The "protect the kids" campaign isn't what it looks like. It never is.

Let's start with the thing nobody says out loud.
Australia just made it illegal for a fifteen-year-old to have a Reddit account. To enforce that, every adult in the country must now prove who they are. Uploaded government ID, facial biometric scans, bank account linkage, behavioral inference. Just to access a platform where someone might post a funny picture of their dog. The law targets children. The surveillance infrastructure targets everyone.
The United Kingdom's Online Safety Act is already live, requiring age verification across social media, search engines, video platforms, messaging apps, and dating services. Half the United States, twenty-five states as of September 2025, now mandates age verification for content platforms. France is building a national age-verification app. The European Commission wants a digital minimum age of sixteen across the entire EU. Denmark, Norway, Spain, Slovenia, Malaysia: all moving in the same direction, on roughly the same timeline, citing roughly the same reasons.

This didn't happen because every government on earth simultaneously read Jonathan Haidt's book and decided to do something about it.
Something else is happening. Watch where the infrastructure lands, not who it's nominally aimed at.

The Greatest Trick Governments Ever Pulled

The most effective political maneuver of the modern era is not the lie. Lies get caught. The effective maneuver is the emotionally irresistible reframe: take an action that serves power and dress it in the clothes of something that serves the vulnerable.
You cannot be against children. That's the whole point. The moment a legislative package gets the word "children" in its title, the political calculus shifts entirely. You're no longer arguing policy. You're arguing against mothers who lost their daughters to Instagram-enabled bullying. You're arguing against gut-wrenching suicide statistics. You're arguing against the image of a twelve-year-old at two in the morning, alone, spiraling through an algorithm that has mapped her neurological vulnerabilities with terrifying precision.

In November 2024, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cited a personal letter from Kelly O'Brien, whose twelve-year-old daughter Charlotte took her own life after being bullied at school. The letter was read on the floor of parliament. The bill passed in eight days. Eight days, for legislation mandating biometric verification infrastructure across the entirety of Australia's internet. The Senate didn't even wait for the proposed twelve-week consultation period.

That is not the speed of genuine deliberation. That is the speed of a pre-made decision looking for an emotional cover story.

This playbook has a long pedigree. The Communications Decency Act of 1996 was sold as child protection and struck down by the Supreme Court as a First Amendment violation. The PATRIOT Act was sold as terrorism prevention and deployed against drug offenses, political activists, and journalists. The War on Drugs was sold as protecting communities and functioned as a mass incarceration machine that targeted Black Americans with surgical precision. Every serious expansion of state power in the modern era has arrived wrapped in the language of protection.

The question to ask, every single time, is not what does this law claim to do? The question is what does this law actually build?

Read the Infrastructure, Not the Press Release

Australia's Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 mandates that "age-restricted" social media platforms, currently Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, X, Snapchat, Threads, Twitch, and Kick, take "reasonable steps" to prevent under-sixteens from holding accounts. Sounds targeted. But "reasonable steps" is defined to include facial age estimation via selfies, inference from behavioral data, uploaded government identification documents, and linked bank account details. Companies face fines of up to AU$49.5 million for non-compliance.

Parents cannot give consent to override the ban. Children cannot appeal it. And the list of affected platforms has no ceiling. Australia's eSafety Commissioner has explicitly stated "there will not be a static list" of restricted services. Pinterest was initially excluded. Twitch was subsequently added. The mechanism is designed for expansion.

Look at what happened in the United States when age verification laws took effect in Florida. VPN demand surged by 1,150 percent, per Electronic Frontier Foundation research. The New York Center for Social Media and Politics confirmed that teenagers did not stop accessing restricted content. They migrated to offshore platforms operating outside any regulatory framework, with zero child safety infrastructure. The law's stated purpose, protecting children from harmful content, produced the exact opposite outcome.

Legislators know this. The data from earlier-adopting states was available before later states passed their own versions of the same laws. Researchers published it. Digital rights advocates testified about it. Courts cited it in injunctions. Governments passed the laws anyway.

You don't keep building something that doesn't work for its stated purpose unless it's working for a different purpose.

That purpose is the creation of a verified-identity layer on top of the internet. A system where access to the digital public square requires authentication. Where your online activity is, at minimum, linkable to your real identity, by platforms, by verification vendors, by governments with subpoena power, and by whoever eventually hacks the databases.
A third-party vendor handling Discord's UK identity checks was hacked in late 2025. Approximately 70,000 users' government ID photos were potentially exposed. Australia suffered major data breaches at Qantas in 2025, MediSecure in 2024, and Medibank in 2022. Freedom House estimates 81 percent of the world's internet users live in countries where people have been arrested or imprisoned for social media posts about political issues. This is the world you're building a biometric database into.

Late Stage Fiat

"Late stage capitalism" doesn't cover where we actually are. That framing assumes the system is still fundamentally capitalist, just corrupted by excess. Late stage fiat (from my friend @MasaSonCap) is more precise.
Late stage fiat is what happens when the monetary system built after 1971, when Nixon severed the dollar's last link to gold and the world's reserve currency became a managed promise, reaches the end of its productive runway. The debt-to-GDP ratios stop being theoretical problems and start being operational ones. The gap between official inflation statistics and the lived experience of purchasing power grows too large to paper over with communication strategy. Interest on the debt begins to crowd out the spending that kept the population's consent softly purchased.

The United States government paid $1.1 trillion in interest on the national debt in fiscal year 2024, more than it spent on defense. The Congressional Budget Office projects debt held by the public will reach 116 percent of GDP by 2034 and keep climbing. Canada, the UK, France, and most of the EU are running comparable dynamics with less capacity to absorb them, because none of them control the world's reserve currency. Canada's federal debt hit $1.4 trillion in 2024, while Bank of Canada data shows the median Canadian household's real wage has been essentially flat for fifteen years. The average house in Toronto costs 12.7 times the average annual household income. In 1990, that ratio was under four.

These are not the statistics of a system that needs adjustment. These are the statistics of a system in managed decline, held together by monetary expansion that also explains why your groceries cost 40 percent more than they did in 2019, why your rent is unaffordable, why young people increasingly don't bother trying to own property, start families, or buy into institutions that used to reward participation.

Late stage fiat is the slow redistribution of real wealth upward through the Cantillon Effect, the economic principle named for eighteenth-century economist Richard Cantillon, which holds that newly created money benefits those who receive it first, before prices adjust, at the expense of those further down the chain. The central bank creates money. The banks get it first. Asset-owners benefit. Wage-earners absorb the price increases. The gap widens. The system grows increasingly extractive. The population grows increasingly restless. And the restless population has the internet.

The Cantillon Effect on Information

Richard Cantillon described the uneven flow of new money through an economy. The same dynamic runs through information. When the institutional apparatus, governments, central banks, legacy media, credentialed experts, controlled the channels through which information moved, they collected an informational Cantillon premium. The narrative reached the population pre-shaped. Dissent existed at the margins, was expensive to produce and distribute, and could be largely contained.

