Among the current generation of kids, many are growing up with their mother or father confined to bed or confined to bed themselves. According to a study by ANU, long COVID is hitting up to an estimated 20% of Australians three months after they contracted COVID — mostly women, but also men and children. In the current COVID wave, that means a lot of people coming down sick for a long time.

Long COVID is keeping people from their jobs and their lives, and as COVID cases continue, it is unclear whether the rate of new long COVID cases is increasing faster than the old cases recover.

The result of infection is lasting symptoms. The result of lasting symptoms: suffering. As the report of the committee into long COVID says, long COVID causes “lost earnings, impacts on household finances, and, in some cases, an inability to work or to extend care to family members including children”.

The effect can be seen clearly in the US where disability has risen very quickly since 2020 amid low vaccination rates and rampant infectious spread.

The pattern is less visible in Australian data, as the next chart shows. Here, the share of people claiming to be unable to work thanks to disability is affected a lot by changes in the relative rates of the JobSeeker payment and the disability support pension.

But we see a general uptrend in people who are unable to work because of disability, which is not what we would expect in a time of low unemployment. The signal is particularly strong in people aged 35-44 — prime working years.

A recent study published in The Medical Journal of Australia suggested that the cost of the lost labour from a single round of infections in 2022 would be $9.6 billion and that hundreds of thousands of Australians would be affected.

We need to be clear about what long COVID is and how long it lasts. The disease is under-researched and the clinical course is still being discovered as time passes, but it is possible to say the following.

We can divide long COVID into a few groups. There are people with damaged lungs from serious disease and people with lingering coughs; that’s one group. Then there are people whose sense of smell takes a while to come back. That’s another group.

Then there’s the most important group: the group with mysterious lingering symptoms, even if they didn’t have a bad case of COVID in the first place. This is the group that’s been a mystery to science, and the group where we find people who don’t recover.

This group overlaps with the disease known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), aka myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME): a mysterious post-infection condition that debilitates people — mostly women — and produces symptoms in a range of areas; neurological, blood pressure, pain, immune system, etc.

How common is long COVID? Well, there are all sorts of estimates, ranging from 0.09% to one in five, according to the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation. It depends in part on how you define long COVID and when you ask about symptoms. If a cough four weeks after infection onset counts, long COVID is common; if you need to be severely debilitated 12 months later, long COVID is less common.

What seems to be true is that many people get better. Online forums devoted to long COVID are full of recovery stories — some spontaneous, others attributed to various actions the person took. Science is silent on what might lead to recovery, although many trials are underway.

Those same forums are also full of the stories of people who have not gotten better, and many who have gotten worse over time. The odds of spontaneous recovery for a person seem to worsen as their illness progresses. Many people have long COVID for less than six months, some for a year, some for a few years, and an unlucky group keep suffering for a longer time.

Obviously there are no cases of long COVID in the world that have lasted more than five years: five years ago the virus was almost exclusively infecting pangolins, or maybe bats. But the history of ME/CFS suggests that some people can be sick for decades.

Long COVID was most commonly caused by the delta virus. The more recent omicron virus can still cause long COVID, but does so less often. This is consistent with the finding that less severe illness is less likely to cause long COVID. Vaccination also appears to reduce the odds of getting long COVID.

The Burnet Institute is one of the leading Australian organisations studying long COVID. Its recent study argues that long COVID is caused by viruses persisting in the body. This is one of the two basic theories, the other being the “hit-and-run” theory, where the virus is gone but some key system, probably immunological in nature, is disturbed.

The Burnet Institute’s argument of viral persistence has some support. A French team has recently teased some brand new findings — as yet unpublished — saying they know where the virus has been hiding. The research group, from the French National Centre for Scientific Research, have found SARS-nCov-2 hiding in a special type of immune cell called megakaryocytes. These cells produce the little clotting factors in blood called platelets and — the French team says — can seed the virus into the platelets. If that leads to problems with blood flow, it could explain many of the problems in long COVID, including fatigue and brain fog.

