My first university psychology class asserted that human behavior would eventually be as predictable as the motion of physical bodies — that psychological laws exist outside our understanding, waiting to be discovered by the scientific method. I have always had trouble accepting that premise and have seen little evidence that such laws exist or are forthcoming. Henrich's book helped me understand why, and gave me better tools for thinking about what does exist in their place.

The relevant framework is Complex Adaptive Systems — nonlinear, self-organizing processes whose emergent properties cannot be derived from the properties of their constituents. What Henrich introduces, and what I find most clarifying, is culture as one such system: not a product of human intelligence or intent, but an evolved complexity that has developed faster, and with more direct consequences for us, than the biological evolution of our species. Culture is not what we make. Culture is what makes us — calibrating our attention, our perceptions, our motivations, and our reasoning to fit the worlds in which we grow up, worlds we did not design and largely do not understand.

The connection to network theory is direct. Communication, from its Latin root, means to make common, to impart, to unite. Dynamic communication — the activity Luhmann identified as the self-reproducing element of any social system — is what network theory calls edges: connections between nodes. Those connections may be physical forces, biological appetites, or societal authorities. What they share is that the information flowing through them may be less essential to the process than the connections themselves. The cohesion of nodes through connections is what allows stable complexity to appear, to be shared in language, and to persist. Where connections are lost, stable complexity is lost with them.

This reframes what Henrich calls the Collective Brain. There is no collective brain — only culturally produced individual brains, and the connections among them that allow know-how to accumulate, transmit, and recombine across generations. The process works not through intelligence or reasoning but through mimicry: we learn from prestigious individuals, those who have succeeded in the world we find ourselves in, and we do so automatically, unconsciously, and with a fidelity that exceeds what rational analysis would recommend. Henrich's most counterintuitive and most important finding is that placing faith in cultural inheritance over personal intuition has been, for most of human history, the more reliable survival strategy. Culture is smarter than any individual who carries it. That is not a comforting thought. It is a clarifying one.

The word for poet in Greek is ποίησις — making, the activity by which something is brought into being that did not exist before. Henrich describes cultural evolution as precisely this kind of making: unintelligent, undeliberate, unintended. What poets, in the broad sense, bring into being are the concepts that allow experience to be held in attention and shared in understanding. The success of a concept is not determined by its truth but by its ability to facilitate connections — to produce novel ways of surviving in the world and transmitting that understanding. Language and mathematics are products of this process. So are theology, social norms, and kinship structures. All of them precede and shape the individual cognition that subsequently attempts to explain them.

What Henrich does not sufficiently emphasize, though his framework implies it, is that culture as a complex adaptive system necessarily generates its own fluctuations. Stable order is not the end state — it is one phase in an ongoing process of emergence, stability, fluctuation, and re-emergence. The communication technologies of our time — social media, global networks, rapid connection formation — are introducing feedback loops comparable to those produced by the alphabet and the printing press. Those earlier disruptions gave rise to the Golden Age and the Renaissance. What the current disruption will select for is not predictable, because new order is not created. It emerges. We participate in the process without being able to direct it, and we rationalize the result only after it has stabilized into the next common understanding.

I find myself optimistic about this, though I hold the optimism carefully. The theories of Complex Adaptive Systems suggest that emergence of order is tied to the destruction of the status quo — Kali's work, as the mythology has it, is necessary for Shiva's renewal. What gives me cautious grounds for optimism is the possibility that free speech and free association, by allowing for the diversity and differential success that selection requires, may have themselves become the evolved mechanism for navigating these transitions with less of the historical violence. That free association has produced the conditions for its own survival seems to me more plausible than its opposite. Just an inkling. But one I find worth holding.

What started as an offline seed generation and verification tool has grown into a broader Bitcoin toolbox: PSBT inspection, descriptor and miniscript analysis, Lightning invoice decoding, BIP-353 helper, signed-message verification, Silent Payments, Shamir backup, and BIP-329 wallet labels, all bundled into the same single signed HTML file.