The internet broke this. Not gradually, either. Rapidly, and then all at once. The marginal cost of publishing fell to zero. The marginal cost of reaching a global audience fell to near-zero. The gatekeeping apparatus, the editors, the broadcasters, the publishers, the institutional credentialing mechanisms, became optional for anyone willing to do the work. Millions of people were willing.
The results were catastrophic for institutions that had depended on informational advantage. Every major credibility collapse of the past decade, weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the 2008 financial crisis, COVID policy contradictions, central bank inflation forecasting failures, the Canadian government's invocation of the Emergencies Act to freeze the bank accounts of truckers, was amplified, analyzed, and archived by a distributed population that could no longer be managed by simply declining to cover it.
So the institutions tried content moderation. Partnership programs with platforms. "Misinformation" labels. Regulatory pressure: the Biden administration pressured Facebook to censor COVID-related humor and satire, a fact Zuckerberg testified to before the House Judiciary Committee. The EU's Digital Services Act, per documents obtained by the House Judiciary Committee in 2025, was used to pressure TikTok and other platforms to censor "coded statements," "media presented out of context," and "misrepresent[ed] authoritative information," categories that in practice mean material that makes EU institutions look bad. These internal documents showed TikTok systematically censoring true information globally to comply with the European Commission's demands.
None of it worked well enough. As long as anyone could create an anonymous account and post anything, the supply of inconvenient information was essentially unlimited. You could whack one mole and a thousand others would appear.
Better content moderation doesn't solve that. Identity verification does. Make anonymity technically impossible and dissent becomes practically costly. The person who would post an anonymous criticism of central bank policy will think twice when posting requires linking their government ID. No conspiracy required. Just institutional logic. And the "protect the children" frame is how you implement it without triggering the political resistance that would arise if you announced the actual policy.

A Fourth Turning, Just Slower and More Annoying

William Strauss and Neil Howe identified a recurring cycle in Anglo-American history: roughly every eighty years, following a sequence of High, Awakening, Unraveling, and Crisis, a society is forced through a crucible that destroys old institutions and births new ones. The Fourth Turning is the Crisis phase, total war, depression, revolution, the moment when the contradictions of the previous era become unsustainable and something breaks.

The framework maps onto history with uncomfortable precision. The American Revolution, the Civil War, World War II, and by Howe and Strauss's original timing, a fourth crisis due roughly in the 2005-2025 window. They were right about the timing. They may have been wrong about the drama.

Late stage fiat produces not a shattering crisis but a managed slide. Not the Bang but the long Whimper. Gradual institutional decay, declining living standards absorbed slowly enough to prevent the critical mass of desperation required for genuine revolution, the grinding down of expectations until a generation doesn't know what it lost because it never had it.

The Fourth Turning without the reset. The Crisis phase prolonged by the monetary system's ability to paper over its own failures, borrowing against the future, inflating away the debt, keeping the lights on just long enough to prevent the torches from coming out. No single moment is catastrophic enough to serve as the hinge. Everything gets slightly worse, year by year, while the official statistics report manageable growth.
The Unraveling goes permanent. Institutional trust continues to fall: 32 percent of Canadians trust the federal government, per Edelman's 2024 Trust Barometer, down from 53 percent in 2020. Social cohesion frays. Birth rates decline. Substance use, chronic illness, financial precarity, and political nihilism all trend in the same direction. The population gets angrier, but the anger stays diffuse, channeled into culture wars rather than structural demands, managed by a media ecosystem designed to generate heat without light. Don't even need to mention that Canada will have killed more than 100,000 of its people by the end of 2026 through the MAID program.

In a slow-motion crisis of legitimacy rather than a dramatic collapse, the internet is uniquely dangerous to the people running the system. Not because it enables violent revolution, but because it enables accurate accounting. It's the ledger that can't be revised. The memory that can't be managed. Every broken promise gets documented. Every contradicted statistic gets cross-referenced. Every exposed hypocrisy gets amplified. The system can survive being wrong. It cannot survive being wrong and everyone knowing it simultaneously.

The internet must therefore be restructured. Not eliminated; that would be too obvious, too authoritarian, too quickly recognized for what it is. Restructured. Made traceable. Made accountable. Made safe, not for children, but for narratives.

The Anonymity Destruction Pipeline

Watch the sequence.

It starts with children, because children are the population everyone agrees needs protection, and because starting with children lets you build the infrastructure before extending it to adults. This is explicit in how the Australian law is structured: the eSafety Commissioner can expand the list of restricted platforms at any time, and the verification infrastructure built to comply is not age-specific. It verifies everyone.
In the United Kingdom, the Online Safety Act, framed as a child protection measure, applies to social media platforms, search engines, video-sharing sites, cloud storage, dating apps, and messaging boards. It requires removal of content deemed "harmful to children" and "legal but harmful" material. Those categories are defined by Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, a government-appointed body. The law does not restrict itself to under-sixteens. It governs what adults can access.
In the United States, Michigan and Wisconsin have proposed legislation to ban VPNs, the tools people use to circumvent age verification. Meaning these states want to criminalize privacy tools because they allow users to route around surveillance. Stanford University researcher Riana Pfefferkorn put it plainly in Wired: "Age verification impedes people's ability to anonymously access information online. That includes information that adults have every right to access but might not want anyone else knowing they're consuming."

In Vietnam, a December 2024 law requires social media users to authenticate their accounts with government-issued ID documents or mobile phone numbers subject to real-name registration. An authoritarian government's law, structurally identical to what Australia, the UK, and the European Commission are building. The difference is that Vietnam didn't bother with the "think of the children" framing.
Freedom House recorded internet freedom declining globally for the fifteenth consecutive year in 2025. Twenty-eight of the seventy-two countries it assessed got worse. The tool used most consistently by governments to suppress online dissent was identity verification, connecting online activity to real identities, making the cost of posting the wrong thing a cost paid in the real world.

The infrastructure being built in liberal democracies today, in the name of child safety, is the same infrastructure authoritarian governments use for political control. The architecture is identical. Only the stated purpose differs.

The Mental Health Argument: Taking It Seriously, Then Defeating It

Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation makes a real case. The correlation between smartphone adoption and youth mental health deterioration is documented and concerning. Between 2010 and 2020, rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among adolescents, particularly girls, rose sharply across the United States, UK, Canada, and Australia, roughly tracking the mass adoption of social media. The harms are real and deserve serious policy responses.
The policy response enacted is identity verification of the entire internet.
Haidt recommends smartphones out of schools, age limits on app store downloads enforced at the device level, and phone-free childhood norms enforced socially and institutionally. Targeted interventions that address children's relationship with devices without requiring biometric databases of every adult internet user. The Australian and British governments passed laws that do none of those things.

A Pew Research survey from April 2025 found 74 percent of teenagers said social media made them feel more connected to their friends, and 63 percent said it gave them a place to express their creativity. The statistic universally cited to justify bans, that social media harms teens' mental health, refers to approximately 14 percent of teens reporting harm, a figure the survey's own headline misrepresented as "roughly 1 in 5" when the actual number is closer to 1 in 7.