There’s certainly precedent for a virus to hang around in immune cells after an acute infection. That’s what the human immune virus (HIV) does, infecting T-cells. It causes an even more dangerous post-infectious immune condition, known as AIDS, which is fatal if the infection is not kept in check by anti-viral drugs.

The big difference between long COVID and AIDS is that long COVID is not infectious after the acute infection. In that sense, the post-infectious period is more akin to the situation with polio where after an acute illness, a small proportion of sufferers go on to experience long-lasting symptoms. In the case of polio, the virus attacks nerves, causing post-polio syndrome.

The idea that infections can cause illness after their acute phase has been unfashionable until recently. While HIV/AIDS is well-understood, it has been considered an unusual case. People were thought to beat infections and move on. That way of thinking is being upturned by some large and powerful studies into the causes of chronic disease.

Several other viruses also seem to be implicated in the emergence of “other” diseases. Human papillomavirus is an obvious trigger for the emergence of cervical cancer. Most famously, the Epstein-Barr virus was revealed as a necessary trigger for the emergence of multiple sclerosis. That revelation came from an extremely strong study of 10 million members of the US armed forces and has been revolutionary.

And of course, two Australians won the Nobel Prize for proving that stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria rather than manifested by stress.

If long COVID is shown to be caused by viral persistence, then the techniques that have fought back against viruses in other conditions could be deployed again in this condition. That would be a vital step to getting a lot of people, both children and their parents, out of a miasma of suffering and back into life.Unquote

There was an odd atmosphere on Capital Hill on the final scheduled sitting day for 2024.

Ministers floated between offices, affecting calm in that way trial lawyers do after closing arguments when everything hangs on a curmudgeonly judge or an inscrutable jury.

The Speaker, Milton Dick, expressed his thanks to the sprawling complex's thousands of staff for keeping operational what Anthony Albanese described as "the most visited building in Australia".

And it certainly seemed "most-visited" at Aussies on Thursday morning - the roiling social hub where over three decades, Dom Calabria and his father Tony have furnished coffee and meals to stressed press gallery journos, MPs, PMs and frontbenchers, and an infinity of lobbyists and public officials.

In their ritual post-question time speeches before the summer break - a bilateral nod to civility dubbed "the hypocrisies" by one scribe - Albanese and Peter Dutton praised old Tony's 28-year stint at Aussies.

"Tony is the man who did so much to enhance the seat of democracy here," Albanese remarked warmly to his fellow "Italo-Australian" looking up to the public gallery where three generations of Calabrias watched on.

Dutton lauded the ailing 84-year-old's migrant story having emigrated at just 14. "He has worked every day since then, he has educated his children, he has provided a role model and has given that love to his family that has created a remarkable legacy," Dutton said.

In other comments, Albanese revealed that he and Dutton did not hate each other after all.

He noted that while he had visited Morrison's office only once as opposition leader (a startling factoid since the global pandemic occasioned a bipartisanship likened to wartime), Dutton had been into Albanese's prime ministerial suite, well, "more often than I'd like". Cue laughter.

Yet coursing impatiently under all this ersatz chumminess, was the existential fight to come.

Each knows that within months, one will be up, the other, finished.

Statistically, Labor is not the "natural party of government".

Since the Second World War, it has occupied the Treasury benches for just 29 years.

Nonetheless, Labor goes into next year's election comforted by electoral history and shielded by an unofficial "Swiss G]guard" of community independents.

But that historical precedent - every first-term federal government since 1932 has secured a second term - may amount to nothing in this disintermediated age of antisocial media and permanent grievance.

For the 93 years since the rookie Scullin Labor government crashed along with everything else in the Great Depression, incumbency has been a winged keel. Australian voters have tended to pick and stick, at least once. Now though, around the democratic world in 2024, the vogue is to "pick then kick".