The seed-related core hasn't changed. Generate, verify, derive, recover, all still fully offline. What v2.3.0 adds is a bunch of standalone tools that you can use without a seed loaded at all. A few of them have optional online features (BIP-353 Resolve, BIP-47 PayNym lookup) that are clearly marked and always opt-in. Everything else still runs locally.

Open the file once, save it to disk, verify the signature, run it on whatever machine you want.

New tools

PSBT Inspector

Paste a Partially Signed Bitcoin Transaction (base64 or hex). See every input, every output, fee, derivation paths, signatures, what's still required to finalise. Same content you'd see on a block explorer's PSBT view, without uploading anything.

Miniscript Lab

Paste a policy, a miniscript, or a full output descriptor (Liana, Nunchuk, Sparrow, Bitcoin Core, anything BIP-380 / BIP-389). The tool compiles to Bitcoin Script, runs sanity checks, enumerates every way the script can be spent, and renders the spend paths as a visual timeline so you can see at a glance which keys are active now and which activate after a timelock.

Lightning Decoder

Both BOLT-11 invoices and BOLT-12 offers / invoices / invoice requests. Pure local parse. Amount, payment hash, route hints, blinded paths, all decoded cleanly.

BIP-353 DNS Payment Helper

Build a name@domain style payment endpoint, decode any bitcoin: URI back into its components, or resolve a real BIP-353 record via DNS-over-HTTPS. The Build and Inspect tabs are fully offline. Resolve is an opt-in online tab that hits a public DoH resolver. Both paths are obvious about which is which.

BIP-329 Wallet Labels

Shamir Secret Sharing

Split your seed into m-of-n shares. SLIP-39, SSKR both supported. Pick whichever format your wallet uses, reconstruct from any valid threshold.

Seed Phrase Recovery

Fix typos, fill in missing words, unscramble order, or convert hex / binary / indexes back into a valid BIP-39 mnemonic. Address-constrained search so you only get answers that actually produce your address.

Beyond the tools

A bunch of UX work too:

Education layer. A consistent purple visual style for educational content (per-tool explainers, info popups, the 9-step Learn walkthrough). Functional bits stay blue. You can tell at a glance what's "this is what this means" vs "this is the actual tool."

Demo data on every standalone tool. One click loads a known-good sample (BOLT-11 spec test vector, real PSBT, sample BIP-329 labels, etc.) so you can see what the tool does without finding your own input.

Quick test seed flow. Tap a locked card without a seed loaded, modal offers to generate a quick random test seed for exploring, or jump to the Seed Workspace.

Tool search on the home page. Type / to focus, Esc to clear.

Online warning banner. Clear, dismissible warning under the topbar when a network connection is detected. Explicitly acknowledges that BIP-353 Resolve and BIP-47 PayNym are online by design and won't work otherwise. Tor and hardened-browser users get a heads-up about false positives.

A note on how this got built

I used Claude heavily across this release. Most of the new tools, the visual redesign, the spend-path timelines, the demo data flows. I designed and led the work, then iterated with Claude as a fast pair programmer.

I need help testing

Specific things I'd love eyes on:

Miniscript Lab vs your real Liana / Nunchuk descriptors. Paste a test descriptor (please, not one protecting real funds) and tell me if anything fails to parse or if the spend-paths visualisation looks wrong.

PSBT Inspector vs hardware-wallet flows. Send a PSBT from Coldcard / Passport / Trezor through it and confirm the inputs, outputs, derivations, and fee match what the device shows.

BIP-353 Resolve. If you have a working name@domain record (or know one), try resolving it and confirm the URI fields decode correctly.

Sign & Verify with BIP-322. Any address type, any wallet. The Taproot path is especially worth poking at.

Mobile. I tested what I could, but I never test enough on mobile. Let me know if anything looks broken.