An Australian poll in November 2024 found 77 percent supported the social media age limit. That same poll found only 25 percent believed it would work. By December 2025, confidence in the law's effectiveness had fallen to 33 percent, while VPN usage among teenagers had spiked. The kids got around it. Of course they did. Teenagers have been getting around restrictions since restrictions were invented. The law produced not a protected generation but an identity verification mandate affecting every Australian adult on the listed platforms.

The people hardest hit by anonymity destruction are the ones anonymity was actually protecting. For youth, for young people in rural communities, for teenagers whose home environments are unsafe, the anonymous internet has been a lifeline, the one space where they could find information, community, and support unavailable in their immediate physical world. Age verification laws, by requiring minors to authenticate through parents or government systems, eliminate precisely this population's access to precisely this resource. Many U.S. states mandate abstinence-only sex education. The internet is many teenagers' only access to accurate reproductive health information. That access disappears when the internet requires a government ID.
The people most helped by anonymity destruction are the people who found anonymity inconvenient.

The Sovereign Individual Thesis Plays Out

In 1997, James Dale Davidson and Lord William Rees-Mogg published The Sovereign Individual, predicting with unusual specificity what would happen as digital technology matured. The nation-state would lose its monopoly on violence, taxation, and information control. Cryptography would allow individuals to store and transfer value without government intermediation. The internet would destroy information monopolies. The most productive individuals would become effectively stateless, owing loyalty to no single government and paying taxes to none.
Davidson and Rees-Mogg were called utopians and dismissed by serious people. They were also substantially correct about the mechanism.
Bitcoin is the most concrete expression of the Sovereign Individual thesis in existence. It's money that can't be inflated by central bank decree, a ledger that can't be revised by institutional fiat, value stored outside the banking system that froze Canadians' accounts in February 2022 for the crime of donating to a trucking protest. The Cantillon Effect systematically transfers wealth from wage earners to asset owners through monetary expansion. Bitcoin is the first functional opt-out from that mechanism accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

Late stage fiat cannot coexist indefinitely with an anonymous internet. Bitcoin is surveillance-resistant because it's pseudonymous. As long as someone can create an unverified wallet and transact without identity linkage, Bitcoin maintains its core property as bearer money, money that's yours because you hold it, not because an institution permits you to access it. The moment internet access requires identity verification, every Bitcoin address becomes, in principle, linkable to a real identity. The pseudonymity that gives Bitcoin its sovereignty-preserving properties dissolves. Ignore the Chamaths and the Dalios.

The online anonymity war and the war on hard money are the same war, fought on different fronts by the same institutional logic: the nation-state apparatus defending its relevance, its revenue base, and its monopoly on the narrative of what is happening to ordinary people's material lives.
Anti-money-laundering regulations targeting cryptocurrency tightened globally in the same period that age verification laws were being passed, not coincidentally, but as parallel expressions of the same project. The European Union required crypto exchanges to collect identity data on all transactions in 2024. FinCEN proposed rules that would require verification of self-custodied wallet owners. These are sold as anti-crime measures, the "think of the criminals" frame that is the financial equivalent of "think of the children." The infrastructure built is an identity layer on top of value transfer, mirroring the identity layer being built on top of information access.

Destroying financial pseudonymity and destroying online anonymity are the twin pillars of the late-stage fiat response to its own legitimacy crisis.
Where the Decay Goes

The Fourth Turning framework offers a terminus: the crisis resolves, old institutions collapse, new ones get built, and the cycle begins again. Something breaks loudly enough that everyone agrees something broke.

Late stage fiat offers a different terminus, the version where everything stays nominally intact. The elections still happen. The newspapers still publish. GDP still grows at 1.8 percent annually. The substance beneath the surface hollows out. The currency continues to exist but purchasing power doesn't. The constitution continues to exist but rights don't. The social contract continues to be invoked but not honored.

The surveillance infrastructure gets built gradually, each piece presented as a reasonable response to a genuine problem. Child protection today. Counter-terrorism tomorrow. Financial stability the day after. The categories of "harmful content" that platforms must suppress under laws like the UK's Online Safety Act expand with each review cycle, incorporating new definitions of harm that conveniently track whatever the current government finds inconvenient. The eSafety Commissioner's power to add platforms to Australia's banned list "at any time" is a legislative mechanism designed for scope creep. It is working as designed.
The endpoint of this trajectory is not North Korea. It's closer to the EU model of managed speech: a nominally free internet where the boundaries of acceptable discourse are set by regulatory bodies insulated from democratic accountability, where deviating from approved narratives is not illegal but simply more costly, riskier, technically harder, and economically disadvantaged. You can still say what you think, technically. But everyone knows who said it, and that knowledge produces its own chilling effect.
A society where everyone knows speech is monitored is a society where people self-censor. That is the goal. Not silence; silence would be too obvious, too easily recognized as tyranny. Self-censorship. The ambient awareness that your words are linked to your identity, that your identity is in a database somewhere, that databases get hacked and subpoenas get issued and careers get ended over things said on the internet years ago.

The person most likely to keep their mouth shut is the person with something real to lose: the professional, the parent, the property owner, the person embedded in institutions. The person most likely to keep speaking is the person with nothing to lose. Late-stage fiat's surveillance infrastructure ultimately produces a public discourse dominated by the dispossessed and the ideologically committed, while the broad middle retreats into private silence.
This outcome is documented in authoritarian contexts worldwide. It's being built in democracies, in the name of children, while most of the population approves in polls because the polls ask the wrong question.

The polls ask: Do you support protecting children from social media harm? Seventy-seven percent say yes in Australia. Of course they do. The right question is: Do you support a biometric identity verification layer on the internet, maintained by private vendors with demonstrated breach histories, that links your real identity to your online activity, accessible to governments with subpoena power, in perpetuity? That poll has not been commissioned.

The Counter the Powerful Don't Want You to Make

A version of the "protect children online" argument exists that is serious and doesn't require destroying anonymity. Parental controls at the device level, not the network level. Age verification enforced at the app store, where the check is between a parent and Apple or Google, not between every adult and every platform they access. Social media companies treated as product liability defendants when their design choices demonstrably harm minors, creating financial incentives to actually fix the problem rather than perform compliance theater.

Technologists, civil libertarians, and child safety advocates with real expertise have proposed all of this. It's politically less popular because it doesn't produce the infrastructure that is the actual goal.

Haidt himself has said device-level and school-level interventions are the priority. The Australian government's own commissioned data showed 96 percent of children aged ten to fifteen were on social media before the ban, a penetration rate making clear that the platforms were not the primary access point, and that blocking platforms wouldn't address the underlying dynamic. The kids have the devices. The devices are the problem. The legislation targets the platforms.

Not an oversight. A choice.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Erica Portnoy, a senior staff technologist, said it plainly: "You'll find that the greatest proponents of age verification are those whose greatest concern is control." She called the social media panic "today's satanic panic," a moral hysteria serving institutional interests while producing no actual benefit to the population it claims to protect.

The mechanics track. The satanic panic of the 1980s produced no witches but many ruined lives, teachers, daycare workers, and innocent people destroyed by prosecutions built on moral hysteria. The child social media panic will produce no safer children but a great deal of surveillance infrastructure. The children it claims to protect will use VPNs. The adults who never questioned the premise will wonder why nothing changed for kids while finding, gradually, that something changed for them.