But what about that Swiss guard of independents? Albanese's worst-case scenario is that one or all of the first-term teals lose. Another risk is that some back a Dutton executive.

Currently Labor has 78 seats to the Coalition's 58. Dutton needs a net gain of 18 seats to govern in his own right. A huge task.

Polls suggest the most likely outcome is a minority parliament. Labor could lose half a dozen seats to Dutton's Liberals and still be close enough to credibly seek crossbench commitments for supply and confidence.

But what would the teal independents do - who would they prefer to form government? The lesson from the minority Gillard period is that indies who hold conservative seats but back progressive governments face extinction themselves.

In this light,, it may be instructive to consult the AEC's "two-party preferred" exercise, in which it allocated all 151 "Reps" seats to either of the two major parties (irrespective of whether the seat actually fell to a third party).

Unsurprisingly, it shows that preferences for either of the two majors (ahead of the other) favoured the Liberals by the following percentages in teal seats: Curtin (5.4), Goldstein (4.8), Kooyong (4.1 ), Mackellar (8.6), Warringah (1.4), Wentworth (5.9).

These pro-Liberal margins may even expand in a 2025 election devoid of the unpopular Morrison.

Yet this cuts both ways. In formerly safe Labor Fowler, Dai Le (assuming she survives) would have to ignore a strong Labor proclivity in her seat to back a Dutton-led minority government.

Another outlier is Alexander Downer's erstwhile stronghold of Mayo, held by the centre-right indie Rebekah Sharkie. Her Adelaide Hills seat actually favoured Labor by 1.6 per cent in 2022.

In all three of the Queensland seats filched by the Greens in 2022, voters preferred Labor - even the two secured from the LNP, Brisbane and Ryan.

Nationally, the polls show a busy and productive Labor trailing Dutton's detail-light rhetorical assault over cost of living and immigration. The hardline Queenslander is a more effective political communicator than even his own colleagues thought when they overlooked him in 2018.

In 2025, Labor remains the narrow favourite. But its hardheads recognise that no opposition leader is unelectable, no historical precedent immutable, and no seat lead impregnable.

With the comforting arrival of dusk, & a fortuitous lull in the rain, i ventured out the front, got my ladder outta the garage, & slithered my way scaredily up said device to assess the scene roofside [still from ladder, not actually on roof; those days are behind me]. Afaict all tiles remain in place, & whilst i was several metres distant from the presumed impact zone [the proximity of the huge inverted branch below now blocks moving the ladder any closer], no whopping great cracks seemed apparent either. The worst i could see, i think, was an apparent bit of local damage to the metal gutterguard thingie, so i might also need to get someone to look into that for me. TL;DR: seems like it coulda been much worse, so i provisionally regard it as a bit of luck.

Lay in bed befuddled wondering wtf happened, then began to doubt it & suspected it had been only a dream. Went back to sleep. OMZ, the huge old pine tree has broken a huge huge branch, high up & close to its trunk, which then seems to have hinged downwards pivotting around the splinter that was still partly attached. Judging by its size, afaict it must have hit the roof but then continued falling down past that. Now said broken branch is almost vertical upside down, resting on ground vertically & leaning against many other ok branches wrt horizontal support. What to do? It's raining. Did it damage the roof, are any tiles broken or dislodged, am i gonna have a leak? Fsck, i'm going to have to call someone to help. Who, how? Fsck.

There was a time when i was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, & assume his #CunningPlan was to lull the tories into a false sense of security before unleashing his masterstroke. Alas, now afaict he's merely given them a true sense of security, which when we contemplate their ghastliness & uselessness, reinforces the catastrophe his term seems to have been. Actually no that's a bit premature. If potato actually somehow wins next election, then yes this term will have been catastrophic. At this point, does Albo even deserve to win?A friend joked to me recently that the best news Labor has had this week was being told that I was thinking that Anthony Albanese could very well lose next year's election outright. The jibe at my forecasting record was fair comment, one I must endure - sometimes boast of - with all the fortitude I can muster.