We all know this. We've all seen LLMs make a mistake, correct it, just to make the same mistake again. Or end up in a lobotomized infinite loop of "oh no you're absolutely right" responses.

LLMs are not the efficient frontier.

World models are forced to learn the "physics" of the world during training. They do this purely by observing interactions with the world. World models observe, plan, predict, and take an action.

And they are efficient. Unlike LLMs they present an opportunity for building agents with the ability to learn throughout their life. I've trained a world model of a Snake game on a MacBook (Yann Lecun JEPA style) in just half an hour. After watching me play for a bit and generating many random interactions, the world model is better than most human players.

The hammock that most people picture when the word comes up is the wrong hammock. Two wooden sticks at the ends, a flat canvas slab strung between them, the whole thing hanging in the yard at a summer cottage. You climb in, the canvas folds you in half at the hips, your back curves into a banana, and after twenty minutes your spine is screaming. That object is responsible for the entire reputation hammocks have as a thing you nap in for half an hour and then quietly retire to the shed. Throw it away. It is the worst sleeping technology ever marketed under the hammock name.

The right hammock is the Mexican matrimonial, woven from thin cotton strings into a fine net, with a sleeping surface around four meters wide. No sticks, no spreader bars, just two end-loops gathered into a point, with thousands of fine threads fanning out between them into a lattice you could lose a fist in. When you lie in it the net spreads to take your shape. The width is the whole point. You sleep across it, diagonally, with your head at one end of the woven field and your feet at the other corner, so your body lies almost flat. The diagonal lay is the secret that the stick-hammock hides from you. With four meters of width, the diagonal is long enough that a tall adult lies straight, spine neutral, shoulders flat, hips uncompressed.

A matrimonial spreads pressure across the whole body. A mattress, even a good one, supports you at the shoulders and hips and ribs and forces the rest of your soft tissue to hang in between. The hammock supports every square centimeter of the body simultaneously, because the net deforms continuously around you. The contact pressure at any single point is a small fraction of what a mattress applies. People with bad backs and bad shoulders sleep in these things and wake up without the usual grinding. I have slept in matrimonial hammocks across four continents and the shoulder kink I used to fight every morning on a soft mattress has been gone for years.

Then there is the space. A bed, even a folding one, owns the room it sits in. The room is organized around it during the day whether you are sleeping or not. You walk around the bed. You step over the bed. The bed eats two square meters of floor and lives there permanently. A matrimonial hammock weighs about a kilogram and hangs from a carabiner clipped to a wall anchor on each side. Unclipping the carabiner takes a second. In the morning you reach up, pop the loop off, gather the whole sleeping system into a small bundle, and the room is empty. Floor space returns. The room becomes whatever you need that day, office or workshop or yoga floor or living room. At night the hammock comes back out and the room becomes a bedroom again. One room, two functions, zero compromise on either.

For people living in vehicles the math is even better. A bed in a van or a truck is a permanent platform that costs you roughly half of your interior volume. You either build over it or sit on it as a couch and call that a substitute for floor space. A hammock strung between two anchor points on opposite walls takes the same air that was already there. During the day you unclip it and the back of the vehicle becomes the full empty box it was designed to be. I have lived in a vehicle this way and the volume difference compared to friends with built-in beds is dramatic. Their dwelling is a bedroom with a kitchenette pinched into one end. Mine is a workshop that becomes a bedroom for eight hours a night and reverts to a workshop in the morning.

The one real downside is temperature. Your back is exposed to air with empty space underneath where a mattress would insulate. In cold weather that heat loss matters. The fix is easy. A wool blanket or a sheepskin laid into the hammock under your body solves it cleanly. The wool insulates the back while the diagonal lay still works the same way. In a heated room or a warm climate the cotton net by itself is enough. Below about fifteen degrees Celsius indoor temperature, lay something woolen under you and the problem disappears. Once you have done it twice the routine is automatic.

