as an update, we think it's pyometra. all the vets around here are excessively expensive so we haven't checked for certain. Even if we did check, the treatment for pyometra would be way way way outside any reasonable budget anyway (we got quoted 6,000 the last time one of "our" strays got pyometra)

Unfortunately, it was working Very badly when I tested, I peeled back the connector to find that the wires inside have frayed and broken from the connector... Which is going to make getting a pinout of this thing exceedingly difficult now.

On the other side, Look at this connector! It reminds me of GX12 but I have never seen anything quite like it before, They keying pattern is rather bespoke.