What to Watch

The tell is always in the expansion.
When the categories of "age-restricted" platforms expand beyond social media to messaging services, then to search engines, then to news sites, note the moment. When the minimum age threshold for protected status gets raised from thirteen to sixteen to eighteen, note the trajectory. When proposals emerge to verify identity at the ISP level rather than the platform level, note what that means architecturally. When VPN bans get proposed, already happening in Michigan and Wisconsin, note what function VPNs serve, and for whom banning them is convenient.
Watch what happens in the UK when the Online Safety Act's "legal but harmful" provisions get operationalized. Watch which content gets categorized as harmful. Watch which political speech ends up adjacent to the categories that platforms must suppress. The act's initial enforcement will be careful and defensible. The second and third rounds will be less so. This is how these things always go.

The EU's proposed digital minimum age of sixteen is worth watching closely. If it passes, the identity infrastructure required to enforce it across twenty-seven member states, with free movement of people and data between them, will be the most comprehensive real-name internet system ever built outside of China. It will be sold as a child protection measure. The architecture will be capable of considerably more than that.

The cryptocurrency parallel runs on the same timeline. The jurisdictions moving fastest on social media age verification are moving fastest on crypto identity requirements. The United Kingdom, Australia, and the European Union are leading on both fronts simultaneously. That is not a coincidence worth dismissing.

When the debt becomes truly, operationally unmanageable, when the slow-motion fiscal crisis in the United States, Canada, the UK, and EU member states produces not just austerity but the kind of raw policy failure that no communications strategy can contain, that is the moment when the surveillance infrastructure stops being a background hedge and becomes the primary tool of social management.
As nation-states grow less able to deliver the value that justified their existence, capable individuals will route around them through technology, jurisdictional arbitrage, hard money, and encrypted communication. The nation-states know this. The surveillance architecture is the response, not to children on Instagram, but to the adults who are starting to understand what late stage fiat means for their material lives, who have the internet, and each other, and the ability to make that understanding go somewhere uncomfortable.

Late Stage Fiat's Most Honest Sentence

The mechanism here is more sophisticated than a "governments are evil" frame warrants. People pushing these laws include genuine believers in child protection. The mental health data is real. The harms of poorly designed social media on adolescent development are not fabricated.
But good intentions, assembled into bad policy by institutional logic that runs below the level of conscious strategy, still produce the outcome the institutional logic requires. No conspiracy needed. Just a bureaucracy with incentives, a political class with a legitimacy problem, a monetary system running out of runway, and a technology that threatens the informational advantages that kept the whole edifice plausible.

The children are not the point.
The children were never the point.

The children are the reason you don't push back. They're the reason the polling is seventy-seven percent in favor in Australia even as fifty-eight percent don't believe it will work. People can hold both beliefs simultaneously: this probably won't help kids, but I feel like a monster opposing it. That cognitive dissonance is the policy's most important feature. It's designed into the legislation's framing the same way the Cantillon Effect is designed into monetary expansion: not announced, but functioning.

What's being built is an internet without anonymity. An internet where access requires identity. An internet where speech is free in the technical sense, you can say what you want, unless an algorithm flags it, unless a regulator decides it's harmful, unless a court issues a takedown, unless your employer sees it, unless a future government decides that what you said in 2026 constitutes something it prefers to call a crime.

That internet can't host the kind of accountability journalism, dissident speech, financial privacy, and political organizing that has made the past twenty years of the web, for all its chaos, genuinely threatening to concentrated power.

That's not a bug. That's the product.
The question for anyone who has read this far, anyone who uses pseudonymous accounts, anyone who holds Bitcoin, anyone who has said something true and impolitic without wanting their employer to see it, is not whether to believe this analysis. It's what to do with it.

The Sovereign Individual's answer is to build the infrastructure for a world that doesn't require their permission. Pseudonymous identities on platforms that don't demand government IDs. Self-custodied money on networks that don't depend on banking system goodwill. Encrypted communication that no subpoena can reach. Decentralized publishing that no regulator can single-pointedly disable.

None of this is illegal yet. Note the word "yet."

The window between "technically legal" and "regulated out of existence" is open. The "protect the children" legislation is designed, among other things, to close it. Not overnight. Gradually. In the way that late stage fiat does everything, without a hinge moment, without a dramatic break, without the kind of obvious crisis that would mobilize the resistance that might actually change the outcome.

Just a slow, semi-controlled decay. A managed slide into a world where the internet works like a shopping mall, surveilled, curated, monetized, and administered, rather than a public square.

They're using your children to build it.

And the evidence that it's a terrible idea isn't just compelling. It's totally overwhelming. \ \ The databases they store your identity in get breached constantly. Last week alone a billion records were found sitting on the open internet with no password. I wrote a thread here on twitter about this. \ \ People are being kidnapped because their financial identity was linked to their holdings.\ Innocent people are being jailed because facial recognition got it wrong. \ \ Governments are freezing bank accounts of peaceful protesters. And an entire industry is making billions convincing lawmakers that more data collection will somehow make us safer, when every piece of evidence says the opposite.

Despite all of this, they're not slowing down. They're accelerating.

And I can't understand why. \ \ Anyone with common sense can look at this evidence and say hey maybe that’s not such a good idea… So let’s dig in.

What's Actually Happening Right Now

So here's what this looks like in practice. Right now.

So starting in January 2027, if you live in California and your kid wants to download Minecraft, they'll need to verify their age through the phone's operating system. Not the app. Not the website. The device itself will demand proof of who they are before they can use it. \ \ So let's be clear California's Digital Age Assurance Act requires age verification at the OS level. \ \ That means a 10 year old handing over biometric data or a government ID scan just to use a phone they got for Christmas.

And it ain't just California.\ \ As of 2026, 25 US states have passed age verification laws.\ \ That is half the country.

Nine took effect in 2025 alone. Millions of people are already being forced to upload their passport or scan their face to access parts of the internet that were free and open last year. Think about what that means.

KOSA, the Kids Online Safety Act, was passed in December. The House tried to bundle it with 18 other age verification bills into one massive package. They're not debating whether to do this and they're debating how fast.

In Europe it's even further along. The EU digital identity wallet becomes mandatory by December 2026. Every member state must offer a wallet linking your national ID, driving license, diplomas, and bank accounts.\ \ All in one place. \ All digital. \ All trackable. \ \ If you live in the EU, this is happening to you this year whether you want it or not.

More than half of US states are building digital driver's licenses. Apple Wallet and Google Wallet already support them. The Department of Homeland Security is backing it.

None of this was voted on by the public. None of this was debated in any meaningful way. This is infrastructure being deployed right now and most people have no idea.

Why Are They Doing This?

So this is the insane part. The why they are doing this.

So there are basically four groups pushing this. And when you understand who they are, the whole thing makes a lot more sense.

Group 1: Politicians who want to "do something" about kids online

Now let's be clear this is the bipartisan cover story. Senators Blumenthal and Blackburn introduced KOSA. Republicans and Democrats both support it.\ \ and really the argument is simple: kids are being harmed by social media, we need to verify ages, this is common sense regulation.

