you engage with the protocol the more it becomes part of you.

Whilst it is the case you might get some 'useless' research but practically speaking, this is part of the buraeucracy of the research process. It something that is likely to happen."

The changes to offset this tradeoff involve changing the lower stages of the educational system i.e. elementary and high school such that there is two systems where one is a pipeline towards research centers and the other is a pipeline to jobs such as accountants, tradesman etc. This research system could be implemented via suggesting to the parents of the child that this person has a particular talent which could be utilised in specialist schools which train the kid into working on his/her special talent. Meanwhile the other system could be a certification system with the basic literacy test attached to it. This cerificiation system could include pipelines to 'high status' jobs such as consultancy and other jobs without entering university. Now some might say, there are jobs that do require a level of university education and the certification system could adjust to this with specific high status jobs that require university education being attached to specific ladders within the certification system. For example an IT technician who doesn't necessarily need university education who has a certificate could use his ceritfication to unlock the next door to higher status job that actually requires university education."

In fact many uni students have forgotten the technical knowledge they had before after they've been involved in jobs that haven't reinforced the remembrance of such technical knowledge. In other words, what you've ended up with an excess supply of 'qualified' people who don't have the practical skills and who don't what they did in even high school. Looking at the jobs of today, even people in elementary school are capable of doing the jobs that many adults are doing now. Even in the technical positions, a lot of employers do actually train their employees. Therefore the utility of mass worldly education is in question. Some traditionalists have compared modern schools to what prussia did where they believed modern schools are training camps of state-loyalists. Some others argue that modern schools are training children to become loyal workers. Yet in the case of modern schools this isn't even the case where teachers are attacked by the children and modern schools are actually training children to become researchers or professors rather than someone who works at engineering or some applied field where modern schools focuses a lot on the theoretical knowledge. So the argument that you need mass education to get into highly technical positions isn't entirely accurate. Now this isn't to say that 'theoretical knowledge is useless', you do need know basic arithmetic, literacy etc. Now some are saying, 'What do you suggest?'. There are multiples things that have been suggested by other people which are the following: make sure young children have basic level of education (basic arithmetic, basic literacy and basic general knowledge), privatize schools (Even in south korea, people pay high amount of tuitions fees meaning there are parents willing to pay their child's education), encourage a certificate system of different levels (which could involve exemptions of exams for those who left a specific level of schooling such as high school etc), change the perception towards universities from being associated with STEM jobs towards it being more associated with intellectualism and research, encourage and improve the reputation of trade schools.”