The other downsides people imagine mostly evaporate on contact. Two people fit in a matrimonial, hence the name; the width is genuinely enough for a couple to sleep diagonally in opposite directions without touching. Reading, eating breakfast in bed, working from the laptop in the morning all work fine, since the net adapts to whatever shape you sit in. Sex works, with a learning curve. The activities that need a hard flat surface still exist, and a hammock-room arrangement assumes you keep a yoga mat or a thin foam pad rolled in the corner for those.

Buying one is the part where most people get it wrong, because the market is full of decorative hammocks sold as the real thing. The matrimonial you want is hand-woven, four meters wide or more in the sleeping field, made of fine cotton, with thousands of threads in the weave where the cheap versions have hundreds. Cheap tourist versions sold in beach shops have a coarse weave that digs into the back, and a sleeping field of two meters that forces you back into the banana posture. The good ones come from the Yucatán and are sold by weight as much as by size. Expect to pay between forty and a hundred dollars from the cooperatives that still make them by hand. The investment buys you a sleeping system that lasts a decade and does for your back what every mattress fails to do.

Hang it correctly. The end-loops should sit at roughly chest-height when the bottom of the hammock sags about halfway between floor and hook. Pull it tight and the net cannot spread; leave it slack and you sit in a bag. The two anchor points should be far enough apart that the hammock keeps a gentle curve and stays unstrained. Forged wall hooks or carabiners through ceiling anchors both work; the load is your body weight times a multiplier from the angle, so the hardware needs a rating in the several hundred kilogram range even if you weigh seventy. Once the geometry is right, the diagonal lay falls into place automatically and the first night in it tells you everything the rest of this post has been arguing.

Most people sleeping on mattresses have never tried a real net hammock, and assume the experience would feel like the bad summer-cottage version. It feels like a different category of object, sold under the same name by accident of language. Spend a hundred dollars and two hours hanging it, and you find out within a week whether your back agrees with the rest of mine. Mine does completely, and I have slept in a hammock by preference for years.

George Orwell hat sich 1948 hingesetzt und versucht, sich das Schlimmste auszudenken, was einer Gesellschaft passieren kann. Heraus kam "1984". Bildschirme in jeder Wohnung, die zuhören. Eine Sprache, in der bestimmte Gedanken nicht mehr gedacht werden können. Eine Behörde, die Geschichte umschreibt. Menschen, die einander denunzieren, aus Angst und aus Überzeugung zugleich.

Ich habe das Buch gelesen und beim Zuklappen festgestellt: Orwell hatte zu wenig Fantasie. Wir haben sein dunkelstes Szenario längst überholt. Mit Anlauf. Mit Applaus. Mit zwei Jahren Vertrag.

Das, was Orwell sich nicht zu denken traute

In Orwells Welt hängt der Teleschirm an der Wand. Man kann sich, wenn man Glück hat, kurz aus seinem Blickfeld bewegen. Im Bad zum Beispiel. Im Schlaf. Beim Spaziergang.

Wir haben das gelöst. Unser Teleschirm wandert mit. In die Küche, ins Bett, ins Bad, auf die Toilette. Er weiß, wo ich bin, wie schnell ich gehe, wann ich stehengeblieben bin, in welcher Position ich schlafe, wie hoch mein Puls beim Streit mit meinem Partner war. Er hört das Gespräch im Auto. Er liest mit beim Tippen. Er wertet aus, wann ich glücklich bin, wann gestresst, wann krank werde – manchmal früher als ich selbst.

Niemand musste uns das Gerät aufzwingen. Wir stehen Schlange, wenn ein neues herauskommt. Wir verteidigen es vor Kritik. Wir würden uns nackt fühlen ohne. Genau genommen: wir sind nackt mit. Aber das wissen wir entweder nicht oder wir wollen es nicht wissen.

Orwell hat sich einen Staat ausgedacht, der seine Bürger überwacht. Wir haben uns einen Markt ausgedacht, der das viel besser kann – und der den Staat dann gleich mit beliefert. Beides gleichzeitig. Beides freiwillig. Beides verkauft als Fortschritt.