But more important than profitless speculations about the election date and the likely outcome is whether people with a usual mind to vote Labor should do so next year - as a sort of encouragement award? Or because the alternative seems so dismal?

Does Albanese deserve re-election? Would more of the same be preferable to life under Peter Dutton? Or should Labor's seeming incapacity to break through on the cost of living, its policy timidity, and its effective abandonment of what were once seen as fundamental Labor ideas and ideals suggest that its separation from the community can only grow?

Labor struggles with some of the legacies of pragmatic decisions made even before the election. Going along with AUKUS, for example, was decided by an inner coterie of party heavies in less than 48 hours after the American, British and Australian agreement was announced. It was decided without consultation with the rest of the front bench, parliamentary caucus or the wider party. It was obviously against the party's grain, but the leaders feared, correctly, that Scott Morrison would use his coup to wedge Labor to the Coalition's advantage.

As some of his vehement Labor critics, such as Paul Keating and former foreign ministers Gareth Evans and Bob Carr have said, going along with the proposal might have been reasonable political counter tactics at the time. It would do on the understanding that it would operate until after the election when an incoming Labor government could get a full range of independent advice. Morrison had felt no obligation to brief or consult Labor. He never did on big issues.

But once Labor was elected, it doubled down on AUKUS, without ever explaining its thinking processes. It hasn't yet. It has appeared in the outcome more servile, more anxious to please and be flattered and more careless of Australian sovereignty than ever it had suggested in its pre-election indications. Perhaps that was because the background and instincts of Albanese and Richard Marles were never steeped in the area. Albanese and Marles may be good factional players, but neither is much respected as a policy wonk, let alone an intellectual or strategist. All it seems to have cost the Yanks was a little tummy tickling and some golf games. Not since Alaska has the US won a nation so cheaply.

British and American defence industry can rival Australia in delays, cost overruns and incompetent management. They, unlike Australia, can, in any event, abrogate the deal at will. No one knows how Albanese can insist the arrangements do not compromise Australian sovereignty. It's not clear to Keating, Carr, and Evans and independent commentators. Adding to those doubts is the government's failure to engage in any public consultation, or debate about what is really involved.

All of these considerations, and more, apply to the way that Australia has been a largely uncritical supporter of the US and Israel over the reduction of Gaza and the invasion of Lebanon. Labor mostly sings the Israel song, if with token gestures of concern for Palestinian victims, including 18,000 children. In more recent times, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has made verbal gestures and tepid criticisms suggesting a more even-handed approach, but has satisfied no one. Albanese and Wong were once fiercely in support of Palestinian rights. Albanese, in particular, seems to have swallowed whole the idea that any criticism of Israel or Zionism represents full-blown anti-Semitism. Labor's significant shift towards Israel has not been a "pragmatic" response to political defence or intelligence judgments about Australia's needs and national interests, or international human rights considerations. In line with what seems a general strategy of secrecy, and resistance to public discussion and debate, Labor has failed to confide in the public, to consult, to listen or to explain.

Labor has long had a bad conscience on respecting the human rights of asylum seekers. It became a "pragmatic" supporter of (convert to) Liberal Party policy after it was thought to be successful. It came to think, even (through Kevin Rudd) pioneer, the belief that "boat people" had to be treated by Home Affairs officials with conscious and implacable cruelty and given no hope of achieving asylum in Australia. This was on the practical ground that this, and boat turn-backs, cut the traffic (if not the problems of people escaping war and civil disaster). No one in Labor could think of an alternative policy that would not be monstered by the Coalition happy to demonise refugees. This week Labor took legislative and PR initiative in "toughening" up its powers to deal with unauthorised non-citizens. It is trying again to get around successive High Court judgements which have frustrated the capacity to detain indefinitely without trial, or without manacles.