And I want to be real clear about something. I'm not arguing against protecting kids. Kids face real dangers online. That's not the debate.

What I'm arguing is that these laws endanger far more kids than they protect. And the evidence is right there.

When Florida passed its age verification law, VPN demand surged 1,150%. Kids didn't stop. They moved to less regulated, more dangerous sites where there are zero protections. NYU and Phoenix Center research confirmed this. You pushed kids out of the relatively supervised spaces and into the actual dark corners of the internet. Good job.

The UK's Online Safety Act was even worse. Websites shut down or blocked UK users entirely. Communities were censored. Reddit subreddits got age-gated randomly, which meant that a lot of users migrated to sketchier platforms.\ \ The law was supposed to protect young people and instead it drove them underground. This is always the case.

And Discord? Discord collected 70,000 government IDs specifically for age verification. Exactly what these laws demand. Then a vendor got hacked and all those IDs leaked. So now you've got 70,000 young people whose government ID photos are on the dark web because a company tried to "protect" them by collecting their identity documents. What did Discord do? They decided to delay it's global age verification, not cancel.

This is not protecting kids. This is building a target list of children's identities and handing it to hackers. If you argue against these laws, you're not arguing against kids. You're arguing against a system that puts kids in more danger than it saves them from.

Group 2: A $51 billion identity verification industry

This is where you follow the money.

The digital identity market is worth $51 billion in 2025. Projected to hit $80 billion by 2030. Some estimates put it over $200 billion by 2035.

Companies like Thales, IDEMIA, NEC, Persona, Yoti, Veriff, Jumio, Onfido, and dozens more. And these aren't exactly companies with clearn records.

Thales for example powers 1 in 3 government IDs issued globally. Well... they are also under investigation by the UK serious Fraud Office and French autorities for briberty and corruption. The company the govts trust to build their identity system. hmmmmm.... \ \ Another major player, has been accused alongside Thales of facilitating human rights abuses of refugees and migrants through border surveillance technology. They helped supply surveillance systems to authoritarian regimes including Egypt under el-Sisi.

Persona, the KYC provider used by Coinbase, Kraken, OpenAI, and Discord, was caught with 53 megabytes of unprotected source code showing they pipe passport data directly to FinCEN tagged with intelligence program codenames. Government surveillance through the same codebase that handles your selfie.

The US just awarded a $37.4 million contract for facial biometrics on Login.gov. Yoti's CEO blogged about 2025 being a "record year" for revenue thanks to age verification laws.

These are the companies building the infrastructure for mandatory digital ID. Companies under investigation for corruption. Companies accused of enabling authoritarian surveillance. Companies that can't protect their own source code.\ \ These companies lobby for the laws that make their products mandatory. The laws create demand. Demand creates contracts. Contracts fund more lobbying. It's a cycle.

Just look at one of them. I've already written about this week, Persona, one of the biggest identity verification providers, was caught with code that pipes your passport data directly to FinCEN tagged with intelligence program codenames. \ \ The same company handling your ID for Coinbase, Kraken, OpenAI, and Discord was running government surveillance through the same codebase. 53 megabytes of source code left unprotected on a government endpoint.

This is the industry we're supposed to trust with mandatory digital ID for everyone. It seems like its already here... \ \ Group 3: Tech companies that want your identity for ad targeting

In January 2024, at a Senate child safety hearing, X CEO Linda Yaccarino testified in support of KOSA. Microsoft's Brad Smith endorsed it the day before. Snap had already thrown its support behind the bill.

By May 2025, Meta, Spotify, Match Group, and Garmin had founded an entirely new lobbying organization dedicated to pushing app-store-level age verification. They hired a veteran government relations professional to lead it.

Ask yourself why the biggest data-harvesting companies on earth are enthusiastically supporting a law that requires verified real identity. \ \ The EFF spelled it out: "Companies want users to spend as much time on their platforms as possible, because they make money from targeted ad sales, and these ad sales are fueled by invasive data collection."

Once you're tied to a verified real identity, you become an infinitely more valuable advertising target. Personalized pricing. Perfect ad targeting. Complete user profiles. The ability to sell verified identity data to third parties. That's not speculation. That's the business model.

These companies aren't supporting KOSA because they care about kids. They've been profiting off kids' data for years. They're supporting it because mandatory identity verification turns every user into a perfectly profiled advertising asset.

there's regular people who genuinely think

"what's the big deal? I show my ID at a bar. Why not online?"

The EFF wrote an entire page addressing this argument directly. Here's why online ID checks are nothing like showing your ID in person:

When you show your ID to a bartender, they look at it and hand it back. They don't photocopy it. They don't store it in a database. They can't track everywhere else you've shown it. They can't be hacked. The data doesn't persist forever.

Online verification stores your data and creates permanent records, which connects to third-party companies. \ \ They get breached.\ Your data gets sold. \ Gets hacked.\ Gets subpoenaed.\ \ And unlike a password, you can't change your face or your date of birth when the database leaks.

This Is How You Get a Social Credit System

And I know people roll their eyes when you say social credit. They think you're being dramatic. They think that's just a China thing.

But let's be clear we already have one, we just don't call it that.

Your credit score decides if you get a mortgage an apartment a car loan sometimes you can even decide if you get a job. Then there's your Uber rating that decides if drivers pick you up your Airbnb reviews well those decide if anyone rents to you, your insurance premium shift based on data you never agreed And some might say this is a great thing. Of course I would like to know who's getting in my car before I give them a ride or who's staying in my home if I rent it out on airbnb.

Nobody is arguing that trust doesn't matter in fact. But here's where that starts to be a problem. These systems were built for specific and limited context. Your Uber rating is supposed to tell a driver. If you know your normal not gonna puke in his backseat your credit score yeah that's supposed to tell a bank if you pay your bills, that's it that's the scope.

And that's what's legitimately terrifying is that what happens when you add a universal digital identity that ties everything together? Well yeah, you have one ID one profile one system and that system knows everything about you your financial history, your travel patterns, your health records, your online behavior and it's all connected to your face.

So that means suddenly that Uber rating or that insurance premium or that credit score will they're not separated anymore their layers of the same identity and that's one switch they can turn it all off they showed you this playbook, and you laughed at it. Remember that Black Mirror episode? Well its here.....

This isn't some conspiracy theory. It's the literal architecture. It's being built in 25 states across the EU and across the world right now on your phone. \ \ Well, let's talk about it because they didn't wake up one morning and announce "Hi, we have a social credit system now." It started as something that many would consider reasonable. Credit enforcement, business regulation, consumer protection, well doesn't that all sound familiar?

Edward Snowden warned about this in June 2025: "Data will influence every aspect of our lives. Can you get a mortgage when you qualify? Will a dating app match you with anyone other than serial killers? That's how you should think of the system."

He's not wrong.

So what happens?

Innocent People Are Already Getting Destroyed

This isn't theoretical. People are already being harmed by the systems that digital ID is built on.