Die Mechanik aus "Farm der Tiere"

Wer "1984" gelesen hat, weiß, wie Diktatur aussieht. Wer wissen will, wie sie entsteht, muss "Farm der Tiere" lesen.

Da befreien sich die Tiere von einem schlechten Bauern. Sie schreiben Regeln an die Scheunenwand. Alle Tiere sind gleich. Sie meinen es ernst. Sie sind glücklich. Sie haben ihre Freiheit selbst erkämpft.

Dann passieren kleine Verschiebungen. Eine Regel wird leicht umformuliert, nachts. Eine Ausnahme wird gemacht, für den, der ja so viel arbeitet. Eine Bequemlichkeit wird eingeführt, weil es ja praktisch ist. Am Ende steht an der Scheunenwand: Alle Tiere sind gleich, aber manche sind gleicher als andere. Und niemand kann mehr genau sagen, wann das passiert ist.

Genau dort sind wir. Wir sind nicht in 1984. Wir sind in der zweiten Hälfte von "Farm der Tiere". In der Phase, in der die Versprechen schon umformuliert werden, aber an den Wänden noch die alten Sprüche kleben. Demokratie. Selbstbestimmung. Datenschutz. Freiwilligkeit. Steht alles noch da. Wird alles noch gesagt. Bedeutet alles schon längst etwas anderes.

Die digitale Identität – das Brett für die Scheune

Die EU baut gerade an der EUDI-Wallet. Eine digitale Brieftasche auf dem Smartphone, in die Ausweis, Führerschein, Diplome, Krankenversicherung, Bankdaten und mehr hineinwandern sollen. Bis Ende 2026 soll jedes Mitgliedsland sie anbieten. Offiziell freiwillig.

Österreich hat die ID Austria. Deutschland baut. Ab 2027 müssen öffentliche Stellen die Wallet akzeptieren, ein Jahr später Banken, Telekommunikation, Gesundheit und große Plattformen wie Amazon. Auf dem Papier darf niemand benachteiligt werden, der keine Wallet nutzt. Auf dem Papier.

In der Praxis kennen wir das Spiel schon. Sperrmüll geht nur mit App. Stundenplan des Kindes geht nur mit ID. Bankkonto wird einfacher mit Smartphone. Steuererklärung lieber digital. Arzttermin über Portal. Jedes einzelne Beispiel klingt vernünftig. Praktisch. Modern. Wer wollte da widersprechen.

Aber die Summe ist etwas anderes als die einzelnen Teile. Die Summe ist: Du bekommst gleich einen Schlüssel, mit dem du dich überall identifizierst, der dich überall hinterlässt, der dich überall sichtbar macht. Ein Schlüssel, der auch ein Schloss ist. Wenn der Schlüssel mal nicht funktioniert – Akku leer, Update fehlgeschlagen, Konto gesperrt, Score zu schlecht –, dann öffnet sich nichts mehr. Kein Schalter, kein Konto, kein Zug, kein Arzt.

Das ist keine Verschwörungstheorie. Das ist eine Architektur. Sie wird gerade gebaut, vor unseren Augen, mit unseren Daten, mit unserer Zustimmung. Wer in fünf Jahren sagt, das hat doch keiner kommen sehen, der hat in den letzten zwei nicht hingeschaut.

Die zwei Lager

Während die Architektur entsteht, wird das Land sortiert. Wer falsche Fragen stellt, ist nicht mehr jemand mit einer anderen Meinung. Er ist auffällig geworden. Querdenker. Schwurbler. Wahrscheinlich rechts.

Der Mechanismus ist erschreckend einfach. Wer anders denkt als ich, ist rechts. Damit ist alles erledigt. Kein Argument mehr nötig, keine Frage mehr zulässig, kein Gespräch mehr möglich. Ein Wort, eine Schublade, Klappe zu. Es spielt keine Rolle mehr, was du gesagt hast. Es spielt nur noch eine Rolle, in welchem Lager du ab jetzt geführt wirst.