Again, in terror of being wedged, Labor has sought to implement significant cuts in the immigration intake, particularly by restricting numbers of international students. This has been in response to a Dutton suggestion that housing problems have been aggravated by student demand. In fact, the international education industry earns Australia $30 billion a year, and student accommodation, even in the cities, is not a significant part of the housing problem. Albanese, in short, is shooting the nation in the foot by pandering to whipped-up anti-immigration sentiment without making any contribution to the resolution of the problem. He won't defend the policy because he knows it's an uphill fight. So, he surrenders in advance.

Actually, a resolution of housing shortfalls by 2030 would involve allowing migration by at least 50,000 more building tradespeople beyond those Australia could train from within its own population over that period. The houses will not build themselves, and while there are workforce and supply problems, subsidising rents, giving grants to first-home buyers, announcing new subdivisions and "announceables" will only drive up house prices. Which may well suit some Labor constituencies, already housed, who do not want to see the value of their houses decline.

It is, of course, deplorable and despicable that Dutton and many Coalition figures are helping to create and pander to anti-immigration feeling. It is worse that many will feel encouraged in this by the success of such political strategies in the US and Europe in recent times. But this does not excuse the Albanese government's pre-emptive buckle to such sentiment, its general terror of political criticism from anyone apart from the Greens. Or its failure to enter into the public square to promote and defend sound policies. This is a government, in short, that lacks guts.

It also lacks imagination. And it won't take political risks. It has a habit of leaving others out to dry the moment any brave or pioneering new "initiative" causes a negative reaction. Once within sight of the enemy, or a headline in The Australian, one sees general panic and retreat.

Even on social policy, including gambling law restrictions, Albanese has been a catastrophe and has seemed a pawn of the lobbies that have traditionally "owned" Labor. Like most of the media policies of its communications minister, tough-sounding social media laws are a PR construct, rushed into Parliament but not intended to do anything for at least a year.

It has reached the point where skilled opponents can play Albanese himself, and various other Labor bedwetters off a break. Almost anything the highly professional Labor machine does to try to counter this - especially pandering to mining companies and giving favoured treatment to their sternest critics The Australian and other organs of News Ltd - aggravates the perception problems. Its loyalty to its traditional enemies is never reciprocated.

Equally despicable is the way that Labor makes no-go zones of policy areas where it has suffered humiliating defeat, usually by own goals. There could be no better example than Indigenous affairs, once the highest priority of Albanese, now an area of policy and program paralysis after the decisive defeat of the Voice referendum last year. It is no coincidence the principle to which Albanese was committed - the idea that those made subject to Indigenous policy ought to have a right to be consulted and heard - has been, all along, the most serious deficiency of his style of government. Most significant policy and program failures have been inevitable consequences of his compulsive secrecy, suspicion of players not inside the big lobbies, and his exclusion of the public, and even the party, from consultative processes. (Oddly, however, members of the big lobbies, including many who pretend Albanese is a "good mate", regard him as a pushover - even as groups that have been pro-Labor or of the party itself find themselves treated with hostility, indifference, wariness, scepticism and distrust.)

The Albanese style depends on the fact the party has long ceased to have any form of grass-roots structure or governance. Or any pretence of participation in its counsels by anyone other than full-time party professionals, the greater majority of whom, including Albanese, have never worked outside organisations affiliated with the party, nor got their fingernails dirty. Max Kiefel, writing of the US Democrats in The Baffler this week might have been talking of Albanese Labor when he commented that the party never seemed to show they believed working class people deserve agency, a right to exercise control over the social and economic conditions that shape their lives, or that they had valuable wisdom the party itself could learn from.

Spring & summer brings extreme heat, violent thunderstorms, killer bushfires. It also brings tiny niceties unknown or unthought-of to some peeps, but much prized by others. In this heat, all the jumpers, sloppy-jos, sleeved collared shirts et al are put away, & light sleeveless sundresses or backless tops etc come back into play. That allows the ponytail direct skin access to swish across back & shoulders randomly which, as a very tactile peep, is a delightful sensation.