Robert Williams spent 30 hours in a Detroit jail because facial recognition said he was a shoplifter. He wasn't. The match was wrong. He was handcuffed in front of his daughters in his own driveway.

In August 2025 a man in New York was arrested and jailed for two days for a sex crime he didn't commit. The NYPD's facial recognition tool matched him. He didn't even match the physical description the victim gave. Didn't matter. The system said he was the nope that's the guy!

A medical entrepreneur named Vernau spent three days behind bars in July 2024 after facial recognition accused him of cashing a fraudulent check at a bank in Miami. He'd never been to that bank.

The Washington Post investigated and found that police routinely ignore their own safeguards after getting facial recognition matches. At least 10 people have been documented as wrongly arrested based on facial recognition in the US alone. Those are just the ones who fought back and got covered by the press. How many others just took a plea deal?

Now imagine this technology plugged into a mandatory digital ID system. Where your face is the key to everything. Where a false match doesn't just get you pulled over, it locks you out of your bank account, your government services, your ability to function.

That's what they're building. And the technology isn't ready. Gartner said 30% of organizations will consider facial biometric verification unreliable by 2026 because of deepfakes. We're there. The technology that's supposed to secure this system is already failing.

The Politicians Writing These Laws Are Exposing Themselves Too

These people don't seem to care. No one does until it affects them.

In March 2023, DC Health Link was hacked. The personal data of hundreds of members of Congress, their spouses, their dependents, and their staff was stolen and put up for sale on a dark web forum. Social security numbers. Home addresses. Everything. Reuters, the New York Times, and The Guardian all covered it. House Speaker McCarthy called it an "egregious security breach."

In September 2024, 3,200 Capitol Hill staffers had their passwords and IP addresses leaked on the dark web because they'd used their work emails to sign up for various services.

In October 2025, WIRED reported that a database containing information on people who applied for jobs with House Democrats was left accessible on the open web. People with Top Secret security clearances exposed.

And five days ago, at Abu Dhabi Finance Week, 700+ passport scans and government ID cards of world leaders, politicians, and major business figures were found on an unprotected cloud server. Reuters covered it.

The people writing the laws that will put everyone's identity in centralized digital databases can't even protect their own data.

So my question is this. Who convinced these people that building a system to collect and centralize everyone's identity was a good idea? Who sat in front of a senator and said "trust us, we'll keep it safe" when every single piece of evidence says otherwise? \ \ Furthermore, who in the right mind thinks that in the age of AI LLMs its a good idea to digitize everyone's identity and personal information?!?\ \ it's infuriating.

Was it the $51 billion identity verification industry? The one where Yoti's CEO literally blogged about 2025 being a "record year" for revenue? The one where Thales powers 1 in 3 government IDs globally? The one where Persona was caught running government surveillance through the same codebase that handles your passport?

These companies lobby for the laws that make their products mandatory. The laws create demand. Demand creates contracts worth tens of millions. The contracts fund more lobbying.

That's who put the fear in these people. That's who told them digital ID would save them. An industry that stands to make $200 billion by 2035 if every person on earth is forced to carry a digital identity.

What the ACLU Is Saying (and Why It Matters)

In January 2026 they published "How to Give the Government New Power to Un-Person Someone, in Three Easy Steps."

Step 1: Build a digital ID with centralized revocation capability.

Step 2: Make it required for everything so people can't function without it.

Step 3: Let government officials yank people's IDs out of their wallets.

They used the word "unperson" from 1984. And they weren't being hyperbolic. They were describing a technical capability that most digital ID implementations include by default.

Here's what they said: once this infrastructure exists, the government gains the power to "cut off in a single stroke their ability to access their accounts, visit much of the Internet, access government services, start a new job, obtain healthcare."

With a physical ID the government can cancel your driving privileges but they can't reach into your wallet and take the card. With digital IDs? They can. Remotely. Instantly. And most states have included zero protections against this.

"That Would Never Happen Here"

but It already happened....

In April 2025 the Trump administration moved 6,000 legal immigrants into Social Security's "death master file." One entry per person. That's all it took to revoke their ability to work, receive benefits, use banks, or function in society. The AP reported it and Congress condemned it.

This happened with the crude identity infrastructure we already have. Now imagine what becomes possible when that infrastructure is digital, centralized, connected to everything you do, and comes with a remote kill switch.

The ACLU also warned about something called the "phone home" feature. Over 80 organizations signed a letter about it. Every time you use your digital ID, it contacts the issuing government. They can see when and where you show your ID. Every store. Every website. Every bar. Real time surveillance built into the ID itself.

Your physical ID doesn't call the DMV when you show it to a bartender. Your digital one will.

So Who Built This Standard? Prepare yourself....

The digital ID standard most states are adopting was created by a secret committee at the International Standards Organization.

Members: Google. Apple. US Department of Homeland Security. And foreign governments which the ACLU says may include China and Russia. The ISO refuses to say who was on the committee.

No privacy advocates participated.\ No civil liberties groups.\ No human rights organizations. \ Nobody representing the people who would carry these IDs.

Kinda sounds like all things aren't what they seem and the man behind the curtain... Well.. he's probably mean.

The standard prioritizes verifiers over holders. It was built for the people checking your ID. Not for you.

And the text of the new standard? Copyrighted. not public and costs thousands of dollars to even read it.

So you'll be required to carry an ID built in secret by corporations and governments, including potentially authoritarian ones, with zero public interest input. \ \ And you can't even read the rules governing how it works.\ \ What the actual fuck.....

Connect This to the Breaches

Here's where my last two weeks of news and research becomes really important.

They want mandatory digital ID for everyone to access everything. We just documented:

IDMerit: 1 billion KYC records exposed across 26 countries. No password.

Coinbase: 69,000 users' government IDs stolen by bribed employees.

Discord: 70,000 government IDs collected for age verification. Vendor hacked. All leaked.

Transak: 92,000 IDs from one phished employee.

PayPal: Social Security numbers exposed for 6 months from a code error.

MobiKwik: 99 million users, 8.2 terabytes of KYC data sold on the dark web.

Discord is the proof of concept. They collected government IDs specifically for age verification, the exact use case these laws mandate. \ The IDs got leaked.

Now multiply that by every website, every app, every government service. That's what mandatory digital ID means. The attack surface becomes everything.

AI Makes This a Ticking Time Bomb

We're building global identity infrastructure that relies on biometrics at the exact moment AI is learning to fake biometrics perfectly.

Gartner said that by 2026, 30% of organizations will consider facial verification unreliable because of deepfakes. We're there. That's this year.

Vietnamese authorities busted a ring that used AI faces to bypass bank facial recognition and launder $38 million. 1 in 20 verification failures is now linked to deepfakes. "Deepfake as a service" is a real industry you can buy into. 404 Media passed KYC with an AI generated fake driver's license. Took 30 minutes and cost $15.

So the system catches honest people. Stores their real biometrics. Creates permanent records. Meanwhile criminals walk through with synthetic identities.

Think About Future Kids

This is where it stops being a policy argument for me.\ I was part of the first generation who really grew up on the internet, it was everything to be noticed and popular online.