In "Farm der Tiere" gibt es genau diesen Moment. Snowball, der unbequeme Denker, wird zum Feind erklärt. Alles Schlechte wird ihm angelastet. Sein Name reicht, um eine Diskussion zu beenden. Wer ihn verteidigt, wird zum nächsten Snowball.

Bei uns heißt das Tier anders. Der Mechanismus ist derselbe. Und er funktioniert.

Was sie verkaufen, was wir bezahlen

Verkauft wird das alles immer mit denselben Worten. Bequemer. Schneller. Moderner. Sicherer. Im Werbevideo der EU-Kommission winken lächelnde Menschen mit ihrem Smartphone in eine glitzernde Zukunft. Reisepass vom Sofa. Wohnsitz in drei Klicks. Keine langen Wartezeiten am Amt.

Bezahlt wird mit etwas, das im Werbevideo nicht vorkommt. Mit der eigenen Identität, lückenlos auswertbar. Mit der Möglichkeit, sich zu entziehen, die immer kleiner wird. Mit dem Recht, einfach in Ruhe gelassen zu werden, das in keinem Gesetz mehr steht. Mit der Freiheit, falsch zu denken, ohne dafür auf einer Liste zu landen.

Es ist gewollt. Brüssel weiß, was es baut. Regierungen wissen, was sie kaufen. Konzerne wissen, was sie verdienen. Und gleichzeitig ist es zugelassen. Von Millionen Menschen, die müde sind, die kein Verschwörungsdenker sein wollen, die einfach ihren Sperrmüll loswerden, ihr Kind zur Schule schicken, ihr Bankkonto eröffnen wollen. Die jeden Tag aus Erschöpfung klicken, was sie eigentlich nicht klicken wollten.

Beides ist wahr. Es wird oben gebaut, und unten getragen. Ohne das eine geht das andere nicht.

Die Wand, an der die Sprüche stehen

An den Wänden hängen noch die alten Sprüche. Demokratie. Selbstbestimmung. Datenschutz. Grundrechte. Freiwilligkeit.

Sie sind nicht weg. Sie werden nur leise umformuliert, nachts, von Händen, die wir nicht sehen. Eine Verordnung hier, eine Durchführungsbestimmung dort, eine "technische Anpassung" da. Niemand klebt sie ab. Niemand muss. Sie bedeuten irgendwann einfach etwas anderes.

Und eines Morgens stehen wir vor der Scheunenwand und lesen, was schon längst dort steht:

Alle Bürger sind frei. Aber manche sind freier als andere.

Wer das nicht sehen will, hat noch ein bisschen Zeit. Aber nicht mehr lange.

There is a particular kind of cowardice dressed up in respectable clothes. It wears the face of politeness. Of staying in your lane. Of not wanting to cause trouble, not wanting to lose friends, not wanting to be the one who makes things awkward at the dinner table.

And it's destroying us.

I've watched people witness fraud and say nothing. I've watched professionals nod along to policies they knew were wrong. I've watched entire communities look away while their neighbors were being crushed, by corrupt systems, by captured institutions, by outright lies dressed up as public health, public safety, public good. The machinery of control doesn't just rely on enforcers. It relies on bystanders. It needs your silence. It counts on it.

Simon & Garfunkel wrote about this in 1964. "Silence like a cancer grows" - four words that have aged into prophecy. They were writing about a society so seduced by comfort and spectacle that it had forgotten how to speak. How to really speak. Not perform, not signal, not post, but stand up, tell the truth, and accept the consequences.

That was sixty years ago. Look around.

We are living through a period of coordinated, institutionalized deception on a scale most people still can't bring themselves to name out loud. The financial system is built on debt that can never be repaid. The health system spent years prioritizing compliance over care and turning sickness into a business model. Governments surveil their own populations and call it safety. Platforms silence doctors, journalists, and ordinary people and call it moderation and safety. And most people, educated, decent, well-meaning people, said nothing. Some because they are scared. Some because they genuinely don't know. And some because knowing is uncomfortable, and comfort is addictive.