Now that I am older, I think about what it means to grow up in this system. Your face in a government database from the day you get a phone. Every website logged against your real identity. One man's keystroke away from being locked out of society. debanked and unpersoned,

And the worst part? Our kids will be told this is normal. That showing your face to read an article or to play minecraft is just how the internet works. That handing over biometrics to download an app is what everyone does.

They won't know there was ever another way.

That's not safety. It's a cage built by people who have proven, over and over and over again, that they cannot protect a database.

What You Can Do

. Share them. \ \ Support the legal fight. The EFF is challenging these laws in court and winning. They amplification. \ \ Push back on your reps. These laws pass because nobody shows up. Be the one who does. \ \ Use tools that don't collect your identity. Vexl. Mullvad. Proton. Signal. Tor. Cash. The less data you hand over, the less can be leaked or weaponized. \ \ Stop normalizing it. Every time you hand over your passport to access something, you're telling them it's acceptable. Demand alternatives. \ \ Talk about it. Most people have no idea. You do now. That makes it your job.

Here's What It Comes Down To

The evidence is right there.

A system that catches less than 0.1% of criminal money. That costs 100x more than it recovers. That creates databases breached every month. That enables the largest laundering operations through compliant banks. That gets people kidnapped. That locks 1.7 billion people out of the financial system.

And the response? Make it mandatory. For everyone. For everything.

The same companies that left a billion records exposed with no password want to store your face. The same governments that froze bank accounts of peaceful protesters want a remote kill switch on your identity. The same industry that was caught piping passport data to intelligence agencies through the same codebase wants you to trust them with your children's biometrics.

They're wrapping it in "protect the kids" because that's the one argument nobody's allowed to question. But the ACLU is questioning it. The EFF is questioning it. Courts are blocking these laws. Researchers are proving they don't work.

And now I'm questioning it. As loudly as I can.

If we don't push back now, we'll wake up to an internet that demands our face, our fingerprint, and our government ID just to read the news. And by then it'll be too late.

The device in your pocket is not yours. You paid for it, certainly. You carry it everywhere, sleep beside it, and entrust it with your most private communications. But in every meaningful sense, it belongs to someone else. It reports your location to Google every 4.5 minutes. It transmits approximately one megabyte of telemetry every twelve hours while sitting idle on your nightstand. It does this even when you navigate endless settings menus and explicitly opt out. The opt-out is theater. The surveillance is the product.

This is not a bug in the system. It is the system.

When Google offered Android to manufacturers as "free" software, the price was always your data. Governments integrated themselves into this corporate surveillance infrastructure years ago, and the apparatus has only grown more sophisticated. Data brokers now trade location information from over a billion devices. Companies like X-Mode ingest ten billion location data points daily. One data broker was caught tracking women visiting pregnancy centers to build targeted advertising segments. Your movements through physical space have become a commodity traded on markets you never consented to participate in.

The implications extend far beyond advertising. Leaked documentation from Cellebrite, the Israeli forensics company serving 7,000 law enforcement customers worldwide, reveals that every major Android manufacturer's devices can be exploited in both locked and unlocked states. Every Samsung, every OnePlus, every Motorola. The one exception, explicitly marked as inaccessible in their internal documentation, is GrapheneOS running on Pixel hardware with patches from late 2022 onward. A whistleblower who joined a private Cellebrite training session in October 2024 reported that every locked Pixel 9 running GrapheneOS was listed as beyond their capabilities.

This matters because the question of device security is ultimately a question of property rights. When your phone transmits your location, your contacts, your browsing habits, and your app usage to corporate servers without meaningful consent, you do not own that device in any substantive sense. You are renting surveillance equipment. GrapheneOS exists to change this equation, to transform a piece of consumer electronics into something that actually belongs to you.

The Verification Problem

The cryptographer Auguste Kerckhoffs articulated a principle in 1883 that remains foundational: a secure system must remain secure even when everything about it except the key is public knowledge. Security through obscurity is not security at all. History validates this relentlessly. The DVD industry's Content Scramble System, developed in secret, was cracked within three years and proved millions of times weaker than advertised. WEP wireless encryption collapsed so completely it was universally abandoned. Proprietary systems fail because no one outside a small team can verify their claims.

GrapheneOS embraces the opposite approach. Every line of code is published. The build process is reproducible, meaning anyone can compile the source and verify it produces bit-for-bit identical binaries to what the project distributes. You need not trust the developers' claims. You can verify them yourself, or rely on the many security researchers who have done so. This is not a theoretical distinction. When Synacktiv's security team published their analysis of GrapheneOS's hardened memory allocator, they could examine the actual implementation rather than trusting marketing materials.

The project ships with no Google Play Services installed. This is not an oversight but a deliberate default. Most privacy-focused Android distributions either exclude Google entirely or include it with system privileges. GrapheneOS takes a third path: if you choose to install Google Play Services, it runs in a sandbox with zero special privileges, treated as the untrusted software it objectively is. You control every permission. Google cannot access your contacts, location, or files unless you explicitly grant it. Competing projects like CalyxOS use signature spoofing to run a reimplementation of Google services with system-level access. GrapheneOS makes the honest architectural choice: if you want Google apps, run them in a cage where they cannot access anything you don't explicitly grant.

For users who need tap-to-pay functionality, the Curve app works with GrapheneOS but requires sandboxed Google Play Services installed. Curve aggregates your existing cards into a single virtual card, and its tap-to-pay implementation functions normally even within the sandbox constraints.

The Technical Foundation

Understanding why GrapheneOS works requires understanding how modern exploits work. The vast majority of serious vulnerabilities involve memory corruption, situations where software writes data outside its intended boundaries, overwriting critical structures an attacker can leverage for control.

GrapheneOS replaces Android's standard memory allocator with hardened_malloc, a complete reimplementation designed to make exploitation practically impossible. Traditional allocators store metadata inline with user data, so an overflow that corrupts nearby memory can overwrite allocator structures and hijack program execution. Hardened_malloc stores all metadata in a completely separate region. The allocator divides memory into 49 distinct size classes, each with its own randomly-addressed memory region. No address space is ever reused between regions. Each allocation slot is protected by a random 64-bit canary with a leading zero byte, which blocks C string overflow attacks. When the program frees memory, the allocator overwrites the entire region with zeros before returning it to the pool, eliminating use-after-free information leaks.

On Pixel 8 and newer devices with ARMv8.5 hardware, GrapheneOS enables Memory Tagging Extension. MTE assigns a 4-bit tag to every 16-byte memory granule and stores a matching tag in the pointer. Any access where the tags mismatch triggers a hardware fault. This catches buffer overflows and use-after-free bugs at the moment they occur, not after an attacker has already leveraged them.

Stock Android uses a process called Zygote to launch applications. Zygote is a template process that forks to create new apps, which means every application inherits the same memory layout. An attacker who knows where one app's libraries load knows where they all load. GrapheneOS replaces this with exec-spawning, where each application gets a fresh process with completely randomized address space layout. This restores the full entropy of Address Space Layout Randomization that Zygote defeats. Cold app launches take roughly 100 milliseconds longer, a worthwhile trade for dramatically complicating exploitation.

The verified boot chain begins in hardware. Pixel devices contain a Titan M secure element with the firmware verification key burned into fuses at the factory. The firmware rollback index is similarly fused, preventing downgrade attacks where an attacker installs an older, vulnerable version. When you install GrapheneOS and lock the bootloader, your device's verified boot key is stored in the secure element. Every subsequent boot cryptographically verifies the entire chain from firmware through the operating system. Any modification, even a single flipped bit, halts the boot process. The Auditor app extends this to runtime, using hardware-backed attestation to verify OS integrity on a schedule you control.

The network permission toggle implements dual-layer enforcement. The standard Android permission system blocks network API calls, but GrapheneOS adds a second layer that blocks the actual network sockets, including localhost connections. This prevents a malicious app from communicating with another app that does have network access. When denied, the network stack returns errors indicating the network is down rather than permission denied, which prevents apps from detecting they are being restricted and improves compatibility.

Sensors permission covers accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, barometers, and thermometers. These sensors seem innocuous but enable sophisticated attacks. Accelerometer data can reconstruct what you type on a nearby keyboard through vibration analysis. Gyroscope readings can identify you personally through your unique gait pattern. Barometer data reveals what floor of a building you occupy. On GrapheneOS, apps without sensor permission receive zeroed data rather than errors, maintaining compatibility while eliminating the attack surface.

Storage Scopes transforms the storage permission from all-or-nothing into granular control. When you grant storage access to an app with Storage Scopes enabled, the app believes it has full access while actually operating in a sandbox. It can only see files it created itself. You can selectively expose specific files or directories through the standard file picker, giving an app access to exactly what it needs and nothing more. Contact Scopes applies the same principle to your address book, presenting an empty contact list by default with selective exposure of specific contacts or groups.

Installation and Configuration

GrapheneOS runs exclusively on Google Pixel devices because no other manufacturer meets its hardware requirements. The Titan M secure element provides hardware-backed attestation and encryption key storage. Proper verified boot implementation allows flashing custom signing keys and re-locking the bootloader with full security intact. Samsung, despite taking security seriously, deliberately cripples devices when the bootloader is unlocked. Most other manufacturers lack the necessary hardware entirely. The Pixel 8a offers excellent value as a budget option with full GrapheneOS support, while the Pixel 10 Pro serves users who need high performance.

The web installer at grapheneos.org/install/web handles installation through your browser. Update your Pixel's stock OS first for current firmware, enable OEM unlocking in developer options, and use the original USB cable. The installer unlocks the bootloader, flashes GrapheneOS, and locks the bootloader again. Both unlocking and locking wipe user data, so do not restore anything until the bootloader is locked. Verify the boot key hash displayed during first startup against published values before proceeding.

GrapheneOS ships with excellent defaults that already far exceed stock Android security. What follows will harden the device further. Post-installation hardening begins in Settings, Security and privacy, Exploit protection. Set auto-reboot to four hours, which returns the device to a fully encrypted state with all keys purged from memory. Configure the USB port as charging-only, even when unlocked, a hardware-level protection that stock Android's software toggle cannot match. Enable WiFi and Bluetooth auto-disable after thirty seconds of disconnection.

For maximum privacy, keep the device in airplane mode most of the time. Your cellular radio broadcasts a unique identifier to every tower in range, creating a continuous location log with your carrier and anyone they share data with. Airplane mode eliminates this entirely. When you need connectivity, enable WiFi only, ideally through a VPN. For situations requiring cellular data, consider a Silent.link eSIM, which can be purchased with Bitcoin and requires no identity verification. Some users maintain a second dedicated device with a Silent.link eSIM for online activity, keeping their primary phone in airplane mode as a secure offline vault for passwords, authenticators, and signing keys.

For applications, disable native code debugging, WebView JIT, and dynamic code loading for third-party apps by default. These settings eliminate major attack surfaces. If a specific app breaks, you can enable exceptions individually.

Install a VPN and configure always-on mode with connection blocking when disconnected. Mullvad requires no email for signup and accepts Bitcoin. IVPN likewise takes Bitcoin and offers port forwarding for self-hosting. ProtonVPN offers a free tier. Orbot routes traffic through Tor for stronger anonymity at the cost of speed.

For applications, Zapstore pulls updates from a decentralized app store built on Nostr, where developers cryptographically sign their releases and users verify authenticity without trusting a central authority. KeePassDX stores passwords locally with no network permission, making exfiltration impossible by design. Organic Maps provides offline navigation without data collection. Aegis manages two-factor authentication codes with encrypted local storage. Molly hardens Signal with database encryption at rest and automatic lock timeouts. For Nostr users, Amber stores your private key securely and signs events without exposing the key to other applications, while Amethyst provides a full-featured client.

For Bitcoin, Nunchuk provides a proper onchain wallet with multisig support and no KYC requirements. Phoenix offers self-custodial Lightning with automatic channel management, letting you send and receive instantly without trusting a third party. For smaller amounts where speed and privacy matter more than self-custody, Cashu.me provides an ecash wallet using Chaumian blinding, meaning the mint cannot link your deposits to your withdrawals. A reasonable setup uses Nunchuk for long-term savings, Phoenix for everyday Lightning payments, and Cashu for receiving zaps and casual transactions where the custodial trade-off is acceptable.

What You Gain

The common objection runs something like this: all of this seems like a lot of work for a problem that does not affect ordinary people. This objection misunderstands what is at stake. The question is not whether you have done something wrong that surveillance might catch. The question is whether you wish to live in a society where every movement, every communication, every relationship is logged, analyzed, and potentially used against you by parties whose interests do not align with yours.

The person who dismisses privacy concerns today may find themselves targeted tomorrow. Political winds shift. Definitions of acceptable behavior change. Data collected for advertising can be subpoenaed for prosecution. Information gathered by corporations can be purchased by governments, or by criminals, or by a vindictive ex-partner with modest resources and determination. The pregnancy center visits tracked by data brokers for advertising purposes become evidence when abortion laws change. The protest attendance logged by cell tower records becomes a list when political climates shift. The patterns of movement that reveal a relationship become leverage in a custody dispute.

GrapheneOS does not make you invisible. It does not protect against a determined nation-state adversary with unlimited resources. What it does is raise the cost of surveillance dramatically. It removes you from the bulk data collection that treats billions of people as raw material for behavioral prediction markets. It forces anyone who wants your data to target you specifically rather than simply purchasing it from a broker. It transforms your phone from a liability into a tool.

The installation process takes perhaps two hours, including reading documentation. The daily experience differs minimally from stock Android. The apps you need almost certainly work, either natively or through the sandboxed Play Services compatibility layer. The trade-off is not convenience for privacy. The trade-off is two hours of setup for meaningful ownership of your own device.

The technology exists. The documentation is thorough. The community is active and helpful. What remains is simply the decision to use it.

I’ve learned the hard way.. I got a Bitcoin loan to buy more bitcoin in 2020 because S2FX model said Bitcoin was going to $100k by the end of the month.

It didn’t.. and I lost 80% of my entire stack trying to cover my loan LTV before it was margin called anyway.