Silence is never neutral. Every time a person who knows the truth chooses not to say it, they hand a little more power to the people who are lying. Every time someone watches something wrong happen and looks away, they make it easier for it to happen again. The absence of resistance is a form of consent, whether we intend it that way or not.

What we need right now, urgently, are people willing to be inconvenient. Willing to be unpopular. Willing to lose something. Whistleblowers. Truth-tellers. The colleague who won't sign off on the report they know is falsified. The doctor who won't prescribe what they know is harmful. The journalist who won't kill the story. The ordinary person who refuses to pretend they didn't see what they saw, who won't turn a blind eye to violence, war crimes, and the extortion of fellow human beings.

This is a call for courage, the specific, unglamorous kind that shows up in small moments: the email you send anyway, the question you ask in the meeting, the post you publish knowing half your audience will push back.

Freedom and dignity are preserved by people. By individuals who decide that their integrity is worth more than their comfort, and that the future they want to live in is worth building, even when building it is hard.

Silence is a choice. And every day it continues, it compounds.

In the song (below) Paul Simon warns the crowd and tries to reach them, but his words fall like silent raindrops into empty wells. That image has stayed with me. Because that's what it feels like to speak when most people are afraid to join, or aren't ready to hear. And yet the speaking still matters. It plants something.

On the 13th of May, 2026, King Charles III stood before the assembled Houses of Parliament and, in his dutiful tone, announced that “My Ministers will also proceed with the introduction of Digital ID that will modernise how citizens interact with public services.” He said this a few months after nearly three million British citizens had signed a petition , the fourth-largest in the history of British democracy, the second-largest outside of Brexit, demanding that the government do precisely the opposite. Three million ordinary Britons who looked at what was being proposed and said, instinctively and emphatically no.

The government heard them and proceeded anyway. This is where things are today. If you think this is merely about a convenient app on your phone that lets you skip the queue at the post office, you have not been paying attention or rather, you have been paying exactly the kind of attention the architects of this system want you to pay: shallow, distracted, reassured by the word “voluntary” and the promise of frictionless public services.

The architects of Digital ID systems present their project in the language of rights and inclusion. You will be empowered to access services and protected from fraud, not to mention that you will be liberated from the onerous burden of carrying physical documents. The credential is yours and the system is voluntary. This language conceals a logical inversion of the first order.

A right, properly understood, is a claim that does not depend on permission. The right to speak, to move, to transact, to exist economically, these are not grants from the State, they are properties of persons that the State is supposed to protect, not administer. The moment your right to participate in the economy is mediated by a government-issued digital credential, it has ceased to be a right and has now become a license, and a license, by definition, can be revoked.

A Solution in Search of a Problem

Let us begin with the most basic question: what problem, precisely, does Digital ID solve?

You already have a passport and you already have a driver’s licence. You already exist in the ledgers of the state. You are not invisible and the government knows exactly who you are. So when they tell you that Digital ID is about identity verification, they are lying to you. This is not about confirming that you are who you say you are. That problem was solved decades ago. This is about something far more sinister, which is the consolidation of every fragment of your identity, your behaviour, your transactions, and your compliance record into a single, state-controlled digital profile that follows you from cradle to grave.

What you already have is irrelevant. That is the point. They are demanding that you surrender your analogue autonomy and accept, in its place, a digital identity that they control, that they can modify, that they can suspend, and that they can revoke.

Your Body as the Key

Every totalitarian architecture in history has been introduced with the language of efficiency. The Soviet propiska system, internal passports that controlled where citizens could live and work, was sold as population management. China’s Social Credit System was pitched as a tool to build a “harmonious society.” The vaccine passport was framed as a temporary public health measure to keep you safe, to keep grandma safe, to get us back to normal.
